Fixes Available to Bricked DROIDs after Froyo Update

by: | posted 08.19.10 | News, Tips

If you received the official FRG01B Android 2.2 update for your Motorola DROID and ran into a frozen device after installation, Verizon has fixes available.  While we have yet to hear from even a half dozen people with “bricked” devices following the update, we are aware that it is happening in rare instances.

With a non-bootable Droid in hand, feel free to reference the following files when entering a Verizon store’s tech support desk.  It might at least help them get in you the right direction a little quicker…

Files for FRG01B: Mot.RSD.A855_1.0.6.msi  |  Mot.Verizon.A855.Firmware_1.2.6.msi

And if someone were to stumble upon these specific file names in the wild, using them in RSD Lite as we’ve done in past rooting posts, should fix your device.  (Just saying!)

I’m curious though, any of our readers run into a frozen M logo after updating?

Cheers Matt!

Froyo is Confusing those who Vibrate and Silent their Devices

by: | posted 08.19.10 | News, Tips

One of the top frustrations for new Froyo users is clearly the way this version of Android goes into vibrate or silent mode.  When using the rocker volume switch on the Droid, you no longer have the opportunity to choose one or the other and it is killing some of you.  While this functionality is semi-absent, you now have 4 ways to customize your vibrate settings by simply going into Menu>Settings>Sound>Vibrate.

From there, you can configure your rocker switch to act similarly to the way it used to and more.  Obviously many of you are frustrated by this change, but we are hoping that this helps ease some of your volume adjusting pain.

Thoughts?  Feel free to express your frustrations with a smile and a rainbow.

Thursday Poll: Everyone have Android 2.2 for the DROID?

by: | posted 08.19.10 | Polls

Verizon told all employees that the Android 2.2 update for the original Droid should have completed by August 18th, but according to our inboxes, that doesn’t appear to be the case.  So today’s poll is as simple as it get; we just want to know if you’ve received the official OTA update or not…

THIS POLL IS JUST FOR NON-ROOTED USERS.  (I don’t care if you have a custom ROM, hah.)

A Froyo for DROID Question and Answer Session

by: | posted 08.16.10 | News

With the rollout of Android 2.2 for the Droid in full swing, we’ve seen a ton of questions pop up in both our inboxes and in the comments and thought it was time to put out some answers.  This likely won’t cover them all, but these are the ones we see just a tad more than the rest…

Q:  Will I still receive the OTA update if I manually updated?

A:  Nope.  You already have the official update if you manually updated, so there won’t be a notification any time on your phone to update.

Q:  What happened to FRG22?  Will I still receive it?

A:  We have reason to believe that it will come out over the next few weeks once FRG01B has finished.  FRG01B finishes on the 18th, so you can expect FRG22 some time after.

Q:  How can I downgrade back to 2.1 from 2.2?

A:  You can’t.  Well there are ways, but your phone is only going to continue to prompt you to update.  When Verizon and Motorola push an update to your phone, you just have to accept it.

Q:  Why isn’t Flash on my phone?

A:  Because it is a separate application that needs to be installed.  It will be in the market on August 18th (or now maybe?) to download, but if you can’t wait that long, download the beta here.

Q:  I’m rooted, running a custom ROM, and keep getting a notification to update.  Should I?

A:  If you are running a custom ROM, that likely means you also have a custom recovery image.  If this is the case, then you should accept the update and your custom recovery will block it.  This will also stop the notifications from continuing to appear.

Q:  Certain apps are now crashing after the update.  What can I do?

A:  Some apps are probably not ready for 2.2 and may crash until the developer makes it compatible.  One thing you can do though, is uninstall the app with issues and reinstall it.  For whatever reason, the update isn’t playing nice with everyone, but this can help.

Q:  Some of my paid apps are not showing after updating.  Why?

A:  We have to assume that these apps are not yet compatible with Android 2.2.  Just be patient, they should show up eventually when they get updated.  For now, if you could list any in the comments that seem to be missing, taht would greatly help us all.

Rumor: Android 2.2 Hitting DROID Incredible August 18th?

by: | posted 08.13.10 | News

Is the Droid Incredible the next Android device in line to receive Android 2.2?  The Motorola Droid and the HTC EVO are finishing up their updates right now and the Nexus One has had it forever, so it seems only reasonable that the DInc would be next.

Mashable is reporting that August 18th will be the day we see it take off.  With a couple of leaked Froyo builds in the wild already for the DI, we wouldn’t be surprised if this were to happen, we just haven’t had any of our sources confirm it.  It should also be noted that the Droid 1 update is due to finish by the 18th.  Coincidence?

To see how amazing Froyo is on the Incredible, check out this post of ours.
