Verizon Enters the Text App Arena with V CAST Messages

Normally we ignore anything with the word “VCAST” attached to it, but this new messaging app from Verizon appears to be worth at least a tiny mention.  While I’m an avid Google Voice user, I will say that after dancing around this littel guy for a few minutes, you can see that someone actually spent some time developing it.  It’s going to try and compete with Handcent and Chomp, which is quite the task, but I’m definitely digging some of the functionality and features that have been tossed in.  I’m liking the “Recent Calls” option for sending quick texts off, the location-based messaging, and the group conversation mode.

For those of you looking for something new, might be worth a quick spin?

Currently only supported by the OG Droid, Droid 2, Droid X, LG Ally, Eris, Incredible and Fascinate.

Cheers Michael!

Dump text messaging and message for free with Beluga Pods. Works on any smartphone and the web. Had a location feature, picture sharing, group pods. Its like your own private twitter on your phone with no need to use your text feature. I have unlimited texting but am considering dropping it down to 200 now that I’m using Beluga. Friends with regular phones can still receive your Beluga messages via SMS.

The record audio and attach audio functions do not work on this at all. Kinda dissapointed as that was the only reason I wanted to try this app out lol. Oh well!

I tried the app for a few minutes. I like the delete old messages settings, chomp needs that. I would have liked to be able to change the colors of the text bubbles. Didnt see that in the settings tho. I would also like a quick popup window and quick compose/reply like chompsms. Maybe once these features are added in…..

Saw the places by bing, for me that = no sell. Come on its an app on android, use Google Maps you idiots no one likes bing! Hate that Microsoft Verizon partnership where Microsoft obviously payed Verizon a ton of money to use them instead of the awesomeness El Google.

    *Rant over*

I guess I could download this and see what all the buzz is about, but I’ve never really understood the need for a text messaging app (of any kind) to begin with. That kind of sounds like, “check out the new phone app for your phone.” What’s really the point? (and I’m asking that seriously).

  • Mr. Joe

Looks like vzw actually made a decent app!

i don’t like: doesn’t send over wifi (like voice, kik, etc.) when in areas with low or no service, and the maps are weird (not google)

how do you get rid of the bubbles, I hate that crap

  • Jonathon_flores

Dude, you guys must be far behind in msging apps. Chomp and Handcent are far outdated. GoSMS blows those guys out of the water. Very clean, detailed UI, regular updates, devs listen to users, it’s FREE! Do an article on GoSMS. That’s worthy of a post.

    • Anonymous

Hey thanks for the info on GoSMS. I just got it and like it.

    • Anonymous

I installed GoSMS but there is a huge problem, I have the popup set up. So when I get a text it will pop up, well it pops up fine but the message never makes it to the message thread.

grr, this app would be 5/5 if it had this working

  • Whitl103

    Appallingly ugly icons.

  • uncle paul

handscent and chomp, but no mention of GOSMS? wtf?

  • Qbrisco

I will give it a try

  • Beastcmg

Places by BING fail one reason not to use it

  • Ccw In Az

    FAIL…Cannot adjust font sizes!

  • Anonymous

chomp is still better…… if this allowed for customization i would give it another go. the colors are HORRIBLE! =)

how does one use google voice as a text messaging client?

    • http://twitter.com/powerstream Glenn Pope

      Download the google voice app.

  • digsoreos

Don’t bother until Motorola/Google fixes the SMS messaging bug that timestamps incoming text messages with their Greenwich Mean Time time rather than your local time. Otherwise, all of your incoming texts will appear at the top and not threaded in proper sequence with your replies.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mobrienjr Michael OBrien

I have not seen this bug, please do explain further and also which device it runs on.

      • digsoreos

Happens on Droid X. You won’t see it in the stock text messaging app. But if you install Handcent or the VCast text messaging app, and you look at the timestamp of your incoming texts, the time will be whatever the Greenwich Mean Time was when you received it. You can also see this if you go to your Contacts app, select a contact that sent you a text, swipe to the right to see your contact’s history, and notice the incorrect timestamp there for a recent text from them.

        • Anonymous

Just installed goSMS on my Droid X and the times appear to be correct.

  • EC8CH

If this lets you attach an audio file to a text that would be an improvement over the stock messaging app on the OGD.

  • Jeremy Gentry

I love big red, but i tend to boycott anything “VCRAP”

    • EC8CH

VZ don’t care… they’ll push VZ Nav to your phone and lock it in.

Just try and ignore our VCRAP… MuHaHaHaHa!

      • http://mariasama16.livejournal.com/ J Harrell

        Yay root.

  • Josh

Are you guys sure it doesn’t secretly charge you $4.99 a month on your VZ bill? ;-)

    • Jeremy Gentry

VZW charges you for the stupidest things sometimes, i swear they would charge you to use the phones built in calculator.

gosms is pretty decent.. switched my wife from hancent to it last week. But this thing has some nifty features… I rarely use SMS, but sending a location quickly would be nice.. instead of having to use easyshare or open google maps. I tend to use kik, gvoice sms, or gtalk..

I dislike Handcent, so I’ll give this a shot

  • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

There’s not even a small margin that VCAST Messaging can even slightly compete with Handcent, the greatest, smoothest and best text messaging app on Android.

However, I may mess with this app, maybe, but not really sure yet. May prove useful, but why get it when we have Handcent?

I really wanted to like Handcent but it kept getting bugs. It messed up all my sounds for calls and texts emails you name it. Reinstalled it worked great then BAM it did it again. Idk why it does but at like 2 am it just goes mid-evil on my set up. I loved the custom alert settings and even stock vanilla look but that bug had to go. So back to stock text app for me.

Handcent has been buggy at times for me too but I like their “blacklist” feature. Anyone know if this vcast sms thing has this feature?

On a side note…the way handcent lists their updates cracks me up with how they put “COOL!” after some of the update decriptions. http://www.handcent.com/News.php

      • Anonymous

Yes exactly, I had handcent as well for a long time loved the pop up but after a while and after much trial and error I found that handcent was lagging my phone even when I wasn’t texting. I removed it and now back to stock texting and no more problems. I really don’t see anything at this pont that any text app has that I want that the stock texting app doesn’t.

        • Anonymous

besides black list and custom text alerts per contact theres nothing i need over the stock app.

      • uncle paul

Check out GOSMS, i was in the same boat..

Do you get charged for these messages if you don’t have the plan added to your account?

    • http://twitter.com/exer_505 Alex Mocaby

Yea, as far as I know, it’s just a GUI for texting. It’s not like google voice.

      • http://twitter.com/powerstream Glenn Pope

Thats what I thought. Hope to see google voice getting some of these features.
