Earlier this month, NVIDIA and Plex announced that through an incoming update to version 3.2, the SHIELD Android TV box would have the opportunity to become a Plex Media Server, all but eliminating the need for you to run a PC as your media box. That update, which also includes a number of other noteworthy features, is now available.
According to the release notes, this update builds-in Plex Media Server, so you will be able to use your SHIELD to stream to all of your devices (even outside the home) or “accelerate your media” through SHIELD’s HD transcode. I have not yet updated my SHIELD to 3.2, so I’m still not sure if you need the Plex Media Server app installed. If you do, you can grab it here.
As for the rest of the update, it includes Netflix in HDR, VUDU in 4K, Dolby Atmos surround sound, and YouTube 4K in 60fps. NVIDIA also tossed in accessibility of SHIELD folders from network PCs with drag-and-drop sharing (Settings>Storage & reset>Access SHIELD folders on PC), mounting of a network attached storage device (NAS), an option to turn off your TV when SHIELD goes to sleep, picture improvements to RGB TVs, the latest Android security patch, and more.
Yep, it’s a massive update.

One note on the Plex Media Server. I couldn’t get the sharing to work following the instructions that is on nvidia’s site. Turns out that while Plex Media Server is on the device, it isn’t the most updated Plex Media Server. After upgrading the Plex Media Server software, it had no issues sharing.
While i do like my shield. It hasn’t been the most stable thing esp when i am using it a for cable replacement. Not good when i have people over and apps crash. Waiting this week for sony vue
Vue: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.snei.vue.android&hl=en
Nice. It’s not showing up in the nvidia shield tv playstore though
That’s because it’s a tablet only app. Not for Android TV.
Also, just to let you know. You need to sign up and create profiles on either a PS3/PS4, Roku, or FireTV/TV stick. You can’t use PS Vue on your tablet unless you create a profile on one of those devices above.
Do you know if it’s coming for android tv? I have ps vue on my amazon fire tv already. Was excited to see the shields power running ps vue. It did load as a regular app on the shield tv but doesn’t show on the main menu and looks booty
I was curious “What is Netflix in HDR?” So, I started Googling. It sounds like it is an even better High Dynamic Range 4K standard. But it is dependent on couple of things. You have to have end-to-end HDCP 2.2 compliance and a HDTV that supports HDR. I am not sure if my Onkyo Stereo supports 2.2 or if my 2015 Samsung 4K HDTV supports HDR, so I guess I have more research to do. I love how they keep inventing new standard to spend money keeping up with.
What are the Model’s? I know my new Pioneer VSK-830-k supports 2.2.

Great update. I wish they also put my external HD to sleep when i turn off Shield.
This update is great, but the only other thing I wish they’d add is automatic adjustment for the source’s framerate. I hate that my 24 fps movies on Plex look choppy at 60hz and then if set the output for 24hz, everything else looks worse.
I love my shield, but I still have a wifi bug where it says I’m connected, but nothing loads and I have to restart the device.
so get a different one. not difficult.
Nah.
What I want to know if its bug or defective. You can’t simply return something if it’s not defective.
I wonder if it can play Netflix in 5.1 non-dolby digital plus over hdmi to a non hdcp 2.0 receiver. The Amazon fire tv 4k does this.
In regards to setting up plex on here, do you still need to change the firewall rules? For the life of me I couldn’t get it to work with ATT GigaPower, any thoughts?
If your router supports UPnP then now.
Problem is U-Verse is modem and router in one.
so get ANY other router. not too difficult.
No.
This one I will agree with her on. Wifi routers that are built into modems are the WORST. Buying my own was a great decision.
So I have an Asus Router plugged in directly and running as the router function but I am having an issue with opening the ports on the AT&T box, it was just a whole lot of frustration, I was on the phone with AT&T for hours with no solution.
Doesn’t matter if it supports UPnP, my Verizon FIOS Quantum router is a modem and router in one as well and it works with plex fine.
Through the shield or through a computer? I could not get the application to talk to the outside internet.
Both, but you probably have to forward the port manually then.
Yea that’s what I thought, the route forwarding on the ATT Uverse Modem was confusing. Just want it to work! Big collection and a gigabit internet connection just waiting.
Is Dolby Atmos compatibule with streaming Netflix or VUDU or what you have on your server?
Netflix doesn’t have any movies or shows that support Dolby Atmos yet. Vudu has just a handful, but they’re awesome! Definitely check out Mad Max.
SWEET! Great news! The SHIELD is a great piece of tech that I don’t think I’ll be dying to replace in a year, like I am with most of my other devices that run some flavor of Android.
