Wireless Tether Appears to Work on CM7 for the DROIDX

There has been a lot of talk around these parts over the last few weeks that has to do with the wireless tethering situation on Verizon with certain devices like the DROIDX.  We’ve posted work-arounds for whatever block they’ve implemented and complaints have been filed with the FCC, but it looks like all we really needed was a little CyanogenMod 7 to get it going.  According to reader Ryan, he’s had no issues with a tethering block now that he has flashed the new CM7 for DX that we posted yesterday morning.  His proof is above.

To download the latest version (since it has been pulled from the market), head here.

Cheers Ryan!

The newest wireless tether works perfectly on CM7. Seems a lot more responsive than it was on RubixFocused for me.

CyonagenMod 7 has built in wireless and USB tethering, you don’t even need that app.

It’s nice to have it if you just want more stats and UAC controls, but it’s not needed.

Anyone know if I make a backup with clockwork of the rooted .596 gb if I can flash it over CM7 if I decide I don’t like it?  Or will I have to sbf and go through the 2 part update again?

  • tpryor

    If only my gps worked

  • James

Wireless tether (2.0.7) works just fine on gingerbread. I’m running P3Droid’s 2 part update from stock rooted 2.2, however the only way I was able to get past the verizon page was to use the Team Black Hat NVRAM patch. Btw wireless tether is showing up in the android market again so I’m assuming the build.prop was changed/modified. Droid X

damn dude i want to download this but the camera is a deal breaker, im constantly taking pictures of my cat and other cats. :/

    • Matthew

Thats the same for me, but man having tether back might go ahead and make me do it, I have a digital camera for a reason.

    • tpryor

other camera apps work.. camera fx works

Doesn’t the inbuilt Wi-Fi Hotspot app on AOSP 2.2+ work?

  • http://twitter.com/Druuseph Andrew Sileo

CM7 has tethering built into it, I use it on my Inc from time to time. Is it the kernel issue that the DroidX has it or is it only select devices that can do the tethering?

Got CM7 Wifi Tether working great.  Also, in CM7, the “Data Manager Service” and it’s database are missing, which lessens the likelihood of Verizon being able to see a record of your tether use.  (Nice not to have to freeze it) : )

  • Rain_king46

Have they got the camera and GPS  functions to work yet? or are those still broken in the Beta?

    • tpryor

still broke u can get another camera app gps will just have to wait. It gives you driving instuctions though but not turn by turn guidence. so its like what you would get from map quest on your phone. if u can live with that i would go to this rom. its the best one ive used. better than liberty

  • Amenemhat1

I think we just made it easier for VZW to focus their efforts on blocking these services :(

  • DroidRooterX

I’m pretty sure that block is built into the new kernel. But since CM7 uses froyo kernel and is in fact Gingerbread, I’m almost 99% sure thats the culprit here. Thanks for the locked bootloader, moto and verizon respectively! Yay for Froyobread lol! Wireless tether FTW.

    • Jdenman03

Ive got .596 rooted and can tether fine to my computer or XOOM. I don’t understand why some ppl get the block.

      • Anonymous

I don’t know but I’ve got .596 and can’t tether anything.  =(   I connect but get that self provisioning page.

I love this site, but can you please STOP publicizing this? I don’t want Verizon catching on.

Also, it works fine on my DINC and always has. Running CM7 also at the moment.

I’m pretty sure Verizon can tell internally who is tethering and who isn’t. I also am lead to believe that they can tell if you are rooted and everything the “about phone” will tell you basically.

      • Concerned Tetherer

I don’t know if that’s entirely true.  I’ve had a rooted OG replaced by Verizon, as well as the battery because I complained about its putrid performance all under warranty, but I did make sure to return the phone back to stock without root before taking it into a VZW store.

Seriously!  The title should be “All Tethering Apps Not Working, You Win Verizon!”

I don’t understand, this should be a feature that flies low on the radar.  If you know how to do it, great; but don’t put up a new post everytime you have news about tethering.  Any verizon exec with half a brain can type in droid-life.com and figure out what’s working and what isn’t as far as blocking customers from tethering.

  • Starrjosh

I would go with safe bet because it runs off of the 2.2.1 kernel and has to be flashed from there,so from reading his blog the phone thinks its on 2.2.1 but is actually on 2.3.4. Its a work around to get cm7 on the dx

  • WormDoes

Wireless Tether works fine on CM7 for the Thunderbol as wellt. Used it all day yesterday

Those are some crazy download speeds for a basic 3g connection.  Am I missing some tweak in CM7???

    • GotFragz

That is total data not connection speed.

          salesman?  that’s just common sense

Please tell me someone else watches Family Guy besides me.

    • Bhorstmann731

that is not the speed of the download. It is the total amount downloaded in the the session.

  • Anonymous

I’ll be more excited when the camera works.

    • GotFragz

Third party camera apps work, and there should be a fix for the AOSP camera soon.

      • lupo

Camera is working fine with whatever is included in CM7 for me. Only thing not working is the camera button.

  • thesaber2000

I just used wireless tether it works using gpa15 droid 1. I don’ t have the dx so i cant help there. Hope it still works for you guys.

  • FortitudineVincimus

so, the question WHAT is it in CM7 that allows this. Then make that tweak available for rooted users not using CM7.

    • Magnus

I’m going to guess it is something verizon had moto build into gb – and since cm7 has no blur, it works

      • Jdenman03

Not true. I have. 596 fb rooted and it works fine for me. I’ll post a video up of it if nobody believes me.

  • Damagickid

im not sure i tryed this out last night just by chance i was gonna us barnnacle but decided not to….and i was supprised to see it working….i didnt try it with out a password but with a key enabled it worked perfect

I’m running CM7 on my OG Droid and I cannot tether wirelessly.

    • Sjaglh

      even peer to peer?

      • Anonymous

Updated CyanogenMod and it’s working now.  Thanks

    • Anonymous

I’m running CM7 on my OG Droid as well and I have no problem using wireless tether. I am actually posting this using android tether  just to make sure it works.

      • Amenemhat1

Hey what app are u using to tether on the OG Droid? I never tethered, but I want to start on my OG Droid

      • Anonymous

I just updated to version 7.0.3 and now it works.  I don’t know what the problem was.

    • Anonymous

Probably because Gingerbread is unusable on the OG Droid. It probably shut down the tethering service for no reason at all.

      • Crash222

Gingerbread runs fine on the OG. I am running it now withe stock kernal and everything is running nice and snappy. I compared it to the nexus S and I could not tell a difference in speed. Plus the screen on my OG looks nicer too

      • Anonymous

Android 2.3.3 runs perfectly fine on my OG Droid.  I just updated to CM 7.0.3 and now the tethering works fine too.  It’s all about the settings man.
