Tip: Tiny Flashlight Adds Lock Screen Shake Feature for Quick Lighting Access

I’m not sure that I can even count all of the flashlight apps in the market these days (nor would I want to try), but one of them in particular has been downloaded somewhere between 10 and 50 million times. That app is called Tiny Flashlight. Now, normally we wouldn’t waste your time with a flashlight app, but this one just so happens to have been updated to version 4.0 within the last week. And in version 4.0 you get the handiest of features, which is the ability to activate the light with a simple shake at your lock screen. You will have to go into settings and manually tick the feature to “on,” but let me tell you, this sucker has come in handy more than a couple of times over the last few days. Just had to share.

Cheers Logan!

Tiny Flashlight requires too many permissions. 🙁

I use this one: MEGA Flashlight

Permissions: No need of phone calls, no need of system tools and no need of GPS location. 🙂

  • Oh yes, this is what I’ve been waiting for. Thanks for the help! I hope you will post exciting imformation more.

  • J Dub

Seems like some gripes with the permissions. What happened to picking and choosing the permissions of a certain app? Or was that built into a certain ROM? Agreed this should merely need LED access and hardware access to the accelerometer.

  • Chutney

I am shocked that this is being recommended Kellex, your recommendations are usually spot on but how can you explain the permissions? Would you please let us know what the logic was for this reccomendation? Maybe i’m missing the bigger picture…

  • thanks Kellex .. got the app this morning and have used it several times already. this is one of those “how did i live without this app” deals that you come across once in a great while.

Haha, i think this is so awesome, i was checking earlier and it might actually be true. Just take a look…x.co/co9G

Funny Thing, after downloading and installing this it,  and wanted to try out the little “Lockscreen Feature” Only to find out “I Don’t Have a Lockscreen” since I had the phone I never gave it any thought, just figured it was a Rooted GN Thing! Gotta look into that 🙂

  • That is amazing. I absolutely love it!

  • would have lot to have had this while me and the rest of the pacific northwest was getting pounded by snow and ice and power outages

didn’t work for me on my G-Nex. Shake at unlock screen, light turns on but another slight shake turns it OFF, another slight shake turns it on, etc. Tried adjusting the “shake sensitivity” settings, but then it just doesn’t activate the light period. Lame.

  • magy

14 monts both OS… my friend’s ex-wife makes $72/hour on the computer. She has been without a job for 7 months her paycheck was $9020 just working on the laptop for a few hours. Here’s the site to read more… MakeCash2.com

  • Smo86

Waste our time? I wish you posted more about apps that I may not have heard of, like this one.

  • Anonymous

Why is this inconsistent with the ICS design 🙁

  • Jeff Huntington

I like the app, but I looked at the permissions, why are there some many permissions requested?  This thing want’s camera access, internet access and GPS access.  I’ll pay for the app if they remove some these accesses, who knows where this data is being sent.

    • Granted

Damn right! There is absolutely no way a flashlight app needs ask of those except for crap data harvesting reasons, usually if not nefarious just used for stupid marketing.

    • If an app needs to use the camera LED it has to request the camera access permission. The other permissions are probably to satisfy the requirements of the ad network(s).

      – Benny (author of a similar less permission requesting and lighter app 😉 … for info click my name.

Doesn’t seem to work well on a GNEX (Stock). Worked once (It was very cool when it worked). Now nothing – no indicator when locked, doesn’t work during test sensitivity,etc.). Uninstalled until they do a GNEX update.

    • Anonymous

Agreed…  mine was hit and miss and even when it does work it shuts off as soon as the lock screen goes black.

  • Doit

It seems to conflict with Face Unlock. Either one or the other will work, never both.

  • Jspumphrey

New update for people using widgetlocker. came today

  • Jroc869, Cool story bro

Yeah so went to the market link and realized I already had this damn thin on my phone lol. My favorite feature is the red and blue strobe light. Tons of fun when you turn it on in the back seat of a dark car and watch the driver freak out. Gonna have to check out the new shake feature.

