In February of last year, we got our first look at the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, courtesy of @onleaks. This week, it’s that time again. We’re getting our first look at the Pixel 8 Pro, again, courtesy of @onleaks.
In the renders, we can see that there are quite a few changes. The first noticeable change is the camera housing on the backside. Instead of a separation between the camera lenses, Google appears to be placing all three rear cameras under the same piece of glass. We wonder if this will lessen any glass breaking issues? Turning our sights to under the LED flash on the back, there appears to be an additional sensor of some kind, but the report doesn’t detail what it might be. Possibly a depth sensor? Your guess is as good as ours.
- UPDATE: Here is the Pixel 8!
According to the report, it’s noted that the flat display’s size is 6.7″, the same as the Pixel 7 Pro. EDIT: The original report from @onleaks was wrong and said 6.52″. That has been corrected. 6.52 inches that features increasingly rounded corners. The Pixel 7 Pro has a 6.7-inch display, so if these specs are accurate, we’re looking at a display that’s slightly smaller. Overall device dimensions are listed at the following:
- Pixel 7 Pro: 162.9 x 76.6 x 8.9 mm
- Pixel 8 Pro: 162.6×76.5×8.7mm
Needless to say, the Pixel 8 Pro shouldn’t feel much different from the Pixel 7 Pro while in hand. For those concerned, the CAD renders of the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro turned out to be very accurate of what Google released in 2022. Given the history of @onleaks accuracy, it seems like a safe bet that this is indeed what we should expect later this year. Personally, I can dig it.
It’s expected that Google will tease both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro at this year’s Google I/O in May. That’s soon. Last year, Google did a solid little teaser campaign for its Pixel phones and also showcased them at I/O. It would be nice if they did the same in 2023.
Thoughts on these renders?

Update about screen sizes seeming off. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/1cee81d02c5f0769c03d943697688746a8813ab7f8454dd37175f42bd2d85146.jpg
I can dig it. Will I buy it? ????♂️ Depends on what the Pixel Fold does for me…

The design resembles the s23 Plus, that’s fine, and more so with the flat screen, but Google don’t lower the battery capacity, leave the 5000 mAh and put at least a 45-watt charger ☝️
Smaller screen wtf?
I would expect an 8″ screen on an 8 pro
Take a look at that render again, then take a look at the back of the Pixel 7 Pro and then tell me there’s another sensor.
There’s a spectral/flicker sensor in-between the wide and ultrawide on the 7 and 7 Pro and these renders seem like they just relocated it under the flash.
I mean if it works why change it up, the design’s ergo so that’s cool they’re keeping it the same. Do y’all think now OEMs will be going to the 2yr route now? Like if you look at the S23 line they didn’t change much.
I like what I see! the rounded corners on the back give it a nice appeal
Crossing my fingers we actually get a flat screen on the 8 Pro. I’m tired of these curves screens.
Something’s off with the numbers. The dimensions are almost identical but the screen is 2 inches smaller? I dunno. We’ll see.
Yeah I’ve been thinking the same thing ever since I heard about the renders. I believe that the bezels are potentially thicker than what the renders are giving. That’s my only explanation of the dimensions being identical but the screen being .2″ smaller.
Looks like I was right. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/8c04d99e8e51570749bf0854fedb24ebccebe668b2b19626406e53743f68d50b.png
enough with all the cameras on a phone! it makes the phone look ugly not to mention heavy
We’re not going back from that. The phone is the primary camera for everyone
TIL I am not everyone
I care more about what’s inside. I’d really like to see a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 instead of the Tensor garbage but I know that’s a long shot.
Not a long shot, impossible. It will be the G3 Tensor.
Google changes their mind about things all the time so I won’t believe anything for sure until there is more credible information. Tensor chips are trash so I can hope. So a long shot but definitely not impossible.
As long as Google continues with Exynos based chips I’ll stay away from Pixel phones. I’ve had a Google phone (Nexus or Pixel) for 10 years but I’m done because of the Tensor chips.
Same, I’ll be looking to replace my Pixel 5 this year and will likely just go with the base S23 since that’s about the same size and battery life will probably be considerably better then any Tensor-based Pixel they make with a similar battery size.
My wife and son have a Pixel 7 Pro and P7 and they’re just too large and get mediocre battery life while taking forever to charge. Which is why they have those phones and I kept my P5, lol.
At this point I’m leaning towards the S23+ because even with the more energy efficient chip a 3,900mAh battery is just too small. I’d really like to stick with another Pixel to replace my Pixel 5 because I really like the software experience but the Tensor is just too much of a deal breaker.
Meh, the battery could be a 2,000mAH cell, as long as it lasts 6+ hours SoT over a day or so (which from the reviews I’ve seen so far, the base S23 does), that’s all that matters to me. In general, larger variants of phones these days get negligibly better battery life due to the larger screen negating most of the larger battery capacity. Esp. true for the Pixel 6 & 7 where in some tests the smaller phone lasts slightly longer.
But I’m not interested in a phone larger than the Pixel 5 either.
It depends on several variables. If all you are doing is stuff that isn’t battery intensive like web browsing, messaging, email, etc. and you stay on wifi the entire time then sure, you could probably get 6 hours SOT from a 3,900mAh battery with a 1080p screen. Start mixing in streaming video, listening to music, using Bluetooth headphones, making phone calls (yes, some people do still do that), GPS navigation, etc. while only being on mobile data then not a chance. Under those conditions even the Pixel 5, which had a tiny bit bigger battery (4080mAh vs 3900mAh), couldn’t even get close. Mobile data vs wifi is a big part of that since mobile data uses WAY more power than wifi. Most of the battery life reviews you see do their tests on wifi or mostly wifi. As far as I’m concerned any battery life test done on wifi is totally useless.
I get over 6 hours SoT navigating with the screen on and streaming podcasts consistently with my Pixel 5. I took this screenshot after a trip in December, 4 hours of the screen on time were navigating with Waze and listening to podcasts via BT the entire time. Of course this was on cellular the whole time as well (I assume Wifi active means WiFi was just on, not connected, because I wasn’t). I would expect the same from any modern Snapdragon based phone with a similar sized battery and screen. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/606557c0ff8fda9e8741439cebceb8ccec25675c7ac79dc5e4c9ef479f79a462.png
How the hell have you gotten that good on mobile data? I have never gotten even remotely close to that. The best I have ever done on my Pixel 5 while on mobile data the entire time and mixed usage (not even any games) was just under 5 hours SOT and even that wasn’t a full day. It was only about 12 hours. And that was when it was less than a year old. Just streaming video over mobile data with Bluetooth headphones drains the battery almost 30% now. Even when it was new it was almost 20% per hour. And there doesn’t seem to be any bad behaving apps using battery in the background.
What is your secret?
No secrets really.. I have done my best to cap most charges to 80% or so on days I don’t need a full charge to preserve battery health. I also use that Gsam app and Better Battery stats to monitor battery usage for the occasional app/service that uses excessive battery.
I do the same. I try to not charge over 80% (sometimes I have to). I use Gsam and AccuBattery.
That would be nice. But I think that’s a shot we couldn’t hit.
Show me the fold!
We already have renders for the fold though. From both Onleaks and Ian
