Verizon Prepares New Chart of Tiered Data as July 7 Looms

At this point, you probably know everything there is to know about Verizon’s new tiered data plans, but just in case you were holding out hope that they would have a last minute change of heart and ax the program, we have site confirmation that they are all ready for launch.  Yep, visual confirmation that Big Red is just moments (2 days) away from flipping the switch on tiers of 2GB for $30, 5GB for $50, and 10GB for $80.

The good news is that all of the current unlimited data plan members in the building get to keep that unlimited data for the foreseeable future and these tiers mean nothing.  New customers and lines though, not so much.  If you don’t lock yourself into an unlimited smartphone package by the end of July 6, you’ll be subject to tiering (that a word?).

Cheers @0mie and @rusty_richards!

  • Tom Bryson

Verizon cancels unlimited data plan (or changes contract price) can I go to AT&T without penalty?

  • hellooooo

I currently don’t have a smartphone so could i go tomorrow and purchase one(and the unlimited plan) and still be grandfathered into the unlimited data for $30/month?

  • KC

Having just had a pretty long conversation with a seemingly knowledgeable Verizon rep, here is what they told me:  If you have a month-to-month “unlimited” plan now (regular or blackberry) you can upgrade to one of the current 4G phones after the 7th and remain on an unlimited plan.  HOWEVER, upgrading is based on the current selection of phones they have now.  If you are month-to-month and wish to renew your contract when a new phone comes out, there will be no guarantee that you can upgrade to that new phone and remain on an unlimited plan.  It was stressed to me that the Charge was probably the best bet (unless you buy a newer phone for full price after renewing).

    Hope this helps!

  • Whitl103

I don’t know if tiering is a word, but it’s a killer pun.

  • http://maxtechnewz.blogspot.com/ max

    wtf man

  • dilbert

why isn’t the $30 plan eligible for discounts?

  • JP

    These prices are tierable!

    • Maxxmentum

ROFL, that was hammy but great

  • Charlie

Some of the news agencies are reporting that current customers can keep their unlimited data “up until they sign a new contract.” And that is exactly what a Verizon rep told me on Sunday. She said I’d lose my unlimited data when it came time for me to get a new phone/contract. I currently have an OG Droid, FYI.

    • Charlie

I’m just hoping they’re all wrong, or I’ll have no choice but to leave Verizon when my contract ends this fall.

  • Justin Moseley

Why aren’t they making options more affordable? These prices are ridiculous! Where is the 1GB plan for $20? or 250MB for $15?

  • Scott

Just walked into my local Verizon store and the sales lady told me that this was simply a rumor.  I called the national number afterwards and the guy confirmed it, but wouldn’t give me a straight yes/no about grandfathering should I renew my contract after July 7th.  VERIZON.  If you’re going to be a terrible company, at least be terribly consistent with information!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=710530141 Tyler Buchanan

Considering they haven’t officially confirmed anything you can’t blame them when you’re the one reading on blogs about rumors…. If they wanted you to know ahead of time, they would have just told everyone.

  • Anonymous

Do people not realize a lot has changed since they began offering unlimited data?  Even at the $30 price point?  The roll-out of many cloud based media services, mobile hotspot and now the ability to use much more data with LTE speeds.  Think of it for a moment, unlimited plans were released when WinMo and BB ruled the smartphone market and video of any kind was a joke.

Looking at the users in my company their consumption has gone up over 10x on average in the last two years as they have all transitioned from WinMo and BB to Android.

I’m not saying I like the plans, I’m just saying it helps to take a step back and look at the big picture.

    • Anonymous

And Verizon should have been investing their profits to upgrade their routers to ensure they can handle the traffic. Tech does not stand still, only Verizon does. In the meantime, the US has some of the slowest but most expensive broadband in the world – on par with third world countries.

I have invested in gigabit routers and NAS at home to support my bandwidth needs. Verizon should have been too.

      • Anonymous

I agree with you that how things are handled in the US in terms of competitiveness is as it should.  I think this needs to be addressed as healthy competition will more likely bring cheaper prices.  Right now most people won’t switch carrier because the of the difficulty, especially family plan users.  Then the ones that do switch aren’t likely to do so in numbers to have any impact.

