  • I’m not impressed with the speed test shown.  I had expected to see 14+Mbps at 4G.  Looks good but is is worth $299.  I don’t see the value.

  • I don’t understand the design philosophy behind that lock screen. It looks so.. off to the left. The unlock icon is tucked all the way to the left. It doesn’t help that the digital clock and date are left-aligned as well.

Meanwhile, the ringer/sound icon is 40% smaller (why?) and floating off center to the right. The best excuse of this aesthetically unappealing layout that I can think of is ergonomics, where they try to not push the icons too far to the right edge in hopes to make it easier for a right-handed person to swipe the icons from left to right using their thumb.

But in doing so, they have killed a rather sleek looking interface. Yes, form should follow function, but they could’ve certainly made it cleaner and more pleasing to the eye. Well, a designer’s eye, that is.

  • I must show appreciation to this writer just for bailing me out of this particular issue. Right after exploring throughout the world wide web and meeting tricks that were not helpful, I was thinking my life was well over. Being alive minus the approaches to the problems you’ve resolved through the article is a crucial case, and ones which could have in a wrong way damaged my entire career if I had not noticed the website. Your actual mastery and kindness in playing with all the pieces was precious. I am not sure what I would have done if I had not encountered such a solution like this. It’s possible to now relish my future. Thanks very much for your professional and result oriented guide. I won’t think twice to refer your web sites to any person who should get direction on this matter.

  • What’s up with the bootloader on this phone?  Locked, encrypted, unlockable, etc?  This is my main concern if I’m going to get the phone or not.

  • If this phone has any kind of home screen redraw issues, I will be very very disappointed, especially since it has 1 GB of RAM. Might very well be a deal breaker.

  • I gotta say, it does start up pretty fast and the new blur does look nice.

But if I know blurr, it will be laggy for no reason, and it will still redraw after you do anything.

    Nexus Prime or GTFO

  • Holy hell thats alot of bloatware. Oh how i wish they put blockbuster on this badboy ;).

  • Holy hell thats alot of bloatware hopefully someone roots this phone one day to get rid of that crap.

  • Blur is still awful.  Cyanogen is where it’s at!
If moto wants to continue to lock bootloaders for absolutely no reason at all, they will fall behind.  If this were unlocked, I would be there on launch day, cash in pocket, ready to buy one, no questions asked.  But I WILL NOT purchase anything that does not encompass the open, free spirit that has allowed Android to thrive.  I bought a Xoom, because it’s unlocked.  It’s just that simple.

    • Cyanogen is overrated, I wasn’t impressed with it other than the theme engine integration.

  • Liking the new Blur so I will root it, remove blot/crapware , then enjoy the damn thing.

    • May take awhile to root since the d3 still hasnt been rooted and they are basically the same phone internal wise.

  • all the hype around this phone for so long has made me not care any more, not even in the slightest.

    • So then considering the GS 2 has been hyped since February and the Prime is going full force with no real specs yet, guess you will be waiting for quite some time for a new phone.

  • I need this device. Seeing the red eye made me remember how I loved watching the boot animation when I bought my D1 in Nov 2009.

    • I’m with you on that brother. I know everyone is excited for the Nexus Prime, but I think Moto has the best hardware than sammy and HTC. I’m rare breed that is excited for this phone.

    • I’m with you on that brother. I know everyone is excited for the Nexus Prime, but I think Moto has the best hardware than sammy and HTC. I’m rare breed that is excited for this phone.

  • I for one am impressed with the speed of Blur and the animations. I think the display will be a deal breaker when I see this in person though. We’ll see…

  • Idk why many of you are talking about this redraw and delay, maybe its because I currently have an env3 and cant wait to get my hands on this but everything I saw in the video was fine. If you guys are honestly going to complain about millisecond delays and start up times on this phone than you are just desperate to find something wrong with it. And why the hell would you be complaining about the start up time anyway, how often do you honestly turn on your phone? and even if you are constantly turning it off for some reason do you really need to use it 5 seconds after you hit the power button??

  • Motorola is an American company. If imports get banned it doesn’t affect us being as we live here

  • I just ran the same speed test on my OG Droid…in VERMONT LOL!!!! Not getting there from here! LOL

  • Like the boot animation. Question, what’s up with Verizon and their marketing/advertising department, this should be everywhere over commercials, billboards, etc., this should be up everywhere but I bet the average consumer has no idea about this device.

    • Verizon and Motorola are the worst for marketing. I totally agree with you on this. if it wasn’t for us Droid users, a lot of people wouldn’t know anything about their products until long after they are released. They need a whole new Marketing director.

      • They had a great marketing with the Droid X and that’s about it. They had that scavenger hunt which was fun too.

    • I dont know too much about marketing and stuff but It seems to be that when there are huge releases there is way less advertising for it than you would expect. Take the movie Avatar for example, the biggest box office movie of all time and they didnt spend a lick of advertising on it until week before its release

    • The iHype happened, Verizon is all up in crApple’s ass.  Their Droid brand plays second fiddle now, they made one average commercial for the Charge which I’ve only seen a handful of times and basically ignored the X2 and Droid 3 altogether.

