Google’s AR Stickers, a feature first revealed during the October 4 Pixel hardware event, is now available on all Pixel phones, including the original Pixel and new Pixel 2 lines. You’ll need to update a couple of apps in order to get them, but we’ve got both linked below for quick access.
What are AR Stickers? Google explains it as a Mode in your camera, which is exactly what it is. You open your camera, slideout the side menu to access modes, and then choose AR Stickers. From there, you’ll see a range of AR Stickers that can be added to your live scene. You just drag and drop them into your camera viewfinder and they’ll then be a part of your video or picture to spice up the action. To control them, feel free to use two fingers to pinch and zoom or drag them further to put each item in the right spot.
Google has included a handful of Star Wars items, food-like emoji (“foodmoji”), the ability to type out words in various fonts, props, and Stranger Things characters.
Again, you’ll need the updates below on your Pixel and then you should be all set.
NOTE: You may need to be on Android 8.1. Everyone on 8.1 seems to be able to update, while those not yet on 8.1 are getting a “not compatible” listing.

Maybe but the 8.1 note at the top so people don’t waste their time like I did trying to get it to work. It is beta, don’t fool people.
Not very useful, but it’s a fun toy to play with. I like how the characters will track you with their faces and turn to look at you if you go behind them. The interaction between characters is cool too, but it needs more. The stormtrooper is definitely the best (both in quality of appearance and behavior) and it’s fun how he tells you to stop when you walk up to him, though you have to get a bit too close to trigger it (maybe intentional?).

Right? Who knew they’d be so much fun? R2D2, BB8 and a Storm Trooper were just hanging out in front of my brand new SONY OLED.
What’s odd is that they have sound effects but they only record on the video based on the Media Volume you have while recording. I guess that’s handy, but it was not obvious. I took a few videos and there was no sound. I just assumed it didn’t have it, but stumbled upon it.

It’s bloatware. I didn’t have a choice. I was prompted to update these. The base apps are part of 8.1. Didn’t know that till today. For unrooted users, disabling is the only option to prevent future update notifications. If it was truly optional the base wouldn’t not be included in 8.1 to allow the play store updates.
Let me know how many GBs it will take from your at least 32Gb storage.
You can also uninstall in the Play store. Jeesh. Some people always want to complain.
The more they port the new features to my OG Pixel, the more I’m glad I didn’t upgrade to the new one. Still rock solid, and feels fresh with new software.

Try clearing data of “Google Services Framework” in Settings-> Apps & notifications -> See all apps -> ‘Show system’ (top right three dot menu). Restart the phone & check for update. You should get it instantly. Works on Google editions, not sure about Verizon model. But there is no harm trying. Let me know.

They did. If you didn’t get the update, if you still get “System is up to date” on 8.0. Just clear data of “Google Services Framework” in Settings-> Apps & notifications -> See all apps -> ‘Show system’ (top right three dot menu). Restart the phone & check for update. You’ll get it instantly.

Considering this comes with the 8.1 update, they didn’t really make choices.

After seeing this article, I started up Google Play, and saw that these two apps were waiting to upgrade. Tried out a couple AR stickers. Works pretty much as advertised at Google IO. Had BB-8 and R2-D2 running around my office messing with each other. Pretty cool. Not sure I’ll really use this much, but still…

I am on 8.1 and updated those two apps in the Google Play Store and still don’t have an option in the camera app to add stickers.
Never mind, had to force quit the camera app in order for it to show up.
