Been Wondering Where the HTC Merge Went? Over to Alltel.

If you’ve been wondering what happened to the HTC Merge, we may have just found out.  After reportedly being shelved by Verizon, the device is now on its way to Alltel and if it passes some final tests, could be available in the next month or so.  It’s a little disappointing to think that this device may never see a Big Red logo, but at least now we know that someone will get to punch that beautiful keyboard.

To recap the the life of the Merge as we know it, how about some bullet points?

And to add to this news, we’ve also learned that Alltel will be getting the DROID X.  Testing has completed on the device and it should be available very soon.  Wonder if this will be the 1.2GHz version that went to China?  Probably not.  Gotta give up to Alltel though for upping the ante on their Android line.

Cheers Stephen!

Couldt you just activate it on verizon? I did this with my alltel hero

Verizon does not own Alltel, it only acquired the majority of Alltel. Also per wiki…The merger was approved by the FCC on the condition that Verizon divest 105 Alltel markets. AT&T acquired 79 of those markets. Atlantic Tele-Network acquired the remaining 26 divested Alltel markets, including licenses, network assets and 800,000 subscribers. These remaining markets continue to be operated by Allied Wireless, a subsidiary of ATN, under the Alltel name.

I’m also surprised to see big red pass this up. But I’m still with Alltel and I do not even want this phone. Let’s make a deal, you can have the Merge back but send us the Thunderstorm and Bionic. Oh yeah, you can keep the iPhone as well.

Seriously, I think most Alltel customers stick around because the prices and fees are so much less than with Verizon. But because the customer base is so small now, we have to wait a while for the latest devices. We currently have the Desire, which is a very nice Android, but I’m waiting for the Droid X to be offered along with this Merge or hopefully sooner.

    isn’t Alltel part of Verizon?

I tried to check the alltel site, but punching in every area code i know of in the south yielded an error message saying that they don’t offer service. I can’t even look at their current phone line up…
hopefully when it does come out, there would be a channel for the phone to be sold elsewhere like Best Buy or something…..

I really hope that someone just put Alltel wallpaper on an HTC Merge and I really hope that Verizon still releases this phone. However I’m worried that Droid Life is correct and that Verizon shelved the Merge because the form factor is very similar to the Droid 2 / Droid 2 Global.

I told my friend who’s on Verizon and wants to upgrade from an enV3 to a smartphone with a physical keyboard to wait for the HTC Merge because this keyboard looks so much better than the keyboard on the Droid 2 Global.

Umm you know Verizon owns Alltel right?

You’re one of the lucky ones to still be with Alltel. I wished my area was one of the markets divested. Alltel was the best.

    I like it

Meh. I was interested in the keyboard, not interested in Bing. Not too worried about seeing it go. Hopefully we good a nice Verizon DROID with a good keyboard soon.

Damn……that was going to be my next phone…….

Verizon, PLEASE bring this phone to your network! Have been waiting since last year for this phone because the keyboard looks so much better on this phone than the keyboard on the Motorola Droid (1 or 2). Have been waiting to upgrade my wife’s phone because she won’t go without the keyboard. VERIZON PLEASE BRING THIS PHONE TO YOUR NETWORK!!

Verizon and ATT didnt buy them all. They bought most of them but there are still some stores in Illinois, Indiana, and a few other places.

According to Wikipedia, post acquisition Alltel now serves 6 states; mostly in rural areas. Why in the world would they decide to bring an advanced device like this to a market that would most likely be better served by ruggedized phones such as the G’zOne Boulder, yet not bring it to VZW? I’m wondering if perhaps it WILL come to VZW eventually; perhaps with an LTE upgrade and a name change. Could be they will release it as part of the “Incredible” line. “Incredible Pro” perhaps?

    it is just a walpaper….

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dave-Russell/1265359834 Dave Russell

*LOL* It would be funny if you’re right. Could be someone just threw an Alltel wallpaper on an unbranded prototype Merge device to stir things up. There’s absolutely nothing else about the device that would point to it going to any specific carrier, except the red highlights which would point towards VZW if anything.

