DROID MAXX and ULTRA Ship Dates Bumped Out to August 27 (Updated)

Screen Shot 2013-08-13 at 9.11.22 AM

When Verizon announced their new DROID family of phones back in late July, they set release dates of August 20 for the DROID ULTRA and MAXX, and August 29 for the DROID Mini. Those dates, within the last day or two, changed for the ULTRA and MAXX to August 27.

Verizon hasn’t given reason for the change. It could be that they sold out of their original batch and that early pre-orders will still ship on the 20th, or that the phone has been delayed a week.

We’ll see what we can find out.

Update:  We heard back from Verizon and have good news. The launch date for the DROID ULTRA and MAXX is still August 20. Both devices will be available in stores on that day. If you pre-ordered before today’s shipping date change of August 27, your device will still ship on the original date that it said (likely the 20th) when you ordered it.

Cheers Adam and Rob!

  • Jabberwock

Droid Maxx just arrived on my doorstep!

  • William Wade

MAXX shipped today from Verizon and will be at my door on Tuesday 20th!!!!!!

  • JMac726

Still in-stores on the 20th means I can walk in that day without pre-ordering and get it?

  • David E. Smith

It’s probably too early to know this, but any word on whether these new Droids will have unlocked bootloaders? (I’d assume not, but…)

  • Alexander Garcia

I would get the Maxx over the X simply ’cause of the battery and storage. Yeah… looks aren’t everything. =)

  • tlspatt

Any word on whether there will be dev editions of the MAXX? I remember last year they launched the RAZRs and then a month or two later announced dev editions, much to the chagrin of early adopters. I want one I can root and unlock the bootloader if I’m gonna get f***ed and have to pay full retail just to keep my unlimited data!

    • Justtyn Hutcheson

No word, and with the Moto X getting a Dev version, I’m doubting it very seriously.

    • kixofmyg0t

There will be a dev edition of Ultra. But this time it will be a MAXX.

You didn’t hear that from me.

      • tlspatt

I certainly hope you’re right. Moto could be assured of one sale for sure–I’d pre-order that this afternoon…

    • wilbur

Not true. I at the press conference last year and they handed out Dev editions that day. Before launch. Not after. Anyone caught our guard wasn’t paying attention.

  • Malcolm Love

I’m planning on getting this phone. Android Police posted about a great sale going on these Droids. The Maxx is selling for 200 on contract/upgrade on Wirefly. Being able to snag a MAXX for 200? I don’t see why you would even consider anything else. Especially the X. I don’t know how long this sale is going on. The Ultra is 50 bucks off too, the Mini probably also had a discount but I didn’t bother looking at it. I’m finally gonna let go of my unlimited data. I feel like a piece of my soul is breaking off.

  • boybert

I have the $50 Best Buy rebate offer on a new phone from earlier this year and was kind of hoping to put it towards a Mini, meaning I’d only be out $50 in the end. Anyone know the likelihood of Best Buy getting these phones and/or when they typically start selling then after Verizon does? I’ve never bought a phone from a reseller.

  • Sam

I pre-ordered the MAXX and it still says that mine is shipping on the 20th.

Perhaps, there is a one week delay for people who are ordering it now.

    • LiterofCola

Same boat as you, that’s what I’m thinking as well.

  • TruthHurtsTheIgnorant

These are designed for SHEEP. All you ignorant fur ingesting fools will surely rush to your local store to buy one. You idiots keep us rich really RICH! Keep buying garbage! Your ignorance is BLISS!

  • garrett

maybe that means they’ll actually have time now to send some review units to blogs so we can get an idea of if we’re sure we want them or not. it was getting pretty close, only a week away, and no reviews yet

    • Tyler Durden

      Embargo possibly

      • garrett

is that normal for a flagship line? i cant remember a flasgship that hasnt had early reviews. but i guess you never know with verizon

  • Chris Bailey

Upgrade in hand – Maxx pushed back… Note3 / Nexus 5 (on another carrier) still waiting in the wings. Makes me sad, but I think I’ll need to hold onto this for a bit. Bah.

