BLU Unveils Life Pure XL – 5.5″ 1080p Display, Snapdragon 800, 16MP Camera, Priced at $399

Life_Pure_XL 2

A new device from American-based BLU has been unveiled, the Life Pure XL. Unlike most other BLU devices, this one should certainly turn a few heads, as BLU has thrown a few specs into this new device to even make the hardcore Android enthusiasts happy.

For starters, the device features a 5.5″ 1080p display, Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, 16MP rear-facing shooter, 8MP front-facing shooter, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, Gorilla Glass 3, HSPA+ connectivity, and comes running Android 4.2 with a timely update promised to Android 4.4+. This might be BLU’s most spec-packed device, so it’s getting harder and harder to ignore these off-contract phones, especially when they are priced at just $399 off contract.

We have had hands-on with a couple of devices from BLU, but this might be the first one to actually get us somewhat excited. The only downsides we can see right off the bat are the capacitive buttons and the lack of 4G LTE connectivity. The buttons could be a personal preference, though.

Priced at $399 for the 32GB storage variant (with 3GB of RAM), would this device interest you? It is set to launch on Amazon tomorrow, May 2. A 16GB variant with only 2GB of RAM is set for release on May 9, priced at $349 in a wide variety of colors.

I’m good w/o 4G to be honest. I travel around a lot and 4G is not a world standard yet, plus most prepaid/contract free sim companies around the world don’t let you access those channels anyway, so it would just be a waste of battery for me.

  • master94

Opo might have met its match if there was lte since blu has a good name

  • Colts5609

Why would you release a phone with higher end specs and not include an LTE capable modem? It is understandable with the likes of the Moto G, because costs conly $99-199, and I don’t think anyone considers it a “premium” device. But there is no excuse to release a phone without LTE unless you are aiming at the low end market. In the high end/flagship market, not having LTE is like not having WIFI, it should absolutely be standard. It dramatically takes away from the appeal.

Capacitive buttons are not a downside.

  • bogy25

Wonder how thick it is? Hardly any bezel – bravo to them – but no LTE sorry no sale…..:(

  • http://starseedbobs.blogspot.com/ bobinh2otown@gmail.com

LTE Wouldnt make a difference to any of you .People spazzing out for a 150mbps feature that really cannot be seen or felt with any program from Netflix to Skype. You people have been duped into the delusion a much faster then needed data transfer . I would be worried about the no mention of extra memory by flash.
I find it so amusing reading these comments and like usual most of the time its all due to the Carriers and their manipulation technics used lure in customers with unneeded features… How much you going to download anyways with that 2 gig cap? WAKE UP! !!

    • Adrynalyne

      Poor Luddites.

    • Jim Davis

If you have AIO wireless, HSPA+ is capped at 4Mb/s while LTE is capped at 8Mb/s. Getting a phone with LTE also future-proofs it a bit. LTE is the future because it is more spectrum efficient and has much lower latency as compared to previous technology.

    • Colts5609

You may be the first person I have ever heard of that is complaining about LTE and how much faster it is. First off not everyone has a 2GB cap. There are still more than a few of us with unlimited data. Second, LTE doesn’t only benefit those power users who download from torrents all day. It actually benefits everyone. Do a Google search on 3G and the same search on LTE, you just might notice a difference. Download an app, mp3, or movie, you tell me the difference. Ill take my 20 Mbps connection over a 1.5 mbps 3G connection any day, especially for the same price.

      • http://starseedbobs.blogspot.com/ bobinh2otown@gmail.com

I call you bull give me the service provider that you have that offers unlimited. Very few if any providers allow the grandfather clause anymore and then at that 3g? what About hsdpa you really do not know what your talking about. Because hsdpa is just as fast as almost any home connection and as Ive said name one program that benefits from them speeds nothing remotely even in the HD 3D department which most phones do not even have its on high end TV’s home entertainment … Naa I will loose the lte any day and as I’ve said it makes no different.. I get 1round17mps on hsdpa and its never ever gonna be a bandwith issue.. have a good day!!