There has to be a more effective way to foster competition, I just don’t know what that is other than not angry blog posts (not referring you to your response but others).

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=710530141 Tyler Buchanan

When you willingly give your money to a company in return for a service, no where in that agreement are terms involving you dictating to them how they should use the money.  You demand more/newer/faster, you pay more.

  • Shadowz1218

If I have currently have a basic phone with the unlimited data plan, can I keep the plan when I upgrade to the Droid Bionic when it’s released?

    • Knightcrusader

Nope, you have to be on a Smartphone data plan. If you have access to a used smartphone, even an old one, switch to it now and use it until the Bionic comes out next month (or whenever it comes out for real)

      • Shadowz1218

I have the original Motorola Droid, but unfortunately it’s broken. I guess I’ll just have to ask people if they have an extra smartphone that I can use.

  • Anonymous

Dont mean to be off topic here but, kellex, can you please go over whether or not root users running a custom rom such as, say, cyanogen will be able to use Verizon’s new 30 dollar unlimited tether plan on our thunderbolts? I am interested in buying this feature but not willing to give up cm7. Will the official hotspot app be downloadable? Thanks in advance.

  • TheAndroid1

Wouldn’t it be funny if Verizon was just trying to start this huge rumor and then on July 7, they do nothing, everything was to get them more customers.

  • Eric

Why would they allow people to pay $30 for unlimited data and force new people to pay the same for only 2gb of data? Seems stupid

    • Anonymous

Only those people who are clueless enough to sign up for a new plan after 7/7 would be stupid. Why on earth would any intelligent person sign up for the most expensive data plan in the industry with the worst phones????

      • TheJudge

Let me ask you a serious question c_hack….
How many people in this country know that the declaration of independence was NOT signed on July 4th?

        Exactly.

How many sheeple do NOT even know that the Federal Income Tax does NOT go towards our:
        -military
        -infrastructure
        -education/schools
        -highways and roads…. ????

        Exactly.

How many sheeple don’t know that they:
-have the right to travel YET
-apply for a permission to strip that right away, in exchange for a government granted privilege?

        Exactly.

The masses in this country: and who are Verizon customers are VERY unintelligent and
        do NOT freely think.

        • Anonymous

-apply for a permission to strip that right away, in exchange for a government granted privilege?

You have me curious about this point. Please elaborate further

    • Commonsense101

      Money, that’s why.
      Don’t you see?

$30/month for unlimited data = Verizon losing money….how do they lose money?
According to their new tiers…All new subscribers will have to pay:

$30/month for 2Gb of data =Verizon will offset their losing money for this new data pricing scheme
which will net them more money each time someone goes over 2GB (which nets a profit of $10 PER)

The profit margin will exponentially increase as more people go over, which is what Verizon is banking on.

  • J Ridd

So is there a “rate after allowance” for the 2 GB plan? Or do they just cut you off until your billing cycle ends?

    • Commonsense101

When you go over: you will pay 10.00 per 1GB of overage.

  • dilbert

Am I reading the little (2) footnote correctly?  The 2GB data package is not eligible for discounts?  I’m currently getting a nice corporate discount on my $30 data package and this is going away??? Stinks……

  • Anonymous Coward

Glad my Nexus S 4G arrives on the 7th… VZW can suck it.

  • http://www.techefficacy.com JD

$30 for 2GB is a rip off. Though they will say “95% of customers don’t use more than 2GB of data.” What I want to know is are these new plans data for all lines or just one. In other words can you buy a data pack for the entire family?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=710530141 Tyler Buchanan

      $30 a line……..

    • http://twitter.com/il_Sole_Leone Stephen Box

then I would say “if 95% of your customers use less then 2GB than why do away with unlimited?”

      • Commonsense101

Then Verizon would say, “100% of what you said we don’t give a rat’s ass about!”

Why do you need confirmation of what this is really all about?

