Could This Be Our First Look at the Samsung Galaxy S4?

evleaks gs4

A few minutes ago, the very reliable @evleaks took to his Twitter account to post two images of what could be our first look at the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4. This Twitter account is known for being fairly spot-on with his leaks and predictions of phones in the past, but the images of this Galaxy S4 look quite different from the earlier Galaxy phones Samsung released in the past.

First off, the square-edged design that this device is sporting looks a lot different from the S3 before it, something that we had assumed Samsung had wanted to keep. Even though we wish they did, it’s hard to believe that Samsung would get rid of their “iconic” home button and move towards on-screen buttons instead, which this image suggests.

evleaks gs4-1

The rectangular design does match up with the reported S4 cases that we saw the other week. The specs listed in one of the images also somewhat match up with what has been rumored so far, but there isn’t even so much as a Samsung logo to be found on either of the two pictures. We have heard rumors either way on whether or not the device will sport a FHD Super AMOLED or not. This leak suggests that it will.

Evleaks is usually pretty spot on with what he finds however, so this could be close to what we will end up seeing on March 14 at the Unpacked event. Then again, this could be far from what we will actually see, and at this point, we just don’t know.

What do you think? Is Samsung going to finally do away with their home button? Or is this a placeholder render to throw us all off until the unveiling?

  • NexusMan

    I hope there’s no buttons!

  • Shannon Zabroski

I like the home button. And I don’t apologize for that. When u want to hit the home button u don’t have to look …just like the power button and volume rocker. I like the other controls as soft buttons tho. Listen…I hate iPhones…but along with iPads…their home button gives the same functionality on my note2.
    Ok…let the hate begin…3…2…1…

    • jeans13

      agree

    • bananatroll

      Samsung called…

They want they’re noodle vendor back

  • http://www.kovdev.com/ kover

The fact that you are also passing along this obvious Photoshop is just… /speechless

  • Tim

I dont know if anyone noticed this, but in the new honda civic commercial there is a phone with a projection keyboard that looks quite similar to the render of the S4 above and seems to have an edge to edge display. I also remember there being a video a couple months ago showing off a laser keyboard with the S4, it would be pretty funny if that ended up being the actual phone.

  • Rodeojones000

I hope the info regarding the lack of a physical home button is true.

  • RTR2011

Good grief, I hope not. All we need is another oversized phone with no physical buttons on front. Give me my one damn button, ok!

    • Rodeojones000

A physical button? You’re trolling us, right?

    • bananatroll

Can’t let go of the past bro?

  • Marco Mendoza

Hopefully they go without the home button. It make the phone look cleaner

  • master94

FAKE, no Home screen button, 4:3 ratio, just doesn’t look like Samsung’s work

  • http://twitter.com/Footba11Joe Joey Malcomb

If the S4 has a 5″ touch screen as rumored, this is probably a fake. The S3 has a 4.8″ screen and the render here makes that look puny. No way that big of a screen jump is only 0.2″.

    • snowblind64

I was going to say the same thing. The render is Galaxy Note size. It doesn’t make sense to make the GSIV the same size as the note.

      • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

It is not Note size. assuming that the scale is the same for each device shown, it is roughly 1/8″ taller, and maybe that much wider (possibly a 16:10 screen rather than 16:9). It *seems* much larger because the screen takes up nearly the entire front of the device. When in actuality, the additional screen size (.2″) is just enough to cover on-screen keys, and the removal of most of the bezel towards the bottom of the device.

        • snowblind64

No. The screen on the render (approximately 5.75″ diagonal) is actually larger than the Note II’s screen (5.55″) and the overall device dimensions are pretty close (same width as a Note II but about .25″ shorter).

  • lye

    Nice looking tablet.

  • Rich Koos

This render doesn’t seem real enough stacked up next to the other galaxies. And why are the specs so vague? All this stuff we basically know, why wouldn’t it have 4.2, of course it has AMOLED display it’s samsung, the camera is the only real new spec. Samsung likes to buff their features so it doesn’t make any sense to me why they wouldn’t be specific new features. Also no screen size given? Personally I think this is fake.

  • Bill

    FAKE

  • jack

Samsung has come a long ways since the galaxy s one line, I just hope they reinvent touch wiz and make it look more natural and revolutionize their design of the phone they have the hardware part down already plus their nifty software features come in handy from time to time, well Samsung surprise me with the gs4 I want another galaxy phone and they better not make the note 3 six inches or more that’s too big for me and most people I know.

  • Tim242

If it is metal as suggested by their invitation and teaser, I will drop my Note II for it. If the home button is really gone, I will throw my Note II.

  • jeans13

if this is it (which i doubt) i super glad their going with on screen buttons, but disappointed in the square design :/

  • http://www.elliottblufer.com Elliott Blufer

I don’t know what everyone else is talking about. If this is it, it’s probably my next phone.

