Verizon: Unlimited 3G Customers can Upgrade to 4G LTE and Receive the $30 Unlimited Hotspot Deal

We’re still doing out best to help clarify all of the new tiered data questions that you have come up with, and we think we’ve got another situation worth mentioning.  We first reported last week that unlimited 4G LTE customers would have a separate unlimited tethering package that would cost $30 per month, but some of our 3G readers were wondering if they could eventually get into that.  The answer is “yes” according to @VZWSupport.  As long as you locked into an unlimited smartphone plan by the end of yesterday, you will also be able to keep it and grab the unlimited tethering plan when upgrading to a 4G LTE phone.

That help?

Cheers Vic!

I have to say Verizon is being really sneaky I had a blackberry that had unlimited data but it did not have a hot spot so my husband and I upgraded to the new droid phones and at the time we were given a plan a 50 dollar internet on the phone 4 gb with unlimited hot spot for my lap top. Out of the blue I noticed my 4g was at its limit it had not done that for months. The smart thing I did was I had my hubby on the phone 3 way so he was a witness to everything that was offered to me at that time.  I called Verizon and asked why it was at its limit they said well according to our records you never had that plan. I was like omg this is crazy you guys are liars it was offered and now you took it away with out telling us. we fought with this guy for a good 45 min and to end the story i got screwed and ended up with no hot spot and only the data on my phone. Thanks Verizon for screwing us over be aware that they will end promises anytime they want and take it out of the pc on their end. Get names get information dont let them do it to you.

Can I upgrade my 3gtools DROIDX to 4g DROIDX?

    • Playaways84

      Forget the tool part sorry

  • Little_man1336

Verizon is dumb for giving up Unlimited data….I just upgraded, not knowing of them getting rid of unlimited data. So now i am paying $80 for 2GB only, with most likely i am going to go over, and end up spending a lot of money on a stupid phone bill. So now i have to worry about going over, which scares me. I am thinking of switching over to a different company like T-mobile, mainly because they are offering an unlimited plan for $50, plus they have 4G too.

  • Bnfunny

Today is Aug 6th 2011 and just got off the phone with Verizon. Then spoke with suppervizor and she also said there is no 30 unlimited hot spot available. I persisted and said what I had read that custmers with unlimited data on there phones would be able to upgrade to a 4g phone and add the hot spot feature for an additional $30.  She said that is not the case..  Can anyone confirm getting the unlimited MHS on their 4g phone after July 7th? I also stopped into a Verizon store and everyone there said the same thing.  No $30 MHS   Need to find someone that can tell me the correct answer..

Folks, I initially ran into the same roadblock – upgraded to a Charge the evening of the 6th and then ran into denials that I could upgrade to the unlimited hotspot.  Verizon CSRs are very inconsistent on this point, and several claim they can’t even find the plan code to add unlimited Hotspot.

Even when you do qualify, it typically does not show up on the website “change features” section.  You have to call to get it added.

Here is what you should do:

    1) Verify on your Customer Receipt that came with your 4G phone/upgrade that you have these two features on your receipt:

EMAIL & WEB UNLIMITED $29.99 (the unlimited data plan)
MOBILE HOTSPOT PROMO $0 (the tethering/Hotspot promo that expired 7/7)

If you have these two features enabled on your account, you qualify for the $30 Mobile Hotspot Unlimited option, because Verizon recognizes you as having been a smartphone customer before 7/7, even if you had not received and fully activated your phone yet.  Keep in mind Verizon receipts are based on UTC/GMT — UK time — not EDT.  This means anyone completing an order after 8pm EDT Wednesday night will have a receipt showing an order date of 7/7, not 7/6.  You may need to be prepared to argue this point if a rep tells you your order was placed too late.  It was not as long as you completed it before midnight Thursday EDT.

    2) Try calling VZW customer support at 1-877-807-4646, Verizon’s orders and activations hotline.  Work through the prompts.  You may be prompted to accept a customer agreement and get “trapped” in a menu asking you to press “1″ or “2″ after accepting the customer agreement.  Press “0″ and wait to be transferred to a live agent.