  • Posts like this are the reason I come to DL

    • Granted

Then you must not come here very often i’m sad to say.

  • fartbubbler

shaking my GNex could possibly be construed as a masturbatory hand gesture.

    I’M IN!!!

Definitely a great application for my galaxy nexus I am so happy

  • TC Infantino

LOL  Ok, this just reminds me of that SNL shake flashlight skit…

      Mad Tv 🙂

I couldn’t get it to work on Aokp build 19 but tried the flashlight led genuis and works like a champ on this buttery rom. Shake shake your phone and it works love the flash on the gnex nice and brighter than my previous moto phones.

  • StormbladeX69

Awesome feature! This simple app should be on everyone’s must have list. I was a Submariner for 13 years and don’t go anywhere without a flashlight.

Shake to turn on from the lockscreen. Perfect!

  • Great tip Kellex, much appreciated.

I delayed getting the gnex while i had a DX.. i always knew i would get a gnex solely due to ICS essentially being built for it.. it always baffled me when bionic owners would talk down to razr owners and all the other newly released phone owners bickering (amazing android has gotten so popular idiots fight amongst specific ANDROID phones now) but having owned the gnex for 3 days living with ICS… OMFG this OS is incredible… android jumped 5 years in its lifecycle and my work phone is an i*4 which accompanies my droid in the same pocket for 14 monts both OSs had pros and cons.. every single gripe i had about android EVERY GRIPE is solved.. it is simply that awesome.. not only are the interface animations and just visual style improved 10 fold.. everything is FINALLY 100% smooth and flush no lag or stutter in anything which is pretty unbelievable with the probably 3x more animations (but in a good way not unecessary)… flash player works how it always should have .. lag free even when you have all of the webpage viewable .. u can have a live background while playing flash and multiple apps open and still fly around the OS with not so much as a glitch.. i had ONE force close.. i was updating 7 aps while watching a flash news vid .. maps updated and i pulled down the noti bar to open maps while in the flash vid and maps crashed.. prolly an update bug but whatecver.. im in love (2.0->2.0.1->2.1->2.1.1->2.2.1->2.3.3 with a moto xoom i had for 13 days but returned it because i really did think honeycomb needed some work even tho potential was massive.. ICS seriously reminds me of win7 and how vista was released before it (HC) but 7 blows vista out of the water

    • Domikinzu

      cool story bro.

    • Huh?

What? What does any if this ramble have to do with this flashlight app?

    • JR

a couple of sentences would have sufficed.

  • I can’t get the shake feature to work.  Running GummyNex vs 0.6.5.

  • I have to ask for a copy of that home screen background. It has a clean, yet dirty feel to it.

  • ddevito

HA – had it installed (updated the other day) and never bothered to read the changelog. Thanks for the tip – although sometimes it doesn’t shut off, still very handy when it works

  • What wallpaper is that?

    • WAldenIV

      Kellex is the minimalist master.

  • John

Cool but these flaslight apps require too many permissions.

    I highly recommend Search Light:

quick, small, open source, & only requires 1 permission (fully ICS compatible).

    • Anonymous

Agree.  I like the shake on lock screen idea but how is such a simple app 1.6 megabytes?

      • Raven Flores

How the heck do I set it up to shake on locked screen? I have the Razr.  And have not been able to get it to turn on when I shake the phone.

        • Anonymous

Open the “Flashlight” app. Press the circle in the top right. Tap the tools button (bottom middle) and turn on “shake on lock screen.”

        • Anonymous

You can also go into the app and adjust the settings to make it more sensitive. Slide the bar all the way to the right and give it a try again.

    • Vincent

You’re right! Permissions out the ying yang. It’s a FLASHLIGHT.

  • Anonymous

Ive been using it and its a good idea but has some bugs. It turns on when your phone is ringing lol

  • Anonymous

I’ve had this little nifty flashlight app installed on my Droid X, but forgot about installing it on my Nexus. But now that you’ve mentioned that it’s been updated to 4.0 and with the cool lock screen feature, will download it. Sweet.

