Many Android fans were looking forward to today being the official launch day for Android 14. Unfortunately, it’s looking like its release has been delayed, to the surprise of not just Android users, but even OEMs (Android device manufacturers).
According to Mishaal Rahman on Twitter who spoke to a source, the source code release of Android 14 has been delayed to next month. It’s noted that vulnerabilities detailed in the latest security release notes will be published on October 4, meaning that could be our new day.
Is it a coincidence that October 4 is also the Pixel 8’s unveiling date? It seems unlikely and for the first time in Android history, we may have an AOSP release happen on the same day as a Pixel device launch.
For everyone who was refreshing websites and tapping the software update button on your Pixel phone, you can go ahead and stop that today. We’ll report as we learn more.

Most of the bug fixes I’ve seen in the last couple beta releases, fix issues for the pixel fold. My guess is Google is pushing the fold (duh) and want their first folding phone to be “perfect”.
Guess it wouldn’t look so good for Google to have years old OEMs devices running their precious Android 14 even before their latest Pixels 8
How can something that never had an announced release date be delayed?
So OnePlus is going to release android 14 for its phones before Google!!?? Lmao
That’s unlikely. OnePlus will probably delay too.
Yikes.
Besides some customization options, what exactly is it groundbreaking on 14 or all that different from 13? I get better battery life and all that but anything else ?
Nothing. Almost none of the new stuff will affect the 99% use case for normal users, in my opinion. Hence why I could not care less that this isn’t out yet. Android hasn’t been exciting for a while now. It’s usually just cosmetic updates to add more white space to reduce information density and adding new emoji.
Google gets more annoying every year
Is it really a delay? I might have missed something but I don’t remember seeing anything conclusively saying that Android 14 would be out in September. Android 12 was released in October so an October release wouldn’t be unusual for recent years.
Yes it would be a delay as beta 5 was released on Aug 10 and that is the last beta build listed on the timeline. So not normal to wait almost 2 more months after the last beta build was released.
Nope, as long as there was no announced date there is no delay, they can take as long as needed between last beta and release, nothing says it’s a month.
Pixel Android 12 update came 41 days after the final beta build.
There have also been two additional beta builds since 14 Beta 5 (5.1 and 5.2). 5.2 was only released on the 25th.
So no, this timeline isn’t all that crazy or unprecedented. You could argue that 5.1 and 5.2 weren’t originally planned and yes, that may be true. But it’s also true that we usually don’t see stable for 1 month or more after the last beta build so nothing here should be new or unexpected.
Android 12 was the only version released in October in recent years, so yes it is unusual. For example, Android 7 came out in August, Android 8 came out in August, Android 9 came out in August, Android 10 came out in September, Android 11 came out in September, Android 12(the outlier) came out in October, and Android 13 came out in August.
But it definitely isn’t unheard of. Even in recent years. Plus, they had more than the planned number of beta releases so October is definitely a real possibility. Also, like I said, I’m pretty sure no official statement has been made for any specific month for release.
Isn’t unheard of? There’s only been 1 version of Android that’s been released in October since 2015, which of course was Android 12(I’d argue it was released later than usual cause of the new design overhaul of material you).
Not trying to argue or anything, just saying it’s a lil bit unusual, haha.
Personally I’d only look at recent history for guessing release dates. No more than the last three years. In that context August, September and October were equally likely. Of course August is on longer possible. So considering recent history September and October seem equally likely. That is until you consider the beta releases compared to recent history.
Android 13 only had 4 beta releases with the final beta release being released on July 13th 2022. The final release was on August 15 2022. About a month later. That’s about a month between the final beta and the final release. Android 13 went all the way to beta 5.2 that came out on August 26th. Android 12’s last beta was beta 5 which came out in early September 2022. So based on that it looks like a very late September or early October date is likely for the final release of Android 14. And that is assuming beta 5.2 is the final beta.
If I had to guess I’d say September 25th at the earliest. There are actually rumors that are saying October 4th which is when the Pixel 8 is being announced.
Anyone on the BETA already has the expected experience
I’m on the beta there’s no issues Google just wants to drop it on Oct 4
The first beta, had issues (duh) the 2nd was better and for me, I really haven’t had any issues since.
Other than the beta number, I can’t find anything different.
Most of the last 2-3 betas from the release notes, fixed issues with pixel fold for the most part.
If it means a more stable experience and reduced bugs, I’m all for that.
This is Google we’re talking about…
I’m not sure how this can be taken as a definite but it does make sense….make the splash with the 8/8Pro….I just hope we see a potential security update for 13 this month instead.
Not really all that surprising. Even if it released next week, it would have been the smallest time gap between the last beta release and full release.
