That would be the Android home screen replacement that changes depending on the time of day, your location, and a variety of other factors to present you with a home screen setup that makes your life easier. We took it for a lengthy hands-on that you should probably check out if you haven’t. But what if you like your home screen or 3rd party launcher, yet would like to have a similar experience on say, your lock screen? Enter Cover.
Cover launched this morning as an invite-only lock screen replacement for Android. In a way, it really is like the Aviate of lock screens. Cover works with your location, checks to see if you are driving, or if you watching tonight’s game, and then adjusts to present you with apps you may need quick access to. Are you in a meeting? Here are shortcuts to your calendar and Dropbox apps. Are you chilling on the couch watching NFL on a Sunday morning? Here are your favorite sports and Twitter apps. Did you just plugin headphones? Here are your music apps. Do you want your phone to turn on vibrate while at work and then back to volume-on at home? It can do that too.
With shortcuts set on your Cover lock screen, a simple swipe from the icon to the right access the app. You can peak at apps if you don’t want to fully launch them, but also quickly task switch between others with a hidden navigation bar. Neat idea, right?

I really don’t understand this concept. I mean I understand it but isn’t this why we all use and love android, in that we already have our phones set up the way we like it and need it? I guess I could get on board for ios users but Android? I’m not trying to be a hater but it seems like theyre putting the whole concept of Android in an app. Maybe I’m ignorant to how other people use their phone but I already have my phone set up to do everything these apps offer.

The white phone they have on their sign up page (not the Samsung at the top of the page, scroll down) looks like they took a Nexus 5 and made a few subtle changes in Photoshop. In some pictures they took the buttons off, in others they are still there exactly where they are on the phone.

No. But I’d rather not have that stupid text saying “Slide to Unlock” like its some iOS-aping lockscreen theme from 2009.
Sounds interesting, I’m game. But I don’t think it will be able to overcome the unstoppable force that is a OEM’s android skin.
That right side slide with the apps in it reminds me of ribbons from AOKP.

This is a great idea. I’d love to see Google do something like this with a Google Now interface lockscreen option.
I don’t think Google should do it. Google is giving people the ideas with things like google now. I enjoy that developers can give me something for my phone unlike apple where I would be stuck with anything they made.
Maybe if Google opened up the API for Now, but I can’t see that happening.

Good question. They ask that of you before you’re able to submit a request for the app
According to their website it does still work, you just don’t get the ‘peek’ feature. My guess is either they have the ability to enter it on that screen, or you swype to unlock, which brings you to a second logon screen where you enter your pin (or whatever your security mechanism is).

I’m actually loving Aviate. I was at MetLife Stadium last weekend, it not only figured out that I was there, but it knew where I was sitting too and gave me some info about that section. Pretty crazy.
Dare, I use both this and Aviate and effectively nuke my battery? I think I will!
right there with you… aside from the MetLife Stadium part. The 4square integration of Aviate is pretty awesome. I love walking in to somewhere and having notifications about deals or tips AND having my homescreen shift at the same time.

No thanks. Kind of funny how the community is comprised of people both wanting STOCK ANDROID NEXUS OMG, and then always messing around with home screen replacements and lock screen stuff like this. Am I the only one who wants AOSP and literally leaves it the way it is? Why do people care about Nexus devices when they pretty much want to “skin” everything just like the manufacturers do?

Simply put we like options unlike Isheep who have the same looking phone as every other isheep user no matter the version.
I would like stock android, yes. But until my contract is up, I’m stuck with Samsung TouchWiz. So yeah. Launchers. Every one of them so far has been better than stock TouchWiz.

I did that to my Note 2 and then went back to a TW ROM. Just launcher to replace the looks and debloat and it’s not bad.
I think the idea is that we’d rather have a clean, stock Android, where we can pick and choose how we’d like to customize it, rather than have a skinned version (Touchwiz, Sense, etc.) that we have to somehow disable to get our personal customizations to work exactly as we want. For example, I currently have an S4 Active. I love a couple of the features of TouchWiz, but I hate almost all of the others. Having stock Android, and being able to find something on GP that offers only those couple features without forcing me to take all the others would be perfect.
I don’t think anyone wants stock with no customizations at all… or we’d have iPhones/iPads.

This personally appeals to me more than Activate. I signed up.
Aviate? Yeah seems like a similar feature without have to change from your favorite launcher.
I installed Aviate then rapidly uninstalled it.
I had bad Chameleon flashbacks and never installed it.
Heh… Aviate is actually my DD now.
I’ve installed aviate and using it as DD for weeks. Love the context sensitive environment. Planning to use Cover on top!
The biggest issue I’ve found with Aviate is that I’m a night shift worker, and it seems to have issues learning that.
I have no lockscreen, so Cover is gonna get a pass I think.
I’m just curious what you didn’t like about it. I rather enjoy it, but I can see how its design can be very polarizing and it won’t work for everyone.
