With Android Nougat Google Introduces Scheduled Maintenance Releases, First Arrives This Fall as a Preview

Buried inside today’s announcement that Android 7.0 Nougat (feature list) was rolling out to Nexus devices, Google also subtly announced that they are introducing a new maintenance release program “over the coming quarters.” This new maintenance schedule will bring “continued refinements and polish” to the platform throughout a year and will be available as a developer preview first, so that those who live on the edge of Android software will be able to test it.  (more…)

  • Telus, My New Favorite Company, Claims Nougat is Coming on August 22

Telus, My New Favorite Company, Claims Nougat is Coming on August 22

According to a software update schedule posted by Telus (very large Canadian telecomm company), Android 7.0, more popularly known as Nougat, will be available starting August 22. Please, excuse me while I furiously check my calendar. Mother of God, that’s next Monday. Have the boys in the lab confirm this!

As listed, the “Android N Update” will be available for the Huawei-made Nexus 6P and LG-made Nexus 5X. While this is by no means a confirmation directly from Google, and even Telus states that these times could be subject to change, we have a hunch that August 22 is spot on. Telus has a decent track record with these things. (more…)

Below, we will highlight a few of the many questions, then provide you with the Android team’s response. Beware, a few of the responses are rather lengthy, but the length helps provide context to the answer. If a topic deserves a bit of personal feedback from our end, you can expect to see that, too.  (more…)

There is More to This Android N DP5 Easter Egg and It Involves Catching Cats (Updated)

Earlier today, the Android N Developer Preview 5 dropped and brought with it a new Easter Egg, if you can call it that. At first glance, we brushed it off as being nothing more than a Nougat colored “N” set atop an emoji line-up that evoked Hodor and his name origin. If you say “No Cat” enough, you can see how that could become “Nou-gat” in the same way (SPOILER ALERT ON GAME OF THRONES) that “hold the door” became “Hodor.” Get it?

Oh, but it appears to be much deeper than that. There may be Pokemon GO-inspired happenings here.  (more…)