        • Colts5609

T-Mobile provides unlimited data, Sprint provides unlimited data, both for new and current subscribers. A lot of Verizon customers still have their unlimited data plans intact. HSPA isn’t bad, but not nearly as fast as LTE. I still don’t understand what you are complaining about. Faster is not better to you, its not like you pay more for it? You don’t seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed, so ill stop there.

  • jonzey231

They seriously put an S800 in this when OnePlus just released with theirs with the 801? Ha

    • shooter50

yeah, the difference is, this will be available to all. The one plus release is a complete joke. who knows when it will be available in quantity.

      • jonzey231

It’ll be available on qunatity in June.

  • AbdulBaqi1

looks more like Gionee Elife E7 for USA.

  • 213ninja

does it come with a detachable e-cig?

  • Brandon Yip

The hell is with all the 5.5″s

    • JimmyWangYangGang

5.5 is the new 4.3 lol. This looks like a long phone tho, a lot of blank space on the bottom, and physical buttons, this ones just weird.

  • John

What the hell…did you guys see the RAM on the specs photo there? 16gb internal storage supposedly has 2gb of ram and 32gb has 3gb of ram…I think that’s a typo.

    • John

Or maybe the ram amount is optional and they aren’t correlated to the internal storage…still wierd being able to pick the amount of ram you want.

  • UncleFan

“comes running Android 4.2 with a timely update promised to Android 4.4+…”

LOL – a timely update to 4.4 would be 6 months ago!

  • JimmyWangYangGang

Add LTE, give it on screen buttons, Ship if with 4.4, and give it the 801 chip and I hope this is what the G3 is spec wise. Actually, maybe curve the screen a little bit like the g flex but not as much.

  • TopXKiller

    Verizon, sigh :(

  • https://www.facebook.com/christopher.johnsc chris_johns

    moto x

  • Arthur Dent

    A friggin menu button? Seriously??

That and no LTE are deal-breakers. Beyond that, the rest of it looks fine.

  • William Oh

Man, this is a killer phone. Not sure if i’d pick it over say something like a Note 3, S5, or M7; but, the design language is pretty sexy. There’s a lot of screen real-estate with no wasted space, small bezels, off screen keys with no logo. Shame no LTE… make an amazing phone with top tier specs and no LTE. that’s sort of ridiculous

  • Dominick White

Oneplus still beats this by having 64gb for $350,Lte and having the 801 chip

    • Michael Johnson

And near 25% larger battery capacity, to boot…

    • p0k3y

      Chinese > American :)

    • master94

True but we don’t know yet about one plus ,some consumers might want to go with a more established budget brand like blu. That being said, really excited about the opo

      • Dominick White

That’s true but the no lte may make them change their minds or just go with a nexus 5 for the same price point with lte

  • hkklife

I’d like to have the option of a 64GB storage version with a beefier battery but this still looks pretty solid as-is. You know all of these sweet off-contract phones + T-Mo’s aggressive campaigns must have the big boys at least moderately nervous. I just wish that someone could beat the drum even louder to let the secret out that you don’t HAVE to get a new phone every two years, pay $700 full retail or enroll in a scam program like EDGE.

  • Giancarlo Waghelstein

Do they skin the OS heavily or does it run a stock/lightly skinned version?

    • eessel

      Stock lightly skinned.

  • skinja99

    So no LTE?
And if you have a bezel, you might as well have buttons on it. Doing so is better than having the buttons eating up screen area.

  • callumshell1

I personally have no preference when it comes to on-screen or capacitive buttons. They do the exact same job.

    • skinja99

Right, but most phones have a bottom bezel anyway. So it is better to have the buttons there, rather than eating up the screen real estate.
The only point to onscreen buttons would be if it made the screen bigger and got rid of the bottom bezel

    • calculatorwatch

As long as they’re back, home, and multitasking in exactly that order, I don’t care where they are. Not sure if that’s a menu button on this phone or a weird looking multitasking button, but either way they messed it up.

