To the Handful of DROID XYBOARD Owners, Your New Tablet has been Rooted

If you own a DROID XYBOARD – that would be the locked down, non-quad-core Honeycomb tablet with Blur splashed over top of it – you will soon be able to root thanks to @djrbliss. I’m assuming the root method is similar to what he released for the rest of Motorola’s products last week, but the actual 1-click file won’t be available until tomorrow. You can find the root method at MDW.

I’m curious, did anyone buy a XYBOARD?

Xyboard in hand…decision made because A) its Motorola and IMO Motorola consistently has the most stable and functional android builds as well as top notch hardware B) iR C) 8.2″ size literally fits in my back pocket and much easier to hold for hours while reading a book D) ICS coming soon E) Tried galaxy 10.1 and 8.9 (almost kept 8.9 because of size) but it was CLUNKY as all hell, wasn’t smooth or fast in UI. Also tried THREE tf primes, aside from size they were PERFECT with one fatal flaw, WIFI sucked balls even after ics update F) motocast G) universal remote control app works very well.

My only complaints are no microsd, no ics now, no quad core and honeycomb app market only…other than those items its quite perfect for what I need…and of those problems microsd isn’t a big deal, i ve had a 64gb first Gen I pad since it first came out and never broke 25gbs of storage on it so highly doubt I will on this, ics will be on this in a few months and unless I’m gaming on this (which I won’t) I would never notice the difference between a quad core and the dual core it has…as for honeycomb app market only most of the apps I use are on there and with ics I think that issue dissapears?

From what I can see, xyboard are great tablets. To see them finally rooted is great, too. Now I’m waiting on a report of successful SIM unlocking and use with foreign SIM, then I will buy one immediately.

Its really not that bad of a tablet smooth and fast alittle pricey but what isnt anymore

  • Threadmonster

I love my xyboard so far. 8.2 is the perfect size (giggity), display is nice, HDMI out, IR blaster, and promised ICS. Yeah the 400 was steep, but all of these new tablets are going to be missing some of the things i like so, pffft.

  • sonofacheron

The fact is, notwithstanding the high price, the Xyboard has quite a few things going over it:

It has a very very good screen, on par with the Ipad2.
It is fast — and it performs very well in most benchmarks.
Its a better tablet than the Samsung Tab 10.1 which COSTS the same on Verizon

Also the Xyboard, once again, demonstrates Moto’s superior robust build quality — note how a major British retailer pulled the Transformer Prime off its shelves as a result of countless problems with quality control.

For an objective and non hysterical comparison between the Xyboard and the Samsung Tab 10.1 (& Prime for that matter) check out MobileTechReview’s comparo. This is a dispassionate even handed side buy side comparison by a rational adult without an agenda or an axe to grind.

The negativity on display here reminds me of the judgements made by insecure high school losers parroting what they they thought they overheard the cool kids saying.

Well i have a XYBOARD 10.1 and I so regret buying it! It hangs on me all the time and very unreliable. It was overpriced and you can’t find any good cases for it. Otterbox is a no, trident is a no, Griffen is a no. Motorola is synonimous with low quality based on the performance I have experienced with this tablet. My regret is that I purchased it instead of the Samsung or the IPad for a similar cost. Like my dad says: “Son sometimes you gotta know when to lick your wounds.” If you in the market for a tablet, run from the xyboard fast! Pick anything not Motorola.

  • Pete

Is the bootloader on the wifi version of the XYBOARD locked down too? If it is I have a hard time seeing how bootloader lockdowns can be ALL Verizon’s fault… seems like Moto could have gone the developer friendly route with the wifi version at least.

    Fantastic title Kellex  :)

still loving my Xoom. With ICS it feels brand new again :)

I could not justify the cost when the Prime was much less. Even with the bad press on the Prime I think I made the right choice.

How’s the screen on the Prime? I heard good things, but haven’t tried one out, yet.

      • Steve Gallegos

Not bad at all. I’m on it right now actually lol. The brightness this can achieve is pretty immense, good for outdoor users. I should note that quite a few people on XDA have screen bleeding (mine does too, but it’s only noticeable when booting up). Still, I think its a great device. Plus, the dock makes it that much more awesome lol.

Oh, and it was actually not done using the method you described. That was tried first but failed..

  • http://twitter.com/bignadad BigDX {bignadad}

Asurion sent me one for my broken xoom, so i had no choice. Xyboard is a nice upgrade from xoom.. the form factor and battery are the biggest perks i see.  Yes, its has a locked bootloader, but hopefully bootstrap will be next :)

  • Nhlpreds98

I wouldn’t buy one just on the NameFAIL.

  • Azndan4

You forgot to mention that it is overpriced.

Well thats fantastic! I better rush over to that site pronto!

  • Bateluer

I thought the Motorola XyBoards were vanilla HoneyComb

Were the Verizon Droid XyBoards Blur’d?

    • EC8CH

Xoom was stock, XyBoards are not

      • Bateluer

         Are you sure?

        http://www.androidcentral.com/motorola-droid-xyboard-review#software
        http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/15/motorola-xyboard-8-2-review/

The Motorola branded ones, the WiFi models, show up as nearly vanilla Honeycomb in reviews. I was actually looking at the Moto XyBoard 8.2 as the Tegra 2 powering the Tab 8.9 is weak.

        • EC8CH

From what I read they were skinned, but I haven’t been following them closely as they don’t interest me in the slightest.

          • ReturnofMctypething

            nu ip address bro?

Yeah, apparently if your not a Galaxy Nexus fanboy and/or express any sort of criticism to this site, you get banned. Who knew? The only acceptable comments are variations of Nexus praise.

          • EC8CH

Or maybe its because of your overuse of a lame internet meme and your constant dickish attitude?

          • Jdstell

Not true. What it comes down to is, the G-Nex is the latest, greatest Nexus device AND it’s on Verizon. It has a built-in cult following like an i-device. The developer community, as expected, jumped all over it. Therefore, most of the Android news is related to the G-Nex. The Anti-Nexus people are getting to be just as bad as the i-crowd.

Go to Moto’s website.  They have HC with their tablet blur on it.

          http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/US-EN/Consumer-Product-and-Services/Tablets/MOTOROLA-XYBOARD-10-1-with-WI-FI-US-EN#anchor

The Xoom (US) was stock HC/ICS.  The international Xoom’s have a blur HC running on them.  All the XYBoards have the same blur HC on it and will get the blur ICS when they are released.

          • Bateluer

The links I posted note that it seems to be icon skinning, very minor. Not the cluster fluck that is MotoBlur on phones.

I’m just interested in the Moto branded 8.2in model because I like the size and form factor. And the Samsung Tab 8.9, with Tegra 2 and TouchWiz is an underpowered device. With root, any bloatware apps can be frozen with Titanium and icons changed as needed, stop me if I’m wrong.

          • Anonymous

Yea my b, I didn’t look at your links.  Yes it is a very light skin that they use on the tablets.  However, the new blur on the phones are much better then what they used to be and if the leaks of ICS are correct, then that blur will be extremely light.  It is now just a waiting game…
