Video: Installing CyanogenMod V5.0.4.2 for Droid

We’ve been covering various custom ROM’s over the last few weeks and stumbled onto another one last night which left us so impressed that a video tutorial on how to install it was needed immediately.  For those of you not familiar with Cyanogen, go ahead a do a quick Google search and you’ll realize that he’s kind of a big deal in the mod/ROM world.   However, there wasn’t a version of his ROM available to the Motorola Droid, until now.  Custom ROM guru Koush took on a current Cyangen build and blasted it over for our using pleasure and trust me when I say that this thing is crazy cool.

Video of CyanogenMod v5.0.4.2 in action…

Installation…

*Warning* – As always, you are performing these tasks at your own risk.  We are not recommending that you do ANY of these, but simply providing information to you.  There is a chance you could brick your phone, do other permanent damage and this will more than likely void your warranty. Please do as much research as you can beforehand.  We are not liable for any of your actions.

1.  Root your phone.
2.  Install ROM Manager from the market:  Download Link
3.  Download the newest Cyanogen:  Download Link
4.  Place Cyanogen file in the root of your SDcard.  (DO NOT UNZIP.)
5.  Open ROM Manager and “Flash ClockworkMod Recovery”.
6.  In ROM Manager go to “Install ROM from SD Card”.
7.  Select option for “wipe data”.  (See Note 1)
8.  Let it go to work and you are finished.

*Note 1* – There is an option to also perform a backup after selecting “Install ROM from SD Card.”  A ton of people are having issues if they select this option.  If you want to perform a backup, I would do so with the option at the bottom of ClockworkMod which says “Backup Current ROM”.  After that backup has completed, then go back and install the ROM.

*Note 2*Instructions for uninstalling and returning back to stock 2.0.1.

For the newest release and support check out the dedicated Cyanogen Droid thread.

  • ViggS

Looks like the ROM Manager site is down again.

    • ViggS

Never mind finally came up in the Market

  • gwilson93

if you are having problems receiving picture messages or videos, reactivate your phone by dialing *228 and then hitting 2 instead of 1 this should fix the problem, it worked for me!

  • jakheb

did anyone else have problems with the usb tether that came with it? i cant get it to work on the computer

  • http://twitter.com/TonyG916 Tony Garza

anyone having issues with the 3d app drawer? The wording apears to be right aligned and not directly underneath the icon…if so, how did you fix it?

    • kellex

Refresh the launcher. Hit your menu button, go to configure, scroll down to the bottom and reffresh it. Fixed it for me twice now.

      • http://twitter.com/TonyG916 Tony Garza

thanks…about the only flaw I see right now.

    • pdroidmaster

      im having the exact problem

  • gonzo319

This question goes for anyboby that can answer it. How can I get the clock widget that's on the screen shots on Cyanogen? thanks

    • izzy182

If I'm not mistaken, that's the “Beautiful Widget” on the market, it's only $0.99, worth the money.

      • gonzo319

        thanks Izzy

      • gonzo319

        One thing what's. It called

        • izzy182

          Beautiful Widget

  • gonzo319

just wanted to ask, what cool apps could I download or wanted an opinion of what great apps are out there. I'm currently running the Cyanogen ROM bad ass. and over-clocked at 800mhz

  • carpediem041

After tying to install Cyanogen my phone just keeps rebooting it shows the droid logo then the eye and keeps doing that over and over again. Any thoughts?

    • izzy182

did you happen to get an error message as you were attempting to swipe/back up? if that's the case, boot into recovery, manually Back Up first, then Swipe Data, then INSTALL the CyanogenMod.zip file. that's the same exact problem I had, let me know how it work out for you

  • Alan

Im running Droidmod1.0 with 2.0.1, can cyanogenmod 5.0.4.2 be put on 2.0.1 or do i need to get one of the leaked 2.1 on it first?

    • izzy182

Cyanogen IS the 2.1 for your phone, and all you have to do is to follow the steps in this article and you should be fine.

