LG G5 Unboxing!

lg g5 unboxing

So, we have another LG G5 in house. Excited? Confused? I say “another,” because we have had a pink, non-retail unit around these parts for a good couple of weeks now that we were really only able to toy and tease our inner tester-selves with. But with this new arrival, we have a retail unit to finally do some dirty work to. That’s slick talk for, “We can finally test things!” You know, like the camera, battery life, performance, etc. That’s pretty exciting.

To kick off this official testing period as we lead up to a full review, we thought we’d celebrate with an unboxing, since the last time around we did a non-unboxing of sorts. Oh, and if you missed it, we did a pretty good comparison of the G5 to the Galaxy S7 and shared with you our 7 favorite G5 features. See, we’ve had the G5 around for a while now.

OK, enough rambling, here’s the unboxing before the review!

  • I have just ordred the LG G Vista 4G : http://amzn.to/1qlrqSz
    for $134.91 with free shipping..

  • SE = Special Edition?

  • Mike

Hey man, I know you just got the unit, but any idea how long you’re going to play with it before the review? Just curious. Thanks!

  • disastrousrainbow

So just like what happened with the Nexus 6P, the more of the G5 that I’ve seen, the more it’s design has grown on me. I still think the back of the phone could’ve used a bit more branding (like the Nexus name on the back of the 6P) so as to not look so weirdly barren, but overall I’m digging it.

  • MattBoan

I’m excited to see Droid Life’s full review of the G5. I was starting to get worried/think that LG had some ridiculous embargo on reviews. Granted, I just started rocking a Nexus 6 after my G3 bit the dust a few weeks ago, but I still need to know!

  • Dominic D

I like the front of the device but the back is just plain UGLY

    • Markelous

Its not bad at all. Kinda reminds me of bender. And bender is awesome.

  • MadJoe

Ugh, after seeing the way Samsung screwed up multitasking with the SD820 variants of the S7 and S7 Edge, I’m seriously considering LG again. If the US version of the Note 6 is just as big of a hot mess, whatever LG is doing come September is going to be mighty interesting to me.

    • Bane

How did they screw up multitasking? It’s MUCH better than it was on the Note 5/GS6. No, it still doesn’t keep as many apps in the background as it should with 4GB of RAM, but it keeps enough now to actually be usable. I was one of the biggest complainers of how the GS6 and Note 5 performed and I have no issues with the GS7.

      • Rod

Compared to the S7 Exynos, the S7 Snapdragon seems to have 2gb RAM or less.

      • MadJoe

It immediately shuts down games, and some other apps. My Note 5 doesn’t do that, my S6 does. There’s multiple YouTube videos showing it, one even showing the Exynos side by side and it doesn’t do it.

  • jtwildman1

What looks odd to me, is the camera…with the back view it looks like a huge hump, but when turned to the side it looks very minimal. I haven’t used LG so I won’t comment on their skin, but everything else is there really…it is what we all should expect from a 2016 device..removable battery, sd card slot, finger print scanner, IR blaster (yes powering your TV and changing channels shouldn’t be a unexpected thing), good display, decent camera, and premium build. Give credit to LG for hitting all the marks.

    • Except water resistance. And still wondering on screen brightness and audio volume which have been questioned in a pre-review on another site.

Several have also said the metal shell is skimpier than Sammie’s or Apple’s as well. But still leaning toward it, pending answers.

  • Adil Tajgeer

is that one of the stock wallpapers? i want that wallpaper…

  • n11

Please do a thorough camera (photo/video) test. Want to see the qualities : ) Thanks

  • capncoad

I dunno I think “dirty work” might be slick talk for something else. You know what i’m saying? you know what i’m saying? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUQrq07NQeM

  • Adventry App

If you step back and take a holistic look, I think any reasonable person would say Android is innovating at a pretty fast pace and getting it to users. http://adventryapp.com/

    • Less than 5% of the base is on Marshmallow even with N looming, so that’s kinda questionable. I’m also hearing LG doesn’t have a great track record on updating. What can anyone tell me on that score…?? I need a new phone like kind of now … and this is the most appealing overall this year so far…. …but never having had an LG I have questions.

      • Slainte Threeseventeen

I have a G3 and have Marshmallow (from Verizon)…actually, they just did another marshmallow OTA (46a to 47a) in the past week.

