Android Dominates Holiday Sales, DROID Brand Still Cruising

Online cell retailer Wirefly released it’s Q4 list of top selling devices and Android came deeply embedded into it.  The HTV EVO topped the charts, but our trusty Droid brand managed to make up for 3 of the other spots in the top 10.  The Incredible, who seems to still be killing it in sales after a rocky summer, came in at 2nd with the Droid X and 2 also making the list.

  1. HTC EVO™ 4G (Sprint)
  2. DROID Incredible by HTC (Verizon Wireless)
  3. Samsung Captivate™ (AT&T)
  4. DROID X by Motorola (Verizon Wireless)
  5. Samsung Intercept™ (Sprint)
  6. BlackBerry® Torch™ 9800 (AT&T)
  7. Sony Ericsson Xperia™ X10 (AT&T)
  8. DROID 2 Global by Motorola (Verizon Wireless)
  9. Samsung Epic™ 4G (Sprint)
  10. Samsung Fascinate™ (Verizon Wireless)

It should be noted that Wirefly does not sell the i*hone, but even if they did, we’ll assume that Android would still have 8 of the top 10 spots.  Well, unless people are actually still buying the 2 year old 3GS, which sadly, still happens.  More info if you are interested can be found here.

The only non-Android device was the BlackBerry Torch.

Wirefly is also having a big Droid sale right now which includes the Incredible for free.

These are just their top selling brand. It does not relate to anything that they don’t sell. There are some really good smartphones coming available from the Prepaid operators like Straight Talk. I recently picked up a Nokia E71 from them. It has all the Smartphone capability at half the price of anything else, and I am not stuck on a contract so I can update in ^ months time if I want to.

I have a hard time believing anything Wirefly says, given their reputation.

Good to see the Incredible right up there. It definitely hasn’t gotten the credit it deserves.

I have to assume their sales are statistically insignificant when comparing all phones sold through traditional channels. So not sure what use this report is unless you want to see the buying habits of whats likely a very specific demographic.

No surprise here. The phones are so much lower in price than the I*hone and are supported by better networks. What’s not to like?

  • Aubreyvt

Please don’t start saying…”it’s because android gives there phones away”. No one is holding A**le hostage….well, except maybe Mr. Jobs. Not that anyone with reasonable sense would get an I*hone anyway.

    • PizzaGuyInErie

They (Wirefly) do not sell the i*hone, there is only 1 i*hone compare to how many Android devices, i*hone is on one carrier. I don’t own an i*hone, I have a Fascinate and I’m 100% Android (own 5 devices so far). Fair is fair though. The report should be “Top Selling Android Devices:, or “Top Selling Devices that Wirefly sells”. Or “Top Selling Phones Wirefly Gives Away For Free”. Either way, good for Android. And a a developer, that equates to more sales for me :-)

      • Aubreyvt

I understood that they don’t sell them. But everytime something like this comes out someone always says “they give them away”. U can look at it 2 ways also that I*hone is only on one carrier. 1. They have don’t understand marketing or 2. No other carrier wanted their crappy phone. Im leaning toward #1 but I could be swayed. :-)

Many overslept when alarms on Apple’s iconic mobile phone failed to go off.

      TRUTH!

I can’t believe the X10 made this list!

Blackberry might want to consider a new name… “Torched” seems more appropriate.

    • Chris Nimon

I agree. it’s one giant POS of a phone. Wife got a free one from her employer and I find even their email system is not as good. Plus it takes like 16 clicks to purchase an app on this thing. Not joking… “Do you want to purchase this app?”, Are you really sure you want to buy this app?”, “This is your last chance to back out”, It is absolutely ridiculous.

  • Eric

    The Incredible is still INCREDIBLE!!!

    • Anonymous

It’s free too, probably has a lot to do with it.

  • Anonymous

That’s not surprising, especially considering how Wirefly doesn’t sell the iPhone.

Still though, good to see Android continue its domination.

  • DBK

Not surprising seeing as teh torch is the only semi-decent crackberry out there.

    Oh, and first. :P

      Damn, I got ninja’d. :P

      Nevermind…second. :)