  • JoeLivesLife

These don’t match up. Alltel with this red hungry device? Seriously its like a pink iPhone. They don’t go together. I agree with others… it doesn’t add up but maybe it will go blue. Also, I am getting tired of all these cross-carrier devices. Don’t consumers want their devices to at least be exclusive? I mean I sure want my phone to have the exclusivity to Verizon. And if the X goes to Alltel, what will they call it? The Alltel Droid X. Starting to sound like the Verizon iPhone. lol

Honestly, I don’t think that the next phone I buy will have a physical keyboard. I was hesitant to go full touchscreen after the debacle I had with my LG Dare, only to find out that the keyboards are a lot better when you spend more than $50 on a phone.

  • Chris Nimon

I was checking out the Atrix on motos website and it says it will have a “full Firefox browser”. Does this mean more like on a computer or is it the same thing we have available now?

    • Evilkokonut

its a full firefox browser when docked as a laptop or desktop

I haven’t seen a Alltel store since i was forced to join VZW when they bought them out years ago.

lol seriously? it’s a phone company that Verizon bought out but there are still a few stores left

I actually want to know where the 5th row went! I honestly cannot figure out why HTC has failed to bring an Android device to market with the keyboard from the Touch Pro2. It was only reviewed to the best keyboard ever put on a phone. Honestly, it was amazing, and took almost no getting used to.

Ah man, if there was a phone I would upgrade to from my Droid2, this would have been it. Well VZW, no money for you until you get me a nice Android slider with a decent keyboard.

  • Anonymous

    guess who is pissed…ME
    i wanted this baby =[
any chance youd be able to buy this phone and activate it on verizon?

    • pj

I think there may be a possibility of that, depending on if you know a Verizon tech that wants to help. I was on Alltel with Alltel phones and Verizon bought them out in our area. The next month I get a bill from Verizon and nothing else changed. I kept my Alltel phone and upgraded one of the lines with a VZW phone. I’m guessing they use the same technologies.

alltels blue though! that can’t be right! lol

    dam! :(

  • Raven

Dang, kind of glad I gave up waiting for it a couple of weeks ago and went for a Droid 2 Global now.

  • Mr.Joe

I’m lost. What the hell happened to Alltel? Verizon bought them sold some of it off to AT&T. My state was one of Alltel biggest states. The towers either went to vzw or AT&T. How are they still around?

In some areas like around Hickory, NC Alltel was sold off to another company who is keeping the Alltel name

r u sure? like i want an alltel picture and branding and then ill be sure its not coming to big red.

  • Anonymous

Wasn’t going to get this phone anyway. Not with Bing on it.

  • heh

This is crap. I’ve been waiting for this too. I thought about Motorola Droid 2, but that keyboard is not very good. Looks like I’ll be hanging onto my Droid Incredible for the foreseeable future. Verizon Wireless are such assholes.

    • Anonymous

I used my upgrade figuring I could return my phone when this one came out. Man, is it me or has Verizon just been serving swift kicks to the groin since CES closed. upping data plans, upgrade cuts, now cancelling much anticipated phones, they are really feeling themselves.

    • Anonymous

Man, I was really, really looking forward to this on Big Red. :(

My question now is what happens to that alleged global radio it’s packing…

    • rage

I’ve also been waiting for this. Since late September 2010, actually. Pretty pissed to find out I waited all this time for nothing. Verizon gets the best coverage by far in my area and Alltel gets none here so this is equivalent to the Merge not being released at all if it’s true. I can’t stand the D2’s keyboard and the other rival networks get terrible reception here so I’ve been waiting for months for a *good* QWERTY keyboard phone on a *good* network and the Merge was going to be it…ugh. Now I guess my choices are between a crappy phone with Verizon or a good phone on a different network that I would get next to no reception with. Thanks Verizon! You may be at the top in terms of coverage but you’re clearly at rock bottom in terms of phones.

bullshit! been waiting for this phone so my wife can upgrade. QWERTY or bust!

Yeah, this is some BS! What, Verizon can’t have an Android phone with a decent keyboard?! Every other carrier can get a Desire Z variant, but not Verizon. Don’t want to make competition for the Droid 2 and its crappy keyboard. Totally pi$$es me off.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HMJYVCPSQMRY6XBYDJ3352736M Ramien

really wanted this phone over the Droid2, waiting for a decent keyboard for android. I thought this would be it. Gotta hold on to my Touch Pro2 a little longer. Hopefully something better will come out.

    • Knightcrusader

Yeah, the Touch Pro 2 has the best smartphone keyboard, hands down. If only the xdandroid port worked 100%…
