After news broke earlier this week that HTC had no intentions to update carrier variants of the One M7, but did plan to update the Google Play Edition of the device, One M7 owners took to the Interwebz to show their disappointment in the news.
Now, HTC may be rethinking its plan, with the company’s product overlord Mo Versi stating on Twitter, “Many of the fixes are already in our current SW (software), but understand your concerns. Stay tuned.”
To us, “stay tuned” means HTC is looking into it, and if possible, they will attempt to bring Android 5.1 to all US carrier variants of the One M7. For owners, this is great news. However, it could be some time before anyone sees the update, if at all.
As a consumer, I must commend HTC’s continued transparency with regard to updating devices. You don’t see this type of commitment to customers from other companies on social media, especially when it comes to Android updates.

This is exactly why I will never buy another “carrier” phone. Nexus, GPE or “pure” editions only from now on. I tell everyone I know to buy based on the presumption that their phones will *never* receive an OS upgrade — and if it does, it should be considered a bonus. This is the worst part of using Android and a huge reason why so much Android software doesn’t follow modern UI conventions. It’s one thing Apple at least gets right. While perhaps not every phone gets 100% of all new features, at least every iPhone that’s 2-3 years old can still run the same code base. And Apple doesn’t differentiate “carrier” phones from non-carrier phones insofar as OS updates.
And just because theres an update doesn’t mean its good. Sometimes updates take a phone that works great on a certain version and turn them to garbage with an update. Only you can’t go back to the previous.

The 5.1 update looks to fix a lot of Lollipop’s ills. A few years back, I went out and bought the Developer’s Edition of the HTC One (M7). Rarely have I felt the Developer’s Edition got any special attention from HTC. Am I willing to throw the carrier edition phones under the bus, in order to get 5.1 OTA on my phone?
Yeah. I confess, I am willing to do that.
They don’t need to do this – the M7 has been out for more than 2 years now. But I hope HTC will get us to 5.1. Otherwise, it’ll be either GPE or Cyanogenmod for me, all the sooner.
That would suck if they didn’t. 5.1 is everything 5.0 should have been.
I don’t think it’s about communicating with customers. Htc just has a closer relationship with the tech community and the sort of devices they produce show this.
They maintain close relationships with many techblogs and keep their eyes and ears close to all that’s said and done on the technosphere!
Samsung, LG and apple do it to a lesser extent also and different ways of varying degrees. Sony I suppose is the oem that keeps itself most isolated from the tech world. To their detriment I hasten to add!
It’s because of carrier control. It’s not on HTCs side that the complexity lies. For Instance, it took over two months for T-Mobile to approve Android 5.0 update after HTC was done with it.
Have to give credit to HTC for listening to their customers. I never had a bad experience when dealing with HTC customer service about my Rezound. It’s good to see they are customer oriented.
Mac . even though David `s posting is really cool… I just received a brand new Jaguar E-type when I got my cheque for $6496 thiss month an would you believe $10,000 this past month . no-doubt about it, this really is the nicest-job Ive had . I started this eight months/ago and pretty much immediately started bringin home more than $86 per-hr . hop over to here Get more information
a two year lifespan on smartphones is ridiculous. it’s safe to assume a 24 month old phone is no longer subsidized, so an unlocked bootloader should be standard after 24 months from the last public sale date of any smartphone. keeping perfectly salvageable smartphones locked 3-4 years after the last sale date is anticonsumer. I upgrade phones every 3-6 months and I hate to say that HTC has let me down every single time.
I absolutely LOVE being free of the carriers now.
Only reason I was able to move off of Verizon was because AT&T bought Cricket, if that didn’t happen I’d still be stuck on Verizon.
Whatever phone I want, whenever I want, and updates from the OEM, carrier unlocked FTW.
Can’t wait for the M10! . . .
I’m looking forward to the M80. I heard that is very explosive!
Ha. You win
It doesn’t really matter and most carriers will not push the update anyway. Even if HTC does send them an update.
Exactly – even if HTC implements each carrier’s specific custom “enhancements” and bloatware, there’s still no guarantee the carrier would even push it out to users. The carriers have way too much control on their versions of Android devices.
It’s all the fault of Google & the OEMs. Apple can keeps the carriers at bay and they should at least be able to jerk T-Mo & Sprint around. If Google & the OEMs had seized the day back when they had the huge advantages of pricing, LTE and large-screens, they could and should have tried to squeeze the carriers a bit more in regards to holding the line on bloatware and assuring timely updates.
I still maintain that Google should have gotten their Android phone/tablet house in order before embarking on distractions like Glass, Auto, Chrome OS etc.
Buy a phone and then have to pay extra for software updates? No, thanks.
I share the same feelings here. Its really sad if HTC decided on not to update M7. And if that’s the case…it’ll definitely have an effect on M9. /billie_powell
Those who buy i things often justify their purchase by absolving, self reasoning or ignoring.
The stability of i devices are significantly overrated because they think it’s not it’s fault even when it is. Ask any i user to see if they have wifi issues. See who they blame. Ask them what they see if apps crash.