The fact is most users don’t use that much data.
It’s the minority (us) that use ungodly amounts of data, that: Verizon NEVER intended a single
consumer to use…in the first place.

This new measure will ensure that it stops with the old power users and BEGINS with the
new users who will have to buy data as they use it…

In the end, take a look around bro…
The system can’t tell all of us to take out some sharpies….and cross out 1 (on a dollar bill)
and write on it .50 cents…Nope.  So you watch every major commodity (sans gas as of now)
skyrocket.  Verizon hasn’t increased prices in quite a long time BUT they are changing terms
of service, but did it in such a way as to avoid ETF waivering….

In the end the complainers will still be handing over their money to Verizon.
Even if they will be mumbling expletives under their breath as they do it.

        • http://twitter.com/il_Sole_Leone Stephen Box

sorry I caused you to jump on your soapbox man, I already realize all that.  I should have pointed out that I have jerk tendencies.   I was basically making the same point as you that this new plan has nothing to do with better serving the customer and anything to do with filling Verizon’s pockets.  If they wanted to help the consumer they would off a lower plan money wise for users that don’t use a lot of data and only charge the heavy users extra.  It is what it is though and I am very seriously considering Verizon in January when my contract expires.  I think a good # of people will do the same but maybe not enough for Verizon to care.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=710530141 Tyler Buchanan

If they wanted to help out the customer they’d give away their product for free… Wait you mean to tell me that they’re in BUSINESS to make MONEY? *GASP* I never would have realized, I thought Verizon was a charity!

    • Anonymous

There are no family data plans on Verizon. The only mention there has ever been has been on blog posts – wishful thinking. Once again – THERE ARE NO FAMILY DATA PLANS ON VERIZON NOR HAVE ANY BEEN ANNOUNCED FOR 7/7.

  • DJMoney28

Was at a Verizon Store yesterday getting new screen protectors for my DX and a sales rep told me as well as other customers in the store, that the word he is hearing coming down from corporate was that those with Unlimited Data Plans are Grandfathered in for LIFE.

I’m still a little confused on the unlimited tethering from the article a few days ago. If I add tethering after the 7th, is that not going to be unlimited anymore? I saw something about 2GB for $30. Isn’t unlimited $20 right now? I’m speaking only of 3G, I don’t plan on having a 4G device this year.

  • Anonymous

Early when these rumors started, there was word on Verizon introducing Family Shared Data plans; Has that been axed?  Any confirmation or news about Family Shared Data Plans? It’s obvious current customers don’t want to loose unlimited Data, but I can see where a Family Shared Data Plan can be beneficial for some customers.

  • Mrcheese24

If I switch from 3g to 4g after the 7th do I keep my unlimited plan?

    • Nofan

yes if it is a smartphone to smartphone change

      • rick

yeah .. this is what i was told this weekend by a sales rep (i know that doesn’t mean much .. but .. just sayin’).   any kind of smartphone data plan will be grandfathered.   hope it proves true . . .

    • Nofan

yes if it is a smartphone to smartphone change

    • Jbona3

Last I had read, yes, if you upgrade from 3G to 4G on when you’re eligible after the 7th for an upgrade you maintain the unlimited data plan for $30 on 4G.

    • Smtxom

They had an article last week that stated new 4g upgrades would still keep/get unlimited data

  • Bobhillyard2003

so this means, that when you go into get a new phone and sign a new 2 year. HELLO tiered data plan! this is just something else FOX News will blame on Obama.

What is the penalty for going over 2GB? I have found where it says it is 10 bucks for each GB after 2. But does this kick in as soon as you cross the 2GB line or is it pro rated?

So I’m on vzw with an old dumb phone. Term of contract is expired, so I can upgrade/renew any time. I’m waiting for the bionic. Can I add unlimited data today and just pay $30/month without having a smart phone? Then in a month, can I sign a new 2-yr deal to get the discounted bionic price ? So confused.

No, you need to have a smartphone to get on the smartphone plan, sadly.

Go buy a crappy smartphone and then get the unlimited data on your line before the transition to tiered plans.  You will then be able to upgrade to the bionic later and keep your unlimited data.

