Good things come to those who wait. Remember accomplished developer Koush Dutta’s AirCast, the app that made unauthorized use of Google’s Cast protocol to stream local media from your devices to Chromecast? Later renamed AllCast, Dutta was forced to remove the functionality during the Chromecast SDK’s testing period. Now that Google has publicly released the development tools, though, Dutta has issued an update that re-enables local streaming.
Fair warning: the feature isn’t perfect. Depending on your wireless setup, you may experience lag while streaming video. Other users have reported weird quirks like upside-down playback. Knowing Dutta, a fix is probably forthcoming, but if you’re looking for the perfect local streaming solution, this isn’t it at the moment.
The app is available from Google Play, and requires the latest version of Google Play Services to work. The paid version is $4.99, if you want to stream videos longer than 1 minute in length.

So does anyone else get it to just show Allcast icon on the screen and no media actually sends over? On Nexus 5.
avia is much better than Allcast.
Are there plans to bake this into the CM family as a system service?
Where can we get the latest version of google play services 4.2
Would be very helpful for work/enterprise if this app (or any others) could cast a .pdf
Im I missing somthing, but this doesnt do much but point and send files in folders to the tv….. thats lame. What about an app that will send watchespn, maxgo, crackle or even the game im playing on my tablet to the tv thru chromecast?????
Are there any apps that allow you to stream to PS4 or PS3?
Avia. It allows me to stream pictures, videos, and music to my PS3, Chromecast, and Google TV.
I thought Avia was expensive or a subscription service. At $2.99 I’ll give it a shot.
Nope, not a subscription service, that’s the beauty of it. The compatibility and the price.
I use iMediashare–once the service is up and running on the phone I can pick it up on the PS3–photos, videos…
Still waiting for an app that can cast all file types. Does allcast?
I’ll try it when I get home and if it works I think I’ll purchase it as I know my wife wants to show pictures and videos of the kids on the TV.
You can already do this with Avia. It’s much cheaper and the app isn’t half baked like allcast. You can have videos, pictures, and music to your TV.
Avia already does this perfectly
Avia is an awful app.
Your opinion… I disagree. As do most others in this thread.
Thanks for the heads up. Avia streaming all my stuff perfectly! Allcast would just show Allcast icon and no media.
$4.99 is kinda steep, i know Koush is a great dev and has done a lot for the dev community, but yikes
It is steep for an app that’s half baked. I’d wait it out.
We’re all so conditioned for cheap software now. The price doesn’t bother as much as the need. With Plex I don’t envision using Allcast – but I like that it exists.
Nova Launcher is $4.99. is that steep?
No, but it works very well.
UN55D8000.. Have that same model.. Sick TV.
Yes it is. Especially when you get it for half the retail MSRP, with 4 free 3D glasses (even though we don’t really use them) and a free Blu-ray player.
so what’s the best way to stream videos from desktop to chromecast?
Depends on what type of videos but, most likely, the answer is Plex.
Prob plex on pc / avia on mobile device. Fwiw .. realplayer cloud app works surprisingly well too.
I prefer PlayOn, myself.
drag the mp4 video onto an empty google chrome browser tab, then cast that tab from your laptop to the chromecast.
I’m doing it right now with Avia. Wish I had known about this before. Within Avia, you can go to the Add Media and select networked computers.
Oh Look Google! I’m streaming my local music files…that you don’t allow me to stream….Then again I’m connected through the Xbox One… app isn’t finding my Chromecast
Do you have the latest version of Google Play Services installed? Version 4.2?
You need to update Google Play Services. I originally couldn’t find mine in the app but after I updated, things began to work
how did you update your google play services?
Ask Google exactly that question. That’s how I did it.
How to update Google play services, please.
The APK is available online.
Love streaming my blu rays.
Dutta.
So it doesn’t stream local video without quirks, how is it with audio? Are there Audio quirks? Also does it mirror?
Audio plays upside down… In all seriousness I played videos this morning just fine, I guess it depends on the device.
I Laughed.
me too
Avia can already do this without quirks for less.
Finally Koush can stop complaining about Google “intentionally” breaking support.
Koush turned into a greedy developer. He wasn’t always like this. Now he just copycats other apps. Knowing that Avia can do this for $2.99 without it being half baked and he’s still charging $4.99 for a broken app. And don’t get me started on his free version app. He has a limit on videos and it still has ads. Choose one or the other.
Agreed on that front. I was surprise when I saw one of his apps not being free. I can understand it takes work, but damn.
While i agree to some extent with the greed comment (why do i have to wait 5 seconds with his super user app to approve root permissions.. really) you cant blame the guy for wanting to get paid for his work. Honestly, pretty sure you can stream your media to at least an xbox from the default Samsung media viewers. I know you can send pics and video with that one. $4.99 is a bit steap for really the limited functoinality this app has. Now if i could mirror my screen, i would consider it. lol
I have a feeling that once mirroring is enabled, the price will go up.
When Koush is finished polishing this app, it’ll be millions of times better than Avia, especially with the much much easier user interface, then it’ll definitely be worth the $4.99
You may be right about that. Sounds like a good reason to postpone the purchase until the finished version can be evaluated.
They’re both a POS, Waiting for MX player to do it how it should have been done since day 1.
Heaven forbid a developer try to make a living charging for apps.
I have no problem him wanting to get paid for his work. However if he is going to charge $4.99 it should work properly first.
Charging that much for an app that does not work is just rotten.
What’s wrong? Don’t you usually buy a car that runs great but has four flat tires?
Koush is greedy. I have the premium license for ROM manager and when I went for the option to install the touch version of CWM he wanted an iap for a dollar more.
Got it, there is a few gltchy video playback issues, but a great step in the right direction.
Really? Down voted for the truth?
Streams from your local PC to chromecast?
Is there a way I can stream the movies stored on my PC (wired, but on same network as the chromecast) to the chromecast?
Here is my situation: I have a PC with all my videos, Music & Photos on it, wired to my router. I’ve been using the newer WDTV Live to stream wirelessly. With Avia, I can now view/cast movies from that same wired PC. (seems to only be able to do it thru a media device though, and not as a networked path….if you understand what I mean. I don’t have access to ALL my movies, just what Windows Media has picked up.) I’ve tried the Chrome Extention Google Cast (where you open a blank tab in Chrome, and drag a movie file onto it and then hit the Google Cast button. But it stutters for me alot. So I’m back to using my WDTV Live for streaming from my PC.) https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-cast/boadgeojelhgndaghljhdicfkmllpafd