  • jnasty

My droid stays at the booting logo after try to in install cyanogen

  • jnasty

my droid stays at the booting logo… need help i think messed it up

  • nate7761

I know this has probably already been asked before but…how does this compare with ultimatedroid. I am running ultimatedroid 7.5 and it's pretty stinking nice. Just wondering if this build is as fast?

    Thanks

    • nate7761

Well I went ahead and made the switch. Speed seems to be about the same as far as I can tell. This build has a few more options as mentioned above. I like a few of the customization options on here like the ability to pick colors on the nexus wallpaper and the 180 degree rotation. Don't see a need to switch back to ultimatedroid right now but might in the future just because I enjoy switching things up and trying new things.

  • Brandon

I downloaded the file but the extension is (.jar), its looks like a zip file but does it make a difference? And can I change it to a (.zip)

    • izzy182

I wouldn't, just to be safe, might be missing files. simply (if you didn't initially) click on the link, then SAVE it on your desktop. Afterwards, click and drag the *.zip file into the root of your sdcard, and proceed

  • http://twitter.com/TonyG916 Tony Garza

going from droidmod1.0 to cyanogenmod, when you wipe/cache does it remove the nandroid backup installed from droidmod1.0? I downloaded the cyanogenmod without backing up…so I'm wondering if I'm ok.

    • http://twitter.com/jbernard703 Jeffrey Bernard

No, your nandroid backup will still be in /sdcard/nandroid folder. Well, it will be if you made a backup at some point.

      • http://twitter.com/TonyG916 Tony Garza

cool…should be backed up. I've run nandroid restore a few times in the past after some scary boot loops.

  • jasenm

    Hey Folks,
Some more food for thought on this. My .02 is that this IS the best rom out and Kellex is DA MAN. However, I also got the “stuck on moto logo” but I didn't come here and gripe about it. I simply did some more reading and because I skipped one small step, the fault was on me. Once I figured out what I had done wrong, slapped myself, and restored my backup, I started over and the process went flawlessly.

On a side note, last night I started from scratch on a friends Droid…and the best part… I did it ALL OTA and in less then an hour. Obviously the process is much faster then that on a PC/MAC but we weren't around a PC at the time and had very good 3G coverage so I said, “Why the hell not?” Again, it went perfect and my friend is very happy :)

Kellex… seriously man thanks for all the hard work you put into this site.

  • Koush

Hi, this is Koush. It is based on ESE53. I need the build fingerprint to show ERE25 so that the Market allows DRM apps.

    • izzy182

Koush, you're totally awesome man, love the custom ROMs, this CyanogenMod is a bit laggy, but hey, I couldn't do it, so many thanks! BTW, are you THE Koushik Dutta on the Market also?

    • kellex

Oh thats awesome to hear. Thanks for letting us know.

      • izzy182

Hey K, 'preciate the official 2.1 scoooooop, now I guess most of those people that are a bit afraid to modify their phone can sleep better at night cuz of you…LOL….it's good to know people doesn't it? ;)

  • Ben

Does anyone notice that your haptic feedback is a little more powerful after installing this? It works flawlessly for me, but it seems the feedback is more pronounced. Anyway to adjust the feedback besides on/off?

  • jason w.s.

Hey kellex, i bet you was sayin it in your sleep..”Dont unzip, dont unzip, just drop it in the folder!!”…lol

  • crowell392

i got the rom to work but i have a couple issues ,first i lost all my contacts and apps now i cant reinstall some of my contacts in the contact list and the snooze dont work properly ,does anyone have a fix for this

  • NewDroidOrder

Great ROM, I'm loving it. I've pretty much had it for about 5 hours now and I am loving it. Coming from the Ultimate Droid 6.0 ESE53 Base and I could not be more please with This new ROM. So far I have not had a single problem with it.

For those of you that are planning on jumping to this ROM, a good thing to do is get ROOT access and get a free app called Titanium Backup, this will save you a lot of time when you are getting you phone back to the way you had it before switching to this ROM. You can run this backup and then run it in batch mode and it will pretty much re install all of your apps you had all for you. Saves you a lot of time.

