A two part question – Where will you be going for the upcoming Holiday? and when you go on vacation, which phone and/or tablet do you take with you? I’m headed to Palm Springs the day after Christmas, and then I head out to New Orleans for New Years. taking with me my Moto X and Nexus 7 (2013).
My contract is up next week for my Verizon Galaxy Nexus but I’m still satisfied with it. Only negative is battery life. Can’t decide on what phone I should get if I got one now or should I wait for something later this spring. I just don’t want to sit on an upgrade too long and be stuck with my next phone without an upgrade when I want the next phone. Completely satisfied with my family share Verizon plan.

If Google were to release a Nexus tablet in the form factor of an iPad mini (like the oft-rumored Nexus 8), would you still prefer the Nexus 7, or would you switch? For me, 8″ is the perfect tablet size, but I’m curious about your opinions.
why is it so annoying not having active display?

I’m due for a new phone the first of January. I’m on Verizon and plan to stay there. Which phone options are the most future-proof? I generally only upgrade once every 2 years and like to get the most life out of the phone. Any suggestions?
I recommend the Moto X, I’m giving a gift card to my girlfriend so she can upgrade from her Galaxy S3 in the first week of January when her update is up. I myself got the Moto X, coming from a Droid Razr Maxx, I had to get off contract as I have an unlimited data plan. The reason I recommend the Moto X is that it has nice software features : Active Notifications, Touch-less Controls, and Clear Pixel Camera & Gestures. The fact that this phone is the only non nexus device on 4.4 speaks volumes about how much this phone will be supported over the next 2 years. The flagships from LG, the G2, and Samsung,the Galaxy S4, have yet to see 4.4 yet. It might not have an S800 2.3 GHZ processor and a 5″ display, but with my friends having the device try to make the phone lag and having no such luck that should make you feel rest assured that the X8 computing platform is doing it’s just despite it not having that S800 processor. I think specs can be great, but without good optimization you can throw a bunch of cores and RAM at the problem but it wont provide solutions. I think that’s why Motorola said why throw cores and RAM when we can solve the problem with better software optimization. I only upgrade every 2 years myself, but with me having unlimited data. I have to choose phones carefully as I am paying full price for them. If you have unlimited data I would ask for a code from someone on the Droid-life comments so you can get 150$ off the phone if you’re not then get it for 99$ on contract. Hope that helps your decisions.

I have unlimited data, but I’m not sure I could come up with the $350 or $400 for the off contract price. I don’t actually use that much data anyway. Unlimited is nice, but I’m on Wi-Fi most of the day

The Hangouts update today might help you on that MMS issue. Expect rolling staged updates.

Thanks for the input. I am thinking about getting one or the other for my girlfriend, who will use it strictly for reading. She has zero interest in modding. I was leaning toward the Kindle, especially since Amazon is slashing $50 today.
Does the LG G2 come with ear buds..Mine didnt however my first thought was that they forgot to place them in the box. My moms S4 and my wife S3 and HTC ONE came with them.

Why are Verizon’s tablet options so awful? No Nexus 7, no info on whether the new Nexus 10 (if it exists at all) will have LTE, no Note 10.1 2014 edition, no Surface Pro 2. Nothing. This should be as controversial as the delay in the wood! A little part of me regrets not being patient and going with woven black, but I do love the phone overall…
They must have done it because of the dev edition. (Which has a woven white back)

My wife is on the fence iPhone or Android (you pick the phone)…I am a true to heart android fan and try to sway her that way but she says that iPhone is faster and smoother. She tells me that she is not sure what she wants next. She currently has the iPhone 4s and I have the Galaxy S4 (both Big Red). Weigh in on the controversy for me and sway her one way or the other. I’d recommend Moto X because she kind of wants an iPhone – you could kind of consider it the iPhone of Android
Agreed, moto X. It’s almost the same feel in size with a bigger screen that offers more from a base phone perspective (listening capabilities, gestures, and active notifications). It’s just as smooth and fast. You can easily tell her that it’ll be smoother than your S4 (no offense). It will get timely updates as it has already shown. It’s customize-able. It’s cheaper, but runs just as good if not better than the iPhone. iPhone screens crack like no other and aren’t durable at all…..and the list goes on.
I have had 3 iphones, 1 ipad, 6 android phones, and 1 android tablet. I currently own a Note 2, which is undoubtedly the best android phone I have ever owned. That said, I still think iphone UI is smoother and more polished, but not necessarily “faster”. I get things done much more quickly & efficiently on my Note 2 than on my girlfriend’s iphone 5. That is because I know how to get things done in android. Your wife is used to iOS. If she switches to android, she will likely struggle for a few days figuring out how to do things and get information. If she is not a techie, she will need some hand-holding along the way. If she is familiar with your phone, she is halfway there. Remind her that Touchwiz does not equal android and that if she does not like TW, that does not necessarily mean android is a bad fit for her. Let her play with your S4 for a few days, then flash an aosp-style rom and let her see the difference. Then take her to the Verizon store and show her the future of phone UI. Show her the Moto X active notifications and Google Now integration. iOS 7 is not a huge leap from previous iOS versions, other than the UI tweaks. iOS 7 really does not offer any new features.
But remember, if you steer her toward android and she doesn’t like it, it will be your fault 😉

