Android 4.4 Being Pushed to AOSP Now, Nexus 5 Factory Image Later Today

You read that title right – Android 4.4 is being pushed to AOSP right now. We typically see Google push source to AOSP shortly after an announcement, so this isn’t necessarily surprising. With that said, this is amazing news for our friends in the ROM game. How long before someone can get us a working build?

The new branches are kitkat-dev and kitkat-release, which is build number KRT16M for the Nexus 5. The binaries and factory image for the Nexus 5 should be available later today as well.

If you were looking for Nexus 4, Nexus 7, or Nexus 10 factory images, you are going to have to wait a few weeks. Those will become available once their 4.4 updates are ready.

    Wait so currently there is no thing for Nexus 4 online yet? I know OTA will take a while, but you cant just download and flash yourself?

    How do I “sell” my unlimited vzw plan? I want T-Mobile. I want this phone.

      Use eBay. Make sure buyer knows its the plan and contract will be theirs including grandfathered data.

      When it eventually sells, you’ll have a bit of work to do.

      If you want to keep your number you MUST follow this exactly.
      1) create new line(s) with Tmo and take whatever default number they give you. Have it all activated, etc.
      2) go home 🙂 seriously do rest from home on phone/pc

      3) call tmo and request the phone number to be moved to them, they will need your vzw account password
      4) once that is initiated and tmo rep says its all good, log into our vzw account online
      5) go to the line you’re transferring there is an option to change phone numbers, do this to get a new number for your existing vzw line

      NOTE: Behind the scenes, your old number is already in transition to tmo while your current vzw line is not defined by a new number. You get to keep yours and when you sell the line, the buyer gets a new number, thus won’t get any of your calls by mistake.

      Once that’s done you can start the process to transfer the lien to another person.

      After completion of eBay sale contact Verizon by phone to initiate the transfer. They will take the information of the buyer and initiate the process. The buyer will then need to call in to verify and complete the process. They will have to be approved for the line with Verizon (may require deposit from them). Once they have accepted the proces, the ENTIRE LINE and its attached phone (be sure to change to different phone or have them add theirs) will now belong to the buyer.

      Any monies you owe Verizon will be billed separately. This would be for any partial month up to the point of the transfer.

      you can now send SMS and MMS from hangouts. no need to use an sms program and hangouts. i will now use hangouts only and not even touch any other sms apps

        But as you said before, this only works if the device you are using is upgraded to kit kat correct?

          no. the update to hangouts will follow shortly. will work on all 4.0+ phones.

    Am I the only one that finds it weird that we can get the apk for hangouts today but google has no plans to release it until later on through the play store?

    Edit: it was fun for a while, but I’m le’tired of it now and just want the latest and greatest to show up OTA and be on with my day 🙂

      Same. I’ve always had to ROM because I’ve always been on Verizon. I haven’t even thought about rooting my Nexus 7 or unlocking the bootloader. I intend to leave the Nexus 5 on stock as well.

      Same. This new update looks good enough that I might just stay stock for awhile. I’d still like to be rooted, but I’m so sick of nightlies and bugs and such just to be on the bleeding edge.

      After a few months I seriously don’t use ChatHeads or PIE anymore. I do enjoy an expanded power menu and better quick controls, but it’s not really worth it anymore. Custom ROMs used to be great for custom kernels and better battery life but that might not be necessary anymore. At 2.3Ghz, do you really need to overclock? The use for a ROM gets less and less obvious as Google catches up.

      Ooh, good point. Should be a system app, so someone should be able to pull it I would imagine.

            no, the apk on the nexus 5 is allegedly coded just to work for on 4.4+..

            we will just have to wait til they push the update of hangouts to the play store which will work on 4.0+. should be a few days to maybe a week or so

    Thus far, I’m thoroughly impressed by what Google’s done with KitKat. They crammed a crazy amount into this release. Thank you Google, please ship my device without delays (fingers crossed).

            4.4 is a bigger update and doesn’t have official Gnex support, so it could take some time.

      That’s what I’ll do with my old GNex. It’s getting 4.4 while I keep my X clean. I was wondering what I would end up doing with it once I finally replaced it. I guess it won’t ever be truly put to rest.

          You should really make the switch to Shiny. If you’re a BB fan, Shiny is perfect for you. Pure AOSP with zero bugs. Even less modified than BB. And Shiny actually gets updated, usually within hours of AOSP getting updated.

          Why would you run any other ROM?

            I used Shiny but didn’t see any difference in battery life between a standard and extended battery. Mods didn’t help either. Been using Liquid and it’s been really good but it’s been randomly rebooting. Tit for Tat I guess but i am switching back so that’s all that counts right?

            Liquid has done a good job so far. I get at least 12 hrs on my extended battery.
