Spec Comparison: Nexus 5 vs. iPhone 5s vs. Galaxy Note 3 vs. Moto X and More

nexus 5 official

Whenever a new flagship phone from almost anyone is announced, we try to toss together a quick spec comparison sheet of it versus the competition, so that you can see what we’re working with. Since the Nexus 5 is most definitely in “flagship” territory – it’s Google’s only phone after all – then we thought it was time.

So here is how the new Nexus 5 compares to the iPhone 5S, Galaxy Note 3, Moto X, G2, and more in terms of specs.

  • TylerChappell

This spec sheet should be adjusted ever-so-slightly to mention that the iPhone 5s does NOT have wireless-ac capability, only n. The amount of shortcuts and corners Apple gets away with while selling mid-range devices at premium prices is disturbing.

  • WungFu

    loving my G2

    Here’s another chart.

  • udispyn

Isn’t that the ipoeple version of every android phone that comes out.

  • JeffColorado

Your stupid flash picture viewer or whatever covers the top of my browser window with some twitter crap I don’t care about. Can’t read the top row.

  • Marcus

This is why Verizon pisses me off. LOL They’re the only company that has coverage at my parents house- and they live in the COUNTRY of north carolina. I have an iPhone– reason is I have Verizon and I want all my updates. — No Carrier blockage lol Companies should refuse Verizon until they’re willing to give.. If Google pushed all updates through the Play store, it’d definitely be no competition. I know its a stupid reason– but If I have a GS4 on Verizon and my friend has the same on AT&T and his phone has teh latest version of Android and I’m waiting 2 months down the line for the same update… -petpeeve!

So I manage to struggle along with my Gnex for almost two years by purchasing extended batteries only to make it this far to be screwed over by Verizon/Google and their inability to get along? Thanks!

    • BobbyG

      Get a G2

      • FudgedOver

I just got a Zero Lemon 5900mah battery off of Amazon and it’s awesome with it’s own case. You guys are dead on. I’ve been looking at the Moto X and G2. Unlimited data here so I’ve been thinking of picking up one of those on swappa. I’m used to the “pure” OS and don’t want garbage. I heard the G2 isn’t too bad.

    • ToddAwesome

You can get the extended batteries for free now from the Sprint website. Free battery, free shipping. Just an FYI, I’m on my 3rd now as well.

      EDIT: I’m on VZW.

    • dragonflyr

G2 is the closest you’ll get. $99 with rebate/vzwdeal. absolute killer phone. a little tweaking needed to the UI .. but a beast of a phone it is.

  • Solid_State_Drive

So…my G2 is like ..hmm….Nexus 5 big brother??? But seriously, I nearly hit the purchase button last night for the 32GB version but after looking at the specs I got to the conclusion that, apart for KK, i got a better phone with better battery on a unbeatable price ($129 at Costco w/ 2yr contract on AT&T).

    • Joe Golden

Funny how we can read the same thing and get different conclusions. I see the $349 no contract price as much better than a price of 129 with a 2 year contract. The battery is pretty close. They’ll have similar talk times but you’ll get a tiny bit more with the LG and the bigger battery doesn’t mean much because it’s going towards the slightly bigger display. Other than that they’re pretty identical. I don’t see 1 hour of battery and .2″ of screen worth $300 in non contract price.

  • abhele

does anyone know officially what sim it take micro or nano ?

  • cozybop

I find it hilarious that people are complaining about how the iPhone compares to the other items on the list when these people don’t even own or intend to own an iPhone. Save your breath for more important things people.

  • crazed_z06

    Note 3 = BEAST

  • http://turbofool.com Jarrett Lennon Kaufman

Note 3 seems like an odd choice, since while insanely popular, it fills a very different niche than the other phones in this list.

  • cmonnats23

That fingerprint reader though… I mean, what an innovation! No other phone has it! I MUST purchase a phone with it. iPhone all the way!

    /s

    • bionicwaffle

The Moto Atrix had it first a few years ago. Other Android phones have it coming as well from the sounds of it.

Now that Apple has such a great fingerprint reader all they need to do is give the iPhone a bigger screen, bigger battery, and a decent mobile operating system and it will be able to compete with Android!

    • Anon

I don’t get why that gets its own line, but always on voice recognition doesn’t. One seems like it might occasionally be useful and the other is a finger print reader.

  • edmicman

Notice Verizon is available on everything but the Nexus 5? I don’t care if Google has a falling out or what, they dropped the ball. It’s great and all, but if it’s competing with the big boys then they need to be on all the carriers. Otherwise it’s a niche product at best.

    • Liderc

Agree. No matter what the problem was, Google failed to provide the phone on the biggest and most widely used network in the US. That is a failure to me.

