Asus on Jelly Bean Updates: Transformer Pad, Transformer Prime, and Pad Infinity Receiving It in the “Coming Months”

Asus dropped a note into the DL offices this morning to update us on the status of Jelly Bean for their Transformer line of tablets. According to this statement, the Transformer Pad, Transformer Prime, and Pad Infinity will all receive Android 4.1, however, the only time frame they would give us is “in the coming months.” Asus has typically been faster than any other OEM on the planet when it comes to updates, so don’t be surprised if it happens fairly quickly.

Dear valued ASUS customer,

At ASUS, one of the key commitments we make to our customers is a relentless drive to deliver the best user experience. We constantly strive to achieve this goal through our ‘Design Thinking’ philosophy that includes regular software and firmware updates for our products.

We are pleased to announce that many of our tablet products are scheduled to receive an update to Android 4.1, Jelly Bean. The ASUS Transformer Pad, ASUS Transformer Pad Prime and ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity are all scheduled to receive Android 4.1 updates in the coming months. We will provide further guidance on our expected timeframes for these updates near their release.

We are still investigating Jelly Bean updates for other devices, but we are not in a position to confirm whether any other products will be eligible for an update at the moment.

Thank you for your continued support.

We are a little surprised to not see the original Transformer on the list. Asus has said that they are still “investigating” it.

Two weeks no work – on a nice warm beach. Doesn’t matter where, just no work!

Motorola should take a page from Asus’ playbook when it comes to customer care. Asus released a STATEMENT letting it’s customers know that an update was in the works and given their history of updates I have no doubt it will come shortly. The key here is releasing a statement that truthfully states their intentions to update a device and then following through with it. I have no complaints with Asus at all. I have been perfectly pleased with my Transformer Prime and it’s support from day one.
I only wish I could feel the same way about my Bionic that Moto has left to rot on the pile of has been devices. Or, I wish Motorola would just come out and tell me that the Bionic is done. But instead they choose to treat their customers like that fat chick from the bar last night. It was a good arrangement last night (when I was paying for the Bionic) but now they just wish I would go away and stop calling them.
Sorry to use an Asus forum to rant about Motorola but it just shows you how elite Asus is when it comes to support for their devices. Asus is a first class company that makes great stuff.

I just ordered the Infinity and the dock from Office Depot, I’m glad I’m getting Jelly Bean. Asus tends to update quickly, so this is good.

    • michael arazan

Well they do update faster than verizon

      • Allen Byrd

An autistic squirrel could update faster than Verizon.

  • well they say the gnex is getting Jelly Bean and the galaxy 10 is getting ICS all in July…. place your bets if all or any of this happens

  • NYAvsFan

Sigh. No love for TF101. Oh well, getting a Nexus 7 anyway.

    • digitalicecream

I’ll be ROM’s will be out for it long before it’s officially available… I just checked XDA and rom nightlies have already started.

  • BigRed4X15

So I left my Transformer Prime on a plane. I filed a missing item report, and waited a week. I figured it was gone so I went to a bunch of different stores until I finally found an Office Depot with a Nexus 7 and bought it. Now I just got an email from the airline that they found my tablet. So now I have to decide which one I am going to keep and which one I will sell. This announcement makes it that much harder a decision!

    Any opinions?

    • ddevito

      N7 all the way

      • djbool

I’m Commander Sheppard and I approve this message

    • I like the the size of the Prime so i stay with that. But that’s me. I have had a 7 inch tablet and i wanted more for video and book reading.

    • blood

How hard is it to decide? I’ll take the prime any day over the Nexus 7. Look at the specs and which one is better? The Nexus 7 is a good tablet but was only made to be affordable, but since you already have a nice tablet with good specs…

      • BigRed4X15

They have the same specs. Both have 1.3GHz T3, 1GB RAM, and 1280X800 IPS displays.

I have had my N7 for about a week. I can tell you for a lot of task it is nicer to use than the prime. Mainly anything that involves reading, like large articles or a book, are better on the N7. I think were the prime is better is video, some gaming and the keyboard dock. When I have to type a long email, I will pick a physical keyboard over any virtual keyboard.

Gaming is a toss up. Some games I miss the big screen, other games I appreciate having the smaller screen. Games like Angry Birds or The Marbians or Sprinkle are better on the prime, but others like NOVA 3, FF3, and words with friends are better on the N7.

I think in the end I am going to need to tell the wife to shush and keep both!

    • Allen Byrd

Keep both, lol. Now you have the trinity: phone, 7 inch, and 10 inch.

      • BigRed4X15

I will be the envy of nerds everywhere! Now I just need a Q. Is it me or is the Q reminiscent of the death star?

        • Allen Byrd

Haha, yeah. Thanks for pointing that out, I guess it does.
I don’t see much use in the Q, I would mainly use it for music streaming. I have a nice surround sound speaker system, it’d be good for that. The Q is kinda expensive, though. I don’t think it’s worth it until the price drops.

