Google and Mattel Hosting NYC Event February 13, Plan to Intro New Product

Google and Mattel are sending out invites to a special product announcement taking place February 13 in NYC, hosted during an annual toy convention. While nothing points to this unveiling as being Android related, the inclusion of View Master-like film at the top of the invite lends credit to the possibility that Google and Mattel intend to release something related to virtual reality.

The invite is tagged with the line, “View What’s Possible.” To us, it seems pretty clear that Google and Mattel intend to do something with viewing things, which leads us to have faith in the VR assumption.

It is unlikely this announcement will be live streamed, but we will be sure to keep you posted on what they release.

Any guesses?

    • NexusMan

Probably more like Google Plastic by Mattel.

  • Dan

I’m going to say “Nexusmaster”.. or would that be “Viewxus”?

    • WickedToby741

      View Master Google Play Edition

  • Please let it be a hover board like the one Marty will use on October the 21st this year

  • Viewmaster for sure. The top of the invite is a viewmaster disk.

  • CabbageHeadCat.

3d animated viewmasters. Would be great for pop up books.

  • Raven

A View Master styled 3D viewer for inserting a phone for 3D viewing like a plastic version of Google Cardboard.

    • Richard Gao

      That literally makes no sense.

      • Tyler Durden

Yeah, no updated Nexus 10 makes no sense.

        • Richard Gao

Please tell me you had this on your computer from before October 2014 and that you clicked it by accident.

          • Tyler Durden

            Where’s a new Nexus 10? Because last I saw… A Nexus 9 doesn’t have a 10 in it.

          • Richard Gao

this meme is extremely applicable here.

          • Tyler Durden

I’m guessing you’re talking about yourself. There’s no updated Nexus 10. The Nexus 9 is an HTC product, while the Nexus 10 is a Samsung product.

          • Richard Gao

They’re both large tablets that run stock Google software. What’s the freakin difference?

And even if you don’t think the Nexus 9 is an appropriate successor to the Nexus 10, what does this have to do with a Google and Mattel partnership?

          • Dan

what are you trying to say?

          • Tyler Durden

I want an updated Nexus 10 made by Samsung. Is it really that complicated? Those vaccines getting to you all?

          • Richard Gao

And what on earth does this have to do with this article?

            Oh, right. Absolutely nothing.

          • Tyler Durden

            It’s called a joke because it’s a Google event. Holy sh!t.

          • Richard Gao

Yeah…that was a really, really crappy joke. I usually think your comments are pretty funny but this one was just awful.

          • Tyler Durden

glad I’m not the only one waiting for a new Nexus 10. It’s all a part of the fun of being a fan of Google.

          • Richard Gao

      • How would it make sense figuratively?

  • Marcellus1

No idea what they might announce (of course), but it is interesting that this so closely follows the announcement that Google acquired Launchpad Toys (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-02-04/google-acquires-launchpad-toys-amid-push-into-kids-technology) and the announcement that Google and Disney are working together on Miles from Tomorrowland (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/cotown/la-et-ct-disney-junior-miles-of-tomorrowland-google-20150204-story.html). All of this on the heels of months of speculation about greater focus on kid usability of android (kid mode?). I wonder if some of this could be baked in the new android 5.1 update that we just heard about? Back to Mattel, I’m guessing whatever is announced for Mattel will be part of this much larger initiative. Also, could it be that the viewmaster tie-in relates to magic leap or cardboard?