        • Mike

Yeah, if that keeps up, I for sure would make the G5 my next phone.

  • NorCalGuy

How long does the boot up take when swapping out the modules?

  • HollowLog

I know that UI overview video showed the ability to enable the app drawer, but it’s not there. Maybe in a future update or something, but it’s not there yet.

  • enigmaco

    Ir blaster woohoo!

  • Rod
  • Mike

    Buff it out…

  • yummy

I swear, that looks just like a phone.

  • Scott Ricketts

    Mine arrives tomorrow. Contemplating PTO.

  • kevg73

    peenk

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Kellen I like the new video edits… But you guys need an intro clip.

  • Eric

Looking forward to seeing what the price is for the unlocked model.

    • Xavier_NYC

Check out B&H.. They typically sell the unlocked model for around the same price as the carrier variant give or take $15-$20

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

    ?

  • Supraman21

LG has turned into HTC for me. I just don’t care anymore.

    • callumshell1

      cool

  • Tyler Durden

Seems like a really meh box and design. LG could use a little better design for some things.

    • Scott Ricketts

Does the box design matter to you?

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Design matters bro. But it’s all subjective.

        • Scott Ricketts

Hey, if a sexy box floats your boat, more power to you.

    • TeeJay1100

I’m not impressed with any of it actually. Easy pass.

    • TriguyRN

Not much you can do with a box and it doesn’t matter, like at all but, I have seen better boxes in my day.

  • moew

Kellen said you can hot swap the battery…

I thought the phone died when you pulled the battery out. Hot swap would imply that the phone stays on during the swap process. I guess the Stratham (sp?) video was correct since Kellen said here that you can HOT SWAP.

    Now that’s a cool thing!

    • The Doctor

The phone does not stay on when you pull the battery out.

      • Scott Ricketts

Now *THAT* would be a magic slot.

        • moew

It would be like mashed potatoes, and I would 2 Live Crew it!

      • moew

Kellen said it was hot swappable in the video, perhaps you missed that.

        • Michael Chediak

I believe Kellen misspoke…I messed around with one at the store and the phone shuts off when you pull the battery.

          • moew

see my other note below or above depending on your settings.

I believe that you are correct, but I’ll wait for the video and the correction. #HOTSWAP #IWONDERWHATTHATLLAMAISDOING

        • The Doctor

The phone doesn’t stay on when the battery is pulled out. There has never been a phone that could do that.

Geez. The guys on Android Central said this last week when they were talking about the G5.

          • moew

Actually a lot of phones could do that. Leave usb or the charger in, swap batteries. Yay.

          • The Doctor

…I’m not talking about when it’s on the charger.

        • Daistaar

Perhaps its hot swappable like a laptop battery. As long as its plugged to a wall charger it’ll remain on allowing you to swap the battery?

          • moew

The usb is in the bottom part, so that detaches. Again fail on LG’s part.

          • Daistaar

Ahhh you’re correct. Perhaps the battery is actually non removable and this is just a secondary battery that can be added to supplement the non removable battery?

    • it’s me tim-cock.

Use your brain lad. How can the phone be on without a battery?

      • moew

Internal capacitor or battery. Enough to get you through a swap. It’s certainly not rocket surgery. Now use your brain and re-read that.

        Also Kellen said HOT SWAPPABLE!

I’m not believing it either until he shows us a video of it.

        • M de Jong

rocket surgery :”) But yeah. Not hotswappable. Haven’t seen that in -any- video.

    • duke69111

I caught that as well, however I’m assuming he likely misspoke.

    • No hot swapping is the consensus.

    • Steve Wright

Bad Kellen! After the whole conversation in the first Statham Video last week, you had to say “Hot Swap”.

    • calculatorwatch

It’s not the first time he has used the term “hot swap” incorrectly. I notice because it bothers me every time. I guess to him it just seems like a catchy way to say that something is swappable though.

  • Markelous

Just got mine a couple of hours ago. This phone is awesome. Cant wait till they announce/release more “friends”

    • Tyler Durden

      Yay more camera grips!

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

A few hours?… That’s enough for Screen On Time! What are you getting?

    • Michael Chediak

      App drawer?

      • duke69111

The app drawer is now an option you can check in settings.

