Essential, which has had a very confusing year or so, acquired CloudMagic today. The company that formerly made Newton Mail will join Essential to “help accelerate our product roadmap,” an Essential spokesperson said.

What’s the deal here? We don’t really know, to be honest. Essential has gone from making phones to a home hub to phones again, all while slashing its workforce and trying to move forward after stories like this one on Andy Rubin. We don’t know what they’ll do with CloudMagic because we don’t even know what Essential does as a company any longer.

And look, CloudMagic doesn’t even make an email app anymore. They shut down Newton Mail earlier this year. So Essential probably wants them for some smarts, possibly for their rumored AI phone. That’s all a giant shrug, though, until one of the two companies lets us know what’s up.
