  • Instead of worrying about making batteries charge insanely fast we need batteries that actually last LONGER to begin with. So sick of companies trying to make the slimmest phone yet screens and overall sizes get bigger and bigger. Dumbest thing ever. I’d rather have a phone twice as thick if it meant twice the battery life. Battery tech hasn’t improved much in the last few years at all. Why are companies scared to death to put a BIG battery in a phone and make it thicker. Assuming the rest of the phone was good I bet it would sell like crazy.

  • So the Note20 will have it then? I know many will worry about battery longevity and likely for good reason, but I rarely keep a phone for a full year so, likely to only be a benefit to me.

Though with this, I could now see WC becoming a moot point and I’m a huge fan of WC.

    • I would rather have a phone with a massive battery, hopefully graphene soon, that lasts about 3 days. That would be better than having to take this charger everywhere I go. It seems we have gone quiet on wanting bigger batteries. the New Moto Edge phone has great battery life and shows if the OEM wants they can make it. But I fear its more profitable for a smaller battery and selling OEM chargers.

      • Yea, battery tech is definetely lagging behind for sure. I’m a bit torn, I used to prioritize battery life for a phone, but don’t as much anymore because now, in both my car’s, where I place my phone to store it while driving it’s charging. No plugin needed, so even on my busiest days I’ll often end the day with 80% plus because it’s been topping up throughout the day. And I like thin phones, but I think it’s more the specific design, like with my Note10+ I love that it’s thin and wide, I also liked that about the Pixel 3XL, then with the Pixel 4XL it’s literally like only 1-2mm thicker, 1-2mm narrower and I HATE the in hand feel with even that little of a difference.

On the other hand, when I go on vacations and we go sight seeing or to the beach all day etc, I need that long lasting battery mainly due to camera usage during those times and would love to be able to go camping for a weekend without taking a charger.

We have a ways to go it seems.

  • Too bad these chargers aren’t coming in the box hope y’all are ready to cough up $70 per charger for this tech…

  • whew that charging block is gonna be huge but i’m loving the backwards compatibility.

  • I would be excited about this but with OEMs slow adoption for Quick Charge 3 and 4…can’t imagine that’s going to change now.

  • Call me old fashioned if you want, but I turn off the rapid rate charging on my phones when I get them. I don’t burn through a battery in a day so I have plenty of time to slow charge the batteries. And I also hope that this doesn’t lead to smaller batteries, just because you can charge a battery in a short time doesn’t always mean that you will be able to.

      • typically under the battery options. for samsung its device care -> battery -> charging.

        • Nice, maybe Google will adopt at some point with their Pixels.

Does Samsung have this option configurable (i.e. daytime leave on and nighttime to disable)?

          • Google uses Power delivery USB C. Which is capable of 100w charging just not implemented on pixel ????‍♂️

          • Yup I know of PD, but was commenting on the ability to turn on and off too. Nice to have more options.

Let’s just hope faster charging doesn’t mean smaller batteries too.

          • Fast vs slow charing isn’t what hurts a battery. Letting it drain below 20(ish) percent and charing it over 80(ish) is what degrades it fast. Get in the habit of always throwing your phone on the charger when it’s around 20-25% and never let it charge over 80-85% and you’d be surprised how long the battery health/life is maintained

          • Hmmm… good question, I think NO by default, BUT I think Good Lock (Samsung developed customization suite of programs) will cover that via “Routines” applet. Let me check; hang on.

          • It doesn’t have a scheduler, sadly, and neither does Routines through Good Lock. Automate/Tasker MIGHT have access to those, but I suspect they are root access. I can’t confirm that currently though as I uninstalled them in favor of Sammy’s “Routines” (lighter on battery usage, but less powerful/robust).

          • OH! I should mention this is a Note 8, so newer models MAY have this capability.

  • I think this is the breaking point in charging tech, where we might finally cease the complaints on overall battery life. What’s funny to think about is that you might need a dedicated circuit breaker for charging devices (like if you and your spouse are charging overnight).

    What’s the spec of the 100W ? like 5a 20V or 10a 10v or 4a 25V?

    • 100W isn’t a lot though? I mean my laptop has a 130W charger. And then my dock is 180W (19.5V 9.23A)

      • 9 amps is a lot considering most circuit breakers are 15 amps (or 20) for the non high load circuits. I work from home and make sure all my work equipment (dock, PC, printer, monitor, etc.) is on a circuit by itself.

  • Next year should be good.. I’ll hold out on upgrading.. all these phones still look the same to me, I want newer tech

    • Then there may be QC 5.0+ or 6.0 and WIFI 7.0 introduced! :).

I try to get new tech when needed or get a good trade-in value….usually the trade-in wins lol.

      • If they can legitimately deliver the charging times indicated, any improvement beyond that is going to be marginal and not worth waiting for. 0 to 100% in 15 minutes? I ain’t delaying a purchase to hold out for 12…

  • Can’t wait for Samsung to add this to their phones in the year Two-Thousand and Never. Limited their phones to QC 2.0 long after better charging tech had been released.

    • damn i thought backwards compatibility meant it would work automatically. if samsung has to update the software of older phones to take advantage of QC 5.0 then i have as much hope as you do.
