Facebook announced this morning that it is ready to give you more control over what shows up your feed on a daily or hourly basis. The social network wants to “show you the stories that matter most,” but because algorithms can only do so much, they want you to fine-tune the whole experience through new News Feed Preferences.
Starting today on iOS, then Android and desktop in who knows how many weeks, you will see a new News Feed Preferences screen that gives you options for prioritizing people to always see first, another two for unfollowing or reconnecting with people, and even one for discovering new pages.
The video below shows you how this simple interface will work, but basically you get screens with your friends or recently unfollowed foes that can be quick tapped for multiple selections. If you prioritize someone, their posts will show up at the top of your feed with little stars next to them as proof that they are a priority.
Of course, Facebook refuses to let you set the option we all want as the default – Recent Posts. For whatever reason, Facebook views algorithms and fine-tuning as king over the simple idea that you may want to read things in order that aren’t randomly at the top of your feed from three days ago.
Again, these new customizable options are available on iOS today. Android users, whatever.

Which is why when my S6 shows up in the mail, I’m going to hunt down the apk to version 9 or 10 of Facebook and just use that like I did with my iPhone. Facebook 10 was the last one with the recent posts for default, and it’s the one I’ll use for the rest of eternity.
the new update blows.
Will there still be a ‘most recent’ option to select manually via the menu screen?
Facebook’s algorithm is total garbage. 90% of my feed is people I don’t really know or talk to liking clickbait articles to posting comments on the walls of people that aren’t even on my friends list (why am I seeing this?). And the actually interesting posgs? Good luck finding them.
I used to love Friendcaster. It was the only way I could stand to look at Facebook from my phone. Between its multiple News Feed categories and ability to “Zip It” for any person or app it actually made it tolerable. But, apparently it seems that Facebook has changed their API’s and shut it out and they have not updated it yet.
I controlled my Facebook feed on my phone a couple of weeks ago by uninstalling the app. Best idea ever.
Is the FB app still a battery killer?
an.droid-life to the top!
Some New Features with droid-life….. Go To Next Page
Facebook needs to just let us have the Recent Posts option. If a person has so many “Friends” that they can’t sort through the mess of posts, then let them use the algorithms instead. Just give us the option!
My Vulgarity below is primarily directed at them basically ignoring Android again. Apologies in advance.
It’s a shame they’ve been killing off the 3rd party app market. Recent posts was the default when retrieving news feed data.
I still use a very old version of Facebook that lets me set Most Recent as default. The only annoyance is that the Play Store constantly tells me I need to update it.
1) If the Facebook app isn’t preinstalled in your phone. then you can take the apk from an app like (apk backup)
2) delete it
3) go to the Play store app > My apps > ALL > slide up and down until you see Facebook app and then press ( x ) next to it.
4) try to install it as that apk, since this app wasn’t downloaded by Play store then the Play Store shouldn’t annoy you.
Hope it helps you
I’ll have to give that a try, thanks.
It looks like this is already available for Desktop, but it limits how many people you can flag as ‘Show First’ (I didn’t count, but it was ~20), so this won’t work as a workaround to their idiotic hide-stuff-at-random algorithms.
Go to News Feed, hover your mouse just to the left of ‘News Feed’ on the left side of the screen, click the Settings icon that appears, click Edit Preferences, click People. On the right side of the dialog that appears, where it says Following for everyone, there’s a Show First option.
Also mobile…
FBPurity and then you can have most recent EVERY time.
Why not just show everything, in chronological order, and let *me* decide who/what to hide? Algorithms or not, I consider hiding posts at random to be a bug, and I have reported it to FB as such numerous times (they ignore bug reports, btw, so doing this doesn’t really help).
Facebook stories are popularity contests. That’s why everything is about “trending.” This is also why I use FBPurity on my desktop and my phone pretty much remains locked in the menu page so I can access “Most Recent.”
Looks like I’ll be sticking with the last version that supported most recent. It’s so long in the tooth but it shows me what I want to see. Ah well. Half-assed olive branch for the endless complaints about Facebook on the Play store. I just don’t understand how a company with so much money can’t get basic stuff right when it comes to the app or the user experience. Enough with the spit shine, enough with the nightly updates. Just put most recents there and be done with it.
What is that last version because i was using version 7 for a while until my Note 4 updated to Lollipop and then version 7 stopped loading photos altogether!
I’m using 7.0.0.26.28 and photos and videos load correctly, you can select Most Recent and it stays that way. Zero issues on this version for me.
Are you on Lollipop?
Are you using the blacked out version?
No. Skipped the update and stayed on KK.
Ah I see… Lucky you man. when i went to LP on my Note 4 i was forced to move to the new version.
At what version did the “most recent” permanent option disappear ?
Also are you able to tag people easily without much issue?
I ask all these questions because i keep having these problems on TW Lollipop
No issues. It’s why I backed up the apk and made a titanium backup. I keep trying the newest versions and they are broken compared to this one for me. This one works without issue for me. Tagging works, photos and videos pop up quickly.
Care to share the apk?
I would be interested in getting the apk as well.
I want Google+ to show most recent post first too! I can’t stand FB. Just my .02
+1 for recent posts. I hate when I see older posts first because of their stupid algorithms, then reply to them not knowing that they are days old and they posted since then with new news.
I want most recent posts, facebook. Why is that so damn hard for you to do?
I don’t care about their stupid algorithms. Let me set my default to most recent, and leave it at that.

I still don’t understand why you’d want a view OTHER than most recent. Why would a “timeline” not be chronological?
Agreed. Can’t tell you how many times my wife has asked me if I saw the post she made on Facebook, and I had to say no because my timeline was not in most recent view. FB decided that my wife’s posts were not relevant enough for me.

That’s why I use the mobile version instead of the app.
This makes Facebook better since I won’t see the “like or get diabetes” posts as often from people I don’t care as much about, but it sucks because if someone has an important message and you don’t really care, you may not see that post!