        • Slainte Threeseventeen

Actually LG said they were going to enable the app drawer by default, and it can be disabled if the user likes.

      • Markelous

Not yet. Just waiting for that update.

    • Dan Hanson

Does it come with a QC 3.0 wall charger?

      • Markelous

I’m not sure because I ordered a QC 3.0 from Amazon. But it does say its quick charging.

    • danny67

How’s the screen brightness? Does it come with fast charge 3.0 charger? Thx!

      • Yes the brightness… …one “pre-review” said while optimized for sunlight in various ways, in general the dimmest screen of any of the flagships – by a good bit. 360 nits they said. So what does anyone who’s got/seen one say??

  • The Doctor

The thing I like about the G5 is that it’s not a fingerprint magnet like the S7/S7 edge.

    • Picaso86

Thanks! you made my decision so much easier… Said no one EVER!!!!

      S7 rulessssss!!!! 🙂

      • TriguyRN

Why do you have to belittle the guy like that lol

        • Catherine Gans

When I looked at the draft of 6775 dollars,,bm I have faith that brother of my friend was like really generating cash in his free time with his PC. His aunt’s neighbor has done this for only 11 months and by now repaid the loan on their home and bought a new Car.

          aqz…

      • The Doctor

        Um, okay.

For the record, I am using an S7 edge as my daily driver, so…thanks for the comment?

        • zUFC

Don’t give in. Samdung sucks. I don’t care if their phones comb your hair for you. They still have that stupid(I-Phone) home button and hard keys. I wouldn’t use one for free. LG at least knows how to have their buttons the right way. This phone rules!! Also don’t know how people with a center hard button can call anything ugly. This thing looks good to me. I like it being a little different on the back. Makes it stand out.

What is up with all the G5 haters and Samdung lovers. Can the S7 make or receive calls yet? All their other phones had the worst reception ever(no matter whos service you were on). We all seem to forget that part.

          • Be Together. Not the Same!

I care two chits about a physical home button vs. on screen, just can’t see why people get so passionate about that. Also, I have had a S3, S4, S5, Note 4 and now S7 Edge, all on Verizon, never had reception issues on any of them.

          • Duffman

If all you’ve had for a while is a Samsung phone, how do you know you don’t have reception issues? lol

          • rodney11ride

            lol ^^^

          • Be Together. Not the Same!

Because I don’t drop phone calls.

          • Duffman

Yes, that’s the only mechanism that can validate good radio performance. /s Everyone knows Samsung radios are not as good as many OEMs, especially compared to Moto.

          • Be Together. Not the Same!

Sure, agreed, but if reception issues were there, I would not have stuck with Samsung, I am not brand loyal, I heavily consider screen, camera and storage when I purchase my phones.

          • Duffman

Not brand loyal my a**… lol

          • The Doctor

Ok. What an idiotic rant, but ok.

The G5’s look is akin to what I see after a night of drinking. Sure, the girl at the end of the bar looks great, but when you take her home and wake up next to her in the morning and look at her, you think to yourself “how much did I drink last night?”. Yeah. That’s how I feel about the G5.

          • Daistaar

Really though this was going to be about her being modular.

            https://youtu.be/N-1C6QlvHl8

          • zUFC

I was sticking up for you Dip $hit. Your and “idiot”. I should of known.
you all can make fun of the G5 but if I give proof of how your Samdungs are ugly as sin with their I-phone buttons your panties get in a bunch.
How’s this? Stay off the G5 comments. Keep your Sammy love to the Sammy articles. Don’t need your idiotic kind around here.

          • Daistaar

Do you not interact with things that have buttons? I guess you don’t do any of these things: use elevator, drive cars, watch television, use a computer, shop, warm up food, comment on droid-life, adjust the temperature, play a video game, etc.

    • It’s easy to not get fingerprints on a device when it’s one no one wants to use.

      • LGGATE

        LGGATE.
LG already knows that this ugly slide-out sh*t is going to be LG-GATE for LG’s financials 2016.

Cool, which one? I’m currently using the Ringke Fusion

          • Allyn K C

How do you like the Fusion? I’m using a clear Spigen Ultra Hybrid, but haven’t been impressed as it feels awkward in hand and collects fingerprints as much as a naked phone – so looking for a different option.
