Turn Any Regular TV Into a Smart TV With This Kickstarter Project Called “Pocket TV”

Another handy looking Kickstarter project has caught our attention, this time taking the form of a thumb-drive equipped with an HDMI male piece called Pocket TV. Once you plug the drive into your TV, you’ll be greeted by the stock Ice Cream Sandwich interface, allowing you to download Play Store apps, and have the Android OS right on your TV. Controlling is made easy with a custom remote and there will also be an app for Android and iPhone devices that will allow control of the TV that way too.

With its 512Mb of RAM, single core 1GHz processor, and 4GB of storage, this little machine packs quite the little punch. The project is at a healthy $70,000 already out of $100,000. And with only 34 days left to fulfill the needed amount, it’ looking like this piece of tech is soon to become a nice reality.

I was excited when I saw this, but my biggest fear about it ended up being true… This doesn’t turn your TV into a ‘smart’ TV at all. To do that, you’d need either a TV tuner built into the dongle or an HDMI pass-through like the Google TV set top boxes have.

This is really no different than just running an HDMI cable to a Galaxy Nexus. Not bad for the price… but not really what it claims to be, either.

    • http://www.greenless.com Lex Lybrand

To be fair, though, there are enough streaming options available to make this pretty attractive. If you’re running HBO GO, TWC TV, MLB At Bat, NHL Gamecenter, Watch ESPN, and Hulu Plus it might not be too shabby.

I also thought about that and i was looking into ways to stream tv to the pocket tv and i think it sould work with the slingbox or hauppauge broadway.

Just bring Motorola Android High End (Dual Core or Quad Core) and Motorola Travel Adapter, Micro HDMI Cable so can use in any TV with HDMI Port.

At first I thought this was something that would allow you to mirror your phones screen, or stream media on your TV if you dont have a DLNA enabled tv.

  • RReese

I would love to get one for sure

This +’Leap (Or Kinect) = Giant ass Air touch tablet

Okay, I’m down with the pocket sized Google TV dongle, but what’s up with the huge ARM PIMPLE on the chick in red?

    • http://twitter.com/garagelogician Jeff C

I was too busy looking at her tits to notice any pimple.

  • Lon Diffenderfer

I hope this is not advertised in the same way to the general public as it is being presented here. The “Turn Any Regular TV” part is not at all true. There are many people still using television sets that do not contain HDMI ports. I can see many older people who don’t have the best understanding of today’s technology purchasing this thinking that they will be able to turn their old sets into “Smart TVs.” Not so.

  • Eleebob

Why is everyone saying they’ll buy it when it comes out? Just back them for $145, you get one and the remote. Or for $280, you get two.

  • ddevito

Yeah. Its called Google TV. Punks.

    • Sp4rxx

yeah without all the expensive hardware and wires punk!

      • ddevito

I’ll be the first one to criticize Google TV, but at least the idea was right. Integrate a device and services with the SAME INPUT and EXPERIENCE with your TV, not a separate input and experience.

This will fail with the other 3000 Android TV USB devices (cotton candy, etc).

  • Jeff “BIG RED”

    Once it’s out I’m buying 2 or 3!!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/john.sebeny John Sebeny

    i’m so getting one!

  • luniz7

ill buy this if it isnt outrageously priced

    • Sp4rxx

Same here! Considering they are 70%+ in to their goal this looks highly promising!

      • michael arazan

I got the hdmi / hmi adapter withan hdmi cord for $30 that connects and mirrors my gnex to my tv so i can use some games and my browser and web content straight to my tv. I don’t see the difference since a lot of phones can do this for you already.

        • justincase_2008

I use my xoom that same way but you’re limited to be at cord length away from the tv.

  • mog386

These ones have a remote with it, which I don’t think either of the other two units like this that came out have…interesting…

  • http://www.facebook.com/BKHKMTP Victor Tenntungfui

    Yea! This device looks awesome.

  • SeanBello

    this is pretty sweet!

  • http://profiles.google.com/drastik651 Jim Kalista

dont they already sell something like this??

    • SeanBello

I think it’s just a thumb drive that has ICS on it so you can have it on your PC

      • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

Thumb drives don’t have processors, GPUs, micro sd card slots, or compatible with universal remotes…

cool link to a computer. thumb drives are just flash memory.

          • SeanBello

no, but there are thumb drive that are used for flash memory. SD, micro SD, Sony Memory Stick, etc. are also examples of flash memory. a thumb drive is a general term for a small storage device that has a built in USB connection with flash memory built into it.

          • Sp4rxx

except you are using a link to prove that a pc the “size” of the thumb drive is just another thumb drive …. no standard thumb drive has a processor or gpu with VOLATILE ram on it.

          • SeanBello

it is a thumb drive by definition, and not a pc by definition. a pc consists of a system unit, monitor, keyboard, and mouse with ports that connect peripheral devices. stop trying to argue semantics, you’re making something simple sound like you have no idea what you’re talking about.

          • Sp4rxx

That’s not “just a thumb drive” doofus.

          • SeanBello

I’m sorry, my mistake. It’s not “just” a thumb drive. It’s a thumb drive. I think your phone has something wrong with it, doofus.

Yes, they do. There are at least two that I know of, and I think both have better prices and nicer processors (and more RAM). However, what you get with this is the remote app and the actual remote, plus the developers have publicly said they will update the software (even though we know that’s not a realistic promise). Also I think the other ones have a HDMI female port, so you’ll need a cable as well.

Either way, I am probably not getting one anytime soon.

      • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

If they have female then they are useless imo. The benefit to having this it that i don’t have to bring a cable around for my phone all the time.
Im with you. As cool as this is im not going to get one.

        • http://twitter.com/kirilv Kiril

Well, I wouldn’t go as far as useless. I don’t see myself carrying something this around (no matter how cool the video makes it seem). Rather, I would always have it plugged into my TV, so the cable is no big deal. Also, the way this one is set up, you can’t really use it with a wall-mounted TV unless it has a side HDMI port… I guess both have pros and cons.