      • GentlemanScholar

Did either of you have the abomination that is the VZW Galaxy Nexus? I have one and bought the Nexus 5 this morning. Verizon screwed the pooch. Current kernel version for their GNex is from November 2012. That’s one year ago since an OTA update. What a joke Verizon is when it comes to updates.

  • Bryan Moross

Don’t want to be nitpicking, but I think the Note 3 also has a microUSB 3.0 port.

  • Michael

Moto X…. the phone for those of us that have grandfathered unlimited data on Verizon.

    • Anthony Bottari

It’s on my list of potential upgrades cause I’m not leaving VZW while i still have my grandfathered plan

      • Michael

closest thing to a Nexus on VZW. I’m pretty happy with mine. Unfortunately there seems to be a glitch with the bluetooth connecting to my 4runner. The albums show up on the 4runner’s screen when using google music which is great but when i get calls it flakes out and i cant hear the calls through the car.

        • Matt

G2 with CM is probably closer. Both wonderful kits!

        • Chris Choncek

As I had been saying in other posts, I think the VZ G2 trumps the Nexus to be honest. Sure you don’t get the overhyped “stock” android, but you get a better battery and camera in my opinion. Plus, the LG UI is not as bad as some make it out. LG provides a lot of useful tools that eliminates the need for 3rd party apps.

          • ToddAwesome

How are the LG radios? I’ve struggled through 3G/4G handoffs for too long with Samsung, never had this issue with Motorola, curious how LG is.

          • skubadoo

I had the Gnex before my G2, had major probs with Samsung. The LG radios are pretty seamless between 3G/4G and I’m getting better reception in places where it used to be lacking a bit. Overall, huge upgrade.

          • Damon Nevils

I’m having issues with wi-fi to 4g and 4g to wifi… data freezes temporarily all other transitions are seamless… Additionally I get great reception, much better than some of the Samsungs I have owned…Still moving on to the N5… I had the Nexus 4 and LOVED it, got to go back to stock.

          • Chris Choncek

On my G2, no problems for me.

      • Suralin

You won’t be disappointed if you go with the Moto X. Incredibly smooth and long lasting battery. If you get the dev edition, you could flash custom roms with the unlockable bootloader, but even if you decided to just get the Verizon retail, you would find it hard to justify an unlockable bootloader with how smooth it is (you can still root and the custom launchers only seem to make the phone appear smoother).

        • Anthony Bottari

Good to know..I’m thinking at the moment , MotoX, G2, Note3 ..my only concern with the X is speaker quality and camera cause they are awful on my GNex ..I need to handle them all in person still.

          • hushdrops

It’s funny with all of that have suffered Thur then GNex , camera , speaker , radio , battery life etc.
I’m ready to update but how without losing unlimited data unless paying full retail. May be time to switch carriers…

        • A.Miller

I may find out. Right now I’m buying the Nexus 5 and test-driving ATT’s network while keeping my GNex on VZW and its account.

If I can’t handle ATT, I’ll try the Moto X.

    • hushdrops

But won’t you have to pay full retail for the Moto X to keep unlimited data?

      • Michael

Not always. I have 5 phones on my plan. I added my parents to my plan and provided them with a smart phone this past year. I transfer my upgrade to that phone, upgrade activate and then just switch the sims. , i’ve done it for my Moto X and my wifes Note 3 without issues.

        • hushdrops

Got it, you have several lines – I just have two , my wife and myself and it’s a bit too much trouble to add extra lines just to keep unlimited VZW data, I think in a few weeks once our contract is up it is time to move on – even with a corp discount we pay way too much for VWZ and no way I’m going to continue to pay a very high monthly rate plus pay full retail on a new phone (in order to keep unlimited data) – i guess it is time to seek out other carrier info…

          thanks for the info

  • M3D1T8R

This chart really shows just how gawdawful the Iphone is. It’s lierally over two years behind. 1gb ram, 1570mah battery? Ridiculous. And the real sad thing is I just ordered one on a dumphone line upgrade to resell for profit. Just because people are so dumb they’ll pay $750+ for the piece of junk.

    • Kurt Weber

Was it the gold one? You’d get a ton for that one…

    • Maxim∑

Its not really junk and your comment of “I just bought one to resell it” makes no sense, also keep mind its 4in and doesn’t need that much power. Android and iOS system requirements are still very different. We will see how much 4.4 can change that though

  • kdiperi

note 3 STILL DOMINATES !!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOHOOOOO LOVE THIS THING

  • ddfuji

Oh shucks. Nexus 5 just lost me…. No finger print scanner.