  • Anonymous

My Galaxy Nexus’ LED Flash doesn’t always work when It needs to, it just works whenever it wants. and not just in a flashlight apps, but also the camera or any app that uses it. anyone else experienced issues with the LED flash? I’m not sure if this is only my phone.

    • df2rools

just your phone, get a replacement asap.

    • mine does too!

  • is this led only? you cant shake into the white screen? i dont see it in my settings

  • Hah.  I just turned off this feature because it kept going off in my pocket randomly and I’d see a weird light shining through my pants.  If that didn’t happen it would be awesome.

  • what a great idea!

  • Ulnek75

it seems to activate when you have it in you pocket and you are running…  i really hope it has a timer if it goes off from the lock screen.

  • Doesn’t seem to work with Widget Locker.  Oh well.

  • Goblueboy

There goes one of my app ideas.

    • Procrastination?

      • Goblueboy

yeah, didn’t feel like learning java =/

    • Philip A. Kaiser

Just change it to shake open the camera instead. Oh, but wait, I guess that’s my idea now, and it is on record that I gave this idea to you.. not your day man.

      • Anonymous

I already have a patent for shake-to-camera…..and i think apple does too.

        • Philip A. Kaiser

Lol.. too funny my friend. They probably patented the “shake to dry,” if you know what I mean.

  • Got it! SO convenient!

  • is anyone else’s not working with widgetlocker?

  • Is anyone else’s not working with widget locker?

  • Anonymous

lol I guess I shouldn’t send you tips through twitter.  I sent this in on the 6th.

It is definitely the best flashlight app hands down now!

  • Really, I’ve been using it for about a month.  Problem is if I accidentally touch the lock/unlock button while it’s in my pocket, the shake feature will light up the phone in my pocket…which leads to all kinds of interesting questions.

  • Jennifer Grlicky

I stopped using the lock screen long ago.  I don’t really see a need for the lock screen, just a step in the way of what I’m trying to get to.

  • Stephen D

This has always been my favorite flashlight app.

  • Jonathonflores6958

Flashlight LED Genius has had the shake feature for a while now.

  • Anonymous

Really nice feature. Works Great on my Bionic.

  • Philip A. Kaiser

Ok, downloaded, changed setting, tested it like a dork while at work. Stupid geek smile achieved. Nice way to start the weekend.

  • Philip A. Kaiser

I am an easy sell. On my way.

  • Anonymous

Cool but what I really want is for someone to add applications to the circle. Would be nice to have 2 or 3 other options available to snap to.

    Has someone already done this?

    • It’s available as a mod for some custom ROMs. I have it on AOKP on my nexus.

      • Anonymous

cool, thanks for the info. I’ve been holding off on trying a ROM. A big part is because I’m so lazy I don’t want to restore all my apps. Even with the ease of titanium.

  • Anonymous

Sounds like a really good app, I just wonder how easy it is to ‘shake’. I would hate for it to turn on constantly in my pocket or slight movement when I pick it up or any other instances. I’ll still give it a shot though.

    • Anonymous

Its activated on the lock screen, not when the screen is off

    • Anonymous

It’s easy to shake on, but the lock screen has to up. I managed to update when the feature was on by default, so that was fun when the flashlight turned on when I tried to use my phone. I’m glad the author changed it to default off. I really do like the program but would rather have this feature off.

  • Awesome. It works great.

  • Anonymous

Lol. came “in handy more than a couple of times over the last few days.” What are you doing in the dark?

    • DBK

lol Maybe it’s best that we don’t know.  🙂

    • Pretty sure he’s in the Seattle area if I recall, we have had an ice and snow storm and lots of power outages.

      • Kevin Kuramura

Portland, unless he’s moved. No outages here that I’m aware of…

  • Freakdomination

Yep, that’s awesome! Going to the market now!

  • Will have to try this.