I’m glad they don’t offer you an official software unlock. I paid extra to Google for a GPE because I knew it would be a better experience and that money wouldn’t be going directly to my carrier. The carriers are the problem. I already have 5.0.1 on my M7. Had it for months. Paying for extended updates is a bad idea to get started in the consumer world.
I applaud HTC they keep users more informed than any other tech business I come in contact with…for instance trying getting a company like Lenovo to answer you through social media.
They should be, especially on the heating issue of M9. But, yeah! Good job HTC for keeping your patrons well informed. One reason why they’re on top of the list for consumer satisfaction (see ranking http://www.allreport.org/phones/ for example…)
If only they would update the Nexus 9 as well…HTC has been dodging questions about if the n9 will be getting the update.
Because HTC doesn’t update it, Google does.
Yes, but Google has also been silent. Even the official google posts don’t mention the nexus 9 and it is the only device that hasn’t seen the update yet.
No it’s not. Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (2013) haven’t gotten it either.
Tell that to my roommate with both an N4 and N7 that were updated to 5.1 two days ago.
Get your roommate over here!
Google has not provided factory images nor binaries for Android 5.1 for occam (Nexus 4) nor razor(g) (Nexus 7 (2013)). Without either, you do NOT have 5.1. Good day, sir!
Feel free to check the official links

Okay I asked him and they are both running custom roms. So he didn’t get the update. But it’s still pretty ridiculous that neither google nor htc will confirm whether the n9 will be updated when they have confirmed all of the other devices.
Than he must be literally the only person outside of Google to get it on those devices. Go to the Nexus Factory Images page, they aren’t up yet.
You must not go on the custom rom forums. If you would actually read, he downloaded a custom rom, I thought he got the update. Calm down…
On Verizon were still waiting for 5.0 so not going to hold my breath on 5.1
They’re all basically the same phone, so why couldn’t they? /s
Probably carrier specific radios?
Someone didn’t get the M7/M8/M9 sarcasm
Because of sense.
Many of us are running Sense 7 from the leaked M9 build on our M7/M8 devices without a hitch.
So no, not really buying that “It’s Sense” argument. 🙂
Then you don’t know the difference between a port and a rom built for the device. Also sense 7 is not built on 5.1 but 5.0.2
smh…no, in fact, that’s exactly *why* sense isn’t the issue.
Let me explain:
If a version of Sense 7 *built for the M9* can be ported to the M7 and M8 with minimal effort by a couple of guys in their spare time:
No. “because of Sense” is not a valid argument.
(It does not matter in the slightest what version of the OS it was built on – once it is built on a given version, building it with whatever changes need to be made for the other devices is trivial.)
Wow it’s plain you have never done anything like that. The 5.1 update had over 15,000+ code changes. Many things that were built to work with 5.0 are having to be rebuilt to work with 5.1. Before you say it is trivial maybe you should give it a shot and try to do it yourself. It is not as easy as you think.
So you’ve changed your tune, then?
It’s not “because of Sense” as you originally claimed, but rather 5.0.2 to 5.1?
(Again, when they rebuild Sense for one device…it’s rebuilt. it can then be moved to other devices on 5.1 without having “rebuild” everything over again.)
…or are you just totally missing the point? You don’t really think HTC has completely separate code-bases for Sense for each and every device without the majority of code being “shared” between them, do you?
No i am saying that Sense will have to be rebuilt for 5.1. Some code is shared yes but you have very different hardware that you have to deal with. Take the camera as a perfect example. Both cameras are very different on the 3 devices. In the end we will see what happens. Like I said it wont matter to most in the US as they are still on 4.4.3 wihtout any other update from the carrier. So HTC could push the update to the carrier all they want. Doesnt mean it will get to peoples device.
Ah. You are calling the “camera” apps part of “Sense”. I guess I can see that.
That said, the Camera software ported from the M9? Works just peachy on the M8. Pretty sure the 5.1 version would as easily follow suit.
Either way, they will do whatever they want and all our discussion on the matter is pretty pointless. Yay, fun.
I’m currently running Sense 7 on my Droid DNA… so yeah, it’s possible.
They should officially update the M7.
It’s their desire or rather their need for customers to update to their latest product.
BTW, It runs extremely well on the DNA!
Proof… cause you know, naysayers.
The GPE builds don’t necessarily support all the hardware. I don’t believe the IR blaster is supported.
That’s wrong.
