Google Play Newsstand – not to be confused with the newly revamped Google News and Weather – received an update this morning (or will soon) that brings in a touch of Material Design, along with a new magazine reading experience. As a refresher, Newsstand is the app that combined Play Magazines and Currents into what should be the ultimate news consuming experience. The app originally showed off all sorts of new design highlights from the Android design team, but this new update takes it to another level.

In this latest redesign, you will see Material Design at its finest. The transitions are buttery smooth, but also contain animations from panel to panel like the rippling effect that will be everywhere in Material Design. Imagery is bigger and more prominent, cards seem to float and create layers above other content, and touches almost feel as if they are doing more than just pressing a link. And by the way, I know all of this, because this redesign has been on iOS for weeks. Ugh.

Edit:  I lied. This isn’t even close to being as nice as the iOS version. There are no ripples. There are no Material Design card and floating animations. It just has new, smoother transitions and bigger imagery. Ugh x2.

The new magazine layout introduces a list of articles that you can easily toggle through, so your days of skimming through the full magazine to find something to read are over.

The rollout should happen over the next week.