  • AlexKCMO

Is the Transformer Pad the TF101?

    if so, awesome job Asus!

    • No. The Transformer Pad is the TF300.

      • AlexKCMO

Well that’s pretty lame. The upgrade from ICS to JB can’t be that much work. I think the device was released in April, that’s too short of a life.

Guess it’s time to load Cyanogen :-(.

      • Lucky Armpit

Ah, poop. I got excited when I saw “Transformer Pad” but that’s not the TF101. That’s okay, I’m VERY happy with my ICS TF101 and wouldn’t see much benefit from JB anyway. If I had to choose, I’d much rather have JB on my Razr Maxx.

    • daniel

no, is not, that is tf300

    • digitalicecream

the TF101 will have rom’s out for it before you know it. Don’t give up…

      • AlexKCMO

Yep, I agree. I’ve been running stock this whole time.

        • Droid_Junky

TF101 already has an almost complete JB ROM. Just waiting on a few other people to comment about it before I give it a try.

          • AlexKCMO

Nice. Do you have a link? Also, isn’t there a CM9 or AOKP for the TF101? If there is, I’m sure there will be a CM10.

    • mic

people are saying ASUS Germany confirmed TF101 will also get jelly bean. still looking for the quote

      • mic

“Here’s the full statement from their Facebook page (translated via Google):

We need to deny this clear. Colleagues from the
Netherlands have made no statement about TF101/SL101, but merely
confirms that a Jelly Bean TF201/TF300/TF700 update be received. The
converse, that is not TF101/SL101 JB update will be false and pure
speculation. According to current knowledge, and users of older
TF101/SL101 enjoy an Android 4.1 update will come.”

  • Andrew Wegand

My ASUS device already has Jelly Bean, but I don’t have my device it’s out on some UPS truck somewhere!!

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

“In the coming months” = Minimum of 5months “in the coming weeks” = Minimum on 3 months

    • AnotherAndroidKid

With Asus I don’t find that to be fair.

      • agreed….they were the first to push ICS to a tablet.
in my searching around….ICS was pushed to the Prime on January 11th….it was pushed to the wifi Xoom on the 18th of that month. faster than Google themselves 🙂

i expect to see it on these devices by the end of August #fingers crossed.

Amazon just changed my status from shipping in 3 to 4 weeks to will arrive by the 25th of July. Placed the order just a few days ago.

  • I freaking hate the mobile industry. When a new desktop OS comes out I can buy it and put it on my PC that day no matter what hardware I have (as long as there are drivers). When will the mobile industry get to this?

    • You also have to understand that OS’ aren’t optimized for all hardware. You’re not going to install Windows 7 on a machine made to run Windows 95. Eventually you’re going to need to upgrade.

      • I know there are technical limitations sometimes, I was simply stating that I wish the mobile industry would follow the PC industry as far as OS updates go. I wish I could download/buy Android, install it and it would either get the drivers itself (like Windows 7 does) or I could download and install the drivers to get all the hardware working.

        • AlexKCMO

This would be pretty amazing. There’s no reason why the OEM shouldn’t provide drivers for 3 – 4 years.

Oh, that’s right, they need to program their bloatware.

    • ddevito

      Couldn’t agree more.

  • Sweet! I just unboxed my tf300 a few minutes ago and was immediately prompted for an OTA. It said something about the camera. Anyone else know what that was?

    • just some camera fixes….it was rather slow on the older software especially when clicking the little picture to take you to the gallery…that would literally take 10 seconds to open up….the .30 update (which is what i assume that update you are getting is) is much faster in the camera….also smoothed out some other little bugs i noticed.

  • Rob

Awesome, can’t wait to get JB goodness on my Prime. BTW, is the Prime supposed to be on 4.04 or 4.03? I remember hearing they would add face unlock with 4.04 but I never got an update…

    • I seem to remember Asus adding face unlock in their last update (which conincidentally also made my device run like trash). If youve gotten all their updates check in the settings, should be there.

      • Rob

See, I thought I read something about it getting an update to 4.04. When was this? I checked several times for any updates but no dice. The last time I checked was within the last two weeks probably.

Could unlocking my bootloader have something to do with it? I used the official method from Asus, and I know they said it would void the warranty, but I want to ensure I get this update from them!

If something is wrong, I should just root and then throw the Bugless Beast JB ROM on there.

        • unlocking the bootloader “blacklists” your device (per the serial number) to get any warranty work done or OTA’s pushed to your device.
you can always flash the stock OS with a custom recovery. the latest update should be on ASUS’s site.

but yes, you can always flash a custom JB ROM….there really isn’t much of a point to unlocking the bootloader unless you are going to throw a custom ROM on there.

          • Rob

Thanks, looks like I have another project for the weekend.