          Ebay.

          or Craigslist

        • gregba

Craigslist, ebay- you can get a droid eris for about $50

        • Knightcrusader

I don’t think you can get one on eBay soon enough unless you can activate the ESN before its shipped and be without your phone for a few days. Craigslist would be more like it.

OG Droids go for around $100 on eBay right now, but you can also go as old as Windows Mobile 6 smartphones, or maybe older than that. I am letting my uncle borrow my Samsung i760 until he can save up to get his Thunderbolt he wants.

I heard you can get a Motorola Q for about $30, and that is a non-touchscreen Windows Mobile smartphone.

      • Keith

What would be the cheapest crappy smartphone that would work?

Only if your old dumb phone is actually classified as a smart phone. For anything else, such as feature phones, when you do upgrade you will have to select one of the new tiered data plans.

Spoke to a VZW rep this morning.

  • v8dreaming

Verizon had the chance to do something right and totally effed it up. They are now more expensive than at&t, I believe, with these plans.

    • Nofan

Would it be smart for BMW to lower the cost of there cars below Honda? No. So ATT should be much cheaper or VZW should be more expensive because you are paying for quality and speed.

  • Rnr24553

They should have a 3 GB option.

  • Knightcrusader

To hell with these tiered plans… I am making sure all my friends and family even remotely thinking about getting a smartphone switches tonight or tomorrow before its too late.

My mom is on an old Samsung dumbphone, so I am going to put her on my Droid, and my uncle has an E815 still so I am going to let him use my old WinMo 6.1 Samsung i760 to get on unlimited before its too late… at least until he can get the Thunderbolt that he wants.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=710530141 Tyler Buchanan

If these are older people who really don’t seem to care, there’s no way they’ll go over 2 GB

      • Knightcrusader

True, but I am on the 1400 Talk + Text Plus Data Promotional Plan with 5 lines – the plan requires all of them to have unlimited data and my mom’s is the only one with a dumbphone. If she gets an upgrade later to a smartphone, it might yank the plan from me since it has to be on every line. So, I want to nip this problem now before it gets hairy later and possibly lose my $100/month data discount.

I agree with you, I doubt she’ll use 2GB, but I don’t want to worry bout it. Better safe than sorry.

  • Anonymous

Hmm…adding insult to injury, it would appear that the 2GB plan isn’t eligible for discounts–meaning that the many of us who have discounts via our employers wouldn’t get one on data unless we opt for the 5GB or 10GB plans. Currently on the “unlimited” plans, the employer discounts *do* apply to data packages for the primary line.

Verizon, could you go *any* lower?!

  • http://twitter.com/MrBouche MrBouche

You know … Once they make the grandfathering magically disappear because you know they will.

If they can cut your service, then that is just BS.

I hope they lose a lot of customers over this.  They deserve it.

    • Dave

Why? Where are customers going to move to? Are you leaving?

      • Anonymous

Sprint does not have these tiers at the moment. And some of their phones are better also.

I am not leaving because I have a 5 line account that I don’t think is affected. However my daughter and wife have upgrades available at the end of this month and both want feature phones. If there became an issue at that time yes I would leave for sure.

2 gig for $30 is not a good deal. Often I go over that myself… sometimes not, but I bet my daughter will.

The cost for this data is getting out of control.

        • Mr. Joe

Yeah, I guess it’s worth living next to a window for the rest of my life to have unlimited data with Sprint.

I know plenty of people with Sprint that are very happy.

then just tell your daughter to use wifi when possible and if she goes over then she has to pay.

I upgraded 2 lines that weren’t due to upgrade until September.
Don’t be a man who lacks assertiveness and confidence.

Not sure what a feature phone is since ALL phones have features….but a smartphone
will need a 3G unlimited data plan at $30 BEFORE JULY 7th or your 2 women in your life will NOT
be able to get unlimited data thereafter….So get ready to leave IF your women in your life choose to
          procrastinate doing so.