    • Smithers

      Amen brother

  • Thomas

    *puts Note 2 on ebay*

  • Joe

Umm, the HTC One and all the Sony phones have similarly shaped smaller radii at the edges. They all look much better than the S3.

  • Ben Modica

I really hope Samsung is ditching the physical home button. I have a hard time believing it though.

    • bananatroll

If an OEM wanted to get in better graces with google, they would do things like get rid of poser physical home buttons, and corny luney tunes themed UI skins full of gimmick features and over aggressive bloatware to the hills.

If Samsung does any one of these many would be shocked…

      Wait… *phones ring in background*

      Its for you bro:

      Samsung called…

They want they’re cool aid vendor back.

  • http://www.facebook.com/preeth.manu Preeth Manu

if its squared off, no thanks. The S3 is a really nice looker, this, not so much.

  • Joe

All I’ve been hearing about is “omg da physical home buttonz”. Now it appears to be gone and people are still bitching and moaning.

  • http://www.facebook.com/LoganQBerry Logan Berry

    That’s an iPhone

    • kidtronic

      How?

    • EvanTheGamer

      Blind as a bat.

  • Liderc

Sigh, they take the physical button off which I’m so happy about, but then they make the damn phone too big and wide lol. Can we just get Galaxy Nexus remakes with better screen/camera/hardware over and over? Seriously, best phone ever. But honestly, this is probably not it. They’ll want to keep a similar design to the S3 so people who grew to like the S3 will go for it.

    • Joe

This site in a nutshell: anything Nexus is the best.

      • junk

well…. it usually is in terms of software haha its always updated. the GS3 might never make it to 5.0 OFFICIALLY that is

      • Liderc

The Galaxy Nexus is an incredible phone, it’s not bias to say so. I never had a Nexus device before I bought it, but I assure you I’ll find a way to purchase another if I can (I’m on Verizon). The fact is having the most up to date software + no skin + I really liked the front of the Galaxy Nexus because it was so clean = a nice phone. Doesn’t matter what its name is, Nexus just happens to include everything that we’re looking for in a device.

      • Rodeojones000

Yes, Nexus is best. And it’s about time you came to grips with this.

  • EvanTheGamer

No physical home button means more sales! YAY for Samsung!

    • http://twitter.com/BKBayemi OMG, Borbor Carzola!

      Not really…

  • http://www.getintonursing.com/ Jon

There is a new Samsung video I saw on The Verge today…it’s an add with a little kid. In it, the executive holds an S4 about 15 seconds in. It looks large and squarish and metallic.

    • gokusimpson

      I think that was a Note 2

      • Rodeojones000

Why would they have a Note 2 in the S4 commercial? I saw it too and this render matches up with what little we could see in that commercial.

        • gokusimpson

          Lol wtf…sarcasm?

What would be the point of keeping the S4 under wraps this whole time and make a big deal about hiding it in that box if they were going to just have that fool use it in the commercial.

  • EvanTheGamer

And there goes the neighborhood! You know why? ‘Cause everyone will be jealous of my shiny new SGS4! Can’t wait!

  • Steven Sill

Looks too fat. I would prefer something closer to the DNA or Xperia Z width.

  • tyguy829

If this is real, then we’ve all been samsunged!

  • http://twitter.com/ThePhillipBee Phillip Bee

Seems a little too boxy for Sammy’s new design direction. Also, the bezel at the bottom is too slim. As mentioned in the article there is no room and lack of a physical home button (which is useless anyway and be be replaced by on screen button and or gestures)

  • b00sted

Holy Mother of god.. this could be my next phone

    • Jonathan Bunch

      I like it!

    • kidtronic

      Because of this crude render?

      • b00sted

it is a galaxy with hopefully soft buttons so yes, yes because of a crude render.

        • Elliot Kotis

          onscreen*

          • b00sted

            Thanks, haha

  • akazerotime

We’ve all been Samsung’ed. The home button is on the back.. right next to the 2.5×2.5 VZW 4GLTE logo..

  • U Mad Bro? No Bu Your Mom Is

Looks fair enough. You know, for a non-Nexus.

  • http://www.facebook.com/CalebShwarez Caleb Loop

Jesus this looks terrible. This cant be legit. Even the render looks terrible.

    • NemaCystX

Samsung was VERY good at keeping the S3 under wraps last year before its unveiling, this could be “dummy” graphics meant to fool the leakster into thinking there the final design.

      • Tim242

The real S III pics came out a few weeks before. I remember everybody’s outcry over the button layout.

        • http://www.facebook.com/CalebShwarez Caleb Loop

Yeah I remember that, pictures of it surfaced inside of that dummy case that made it look like an S2.

    • Inquizitor

It’s still not as ugly as the S III.

      • billy routh

Yep the s3 was so ugly it outsold every other android device out there.

        • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

Because the device’s looks are the only thing that people bought it for. None of them thought “I don’t really love how it looks, but I like it for other reasons so I’ll buy it anyway”. Generalizations show more about the commentator than the subject matter.

        • Elliot Kotis

          *every phone.