Tell Verizon you are calling to activate your phone with the unlimited data and 4G Mobile Hotspot unlimited for $30 plans.  Tell them you are concerned because you were running into roadblocks getting these promised features added to your account, despite having ordered your phone before 7/7.  According to Verizon social media support employee “Chauncey” – Employee ID: 552099, so long as you ordered your phone before 7/7, and you received a receipt from Verizon showing the two features shown above, you were qualified to upgrade to unlimited data and unlimited 4G mobile Hotspot, and that an employee at Verizon would be happy to adjust your account to make sure these two plans were properly enabled if the system did not automatically take care of this for you.

My new Charge phone came out of the box with 4G Mobile Hotspot effectively disabled.  When you pressed the icon, it simply brought you back to the same menu.  Almost immediately, I was prompted for a software update.  This update “re-enables” 4G Mobile Hotspot, and interestingly I was able to use it as late as Saturday night without any paid tethering plan on my account.  That free “promo” was still working for some new customers.  I was not going to risk having the $30 unlimited window slam on my fingers, so I pursued the $30 plan anyway, and it was promptly enabled for me following the steps above.

As for the original article this comment is attached to, it’s my view the author is reading too much into Verizon’s tweet.  In my own calls with VZW’s social media support, everything I have heard from the memos read to me over the phone says Verizon was keeping the $30 unlimited tethering option open only to customers who either had or upgraded to a 4G phone before 7/7, not after.  Now Verizon may have sent out another memo changing their mind and opening the promo unlimited Hotspot to existing customers wishing to subsequently upgrade to a 4G phone who already had any unlimited data plan prior to 7/7, but I am unconvinced.

One last note: none of this applies to 3G customers.  Someone with a Droid X ran into a roadblock with Verizon upgrading to a 4G data plan for good reason – the Droid X is a 3G phone.  No 3G phones will qualify for unlimited tethering, period.

  • Percy615

I have a Droid X and I have called customer service and still no luck with adding the unlimited hotspot to a 4G plan even with my current unlimited data

  • Cabram8407
  • lititbe23

Not true. Tried to do this with a customer upgrading from original droid to Samsung Charge today and it wouldn’t let us add the unlimited MHS even when we called customer service.

    • http://twitter.com/il_Sole_Leone Stephen Box

for people who are not rooted or worry about getting caught using their rooted phone for wireless tethering I would say this a very good deal.  Unless of course you’d rather pay more for a 3G/4G tablet then pay $30 for only 2GB

Right now, not to shabby, I have my CM7′d OG, unlimited 3G.

So I can upgrade right now and get into the 4G unlimited and add the hotspot, that I’ll pass, because I know devs out there will get by with wi fi tethering, and really, I haven’t used it all that much to worry about it (for now).

Only thing is that I still don’t think there is a phone to upgrade to.

I’m not slamming anything currently out there, I just want to make the upgrade really count this time.

I’m thinking whatever comes out to make the bionic look shabby (not too hard, likely something by HTC, you know, really unlocked hehehe)

    • Anonymous

Well, HTC’s already confirmed they won’t lock anymore, which is great. I’m in the same boat, and I’m really hoping for a dual-core HTC (similar to the Sensation) on Verizon to upgrade to. Our OG was made obsolete within months of its release with the Nexus One and the era of 1GHz singe-cores. I don’t want to get a 1GHz single-core and see that phone go the same way…:

If only the D3 were 4G….and, you know, unlocked.

      • RW-1

        I still wouldn’t buy a D3, not enough RAM in it …

I’ll believe HTC, however I want to SEE it get an unlocked new phone with 4G on VZ. Proof is holding it in hand, promises are just that (not flaming HTC, just that I want physical evidence here).

        • chmcclellan

Same boat as well, would love to see the Bionic come out unlocked, but thats maybe too much to ask.  As for HTC, I don’t worry, is there any HTC phone on which full root hasn’t been achieved?  It’s almost as though they know a token lockdown is enough to make carriers AND entusiasts happy!