  • markinter

Followed your instructions and everything went perfectly. Thanks a ton! Now I just need to overclock her a tad.

    • http://twitter.com/jbernard703 Jeffrey Bernard

it is already overclock-able. just download setCPU and turn up the max.

  • RealGame22

Went ahead and did the ROM…..WoW!!! It is really good, might not go back to DroidMod yet. Thumbs Up

    • Nathan

question?? how do you find the rom on your sd card when I go to install it It doesnt show up??? If you know let me in on the secrete!

      • RealGame22

Mount your phone to the computer (don't unzip the file), and drag the file to the SD card. Put it at the end so it will not go into a folder. U might have put it into a folder check and see if you did that.

  • Nathan

So i downloaded everything correctly waited for like 2 hours for the new rom to download, went to flash that worked perfect, then I go to grab the rom off sd and apply it and it aint there??? anyone else have this problem, please help??

    • tpags

I have a question. I was looking at petes bugless beast and it says that future ota updates are disabled. Does that mean that if i install I will not receive the ota update even if i go back to stock?

      • Dan Johnson

If you go back to 2.0.1 non-root, you can get OTA, Its just disabled while using the ROM.

    • EndiSky

It sounds like you downloaded it from your phone, which means the file would be in your downloads folder, it needs to be in the root of the card

  • melvindelvillar

thanks izzi182 for your sugestion and your respond.

    • MyCoffeePlease

232 comments? This should attest the need for a forum.

  • Brendan

Does anybody know if the neural network LWP will work with this ROM if so can you give me the link so i can download it.

  • Kevin

I did everything said in the video and it installed the rom but when it went to reboot my phone keeps going to the motorola logo and then a black screen please help me

    • izzy182

I had similar problem at first when I installed the ROM, I kept passing M sign, then “Droid” and got to the Red Eye and it would reboot itself. What I would suggest (since the same thing happened to me, some just pull battery, in this case didn't work for me) if you initially flashed the Clockwork Mod, then reboot to recovery, once you reboot into recovery, then it should say Clockwork Recovery, then you can manually swipe user data and cashe, but I would suggest a back up first before you swipe anything. When you're done with backing up all your data (maksure use Advance Backup and check all boxes), swip user data, then “Install From SD”, NOT BOOT, and it should take care of itself

      • Kevin

what do i install from sd?

        • Kevin

i tried installing the rom and it says copying files twice then it freezes and says deleting files and then install complete and then im back to the recovery menu

          • izzy182

when you're in recovery menu does it say Clockworks Recovery?

        • izzy182

install the CyanogenMod that u previously put in your sdcard

          • Kevin

I have done that and it will act like it is downloading it says copying files twice then it says deleting files and then it does some other stuff and says install complete and im at the same menu on clockworks recovery

  • melvindelvillar

Hey i purchase the setcpu app my question is what setting should the cpu governor be at i have the mhz at 800 and minimum at 250mhz,so what about the cpu governor it gives me three options.please advise i apreciate your response thanks.

    • izzy182

I left mine on “On Demand”…also, you can set up other profiles to ensure your phone work properly in different states.

  • Nathan

@IZZY182 and The boss Kellex you guys are the shiz nittttt!!! Thanks I'll let you know how my Rooting goes…I feel like I'm losing my virginity lol jk

  • gmasters018

lost all of my contacts please help..i did do a backup but i don t know how to find it

    • izzy182

did you try to go to your contacts, click on menu button and “Import from SD?”

    • kellex

Your contacts are tied to your Google account. Once you login to your account on your phone which was step one, they should all automatically come back. Give it a minute to sync.

    • Endi

menu, settings, accounts and sync, add your gmail account and MAKE SURE that you select sync contacts

      • gmasters018

thanks everyone sorry i freaked out now one more question does anyone know how to get my apps back if thats possible?

        • izzy182

this is my response to Nathan below:

“there is a way to back up your apps using Astro File Manager (in the market), however, if you're just rooting your phone, it does not require a data swipe. On the other hand, if you have decided to go ahead and install the ROM, then no need to worry, once you log back into your google account, just search for your paid apps, and it'll label “Purchased”, and all you have to do is to download again.”