  • John T. Wildman

Good specs, but most on the list are respectable.
If having a stock experience is a must, the Nexus is in line with other flagship devices. The deal breaker for me is the smaller non removable battery and lack of expandable storage. I could get by with cloud service(maybe), but never again will I purchase a phone that I can’t replace the battery.
Is it too much trouble to slap a hdmi port on all these devices? No add on’s.. Just a simple plug and go port.

  • starnovsky

Should be comparing off contract prices. Then the clear winner will emerge itself.

    • needa

you get what you pay for.

      • calculatorwatch

        …and more ;)

        • needa

no. not really. maybe this one will be different. but every nexus phone previous to this one has had some el-cheap-o hardware inside. hopefully… that hardware, meaning radios, speakers, etc, has evolved enough to where even with it being the cheapest they could find… it will still be good. even the soc is lower grade than what is put in other phones. when it comes to nexus build quality… its always been really bad. little to no shielding. cheap clips holding things together etc.
it is what it is. no way around it. cause contrary to popular belief… google and lg both make a profit on the sale of the nexus phone.

      • starnovsky

Except not there. Other phones in this price range is low-to-midrange crap. Nexus is not. Anything else with 1080 screen and Snapgragon 800 for this price? Nope. Not even close.

  • Wally J

The Nexus 5 seems decent except for the RAM, Camera and Battery.

    • Skittlez

      lolwut?

    • starnovsky

RAM is 2Gb, you need more?

  • Bob

I have a order in for the Nexus 5 and I spoke to a rep from VW and they said that they will activate the phone. Am I missing something? Will i be getting the same service?

    • flosserelli

That rep is either clueless or smoking crack. Or both.

      • Bob

Yeah, spoke to another rep and they will not activate it…. Bastards…..

  • patrick

on verizon and i’m still thinking the x when motomaker is available. they said it was going to get 4.4. they wouldn’t lie…right, guys?

  • ZOMGMOTOXDABESTZOMGMOTOBLUR

This phone poops all over that Moto X and is half the price of it off contract…. RIP Homo X

    • fjitb

      RIP Hetero Douche

  • donkeykong85

all i have to say is verizon is the worst. wish i was one of the ones getting this phone.

    • NexusMan

If I like, I’m dumping Verizon like a bad habit when my contracts finally over in December.

  • MikeSaver

I don’t understand the battery times, the moto x has 24 hour susage with 2200 mAh, but the G2 has 18 with 3000?

    • DoctorJB

? G2 has the 800, moto x has an S4 together with a bunch of low power processors. The G2 is much faster, the moto x has lower power draw.

      • Skittlez

i believe they have the same voltage on processors. the moto x is just programmed to process differently because of always listening

    • brkshr

720p and 4.7″ display on Moto X vs 1080p 5.2″ display on G2. Size and resolution works against the battery. Moto is also good at optimizing for battery life, as well as the X having ulta-low power processors for various sensors.

    • jamdev12

Processor on MotoX is more efficient. Unlike the G2 that has to use its main CPU for doing anything, the MotoX has 6 other processors that have specific functions and they are of lower power.

      • Liderc

No, the Moto X has a smaller and lower quality screen. Its 720P Screen is why it’s battery lasts longer than the G2′s 1080P 5.2” screen.

    • NexusMan

All of the already mentioned answers are correct, as well as the fact that Moto is mostly stock and not pushing all that crapware.

    • Mort

      Mmmmmmm… 24 hour sausage…

      • an0nim0

You know Castor Troy likes ‘em.

      • Anthony Bottari

oh thank god i’m not the only one that read it like that lol

    • Skittlez

don’t listen to that. i’ve never gotten less than 24 hours on my G2. actually, i’m at 50% right now after 17 hours 35 min on CM

    • Liderc

G2 has a much better and larger screen, which is why it uses its larger battery quicker.

    • M3D1T8R

The screens. 4.7″ 720p vs 5.2″ 1080. That’s a lot more pixels to push around. And other optimizations /CPU, and probably different testing methodology.
edit: didn’t see others had already answered this, due to funny Homer pic below.

    • Gasaraki

The Moto X time is overstated and the G2 time is understated.

      • angermeans

Source, or are you just talking out your ass?

    • angermeans

A combination of a 720p display vs 1080p, smaller display, and better software. Why do you think the iPhone 5s keeps its own with every Android phone despite having a 1570 battery? Battery size means nothing. This is why I don’t get why every Android OEM was so quick to get 1080p displays. They are not that much better than 720p, but you pay with battery and performance when pushing that many more pixels. I think Moto and Google did a great job with the X. Nice phone that gets great power out of the S4 Pro and still can claim great battery life.

