Google has begun pushing out its new Noto 3D emoji across Google and Android products, so they celebrated the moment with a fun little write-up on several of the decisions that were made in order to create these new little characters that we all use so often on phones.
It’s a fun read from the Google Design team if that’s your thing, as it dives into decisions over the pace and tools used for creation, reasons for changing some emoji from a head to a full-body, and how they fixed problems with dark modes.

What caught our eye was the discussion around the fact that a 3D emoji design probably needs to take into account its full 360-degree body. If something is 3D, doesn’t it have all of the dimensions, not just what sits before you? Maybe.
And with that in mind, Google’s design team took the idea of a 360-degree view of an emoji to do what we would all do – answer the question of whether or not an emoji has a butt?
