Only a Few More Days for That December Update, Pixel 6 Owners (Updated)

Pixel 6 Pro Review

Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro owners likely weren’t happy to see that this month’s Android update for their phones wouldn’t arrive alongside the other Pixel phones. A week delay, even if only a week, is never a fun thing, especially if you just bought your new high-end phone with the promise of updates-before-everyone-else. Don’t worry, Pixel 6 friends, you only have a few more days to go before all of your bugs are fixed.

Google already told us earlier in the week that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro wouldn’t get the December patch until “next week.” They didn’t specify which day next week, but it seemed obvious that it would be on Monday, since that’s Google’s favorite day to push updates.

According to a post on the Japanese Pixel Support forum, a Googler said that December 13 would indeed be the day that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro would see their updates. That post has since removed that note, but we captured it and you can view it at the cached version of the post here.

Pixel 6 December Update

Mad about the delay and are under the assumption that Google never does this? Haha…no. Google did the same thing with the Pixel 4 line right after it was released. While we wish they would be more open in communicating why there are these weird delays, it’s a thing that happens. When we see these delays, they often roll this way for a month or two at launch and then settle into being on time going forward.

Once Monday rolls around and that update shows up, prepare for a big one. Not only is this a Pixel Feature Drop month, the list of bugs that Google is fixing here is pretty intense. There are dozens and dozens of fixes, many of which are targeted at the Pixel 6 line. Once this update blesses your device, it might run like a brand new phone again.

Monday is coming.

  • UPDATE 12/13 10:20AM: Well, today was supposed to be the day, but Google has not yet posted builds for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Maybe that December 13 date was wrong and that’s why it was removed. If we do get updates, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Just trying to get people stirred up. I don’t recall in my ToS a date for updates. Used to provide good info now just clickbait. This site won’t be missed.

Got my 6 yesterday, it immediately updated to Android 12, November security update. Is that what I should get? No December security yet? Not knowing what the bugs have been it’s a bit hard to know what’s up. Fingerprint seems to be iffy.

I saw an original reference on one of Google’s support pages (non – Japanese source than what you referenced) on December 6 which indicated “later this month” for the Pixel 6 line: I really wasn’t expecting anything today.

Where the hell is this update?

To be fair, they never officially promised today. And that support comment WAS removed (probably because the support rep was misinformed). Looks like the new company line is “later is month” (https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/139017133/google-pixel-update-december-2021?hl=en)

Honestly, as long as the december update comes in december, I’m good

If it fixes all the glitches it will be worth the wait…doubt that will be the case though.

I’d rather wait a few more days then get a buggy release.
People tend to rush OEMs and then complain about issues. lol

Update arrives the same day as my Pixel 6. Nice.

I was more disappointed they didn’t add face unlock. Will keep waiting and hope this update at least fixes the many issues I’ve had with the P6P.

If they’re not bringing back trusted wifi networks for smart lock due to “security reasons” then they’re not going to allow face unlock from an insecure camera sensor. It’s the same reason why google doesn’t use voice-matching to unlock the phone. It’s too easy to bypass.

Then why would they allow people the option of having no screen lock?

If you don’t have screen lock, then you can’t use GPay. You lose functionality by avoiding a secure login method.

2D Face wouldn’t be used for sensitive stuff like bank apps anyways, and many would be fine having it for unlocking. It’s nice to have options.

I agree – but I’m just acknowledging that google is at least being consistent here.

I’m mostly excited about the camera improvements

Is it weird that I don’t want to take any more pictures until I get this update?

The delay is just because the Pixel 6/Pro are brand new, and have more bugs to fix and validation to do than the other phones require. I don’t see it as unreasonable. Once they’re more than a few months old, if updates continue to be delayed, then I’d be more annoyed

Quite possible. Maybe they needed time to get some extra bugs to squash instead of waiting for January.

So you’re saying the Pixel 6/6 Pro on Verizon have more bugs to fix than non-Verizon Pixel 6/6 Pro devices? Other sites are reporting that non-Verizon Pixel 6/6 Pro devices got the December update last week.

      1. Ryan Reid Avatar
        Ryan Reid

Well those sites are incorrect, no Pixel 6/6 Pro devices got the update prior to today

As far as the December Security Update. I have only received it on my Pixel 4 XL. None of my other Pixels have received it. 3XL might finally be out of security updates; I don’t remember. I haven’t received it on my Pixel 5 either.

What happened to .037? I’m still on .036. UK, 6Pro.

It could be carrier related. I just got my P6 two days ago and it came with .036 and was not finding the update either with my VZW sim. I put in an un activated FI sim that came with the phone and it immediately found the update then.

Ask them when they are going to fix the bug where Unlocked Pixel 6 or 6 pro’s bought from Google and used on Verizon’s network will start to get any updates. I haven’t gotten one yet. I’ve contact both and both point the finger at the other for the issue.

I’ve read 2 solutions but haven’t tried either as I have the vzw branded p6 pro. Setup phone with no sim card or manually sideload the latest update. I would think wiping your phone would be more trouble than just pushing the update manually.

      1. Swauger Avatar
        Swauger

I tried the no sim card thing and it didn’t work. I removed the sim, factory reset the device and set it up connected just to wifi. Let it sit for over 24 hours and tried over and over to pull the update and nothing. I refuse to sideload software onto a phone that cost $1,000.

I had P6 on Verizon. It would not update. I have been testing Google Fi on a phone for my mother. I put the Fi sim in my P6 and it immediately got the update. Google support was giving me the run around.

To get the first update when it was originally released I had to borrow a friends T-mobile sim. Same thing. Once I put it in and restarted the phone it immediately pulled the update.

I’d be betting on Verizon being the delay, tends to be the networks cause the delay here in Australia, maybe the same in the USA?
