Gingerbread Test Build Leaks for HTC Thunderbolt

The posse over at 911 Sniper just made our day by dropping a test build of Gingerbread for the HTC Thunderbolt on us.  We’re downloading it now, will be digging into it, and then sitting tight while devs do work on it to see if this is something that can even be flashed.

The release of this matches up perfectly to the news HTC broke through us back in March that Android 2.3 would be released in Q2 of this year.  In case you didn’t know, Q2 ends June 30, so test builds in the wild definitely mean they are doing their best to meet that timeline.  Stay with us today Tbolt owners, it’s about to get pretty.

Just me, but i think that my tbolt won’t see gingerbread by july.

  • DanSke

Whats the word on power management on Gingerbread for the TBolt? Is it gonna be better? Heres to hoping it utilizes battery consumption and better radio switch off.

     i want those lockscreens! gimmeh!

  • viewthis66

so what will the Tbolt gain with Gingerbread? Is there a Tbolt/Gingerbread spec sheet of sorts floating around?Gingerbread? Is there a Tbolt/Gingerbread spec sheet of sorts floating around?

    • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

My guess it will be mostly performance and battery life. The things that matter. And also some nice little things that Google added in GB, like more robust battery life and memory use reporting.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1639081047 Joseph DiPierno

if i am not mistaken, it is running 2.3.4 and sense 2.1, thats from droid-life tweets

And then it will take Verizon months to release it. So, maybe some time in Q4 we’ll see it.

  • http://profiles.google.com/booboolala2000 Patrick Crumpler

Would be nice to see this push before the end of the month. LOL, not with VZW. Have this and the Charge and giving one of them to my Mother.

What about the original Droid Incredible T______T

OMG! i’m soooo glad i rooted my tbolt recently YAY! GO ME!

  • Bleedtoledo

WWith the new update a few days ago..it is still possible to root my tbolt, correct? (Crosses fingers)

    • O2wastr

I’m wondering the same thing… I think so since you have to flash stuff onto it

      • http://twitter.com/Craigboy Craig Boyte

I just rooted mine yesterday and didn’t have any problems.

    • http://twitter.com/montyboy montyboy

I believe so. I was able to re-root after the update, though I already had engineering firmware image.

  • Dshudson

     I hate my Tbolt.. I wish DX2 was 4G

    • Kevoskee

Why may I ask? It would be nice if the X2 was 4G, but it’s also missing a FFC. The Tegra should be the best Verizon android phone maybe this year. Just wait for that if you hate your phone so much

      • JDub

I think you mean the Targa. We will see if they have actually made the Bionic better.

        • Kevoskee

          Thanks I edited it

So you can double-post a message on the same battery power as posting it only a single time? ;)

  • PSU_DI

I’ve been holding off from rooting but if the devs make a ROM of this, I’ll be rooting today.

    • Anonymous

Its going to be in mary roms by the end of the week

    • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

Don’t forget this is a test build. May have any issues.

  • Jester4281

I hope this comes sooner then the last update and works better. I just got off the phone with VZW who contacted HTC with me for a 10 minute wait to get a HTC rep saying they have not heard of this issue and to try a master reset, if that does not resolve it then its a phone hardware issue. WTF VZW & HTC, I want my flip phones back, the 80′s rocked, less options, less things for providers to screw up (granted, you needed a bag for the battery and it would burn the hair off one side of your head but damn it the phone worked).

    • Coaster36

I didnt mean to like this post. You can easily get a standard flip phone with no cool features if you want. Verizon never made me buy the thunderbolt. Maybe they made you?

Suck it up or get a jitterbug.

      • Jester4281

Flip phone comment was only meant to state we are paying for a service that seems to only have more issues as it gets older, when it should be getting better.
Name one phone, that off the shelf works 100% that never gets returned for manufacture issues or hasn’t had a update make the phone worst, if you can you haven’t used it enough or are grasping at straws.
Industry leading phones, Android, IPhone and BlackBerry all have issues
Android is rarely stock (as providers want to improve it prior to release), providers are slow to release updates and release phones without the latest versions, updates are supposed to fix issues not cause issues.
IPhone, when a manufacture releases a case they hand to end users due to poor antenna design, that’s an issue
Blackberry, what used to be a leader in tech has now trickled down to using android marked for apps and has set the standard for hard reset.
It’s not a matter of suck it up or get a jitterbug, it’s a matter of a controlled system that Verizon is at the top of, that is flawed and yet they take no responsibility for mistakes a system that in years will be locked down so tight that you root your phone and you will be getting a fine from big red and suspended service.

    • Forgeeking

there were no cell phones in the 80′s you n00b.

the thunderbolt rocks, you’re just jelly.

      u mad?

      • Jester4281

not mad, just expect more from two of the industries leaders in cell service and manufacturing.
not “jelly” , as I have a ThunderBolt
and not a n00b, first cell phone was released to the public 1984.

Now waiting for das Bamf 2.0…

  • Rain_king46

Anybody else get frustrated with these manufacturers leaking updates to get us to beta test it for them then not giving us an update path from the leak? /endrant

    • Jester4281

Actually Rain, I think they leak it not to beta test, but to fix, make better and add additional options.

      • Coaster36

        AKA~ beta test

      • nerdkill

what do you think beta testing is?

        • Jester4281

Beta Testing is testing by developer or a controlled test group to provide feedback to the developer for the developer to later release a SOLID, COMPLETED PRODUCT………NOT END USERS GETTING LEAKES, ROOTING, DEVELOPING AND RELEASING THIER VERSION OF A DEVELOPERS PRODUCT TO THE PUBLIC.

The rooting community is not about beta testing, if you think it is you are mistaken. The rooting community is about taking what we are provided it, fixing it and getting it to the end users who what the best options for thier needs.

          • nerdkill

If you think manufacturers don’t release us builds to let a captive audience test for bugs you are mistaken. Just because leaks get modified doesn’t mean anything.   The officially released build will be modified as well.   Manufacturers release builds and then monitor forums to see if anyone is running into bugs, if not they release that build, if they do they modify it.

Additional options? Whatever happened to Vanilla? Thought we all wanted vanilla? If you want changes to Sense, then they should have some sort of skeletal version of Sense for people to play with and see if it needs work, but as for Android, leave it alone. I hope that is not what is holding up the updates.

does this mean we’ll have netflix? has anyone tried the TB with netflix on a gingerbread ROM yet?

    • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

No, there is no connection. Netflix just need to approve TBolt, that’s it.

  • Amd683

    ROM please

  • Anonymous

Well they better hurry – the last firmware update caused all kinds of problems for me and my TBolt. They owe all of us Thunderbolt owners some love. The GPS is still messed up and the camera really isn’t the best. Note: My original Droid took the best pictures ever. The TBolt rocks and can be better with this update so please give me some Gingerbread baby!

i have to disagree. the color quality and picture quality on my tbolt is FAR superior than my OG’s and DX’s.

      • Anonymous

Yeah but the focus is always off – I sometimes have to re-take a shot because of blur. Out doors the color is great. Indoors it is not always the best and one thing I will say my OG Droid could snap a shot in total darkness and the picture would be in focus and colors not bad. The TBolt is nice in that it has an 8MP and the video is cool because you can actually zoom in and out while taking video.

    • awkward

My Tbolt after the update seemed fine. Then a couple days later it restarted 6 times in a hour. Hoping it does fix the restarting issue.

    • Calvin Williams

I won’t even take pictures on my OG Droid because I know it will be a shitty picture. The Thunderbolt has a great camera and I use it very often, even when I have my D7000 with me.