If the cost of data is “getting” out of control: then you’re not even mad yet.
Either fish or cut bait, it’s up to you but don’t let your EGO and pride decide to leave
all because you’ll get butthurt when Verizon won’t let your women get unlimited data once
they’ve up and decided to drop their regular phones and opt for a smartphone because
Verizon won’t give a shite due to your negligence.

          • Anonymous

LOL… We called earlier and we are going in to do their upgrades today. Daughter wants the Charge and not sure about the wife yet.

    • vanilla ice

Unlimited 4G for 30$ a month? Thank you Verizon, you will never lose me as a customer.

      • http://twitter.com/MrBouche MrBouche

The grandfathering isn’t forever.  is it? It wouldn’t surprise me if they revisit the issue of how long people get to keep unlimited once the number of new customers slows due to better prices at Sprint.

I am in my contract until December.  Maybe by then they’ll refine their grandfathering clause and maybe some other service will offer a cheaper rate.  It depends.  My budget pretty much sucks.

I worked for a company that went back on it’s word and went from free to a charge service overnight. It’s easy for a company to change it’s mind so long as they don’t make some sort of contractual stipulation.  All I have read concerning getting to keep unlimited were the words ‘for now..’ or ‘forseeable future’.

        • http://www.techefficacy.com JD

Absolutely. Unlimited data will probably go away around the time the AT&T & T-Mobile merger is complete. Then you only have 1 inexpensive national carrier.

        • Jeff

          I think you are correct…..

Sprint should see a big bump in new smartphone customers.  If they were smart (doubt that they are) they would launch a huge ad campaign showing the pricing difference….

  • http://twitter.com/wynalazca Andrew Webber

You should change that last word to ‘tierrany.’

    • Anonymous

      That’s pretty good. :)

    • EC8CH

either that or VZW is tiering customers a new *hole.

    • Mr. Joe

      Why?

They’re being very nice in letting us existing customers with unlimited data keep it.  They could be nasty McPanties and take it away from us when we upgrade.

In the end this is only bad for non smartphone/new customers.

In all reality who gives a rats *bleep* about them.  We’re safe, and that’s all that matters.

      • Jeff

        But for how long?

“the foreseeable future” but you must read that in a spooky wizard voice.

Who cares about the future?  Live now!

You can sit in your computer chair till you die wondering when you’ll loose something.  We’ll loose it one day the same way we’ll all die one day.
But I’m not going to spend any time thinking about either.

      • TheJudge

The problem with your crappy narrow minded myopic point of view is that
being a selfish dolt is how we’ve gotten to this point and have fallen so far from the tree.

If you celebrated your enslavement (yesterday) rather than know the truth that
your ignorant persona seems to obscure then it stands to reason you’ve reaped what you’d sown
screwing America in the process because sadly many people think like you do.

my thoughts exactly.  I am locked in with unlimited data, so I am sticking with big red, but the moment that changes is might be credo or sprint for me.

Anyone else see the marketing potential for  promotions tied to this in the future? Like buy the new Bionic and get the 5Gb plan for the price of 2Gb, etc. ??? Or am I just hoping/dreaming?

    • Knightcrusader

I never thought about that, but I bet they would.

Hell, I’m on the $10 unlimited data plan, so they could always pull out things like this to pull people in…

Can someone with a “feature phone”/”dumb” phone apply an unlimited data plan to the line before the 7th and keep it if they don’t want to upgrade to a smart phone right now?

    • Anonymous

I don’t think so, I believe you have to be on a smartphone unlimited data plan….I could be wrong though…

    • Knightcrusader

I need to know this too, cause my mom has unlimited data on her dumbphone and I need to switch her over tonight to my old Droid if its not going to pull over on a smartphone upgrade.

      • Anonymous

AFAIK there is a completely separate data structure for dumb phones(right now). You have to have a smartphone on the line to sign up for the unlimited smartphone data package.

        • Knightcrusader

That’s what I figured. She doesn’t even use data at all, but since I am on the Talk+Text Plus Data promotional plan, it had to be added to her line as well. Might as well get her used to using these newfound smartphone contraptions…