How can a T-Mobile Moto X owner get both the bootloaderand carrier unlocked?
I was under the assumption that the T-Mo version came carrier unlocked (same as GSM Developer Edition) and had an unlockable bootloader via Moto’s website. Am I wrong?

You mean the motomaker version is bootloader unlocked already? Or by website you mean moto can unlock the phone remotely?, etc
The Motorola bootloader unlock program supports the TMo version of the X. That’s what I meant

Well, titanium is strong for it’s weight. By volume, it is actually weaker than aluminum.

But, aluminum is way more ductile, dentable, and scratchable than titanium so I think titanium would make for a much better phone back, although quite a bit more expensive.
Is Chromecast ever going to open up to more developers/apps, or will it top out as an easy way to stream from a handful of major content distributors (Youtube, Netflix, Hulu, HBO, etc.)?
I don’t think that’s a question they can answer, but it is a good one.
The chromecast conference is this week so I would expect there SDK to be released and several new compatible apps

Question: Anyone else’s Moto Maker order from last Wed. have yet to ship? I got the “winter storm” excuse email on Friday and haven’t heard a thing since.

I just got the “Assembling” email with an estimation of tomorrow (which definitely isn’t happening)…. not a peep since.
If they finish assembling it today, you will probably get it tomorrow. They use FedEx overnight, which takes 1 day. For me it took 2 days, because of the winter storm on Friday.
Ooops. Wording. “I just got” should read “only.” And I got that email Thursday…. no shipping email. No update. Nothing. I called this afternoon…. They don’t even know where it is. :/
that’s pretty weird. I got the assembling email on Thursday at 2am, then later that day it shipped. I didn’t even know it shipped on Thursday, because they sent me the email saying it shipped on Friday. though when I checked the tracking number, it clearly said it shipped on Thursday.
Oh well. They are contacting someone about something or another. I’m to expect a phone call with an update sometime soon.

If you want here’s your tracking number to track your order. I don’t think they know we already get the tracking order from our order on the website.

I’m in the east coast, and honestly it doesn’t make sense how Motorola could get accessories that were ordered later get to you earlier. If I were you, I’d give them a call.
I did live chat support and the lady said here is your tracking number and that’s all she said and disconnected :|. That was so mean of her. I should try phone support instead. I find that weird myself, especially that there were status updates about my accessories on Friday morning ( between 2AM- 4AM) and Saturday, yes Saturday in the morning. The last update on my phone was informing my it’s leaving the facility for FedEX on Thursday evening. It still has the same information from Thursday not even a location change or added time for anything after from what I saw on Thursday.
I wouldn’t try contacting Motorola, but I would contact FedEx. I’ve read that if your order hasn’t updated in 24 hours, that you should contact them. You’ve far surpassed that, so that’s the only thing I could think of doing.
I just got off the phone with FedEx like 20 minutes ago. They give the same update. It’s in Texas and it should be here by Monday December 9th @ 8 PM. I’m like but it’s still in Texas, and my other order came from the same place and it’s almost at my house on a truck. They just said they’ve had weather delays and 3 planes were delayed Thursday. I feel like no one knows what’s going on with the 3 flights delayed because my accessories came on a 4th or what never number flight and they’re almost at my door. I’m running out of options to figure this out I feel like.
If it doesn’t come by 8 tonight, your estimated delivery will stay as N/A. It happened to me, so get prepared for that. All I can say is contact FedEx again if it still hasn’t updated by tomorrow. I have no other recommendations, so all I can say is good luck!
What I find weird is my order from last Cyber Monday, December 2nd was shipped on Thursday and is still in Fort Worth, Texas. I know they have been having severe storms causing delays, but when my order for accessories for my phone that I placed on Thursday, December 5th that started shipping late Thursday early Friday morning is almost at my house. I start to wonder how does that happen and what happened to my phone?