However, if you have already swiped data, you can simply just go and re-download them, won't have to pay again for your Paid Apps.

        • Brendan

if you purchased them go into downloads at the android market if they were free you will have to find them and download them all over again

  • Nathan

I have a question…If I decided to root my droid tonight how do I save my paid apps from being wiped out?? I have been reading for several months on this root word and i'm ready to make the move lol but I need to make a back up but How??

    • kellex

All of your paid apps are attached to your gmail account. They will be available to download again at no charge in the market.

    • izzy182

there is a way to back up your apps using Astro File Manager (in the market), however, if you're just rooting your phone, it does not require a data swipe. On the other hand, if you have decided to go ahead and install the ROM, then no need to worry, once you log back into your google account, just search for your paid apps, and it'll label “Purchased”, and all you have to do is to download again.

    • Brendan

if you root your phone using droidmod updater and then install droidmod 1.0 it will give you a nandroid backup so then install cyanogen ROM None of your paid apps will be wiped out in any of these processes

  • tj

if you watch the video and do exactly as the video says it should work

    • allansm

Followed the video exactly with the exception of selecting both wipe data and cache and make a back up from rom manager

  • tj

did you mount your sd card

    • allansm

Yes, checked it on Astro file manager and the file is in the root section of the sd card.

  • allansm

It's Not Working for me. I rooted the phone. Downloaded the cyanogen file from this website. Dropped it into the SD card, it's in the root. Downloaded Rom Manager. I got to the part where you select the cyanogen in the Rom Manager, selected back up existing ROM and Wipe Data and Cache…. and …..nothing happened.

I've turned off the phone. Pulled the battery. Deleted the file, downloaded it again and re-did the process by simply selecting wipe cache and data and nothing happens.

    =(

    • http://twitter.com/jbernard703 Jeffrey Bernard

you may want to try the manual option which is rebooting into recovery. you can do it by using the second option in rom manager or the ole' hold x and power. once in clockwork recovery wipe data and cache and then just select install from sd card and navigate till you find the Koush ROM. it seems some people are having issues with rom manager doing all the work.

      • allansm

The options include wide data/factory reset and wipe cache partition….which do i choose?

        • izzy182

What I would suggest (since the same thing happened to me, some just pull battery, in this case didn't work for me) if you were able to flash the Clockwork Mod, then once you reboot into recovery, then it should say Clockwork Recovery, then you can manually swipe user data and cashe, but I would suggest a back up first before you swipe anything. When you're done with backing up all your data (maksure use Advance Backup and check all boxes), swip user data, then “Install From SD”, NOT BOOT, and it should take care of itself.

          • allansm

i'd installed droidmod before. I'm now at stock. Do i still have to do a backup? I believe all the info is still on my sd card.

          • izzy182

After you downloaded ROM Manager, did you Flash ClockworkMod Recovery? (BTW, you're right, if you're at stock, you really don't have to do a back-up as you have once done it before) what I would suggest is open ROM Manager, Flash ClockworkMod Recovery and go from there. Also, if you have rooted your phone, go to your menu and see if you have SU – SuperUser, which has an icon of a Ninja.

          • allansm

Yep, wiped all cache manually, and data…. started from scratch… downloaded the file, the rom manager… flashed clockworkmod recovery….. and still the same thing. after i select cyanogen and choose wipe data and Cache nothing happens.

            I give up for now.

            Thanks for your help though!

          • allansm

when i reboot into recovery it says android system recovery on the top, not clockwork recovery.

    • allansm

I noticed Jae was having the same problem, but I don't know if he was ever able to resolve it.

  • tj

i have no clue what happened now??? i just have my wallpaper and nothing else? anyone have this?nevermind i dunno what i didi but i fixed it?

    • izzy182

what happened? If you're looking for Live Wallpaper, long press on home screen, then select Wallpaper…and Live Wallpaper will be there.