  • trixnkix637

For anyone still interested in the unicorn that is the VZW HTC One, I’ve found the sign up page for it. http://www.verizonwireless.com/wcms/consumer/devices/htc-one.html

    • Ed Waters

LOL…Read the fine print, they will send information related to LG products.

      • trixnkix637

To add to that if you go through with the sign up you agree to receive info on any VZW products (same as on the Moto X sign up page). Either way, it’s probably the fastest way to find out info directly from VZW about the One.

        • Chris Bailey

Doubtful – I signed up for the Gnex and got an email for it about a week or two after I got the device in store. :)

          • trixnkix637

Well that’s displeasing.. Not that I’m planning to get this anymore anyways.. unless it launches with 4.3 (very doubtful).

          • Chris Bailey

I just read on another forum that the date on the phone in the pic is 9/5 – so MAYBE that’s the day they’ll release it. It is a Thursday, which is usually their release date, so it’s not ‘unpossible’. hahah

          • Appleanche

That’s the same image that EV leaked out a few weeks ago, people were still pegging it on August 1st then… September 5th would be ridiculous, although entirely possible.

          • trixnkix637

This needs to be in a business class somewhere. “How To Piss Off & Alienate Your Customers 101″

    • Tyler Durden

      Honestly…. Too late now.

      • trixnkix637

Very much so.. I can’t think of a bigger blunder regarding a phone’s release.

        • Tyler Durden

I’m sure the 5S will be out before the One at this point.

          • trixnkix637

That’s why I constantly refer to it as a unicorn. As there even been any evidence of it’s physical existence (actual photos of it, not press renders)?

  • TruthHurtsTheIgnorant

Publicity stunt to make people think VZW actually had more than 10 orders for these POS phones. The whole line is complete GARBAGE

    • Lucky Armpit

Sorry, but you’re wrong. Bet that VZW sells more Droids than Moto X phones. “Droid” is much more recognized – whether you like it or not – than just something called “Moto X”. And which do you think is going to get more advertising push? There will be far more Droid commercials on TV than Moto X commercials. And when you come right down to it, the Droid Ultra/Maxx is pretty much the same thing as the Moto X… Active Display, Quick Capture Camera, and Touchless Control… all in a bigger screen, more internal storage (depending on the model of course) for just a few dollars more.

I have nothing against the Moto X, but I feel it will be all but forgotten on Verizon… much like the Galaxy Nexus.

      • Butters619

I agree with most of this except the commercials thing. I guarantee the Moto X will have more commercials. It is Motoroogles baby. Their first flagship. Unified across all carriers. They are going to market the sh*t out of it.

        • Jeff

And Google said they’d spend $500 million on marketing for the moto x…. And we all know they have deep pockets….

    • Tyler Durden

So I guess you’re calling the X garbage as well.

    • LiterofCola

      you’re an idiot

    • Butters619

Yes, best in class battery life is complete garbage.

    • Jeff

You know the two lines are identical other than the casing right? (Oh and don’t forget 0.3″ of screen…)

  • http://friv-2.yepi-yepi.com/ Friv2games

I have waited for it so long. I think I will change my plan

  • Stnkycheezman

Are the ultra’s made in America too?….Taking a Union Break?….oh no wait, they’re in Texas…what could it be???

    • kixofmyg0t

No, Ultra’s are made where every other phone is made. China.

Every part of the phone has suppliers. Those suppliers are contracted to produce the various parts. Samsung makes the display for example. Some of the suppliers like to swap out parts for non approved, cheaper parts. QA/QC catches this, informs the supplier that they have been supplying non authorized parts. A delay then takes place as the supplier has to back fill. Why does that happen? Suppliers trying to scam Moto on parts.

FYI Ultra has been in mass production for about a month now. Hope that helps

  • Stevedub40

Some lat minute bloatware additions I assume.

  • SmokeNMirrors

This is due to the overwhelming demand! They got 11 pre-orders for the 10 units at the warehouse…

    • Godzilla

      LOL

    • Tyler Durden

Still don’t see why people would get the X over the Maxx.