          • Anonymous

Also, the fact that they publicly promised to no longer lock phones doesn’t hurt. What I’m worried about is the lack of dual-core HTC phones on Verizon. No mention ANYWHERE, which is really annoying. Both Thunderbolt and Incredible 2 are pretty much using year-old tech besides those little cameras and the tbolt’s 4G. BFD, gimme a processor that won’t get obsoleted in a couple months (if not already obsolete)!

          • RW-1

Totally in agreement with you and chmecellan …

To me if we’re going to upgrade, first and foremost, you look at processor and RAM, just like a computer, for which it is, then I’ll see if it’s 3G or 4G.

I do not fall into the hype of 4G, we all have been on 3G for a while, it is not going to slow down now that 4G is out. (the sales reps would have you believe otherwise).

            Device specs first, network second.

Dual core, well, sure, but let’s face it…  IMHO … I’d love to see a larger thickness phone, slightly thicker than the OG, to hold a larger capacity batt.

We’re reaching, unless they (manuf’s) get their act’s straight and make a batt that can keep up, in addition, you have to acknowledge that there is a limit here, you can only make the thing such a size and you have to deal with the heat that thing is going to put out.

Any larger and they are mini tablets …

I’m watching patiently, and still enjoying my OG until then, lets cross fingers on the bionic, but RAM will make me pass on that one for sure.

    • Coolness

I guess I’ll be returning my Thunderbolt I got this week then. None of Verizon’s current 4G phone line are great or even good.

  • Padrick77

I hope this applies to my MiFi account when I upgrade to the 4g MiFi I still have an unlimited plan on that and it is truly unlimited because I regularly use close to 10gb and have never been yelled at,

    • Anonymous

I am in the same boat. Everytime I call in to change other devices on my plan VZW makes a point to tell me my mifi unit is eligible for upgrade. When I tell them I want to keep my unlimited plan, they tell me that I can not keep my unlimited on 4G. It might be interesting to call them today to see if they will allow it since this posting.

    • Oxyribose

What? There was never an unlimited option for the MiFi plans.

  • Anonymous

Hmm…so one has to call VZW or go to a corporate story to add the unlimited 4G tethering?  I looked under my account and see if I could add the feature and it’s not there.  The only thing I can add was one of the new tiered data packages.

Contemplating if this is worth it since I would only need to use it once in a while when I’m on vacation and the hotel I’m at doesn’t have free wifi.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716789798 Lonnie Kerchief

I’m in the same boat, as I’d only use it as a backup connection usually. The rep on the phone told me that I could add and remove it at will and that it wouldn’t reset or affect my contract in any way by doing so. I guess the only time this would become a problem is if my internet connection went down after hours and I couldn’t call in to have it turned on.

  • Ajhallx

guys hold the presses everyones gonna wanna be on vzw … family tired data a rep told me over the phone to watch for it soon

      “gonna wanna”?

  • Anonymous

Boy, I sure wouldn’t want to be a new verizon customer right about now.

    • Anonymous

Yup, all those converts VZW WAS going to get from at&t when their iPhone contracts are up are now going to stay put.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=710530141 Tyler Buchanan

Not necessarily, they’re getting the same deal with AT&T

        • Max0442

On the 2GB plan AT&T is $25 vs. $30 on Verizon. Might not seem like much, but for a single line that’s an extra $120 during the 2 year contract. WIth a 5 line share plan that would be $600 higher than AT&T.

I have Verizon so I’m not trolling, just sayin. If AT&T had better coverage I’d be looking at them. But between that and being grandfathered in on the unlimited data deal, it just makes sense to stay. When either of those change I will re-evaluate my options.

          • Anonymous

I was a VZW fanboy, but now am so pissed at VZW’s pricing and poor service I would switch in a heartbeat if I could afford to break my 5 phones’ contracts. As it is, I’m not going to get new phones until I can afford to switch. Hopefully Sprint will still have unlimited family next year. I noticed Sprint is also paying $125 per smartphone to port your number to them.

When I got my Droids, VZW was the only game in town, but now Sprint has better phones, better service in my areas (SE Pennsylvania), and cheaper family rates.

        • Anonymous

If they are existing grandfathered in on at&t that have “unlimited” there (much like existing VZW customers have).

So, their choice is stay with their existing unlimited plan with the deathstar, or switch and get shoved in a tier.