  • JimmyWangYangGang

8MP front facing camera? That’s insane. Wouldn’t be surprised if LG came out with an 8MP selfie cam now lol since they want to demolish the M8 and S5.

  • joseph barrientos

i think the LTE is gonna ruin the sale for a lot of people. and for those not in lte areas, enjoy the phone! let us know how it is

  • Robert Boluyt

No LTE, no sale for me. Sorry.

  • Michael

    4.2?

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

I’ve only really seen BLU when I leave the US…. I’ve never seen it sold anywhere in the US. Is it in actual stores anywhere?

    • http://droid-life.com/ Rthvk

Don’t think so. Funny, because they’re based in the US.

      • http://idle0095.com/ IDLE0095

Your kidding right. I can walk into 3 best buys in my area and get most Blu phones. I also sell these in both my retail locations in the US. My biggest threat is Best buy. I have to sell mine a little higher then them and I have people come in and say I can go to best buy right now and get this Blu phone for cheaper. I know they can. Best buy sells them in store.

    • http://idle0095.com/ IDLE0095

There sold in Best Buy in the US

  • benjaninja

Can I have all those specs, at that price, but with only a 4.7 inch screen please? And no bezels. At all. Thanks.

    • calculatorwatch

I’m just gonna say it, wait for the new Moto X.

      • benjaninja

I will. I love my Moto X. I also have a calculator watch btw. Pretty handy!

        • calculatorwatch

Oh good I was afraid you’d be a Moto X hater. And yeah they are pretty cool the battery died on mine a while ago.

  • flosserelli

Awesome specs for the price, except for faux G. But If I lived in a non-LTE area, I would definitely check this phone out.

  • http://idle0095.com/ IDLE0095

I sell every single Blu phone in both my retail locations. They sell like hot cakes. I buy $2600 a week in Blu phones from my dealer. This for sure will be a sweet device to buy.

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

      Where are you located?

      • http://idle0095.com/ IDLE0095

        NH

  • C Jacobs

It’s a nicely spec’d and nice looking device. But, no LTE, no sale!

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Wait…No LTE? how did I miss that? WTF?

    • abqnm

And no AWS band, so limited 4g on T-Mobile.

Pretty bad that this American company still can’t include a radio for the other major GSM carrier in the US. Maybe BLU is secretly owned by AT&T.

  • Bigsike

Um yea this is a shot across the bow.

  • silver_arrow

Also known as the Gionee Elife E7

  • Trevor

How do you release a higher-end smartphone sans LTE nowadays? That’s pretty crazy to me.

  • http://twitter.com/SParKlngCyaNide SparklingCyanide

Only vaguely familiar with this company, but those specs tho…..

    • paul_cus

      Spark!

  • lurk

    Not enough Bezel

  • Jorge Rhor

    Sold.

  • Cael

Now HTC One’s 5 MP front facing camera is irrelevant.

    • noneofthem

It was before that. The 13 MP camera of the Oppo N1 kicks everybody’s arse so far.

      • Cael

Aint nobody got time to be rotating when a simple button can be pressed.

        • Arthur Dent

“Hold on, let me rotate my camera so I can take a picture”

          Lol

    • Nugget

Yeah let me trade LTE for an extra 2MP on the selfie camera. Said nobody. Ever.

      • Cael

What good is LTE with your limited data?

        • Nugget

Well it’s faster, that’s the point, and I use 5+GB/ month currently. I can see you don’t want to have to go back to taking selfies in the gym mirror with your rear facing camera.

          • Cael

            1. The term Selfie is stupid.
            2. I could care less about the MP of a front facing camera.
My point is the HTC One M8 is _irrelevant_

  • lurk

    wat

  • paul_cus

    No.

  • Joseph De La Cruz

But how thick is it? o:
