Google Play Turns 1, Celebrates With a Bunch of Gifts for You

happy birthday

Google Play is celebrating its first birthday today (or maybe tomorrow), so that can only mean one thing – deals, deals and more deals. In a newly launched landing page created for the occasion, you’ll find discounts on hotels, gift cards, new playable characters in games, free music, movies and TV shows. We’re seeing some Kung Fu Panda and Breaking Bad action, along with music from The Velvet Underground.

It’s hard to imagine that Google Play has been around for a full year already. It seems like just yesterday that we were discussing whether or not this change from “Android Market” to “Google Play” was a good or bad thing. Most of you said, “Meh, I’ll deal with it.” Clearly, we all survived.

Go get some.

    Just change the name back to Android Market. That would be a real gift. {{-_-}}

  • BIG CAT #7

Wow, thanks for the Great offers Google…… WTF?

  • Salvationalizm

Forget these “deals”…the new android humblebundle is out

  • BillySkerry3

its impressive to make more then $7K a month

  • Sock Kitty

I’m reading the Gyft reviews and the most recent ones are hilarious. A lot of guys are getting gift cards for Posh Mommy. Not that it really matters for them because apparently they expire faster than you can spend them.

This app sounds like a pain in the ass.

  • FknTwizted

just to make ya’ll feel better will just call it the “Google market app play store” or “Gmaps” for short ;-)

    • Tim242

      Haha Gmaps it is

  • alexkirkp

Why is the free breaking bad episode $1.99?

    • Tim242

      The gifts start 3/7

      • alexkirkp

I just checked again and it is free now.

        • Tim242

Yeah, I meant 3/6 which was at midnight.

Free Pilot of Breaking Bad is still $1.99, what?

  • EvanTheGamer

    Worst Birthday Celebration EVER!!!!!!

    • Tim242

Stop complaining and get a life.

    • Tim242

Evan, why did you change your posts to guest? Are you ashamed of your nonsense?

  • duke69111

Not trying to be ungrateful but all of that stuff sucks. Come on google.

    • hooligan

How dare you disparage The Velvet Underground

      • duke69111

Good point. What was I thinking…..

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Kursave/837394382 Daniel Kursave

how do i get the 20$ gyft card?

  • Ben

Anyone else notice that they say the pilot episode of Breaking Bad is free… but it’s not?

    • http://chrisbrownweb.com/ Qnowledge (Dominique)

Thought I was the only one. lol

    • snowblind64

It’s free. I just “purchased” it for $0.00.

  • http://twitter.com/fr8cture Eric

1 year later and I don’t care about the name….

  • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

I really dislike these “in app” sale things. I feel very miss led. Its not a sale on the play store, its a sale inside of the apps own market.

Anyways the $20 on Gyft is a joke. never even heard of those sites.
And, to get the $15 on fancy im assuming i must purchase something and then i get it later? Anyone know the cheapest thing on there?

  • Xbdx

    Disgusting gifts. Wtf are those?
Where are the price reduced apps?

  • Adam Marr

Remember when the app deals were really good (25c or free premium games/apps) and not the strange mash-up of discounted in-app purchases, free indie songs, etc that google’s play deals have become? The “days of christmas” deals were a joke. These aren’t any better. I don’t care what they call it, but if your going to advertise big “deals”, hook us up with the gravy.

  • http://www.hammertechnologies.net/ Chase Johnson

lol these gifts suck, oh and bring back the Android Market!

  • Inquizitor

It says the Breaking Bad pilot is free, but I can’t get it without it charging me $2…

    • Buckoman

      Same here.

    • http://twitter.com/kirilv Kiril

I’m pretty sure that this sale is actually tomorrow, so the prices should go into effect then, even though the page is already up.

      • Inquizitor

You’re right! Grabbed it for free today!

  • ChristianJohnson

    Nexus 7 for $99!!

    …one can dream..

    • ßen Murphy

      Cue Aerosmith’s Dream On…..

    • Buckoman

      Too bad it isn’t real…

What I would give to get it at that price… hm…

      • EvanTheGamer

An arm, a leg, and a toe?

        • Buckoman

I need to hold it with two hands, though.

          Maybe my toe :3

      • Akashshr

What you would give eh, How about you give me $180, and I will get it down to 99$ for you! :-|

  • anezarati

i was skeptical at first, but i really like how google play has come along. its pretty polished and useful. like the integration of books, movies, mags, music, etc.

  • http://twitter.com/ITGuy11 Shawn Villaire

1 year later and I still hate the name

    • Michael Quinlan

Same here. But I’m still more frustrated by this “word” “meh”. It’s not a word, never has been, and never will be, as far as I’m concerned.

And now for the inevitable response…

    • EvanTheGamer

Agreed. It’ll ALWAYS be Android Market to me. Android Market is a name you can trust, Play Store is a name…it’s just a dull, forgettable name. But “Android Market” will live on for a thousand more sun sets.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=75200646 Stephen Cox

        So… three more years? Lol

  • nightscout13

Market was still a better name than Play. Especially for newbs, the word play hardly coincides with the word market, or store. When newbs ask my questions about Android, and I try to explain to them “go to Google Play” they open the music player.

    • Tim242

You buy food in a market. Market hardly coincides with what it was/is used for.

      • nightscout13

Really? You don’t buy stuff at the market? You don’t sample stuff at the market?

        • Tim242

Stuff, no. Food, yes. A market is primarily a place to buy food. An app store doesn’t come close to being a market.

          • nightscout13

Aye, Google should have named it App Store, or Google Store. Store would have been a better choice over Market AND Play

          • Tim242

            I totally agree.

          • EvanTheGamer

Totally agree that you’re a n00b? Yeah, I agree, too.

          • Tim242

I’ve been around since the beginning. Take a look at my Disqus profile. The number of posts and likes speaks for itself : )

          • EvanTheGamer

NEVER App Store, you freakin’ nuts? That’s Apple’s thing, and anything that Apple has we don’t want.

            Android Market FTW!

          • nightscout13

As far as i’m concerned, the word APP stands for Application. And this abbreviation has been around long before Apple decided to use it for their store.

          • Tim242

STFU EvanTheGamer. You are a loser that spends too much time in your mother’s basement.

      • EvanTheGamer

Go away you damn dirty troll! Everyone hates you, even your troll dog!

        lol

        • Tim242

          Ahhh, EvanTheGamer, that’s so sweet.

  • masterxchief

I still find myself calling it the market

    • Buckoman

It literally seems like a childish name. I call it the Market, still. I refuse to call it the Play Store. That’s how much I can’t stand it.

      • Tim242

Because market makes so much sense. I shop at the market for food, not apps and games.

        • Buckoman

Market doesn’t sound childish. Even Google Market would have made more sense. Play Store sounds like a Sony-developed gimmick they stick on their PCs.

          Google Store
          GMart
          Google Market

          Google Shop

          Literally anything but Play Store.

          • michael arazan

Could be worse, could be called the Google Bazaar

          • Buckoman

            That just made me shudder.

        • Detonation

A “market” is not just limited to food…

          • Tim242

It is primarily for food. It certainly isn’t a place people go to buy games and other software

          • Weeeee

Clearly you’ve never heard of the stock market.

          • Tim242

You don’t go to the stock market to buy anything. Market as used in stock market is like a money market, or cellular market. That is not the same use as in Super Market. So, yeah.

          • Django

Stock market. But don’t let that keep you from posting in your smug, superior tone all the time, chief.

          • Tim242

You don’t go to the stock market to buy anything. Market as used in stock market is like a money market, or cellular market. That is not the same use as in Super Market.

          • Yikes

Oh, now I see. You just troll. Stock markets do not exist to buy & sell stocks. Gotcha chief.

        • http://www.hammertechnologies.net/ Chase Johnson

Yea because we call go shopping at the Play to get games, movies and books….

          • Tim242

No, you go shopping at the Play Store. Big difference.

          • V

Wow. 37 posts to argue over the damn name. Just how little of a life do you have, Timmy242?

          • Tim242

Why don’t you take a look at the people bit*hing about the name. I am not one of them.

          • EvanTheGamer

            Very little I imagine.

          • Tim242

Get out of your mom’s basement and stop playing games. Then, you might have a life, you loser

          • EvanTheGamer

You’re on a roll buddy, keep it up!

          • http://www.hammertechnologies.net/ Chase Johnson

Except there is no “Store” part of this name…sigh.

        • EvanTheGamer

          T stands for troll.

          • Tim242

If disagreeing with a bunch of whiney bitc*es that come here everyday just to complain, makes me a troll, then so be it : )

        • Toyosup88

          Flea market…

          • Tim242

That is def an example of a non food market. It is the exception, not the norm.

        • http://twitter.com/FusionSaint99 Joseph

It should totally be called the “Google Bazaar”.

    • EvanTheGamer

      ANDROID Market to you buddy.

    • Colt Anderson

same here — it’s just more sensical, especially to someone that’s not a huge android-phile. say what you will about the “appstore”, but at least it’s to the point.