  • Anonymous

Boy, I sure wouldn’t want to be a new verizon customer right about now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716789798 Lonnie Kerchief

Ok so I’m confused. Are 3G users being punished for staying on 3G? I asked if there was an unlimited data package for my phone and the rep told me no, that I could only get the $20/2GB option.

    • Oxyribose

No, 3G customers on an unlimited data plan can get it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716789798 Lonnie Kerchief

I’ll have to call back then. The rep I talked to insisted that $20/2GB was the *only* option and that unlimited was absolutely not offered. I literally asked her 3 times.

        • Hhoffmann101

Same thing happened to me… I really want unlimited! Let me know what happened in your case!

      • Scott

I went online to upgrade my phone to another 3G one and it gave me the option of both the tiered plans and the unlimited that I currently have.  I cancelled the order after I saw that, but it was comforting nonetheless.

  • Darin Walker

What I would like to know is…is it TRULY UNLIMITED???  Or is it unlimited 5gig??  What does the FINE PRINT say???

    • Anonymous

That is the question that must be answer to know if this is worth it or not.

      • RW-1

I would bet that that is still in place.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=710530141 Tyler Buchanan

The unlimited 5GB was because they said that if you were using more than that that you’re tethering and breaking the terms of service…. In this case, obviously you’re tethering, and its not breaking the ToS so I doubt they can hit you on that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/poohw Pooh Williamson

ok i don’t currently have a smartphone, but i do have the $30 unlimited plan… will that be grandfathered in when i upgrade to the bionic or galaxy s2 when i decide which one i want and when they come out?

    • Abc

So how do you have a data plan with no smartphone?

      • http://www.facebook.com/poohw Pooh Williamson

i have an unlimited data plan with a non-smartphone that still has internet access which i use all the time.
i can’t use any apps besides the ones that are on the phone (which really arent apps)

    • Tesseract 3

Unfortunately I am afraid you might be screwed. It was my understanding (from the prolific posting about this issue that Kellen has done), that people with $30 unlimited plans for feature phones would not be grandfathered in to $30 unlimited plans for smartphones. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

      • Ajhallx

its gonna be hard to say depends on the rep i heard yes and another said no to me 30 dollars is 30 dollars unlimited is unlimited so i say yes ;/// on the other hand my droid x is acting up waiting for replacement  was told to not switch any phones  that Are not  smart phones because i would lose me grandfathering  … lol good bye all my stock of old phones lol…

        • Tesseract 3

Well yeah you might be able to get certain reps to bend the rules, especially if you threaten to leave, or say just the right thing. But I think the official policy was that you can’t get grandfathered in if you have an unlimited plan that is for a feature phone, that you only get grandfathered if the unlimited plan is for smartphones. Hard to say though, I am sure a rep CAN bend the rules, if you can convince them too.

    • Malissa Me

That plan does not carry over to a smart phone.

    • Davidshackelford5

      yes….

All I can say is thank you Droid Life, for the time and consistency in covering verizon’s data plan’s changes. Again Droid Life, thank you so much and you guys ROCK.

Naturally VZW can change their plans at any time, and doesn’t protect you against that. It protects you from a clueless rep that mistakenly tries to tell you otherwise.

Of course the question was why believe information “on the internet” and the answer was simply that this is an official VZW source.

Thank you Capt Obvious. The question was though, why believe this information, and the answer was this is an “official” source (per VZW)… that has nothing to do with what changes they may make in the future, it is about what is the company stance “right now”

my point is this…if i hacked into say president obama’s twitter account, and posted something…does that make it official? how would you know if someone hacked into vzw’s twitter account or not…which is why stuff off the internet normally doesnt hold up in cout

but just as it became clear quickly that fox news was hacked, you would know that this happened.  in the meantime you can still trust this as a source.  again, it is not about what will “hold up in court”, but that it is a god guideline to be comfortable with what you know as fact vs. internet rumors.  there are actually sources that you can (generally) trust as accurate… even on the internet.

Easy because the man would be dead 15min later and on his tombstone it would say, “Here lies the moron that thought it ’twas Smart to hack the presidents twitter P.S you got pwned noob”