  • brandon

Thanks guys this is an AWESOME ROM i love my phone more and more everyday, because of you guys.

  • tj

this was about the easiest thing i have ever done b4 why is everyone having problems with it???

    • kellex

As weird as this may sound, not everyone's Droid is built the same way. Seems dumb, but its the truth.

  • Brendan

Kellex have you tried any of the ESE53 ROMS if so how do they compare to this ROM, do they run LWP smoother?

    • kellex

I haven't tried those because they aren't that different from the ERE25 ROMs. To me, they all look about the same with that smoked glass look and have the same apps. Plus, those guys whip out new versions every other day and they seem to all be incredibly buggy. Someone should mention to them that quality is better than quantity. :)

      • Brendan

Thank you yet again Kellex i am sure to stick with Cyanogen ROM until 2.1 update

    • http://twitter.com/jbernard703 Jeffrey Bernard

I have tried them. the Koush ROM is much smoother. ESE53 ROMs lag when changing homescreens with LWP. Also just running LWP on ESE53 slows down the scrolling of the app drawer, even overclocked to 1.25ghz. If your LWP is not smooth i would suggest if you haven't already to download setCPU from the market and crank your processor up a little bit.

      • Brendan

My LWPs are working great i was just wondering if the ones on the ESE53 roms were smoother i am currently at 1ghz

  • melvindelvillar

can anyone please try to update roaming capability on the droid via *228 and when the recording pronts you to choose an option do you see a phone keypad????? i dont to choose option #2 on it i rooted and install the rom everything else works fine please check and let me know if you have the same problem with yours i will appreciated it.

    • Kais

Like has been said in these comments multiple times, and on the forums of the ROM's creator, it's a known issue. Use the keyboard.

    • melvindelvillar

ok it worked with slide out key board thank you so much for your respond.

  • Jae

    Hello,

I'm stuck on the last step, after I select the Install ROM from SD Card and wipe data, it keeps going to the SPRecovery menu on reboot. I tried it maybe 6 times (using d-pad and touchscreen), but it always happens. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!

    • Kais

Have you copied the ROM to your SD card?

      • Jae

Yes… I copied it from my computer to the root directory of the SD card. I can select the ROM just like in the video after selecting “Install ROM from SD card”

        • Jae

I'm currently running DroidMod 164 (1.0), if that makes any difference…

        • Kais

when prompted after selecting the ROM, did you choose Backup in addition to Wipe Data? The Backup prompt has been giving people errors and might duplicate what you are seeing. If you didn't select Backup, then i would suggest heading over to the forum of the ROM creator (cyanogen) and browsing the threads there to see if you can determine the problem.

        • Kais

Hmm, did it flash to the Clockwork Recovery screen? Or do you still get SPRecovery when it tries to load the ROM? If it shows SPRecovery then you have missed an important step. SPRecovery won't load this particular image, you need to download and use “ROM Manager” from the marketplace. It will first flash over to Clockwork Recovery, which is specific to cyanogen ROMs. That will allow this to load.

          • kellex

Hey, just wanted to say that I greatly appreciate all the help!

    • kellex

      Try a battery pull.

  • Izzy82

BTW, Kellen, this is a totally awesome site, and trust me, I've already told all my Android friends about it. New to this stuff, but will contribute as much as possible

    • kellex

      Thanks! Greatly appreciate it!

  • izzy182

I understand that the 2.1 should have came with Battery-saver ability, however, as I upgraded to the CyanogenMod, it ate up my battery really quick. I've downloaded Task Cleaner 2.0 (BTW, if anyone's looking to save extra battery life, that would be an awesome free app to have, did I mention you can set up based on interval?) which I've set at auto-kill every 5mins. I did have my phone at 800mhz with live wallpaper on. After I switched to regular wallpaper it preserved battery a bit. I've also saw an *.apk file at alldroid (thanks to the geniuses blogging there) for battery extension, but not sure if it'll work on this Mod. I will do further research and report back. For the time being, to have my live wallpaper running, and wanting to save battery, do I just lower my phone to 550mhz?

