OnePlus has a smart TV on the mind.

Now that OnePlush has established itself as an important player in the smartphone industry, they are setting sights on another category of tech: TVs. OnePlus announced over the weekend that they are going to make a OnePlus TV that fits into the smart TV category.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau will lead this new division, where they’ll attempt to balance “high-quality hardware with the latest in technology, developing a seamless user experience, and crafting hardware that is minimalistic and timeliness in design.” Lau wants to make it easier for you to share photos from your phone to your TV. Apparently, he doesn’t know about Google Cast?

All jokes aside, OnePlus says they are only taking the initial steps to create a smart TV, so it could be some time before they ever release a product you can buy. This early of a tease is a bit odd, if I’m being honest. I’m also not sure I see a big need for another TV maker that makes good-enough products with really good prices and includes some form of a smart UI. There are dozens of those already in the TV market.

That opinion aside, OnePlus wants your help in naming this new TV. You can offer up suggestions in their forums where you’ll have a chance to win fabulous prizes should your suggested name be chosen. You can enter here.

UPDATE: Pete Lau spoke with PCMag and revealed more details about their upcoming TV.

The TV will be a 4K LED TV and it’ll run someone else’s OS. OnePlus isn’t creating its own TV OS, so don’t be surprised if it’s Android TV. Lau wouldn’t say who the partner is, but who else is OnePlus going to use? Either way, the TV could have far-field microphones and act more like a smart speaker assistant than a TV. The goal is to create a TV that is “clean, efficient, and smart.”

The TV will arrive next year.