        • Inquizitor

That has nothing to do with it. I think the iPhone 5 is also pretty hideous, didn’t stop it from being a big success. And I’m sure the HTC One will sell somewhat well besides being incredibly ugly in both software and hardware.

  • SpikedRed

God, I hope so. That home button just makes me think I’m going to:
Break it while it’s in my pocket.
Accidentally hit it while it’s in my pocket, making me do something, like pocket dial or drain the battery.
Get lint/dust/whatever in between the button causing a shorter shelf life of the device overall.

  • tyguy829

That’s like Note size! Way too big, especially if it’s square. I thought the S3 was the limit in terms of size…

    • CapnShiner

Look more carefully at the picture. It’s not that much bigger than the GS3. The screen is much bigger, thanks to the lack of home button and smaller bottom bezel, so it gives the illusion that the whole device is bigger. Look at the GS3 compared to the GS2 compared to the GS4.

      • r0lct

I agree. You can’t do edge to edge all the away around without squaring off the body.

  • trwb

    Screens are getting too big

  • http://www.twitter.com/nblufire12 Nathan Patel

Looks really ugly and wide but I do like the removal of the physical home button.

  • kevin

Oh god plz let this not be the final product…

  • provocal

Does this mean Verizon will have to print their branding directly upon the screen?

    • moccor

      rofl, genius ^

    • galaxynex5656

No, there is no room. A better solution has been found though! By starting a new contract with the Galaxy S4, Verizon will pay for a large tattoo on your hands, arms, and back free of charge! Not complying with this large (Verizon 4G LTE) tattoo may lead to numerous fines, lawsuits through breaking your contract, and butthurt, lots of it. So buy your Galaxy S4 today so you can be “Verizon’s NEW Little Bitch”! Oh and we now own your soul too; what else did you think Share Everything meant?

      • iamme

the s3 doesnt have the branding on the front so there is a good chance this will not either

        • CapnShiner

The GS3 was released before that trend started.

          • zurginator

At the same time the SIV is such a massive seller that Samsung can say “No branding or no phone”, and Verizon would probably (reluctantly) agree.

        • briahlynka25et

I got a great new Lotus Elan after making $7900 this – five weeks past
and just a little over 10k this past munth. this is certainly the most
rewarding Ive ever done. I started this nine months/ago and straight
away began to bring in at least $72 per/hr. I use this website,, &shyAs&shyk25&shy.&shycom

    • EvanTheGamer

No, Verizon will NOT do that. Damn idiotic comments.

      • http://www.gizmoninja.com/ Tabe

You have quite the sense of humor.

        • EvanTheGamer

          Yes sir.

          lol

wow, you can’t honestly be that stupid heh

I think he was trying to convey how not humorous that comment was. Probably written by a 15 year old that only knows that his parents don’t like Big Red and can’t have an original thought if he tried.

    • George264

They will definitely etch it right on the screen.
The Verizon GSIV, the one Galaxy with our special Verizon Laser Etched™logo on your screen.
      Verizon branding, just be dicks.

    • Jon Lambert

on screen verizon logo where the buttons should be.

“The Samsung Galaxy S IV on Verizon Wireless offers an intuitive and innovative user experience not seen on other carriers’ variants. Swipe up from the new ‘V’ button to access the home, menu, and back keys, or tap the ‘V’ button to open the My Verizon app from anywhere on the phone.”

      • digitalicecream

This will be removed by a ROM asap.

    • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

Maybe… instead there will just be a projector that displays the Verizon logo above the screen. Always. Constantly draining your battery and blinding you when you wake up in the middle of the night.

  • Tommy Thompson

The screen is only going to be .19 of a inch bigger, but the render makes it look about a half of an inch bigger…

  • microdot

I don’t believe that render since there will most def be a physical home button and i thought they are moving away from the amoled screens

  • http://www.facebook.com/rene.barba.89 Rene Barba

Looks like something someone put together in photoshop.

    • burkett375

      Really bad, at that…

  • PhillipCun

Looks fake. Look at the first image bottom right. The photochop looks horrible. Looks like they did it in 2 seconds.

  • Robert MacDonald

Come on Samsung were is the edge to edge screen with speakers in the front.

    PLEASE NO!!!!

  • NorCalGuy

    Yup I will take one

  • http://twitter.com/TheNintendo64 Drew

I was going to wait for the X phone, but seeing as that probably won’t happen this year, the GS4 will most likely be my next phone. My upgrade is in October though, so Motorola still has time to change my mind. I’m not crazy about them now after the Droid Razr (my current phone)

    • http://www.techmantis.net/ Minja Miketa

I predict they release it at IO.

  • chris125

With going away from a home button I would have hoped it to be smaller overall especially with such a small screen increase. I hope they do away with home button but don’t think they will

  • frank

Wow… It looks horrible. HTC One I guess will be my new phone :l

    • chris125

That’s what everyone said about the s3 too and look how well it sold.