    • Kais

Known issue related to the phone transmitter while the phone is in a sleep state.

  • melvindelvillar

hey the *228 update your roaming capability dont show a key pad to choose #2 to update roaming please check it out is weird.this is for the cyanogenmod v5.0.4.2 for droid i rooted my today everything else works fine.

    • Kais

      Use the keypad. Known issue.

  • imagineli

Can someone help? I just downloaded this ROM and it was my first time ever doing so, thanks for the video help Kellex made it real easy!, I have been having a problem with my droid with the screen going blank during calls and I cant wake it up at all I have to pull the battery before i downloaded the Rom and I hoped it would solve the problem but it didn’t, Verizon is no help as this is my second replacement phone in a week, each phone had a separate issue. I would like to try to fix the problem before I have them send me another phone and have to download everything all over again. any suggestions would be great

    • Izzy182

What I would recommend is to downgrade your phone back to 2.0.1 using the link above, reroot your phone, and try again, this way, you're using all professional help (more professional than us anyway ;) ) to avoid bricking your phone.

  • Rick

Man this mod is nice, works the best so far. Who needs the 2.1 update after using this mod!

  • ndhulst

ok i have a question, i know you need to put this zip into the root file on sd card, my problem is that my computer and droid wont talk to each other( believe me ive tried everything they just dont like each other i guess) ..lol so although i know its better to mount my phone, i cant. is there a way to move the file from downloads to root file from your phone in astro? i tried to select and move but it didnt work. any ideas? thanks :)

    • kellex

Yeah. Long pres on the file, go to Edit then Move. Then go to your root directory, hit options, Edit, Paste.

      • ndhulst

tried that it wouldnt let me paste it, but np i found another comp that let me mount my droid so were good, going to next step now :) thanks for quick reply!

  • shannoncline

Every time I run this rom I get an error while dumping boot image? Help!

    • kellex

When installing, uncheck the box to “Backup Existing ROM”. This option is giving some people issues.

  • rjoudrey

Is there a port (apk) of this Launcher2 home for 2.0.1 somewhere?

Please help. I went back to stock and I'm trying to reinstall the rom. In clockworkmod recovery it says “preparing to install rom, backing up boot, error while dumping boot image, clockworkmod recovery v1.6.9″ what do i do now?

try a fresh download of the rom ON A COMPUTER, then mount your phones sd card (use a card reader if you have to) and then DELETE the first cyanogen rom, then re copy the NEW download of the rom to the sd and start over.

I just installed it, it's pretty nice. I think I still like ultimate Droid better though, cynogen is too slow, it sometimes lags a bit when changing screens or apps, especially when going back to the home screen from the browser.

    Have an issue with installing Cyanogen 5.0.4.2, hope you can help;

Installed ROM Manager on my Droid, and flashed Clockwork Recovery, no problem.

When I tried to install Cyanogen, I got the following message:

    E:Can't symlink /system/xbin[
    E:Failure at line 50:
    symlink busybox SYSTEM:xbin/[
    Installation aborted.

Now I'm unable to load any ROM. I can get back to the Clockwork Recovery main screen, but that hasn't done me much good. I've tried to mount the sd card and restore, but so far that hasn't worked either. I just get stuck on the “M” logo on powerup. Any help/suggestions would be great, either to get Cyanomod running, or back to stock. Anything that will get me up and running will be good at this point.

      Just need some clarification…
you get stuck at the “M” logo only on normal booting
      and
you can access the recovery screen just fine when booting and holding “x”
      ——- am I correct?

        That is correct.

The rom manager does'nt dwonload from the link or the market?

    • kellex

You can't download in ROM manager. You have to download the ROM directly from the link I provided.

      • Dan Johnson

        Ok Thanks.

        • Dan Johnson

Wait, I did download from the link, the ROM manager that is used is not available from the link or the Market to install the ROM from my root.

Never mind, once I reinstalled droidMOD it let me download ROM manager. Awsome find, Works Great, No Lag at all on mine. Thanks!!!