  • This phone was awesome 6 months ago. Now it is just good. The only thing this phone offers that is unique is LTE and dual core in the same phone.

And a big drawback may be that pentile screen. I need to see a bionic screen in person since it is supposed to be better than the DX2.

  • “One thing I noticed though, is the speed at which this tipster was able to grab an icon and bounce it between screens.  The DROID3 can accomplish a similar task, but that 1GB of RAM in the Bionic appears to make those transitions so much smoother.”

Nope. Please learn how Android manages memory resources before posting misinformation like this. If it’s faster then the software has been changed to allow faster page transitions.

  • Nobody panic, this is out of the box video. Configurations still need to be done. For the most part it ROCKS. The new Blur is polished.

  • I am excited to finally use my upgrade. Hopefully sooner, rather than later.

Speaking of which… why the hell don’t we have a release date for this thing yet? Something seems a bit strange about that. No heavy marketing ahead of the launch? No tacky Motorola teaser commercials with an astronaut circling the sun as a bionic arm wields itself from beneath his suit, thereby making him able to save himself, his crew, and his business from surefire annihilation?

    Something is definitely off…

  • No one KNOWS if it’s gonna have redraw problems with the stock launcher… it looked pretty fast to me except RIGHT after it booted up, most phones will have this problem. Anyone agree???

    • Agree, you got to give the phone a little time to finish it’s boot, this guy just rushed into it. Phone responded though 🙂

      • All I’m saying is, pick up the phone and use it before knowing whether or not its going to have redraw. The droid 3 has redraw because the ram cant handle blur -probably- AND the redraw problems are probably nothing compared to my OG

  • It will probably get delayed again since now Microsoft is trying to ban imports of moto phones.

  • +1 on that bitchn’ blur! Especially like the collapsible “fav contacts” widget.
I thought the GB blur was a nice improvement but this 3D business is tits!
…can I say tits on here? Haha

  • Here’s what you will all experience with the “new blur”.  There will be a delay going back to the homescreen.  And there will be homescreen redraws.  They will not last long however because the 4430 is speedy as hell, but they will be there.  Task switching takes WAY to long.  Instead of it bringing up the last 8 used like every other phone, it will bring up the app drawer, except it will be grouped as “recently used” instead of all your apps.  And the animation it will take to get there adds more time waiting for the phone to fumble around.

The home launcher for blur will weigh about 40mb.  Way too bloated.  There will be countless amounts of crapware, but worse, the crapware will auto load itself into your RAM, further hurting the performance.

You will spend many days actually really liking the home launcher.  It’s very pretty.  But in the end, you will throw your favorite 3rd party launcher on, and the performance increase you will see will be so dramatic that you will not be able to help but to keep the 3rd party launcher on.  Only, the quick contacts widget that you fell in love with on the blur launcher will not work with your 3rd party launcher.  You will search endlessly on the market for something similar, only to come up empty handed.

Every once in a while you will uninstall the 3rd party launcher and go back to stock, just because the stock launcher is so slick, and that quick contacts widget is so slick that you want to show it off.  But you will miss the lightning performance of the 3rd party launcher, and you will grow tired of back-to-the-homescreen lag/redraws, and eventually come back to it.

Yes my sons and daughters, these are the days that lie ahead for you…

      • I like LP as much as the next guy, but we haven’t seen an update in like a year.  Carnales is too busy with that music app.  Plus, the quick contacts widget is coded into blur somehow, I don’t think it can come loose, but I hope!

        • He is also working on the rewrite. I hope ISC doesn’t bring something so dramatic that it totally ruins his work. I also hope ICS kicks the shit out of Gingerbread.

        • you have to consider that the bionic is packing 1 g of ram, let and a lot of space. The new task manager integrate it in the droidx2, droid3 and bionic can help with the loading issue

    • DAMMMM what a bUZZZ kill!!!! OR we get “spare part” from the market and speed up the transitions and configure the Task manger app to peak performance like you would a PC and LOVE the Launcher man….

    • If your talking about home launchers use pandahome. I know it’s not LPP but you can skin all of your apps of the bloatware you dont want to look at or hid it like on my Droid3. And there will be bloatware but damn did you have to go all Edgar Allen Poe on it?

    • This is so true at least with the droid 3 that I own. Lets hope that extra ram really make that much of a difference and the crap ware loads it down. Great comment!

    • Holding the home button is supposed to bring up the last apps used, only difference is that it’s via Moto’s app drawer instead of the default android hovering list of 8 but it’s still the last used apps.  Not sure what the problem is unless it’s strictly because of what you consider to be lag getting there.  You can disable those fancy animations that take up time, you know that right?  Settings > Display > Animation

The new blur launcher performance wasn’t any slower than LP when I played with a D3 either, in fact it was smoother; I did notice the redraws though and a slight delay when opening the app list but then the Bionic also has twice the ram.

    • I have a question, when using a 3rd party launcher does it take the stock launcher out of memory completely?

