What happens when you combine the smarts of Amazon Alexa and the functionality of an Amazon Echo, then spin them around in a cube-shaped can that doubles as a Fire TV OS-powered set-top box? The Fire TV Cube, of course.

Spotted by AFTVnews, Amazon has posted a signup page for this upcoming device, but currently, all we really know is the Fire TV Cube name. Thanks to previous reports dating back to last year, it’s believed this Fire TV Cube will be a combination of an Echo smart speaker and Fire TV, Amazon’s current hardware offering for those invested in Amazon’s media ecosystem.

Here is a reported image of the Fire TV Cube, alongside the currently available Fire TV (Pendant) and Alexa Voice Remote.

What really separates this set-top box from others is the idea of being able to speak to it, not having to rely on an Alexa Voice Remote. Because the Fire TV Cube would have plenty of mics as well as a speaker, you’ll be able to use it as a typical Echo device, even if the TV is turned off.

Unfortunately, Amazon’s sign-up page doesn’t offer any details, except for a “Details coming soon” line. You can subscribe to updates for the Fire TV Cube by following this link.

This makes me want an Android TV-powered set-top box I can control with my voice and Google Assistant, no remote necessary.