      • htowngtr

Only reason I see is the design factor. Otherwise the rest of the actual tech in the device is much better (battery, storage, wireless charging, screen size).

        • Tyler Durden

Yep. I can deal with a little thickness for a battery that lasts twice as long. And double the storage.

          • Sirx

I’m in your boat, please don’t whack me with the oar.
I am curious to see how well the Droid Maxx handles “always on” voice recognition. I know the X has a special core to handle just that, to conserve battery life, but I don’t think the Maxx can say the same. So will it have the deca-core processor fired up all the time…

          • Tyler Durden

They should all be running the same processors/software.

          • Justtyn Hutcheson

The Maxx is identical on the software/X8 front. So, it will have absolutely ridiculous battery life. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw some people get 3 days of battery under light usage.

          • LiterofCola

The Droids are running the same software and have the same processor as the X

      • kixofmyg0t

Well for me the only reason I went with a MAXX was the battery. I absolutely love X in white.

If it had a battery somewhere in the 2800mAh range I wouldve chosen the X.

      • Sequence of Sound…

the Droid phones look like they have Moto Blur on it. with Motorola being a Google company now, I don’t see why they had to use a different skin. Maybe the Droid line was left to Motorola to create, while the X was heavily influenced by Google. I think the X is a balanced package, while the Droids seem imbalanced and ugly.

        • Mick

All they added that Moto X doesn’t have is Command Center & Droid Zap. Agree that Moto X looks better though. But since it will be in my pocket I’d trade the battery life / storage for looks.

        • Tyler Durden

They are all running the sane software. Blur is dead

        • LiterofCola

Uhhh, they are all running the same UI

    • LiterofCola

Truth hurts that people really are really looking forward to the phones.

  • RoadsterHD1

Is the in-store date still the 20th?

    • Mick

VZW rep told me (via chat) that store release would be “a few days” after ship date

    • LiterofCola

My ship date is still pegged for the 20th, (just checked my order status) but I did preorder on launch day.

    • Jeff

VZW chat told me everything has been pushed back due to demand. Wont be in-store on the 20th.

  • Mike Aurin

If this phone had a 1080p screen it definitely would’ve been my next phone. I really want to give Moto a try again and I know realistically I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference in screen resolution but knowing that Sammy is putting 1080p screens in their devices would always be in the back of my head.

  • Godzilla

    Keep calm……..and Motorola

  • Jordan Webb

Well, damn. I was going to walk into the store and pick one up on the 20th.

    • King Lo

You might still be able to.

      • Jordan Webb

        I will certainly try.

  • Joshua Bailey

    Anyone surprised?

    • Godzilla

nope, that is motorola for you lately. They dont come near any other OEM in terms of sales and what they DO sell they cant keep up with.

      • Joshua Bailey

Referring more to Verizon than Motorola. VZW is a joke when it comes to releasing devices. Coverage is fantastic–device releases a joke.

        • Blue Sun

Correction: “Coverage is fantastic–device releases & device support are a joke.” Otherwise, I totally agree.

        • http://profiles.google.com/gallimichael Michael G. Galli

IDK, T-Mobile is a joke wi/ device launches. Only in “Select” stores for a month or two when premier devices launch, like the Galaxy S4 or HTC One.
Here in L.A. they were “out” but you actually couldn’t walk into a STORE & buy one, online only.

  • T4rd

What about the HTC One and Moto X?

    • Godzilla

I was told HTC One was thursday

      • richkoos

Can we as a DL community flood Verizon’s phones, twitter and buildings(maybe), to get a firm release date for the one and the moto x? Maybe this will make Verizon slip up and tell us the real date.

    • Mick

Had a chat session with VZW rep a short while ago. Claimed Moto X would release at the same time as the Maxx. Also claimed to have no information regarding HTC One (as usual).

  • Godzilla

LOL. Notice how Samsung and other OEM’s dont have this problem?

    • David Wanless

      Samsung Galaxy Nexus

    • kixofmyg0t

      Nexus 4.

      • LiterofCola

        lmao! Welp, that settles that