  • Hayden7200

Why don’t you guys ever put the Droid Maxx in these comparisons? It’s always the Moto X and no one ever mentions the Maxx. I really like the Moto X, don’t get me wrong, but I think the Maxx looks far better on paper than the X does. It matches up better with other manufacturer’s devices.

    • Adrynalyne

Verizon exclusive is why, not to mention being a Moto X with a larger battery and screen.

      • Hayden7200

A larger battery and a bigger screen are perfect for spec comparisons. And yes, I know it’s only on Verizon but isn’t that what the “Carrier” row is for?

        • MikeSaver

they said they only put flagship phones. Moto X is Moto’s flagship not the DROID Maxxx. And maybe the ultra is the flagship droid one. Either way, they aren’t different enough to really warrant being on there.

        • Ej McCarty

Yeah I mean they feel the need to include a fingerprint scanner row lol

    • Elwin Gill

I totally agree, the MAXX has wireless charging, a killer battery… and looks better IMHO than the X. Just sayin!

      • MikeSaver

        lol

    • Droids_are_gay

Probably because nobody cares about that junk device. Droid branded devices are dead. There was ONLY ONE good Droid ever and that as we all know was the original. So yeah that’s why. Nobody gives a shiitttt, RIP Droids.

      • M3D1T8R

The Incredible was fantastic, stillstill maybe my favorite phone ever; my wife still uses it as a little WiFi device over 3 1/2 years since I got it at launch. And I’m currently using a DNA that I got as a free G.Nex insurance replacement (after 5 bad G.Nex’s) and it’s pretty great really. I’d like larger storage, and the battery could be bigger, but it’s far and away better than the G.Nex (or the S3 I had before that). So there’s two other great “Droid” phones right there. Not that I give a rat’s ass about Verizon Droid branding, but since you brought it up… Incidentally the new Maxx also seems like an excellent device from the testing I’ve done, as well as everything I’ve read.

      • Gasaraki

Wow, you are an idiot. You are on a site called Droid Life. The Droid X was a great phone.

    • Liderc

Droid devices are terrible right now. Their design is atrocious and they are so far off of what people around here are interested in that it’s shameful to the Droid name.

      • Sporttster

I was all in for the new Droid Maxx till I found out there’s no HDMI out and no SD card slot. Now the proud owner of a Note 3….

        • A.Miller

I could live w/o HDMI out (and I guess I can live w/o the SD slot since I’m getting a Nexus 5) but agree that SD slot and replaceable battery is huge.

    • dcc_tech

It’s supposed to be Droid Life, so Droid Maxx should be there by default IMO

  • http://petervideos.com/ Peter Mansour

how dare this be compared against the “almighty” iphone..

    • MicroNix

I know. Comparing the iPhone to the almighty Nexus line really isn’t fair!

      • http://petervideos.com/ Peter Mansour

i cannot wait to shove this phone in my iphone friends throat… some of them literately..

  • Kyle Wilkins

Doesn’t matter. The screen on the Nexus 5 causes cancer. Count me out. http://www.youtube.com/v/0nEc03yAHQA&hl=en_US&fs=1&

    • John Moore

You’ve done this community a service.

      • Kyle Wilkins

Don’t thank me. Thank user bfjdsn for posting it earlier. I just think Google and LG need to be exposed for their real agendas behind the Nexus 5 and the Nexus program as a whole.

      • HarvesterX

I was diagnosed with adult onset ADHD over the course of a year with many scans done. It was brought on hby a car accident. I have been on Adderall since 2006 and I can’t imagine life without it. If my so was diagnosed though with it as a child, there is no way in this world I’d give gig any stimulants. They can stunt the growth in a child’s/adolescent’s mental and physical progress. Once he turns 18 it’s his choice (and the “stunting” effects will decrease the older one becomes obviously). But as for my 36 year old body… Yes. Ritilan though is a horrible medication. They tried me on that first and I shaved it back at them. It’s a great medication for those who abuse because of how it feels when, well taken other ways. But I wish they’d pull thst off the market to be honest. Cleaner amphetamines work much better. I’ve been talking to my doctor agouti switching to desoxyn. More expensive yes,.. But instead of amphetamine salts I’d be taking pure methamphetamine salts which is much cleaner on body the body.. Luckily I’m one of thkse types whl isn’t in to stimulants and the less stimulating it makes me feel the better. Desoxyn has a nice clean effect,. Adderall does as well. Ritilin made me jump out of my skin am d feel like a zombie. The only medication of thst sort thst didn’t actually claim me down some (like the adders all does). Anyways off topic yeah..

    • HarvesterX

That bites. The video has been removed due to some mess..

  • John Moore

Looks like it stands up to the competition quite nicely! With stock Android 4.4, it’s sure to be snappier than most. The battery life’s certainly nothing to scoff at either!
