HTC One (M8): 25+ Tips and Tricks

Whenever a flagship device is released, we want to make sure that new owners of it know exactly how to use all of its major features without having to figure it all out on their own. From navigating around to changing wallpapers to fully utilizing camera software, our 25+ tips and tricks series is one of our favorites to put together.

The latest to receive the tips and tricks treatment is the brand new HTC One (M8). HTC’s 2014 flagship, which launched just last week, introduces new off-screen gestures, a brand new camera UI, tweaks to Sense with version 6.0, on-screen navigation buttons, better control over wallpapers and home screen setups, plus more. The device itself is an upgraded version of the One (M7), last year’s model, mostly in all the right places.

So, if you are ready, here is our tips and tricks video for HTC’s latest.

Thank you Kellen for a great tips and tricks video!!!! I’ve never had full lock screen widgets on a HTC phone before… ONLY 1 widget on the DNA. It’s been awhile since I needed to set it up on the Nexus 10.

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

Is anyone else infuriated by Verizon’s manipulation of every little thing they can get away with? This morning I learned I have an FM transmitter in my new HTC One, which I was super excited about since I haven’t listened to morning/talk radio since a new streaming-policy went into effect at work a couple of months ago (no more iHeartRadio). After searching through the phone, I couldn’t find this FM Radio app, so I went online and learned, of course, that Verizon disables this feature on the HTC One phones. On all other carriers this feature is alive and well, but oh no, not Verizon.

Verizon Customer Service: “With so many great data-guzzling radio-streaming apps out there, the consumer will be inclined to pay for a higher-tiered data plan. Genius!”
    (Result: One less 10-year customer…)

    • Intellectua1

Verizon always has the best interest of it’s customers in mind. You should be happy they’re looking out for you. Haaaaaaa!!!! Or maybe they are coming out with their own music streaming service that they prefer you use..

      • crmcsh01

Yep, Verizon also disabled FM radio in the One Max, it’s ridiculous, also I have found that the “power saving” feature in the One Max was also disabled… only on the Verizon variants of course.

        • MvP77

When I had the One on tmobile I was telling a coworker she should enable power saving mode on her Verizon One. Low and behold it was not in settings. Such a dumb thing to remove.

        • Geekout

I heard that it is coming soon, needs “carrier approval” first

        • Eric R.

Are there any in the Play Store for FM

          • michael arazan

Tune In Radio Free or Pro will let you listen to any radio station in the world, the pro version let’s you record. You can also rewind live media to go back to the beginning of a program or song in the buffer. It’s what I use to listen to live radio and comedy stations.

    • Verizon has always been run by the devil.

    • marla

I am using the HTC One M8 by Verizon. FM Radio was not installed.
On another site I discovered that other carriers use the NextRadio app. At first, the NextRadio app wouldn’t Install because it is not allowed on my Verizon phone.
So, I sneakily found the APK on internet.
From the website I downloaded the file to my Verizon HTC M8. Using a file manager, I located the file on phone, tapped it, and it installed with no problem
I am listening to the FM radio as I type this.
Yahoo won’t let me upload the APK file, but you can find it if you search for : com.nextradioapp.nextradio.apk
      regards from Marla

After a big run-around, I purchased an unlocked One (M8) directly from HTC, ended my Verizon contract, went to AT&T, and am loving the FM feature. I was within my new contract’s 14-day window to return everything and cancel the plan, so I was instructed there would be no Early Termination Fee by the Verizon rep. Two weeks later they tried to slam me with $350. It took some effort, but after speaking with several people (all with different interpretations of policies SMH) I finally got them to remove the entire ETF. In the end, it was way more expensive than just learning how to intall an APK, but I’m glad I’m off Verizon. However I am disappointed to hear the unlocked version doesn’t support Visual Voicemail on AT&T, only the carrier branded version #thatslife

  • El_Big_CHRIS

Thanks for the vid. I was kinda on the fence about it but after watching and seeing in person, I want it. Does anyone know if Verizon does have a gold option? I went to Oceanside, CA and the rep told me she was able to get them (Corp store). My understanding was that best buy had the exclusive

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

They are a best buy exclusive from what I udnerstand. So if you’re ready to upgrade go best buy. If you’re going full price best buy will gouge you

      • El_Big_CHRIS

Is best buy’s that more expensive? I have to do full price to keep unlimited, but I never bought thru them at full price

        • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

For the gold looks like Best Buy is going for $750 full price (WTF) . . . Verizon’s in store colors are $600…. Best Buy doesn’t want you buying full price because they make their money off you signing a contract.

          • El_Big_CHRIS

Oh good god that’s so much. I wonder if anyone who doesn’t mind the color would be willing to trade their gold one for whichever color I get :/

          • MvP77

Best buy will price match if you get a god sales associate willing to price match the different sku.

          • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

That might be a long shot…but worth a shot. They’re pretty picky about the mobile phones.

          • MvP77

Yeah it is a long shot. It has worked though. My friend got the price dropped on a black One on att because of the price match of the silver One on verizon.

    • Aaron Sibold

When I talked to the VZW rep, he told me they do not have them currently, but will very soon. So only BB has a time exclusive of the gold.

    • T_Dizzle

I called and got the buy one get one and they offered me the gold one.

  • aaron

I can’t get the lock screen widgets is there a setting that has to be turned on?

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Yes?… I remember that being a setting on my M7 that you have to turn on…. Hopefully Kellen can shed more light.

    • TimeHunter

Settings | Security | Enable lock screen widgets.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Cool. Will check this out when I get home…. Chromecast..On!

  • Video still processing. It’ll get better. 😛

    • Kane Desousa

      Thanks for this!

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Okay Kellen you still haven’t said if this will be your next daily driver…..