  • After that initial slowness, it didn’t seem to have any of the redraw problems like the Droid 3.  When it finally drops, you should do a side-to-side comparison of the speed.

  • I really like that version of MotoBlur. I wish i could get that on my Droid X2. I love stock, but it would neat to at least try that version of Blur.

  • My Thunderbolt results (PING 75ms, DOWNLOAD 6872kbps, UPLOAD 4228kbps)…
I think I’ll keep my TB

  • and by by torn you mean what the sales person would have to do to get my money out of my wallet for this?

    /s

    • i wish there was a setting where you could turn blur on or off that would be awesome!

  • I had 15M down/5M up on TBolt and Charge… I’ll flush this thing if that’s the best it can do.  Speed Test of 3G is not useful or interesting.

  • 43 seconds to start up and finish loading the SD card not including the time before the video where it had already been initiated to start up.

Still not impressed with this phone. I’ll wait to try it at the store.

    • Thats what happens when you release a phone every 3 months under the same operating system.  The technology can only go so far.  If I were a major player in Android, I would release maybe 2 high end phones per year and 2 low end with no variations in design based on carriers.  Its impossible to ever achieve in type of scale when you have so many different products, with different names.  It gets confusing for the end user.

Kudos to Samsung, for getting it right with the Galaxy S line and their marketing, sales strategies around it.

      • The choice is one of the reasons that Android is so much better than that fruity brand that limits you to “maybe 2 high end phones per year”. Actually it might be “2 low end phones per year”.

        • Android is becoming fragmented though and they are releasing too many junky phones instead of releasing fewer quality phones. They need to spend a little more time on phones so they are not half baked at release.

          • .becoming? It already is and this is why everyone is excited for ics because it will start the end of fragmentation on android as we know it

          • I wouldn’t call the Atrix, Photon, Sensation, Galaxy S II or Bionic half baked.  Nor would I call the Nexus Prime, Vigor or Droid HD half baked if the rumors are remotely true.

    • The evo 3D takes like 10 seconds from off to the lockscreen and there is never any homescreen lag!!!

      • That’s not a cold boot, that’s HTC’s hot boot that keeps everything in memory and doesn’t shut down completely.  It’s like hibernate in Windows.

    • This video killed it – the startup time, lag and redraw. Forgot to mention the bloatware, 17 apps shoved into memory without any choice for the owner:

  • Looks pretty good, thought if I had an upgrade available I would probably wait until the end of September to decide what to buy.

  • And the peeps didn’t believe me when I said the new Blur would be in 3D.  Yet they kept saying “no, its the same as the DROID 3”  actually, you tell me, is it on the DROID 3? I don’t know lol

  • Hey DROID Bionic, you’re nice with that boot animation and all, and I’ma let you finish but the NEXUS PRIME IS THE BEST UPCOMING PHONE OF ALL TIME!!!

    • What cracks me up is how people on this site like you can jump from one bandwagon to the next…comments like that were being posted about the SGSII….

      • You should reread my comments (I know, there’s a lot) but I have been a staunch defender of the Bionic for a long time and RAILED against vaporware phones. I have hated on the GSII and its WVGA, non exynos US edition for a long long time, along with the HTC Vigor that, if exists won’t last 2 hours on battery. The Nexus is starting to drip, and I have my sources as do other people and I have reasons to start being excited about it. You better believe Moto is lobbying VZ hard to not take it.

        • The bionic will do just fine 🙂 the new upcoming devices are just rumors bad battery life, toy build quality etc

      • Yeah I totally agree` the pathetic Tarsis Brito took bantering to a racist level. We reallly dont need any of that BS on this site. Check out the threads of me go back and forth with this creep. He needs to be banned offf this site.

“rals hates black people.” I know your joking but c’mon man Not cool!!!!!

        • Who hates black people or mexican stupid mojado i was referring to you not the whole community. You are hating gay people and hispanic people what do you think that they dont read your comments. You are just a little girl that got mad because i told you that you phone its not as good as the droid 3 , which is true. Now go cry to your momma and bring me my food already dammmm it

    • I got an iPad 2- (32GB) for $ 23.87 and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $ 38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $ 657 which only cost me $ 62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, http://x.co/ZE7O

    • Nexus might be the best for the people that loves plain skin, not for the ones that love sense and the new blur.

    • I just p a i d $21.87 for an i P a d 2-64GB and my boyfriend loves his Panasonîc Lumîx GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS.I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. • Looks about the same speed as my Droid 3….
Still looks good, but I wouldn’t sell my D3 for it, as they are much in common.

  • Ill say I am very impressed. I know lots of friends with x’s and d1’s and d2’s. This new blur looks pretty damned sweet. Even more sweet than my blunderbolt’s sense 2.0. I have been waiting for something to give me a reason to spend 600 on another new phone. Well… this was it!!

      • It doesn’t matter, they were waiting to make that comment anyway because of the qHD display and have already determined that it must be a bad display because it isn’t a Super Duper AMOLED HD Prime XL Plus 2 Pro display from Samsung.
