Verizon Working with HTC on Thunderbolt Reboot Issue

It’s no secret that the Thunderbolt is experiencing “device reset” issues, but we’re happy to report that Verizon has finally acknowledged the issue and is working with HTC to find a solution.  The rebooting of this device has become more than a nuisance at this point, so an acknowledgement is at least a step in the right direction.  I would like to point out that my device was doing this long before the latest update though, and appears to have worsened since the latest update.  Oh, and I should also let you know that I’m still experiencing it even while running this new Gingerbread leak.  Here’s to hoping that it’s only a software issue.

its not the phone per say. its the OS after the update. its not motorola like verizon claims. mine never did it until after the latest update, i have the Droid X with GB OS and now my husbands does it since the latest update last week with his and he has the original droid with froyo OS.  its not only motorola phone doing this.  the commonality for all these phones is the Android OS updates.

I’m sorry, I’ve had the exact same issue with my HTC Incredible and no amount of upgrading or factory resetting has helped it.  I even got a replacement from Verizon and it had the exact same issue.  No more HTC for me!

  • Mine keeps rebooting…  Usually in the middle of a run…

  • Martianspy

I have had reboot issues with two Thunderbolts. I am curious if those with the reboot issue also have the Sirius/XM app. It’s the only 3rd party app that i’ve had that seems to lock up, so I’m wondering if i is contributing to the reboot issue.

I am on my 3rd TB and all 3 have the random reboot issue.  All since May 13th…I was told VZW will buy my TB back for $240.00 and I can get another device.  Maybe the Samsung Charge??

  • Firestormch

I am experiencing reboots all the time. It was randomly occurring before the update and occurs more often since the update… a nuisance. Plus my battery drain has increased.

  • Anonymous

Verizon replaced my thunderbolt, and I honestly havent had a reboot since, perhaps it is hardware related, also seems like my screen is a bit brighter and power button seems to be able to work easier.

    • Jester4281

Have you run the update on the new phone though ?

  • Jester4281

I am trying to figure out something here with the reboot issue and need some input.

Having had the reboot issue and reporting it, VZW swapped my phone out.
Thursday: Received the phone, setup phone, no update, 3G coverage (Upstate NY)
Friday: Recieved the update, ran update no reboots, 4G LTE coverage (Rochester, NY)
Saturday: No reboots, 4G LTE coverage (Rochester, NY)
Sunday: No reboots, 4G LTE coverage until 6pm, lost 4G coverage when leaving Rochester, NY, as soon as I was on 3G coverage my phone began to reboot………………………

Anyone reporting no reboots, are you in a 4G coverage area ?

    • Lee Trowell

I have had reboots on 4G and 3G.  I’ve had them on calls, texting, adding a contact, and in the holster…

  • Kirk shelton

if i buy a Dinc2 next week will it have this update?

Just got my update here in Orange County, California. So far so good.

  • tee

I am still running on stock, basically brand new TB, and it restarts randomly and at daily rate. 🙁

  • tee

How can they let us happen?  Every company knows you have to do a QA testing for atleast several weeks before releasing it to the public.

  • WTam

I hope its gingerbread. The leak is a bit buggy, but very useable. Probably the best radio too. GPA locks quickly, 4g signal is stable and transition to 3g on the soot seemlessly.

  • I have to show my thanks to the writer for rescuing me from this condition. After looking through the world wide web and meeting recommendations that were not powerful, I was thinking my life was over. Being alive devoid of the solutions to the difficulties you’ve sorted out all through the posting is a serious case, as well as the ones that would have badly damaged my career if I hadn’t noticed the blog. Your primary knowledge and kindness in touching almost everything was valuable. I don’t know what I would have done if I hadn’t encountered such a subject like this. I’m able to at this time relish my future. Thanks for your time very much for the expert and sensible guide. I will not be reluctant to recommend your web sites to any person who needs to have guidance on this matter.

co worker has taken her TB into vzw many times since she got it, reboot is one of many issues shes having.  Vzw said they cant do anything because not enough people have complained about it.  today her phone’s clock was showing the time in South Africa…. we’re in northern CA.   I forwarded her this article anyway.

Factory reset fixed my random reboots caused by the ota.

  • johnnstl

I had to re-boot twice as part of the initial update installation but haven’t had a single random reboot (knock on wood), my battery also seems to be lasting longer on 4G LTE now and I have better signal than before the update, though it seems like it doesn’t last as long on 3G.

  • thecrisis

I did a factory reset after receiving the new OTA firmware and have experienced around 2-3 reboots a day.  Bummed.

    • Ncarrier454

      same here

      • Noone74

I got 1 replacement from Verizon and its done it 3 times since I turned it on. I’m just gonna wait for a patch.

    • Whitey064

Same here.  I’m at 5 already today.  Have a new one coming from Verizon.  Should have it tomorrow.  Lets hope it has no problems.

      • Martianspy

I received a replacement this weekend. It has the same reboot issue as the one I sent back. 🙁

  • Desireegwen

I have been having the reboot issue frequently over the past few weeks and a soft and hard reset still didn’t solve the issue.  I ordered a replacement phone but now that I see this is a common issue I’m not sure that it will solve the problem either.  It is good to know that I’m not the only one experiencing this issue.  Praying they figure it out soon!

  • Blkfox01

My phone reboots constantly. Verizon is sending me a new phone, hope the new one doesn’t have the same issues.

  • Jager09

I had zero reboots before the update.  I had perfect and stunning 4G service until the nationwide outage, but when the outage was “fixed” my 4G service, like so many other peoples’, constantly toggled between 4G and nothing.  So I used the LTE On/Off app to switch to 3G until VZW issued a fix.  That got old (wow, is 3G freakin SLOW after being on 4G for a couple of weeks! lol).  So I used the *#*#4636#*#* method to switch to LTE only (which you may also be able to accomplish through the LTE On/Off app, but I never tried it).  I had really good success with that. I had hoped the update would fix the issue with the 4G dropping, but I wasn’t concerned about the reboots because I’d never had that problem. What I noticed is that I had 3 reboots 2 days after I installed the update (when I was in a non-4G area). I initially thought I was going to be cursed with reboots on top of everythign else, but so far it hasn’t happened again. I also switched back to LTE+CDMA/EvDo after the update. It worked well for a few days, but last night I switched back to LTE Only because it started dropping my 4G signal again. 🙁  I haven’t had any problems since switching back to LTE Only.  But god, is this annoying!!  I’ve been a VZW customer for nearly 10 years and this is the only time I’ve ever considered changing carriers.  Unfortunately, VZW has no competition (and they know it) and there’s really nobody to complain to…

  • My phone has been rebooting more frequently every day.  It’s already reboot itself 5 times today.

  • ;-)

I had reboot issues, but those seemed to be related to restoring apps that should not be restored!

DId have it freeze last night on a call, but did not reboot – maybe a bug since the battery was below 20%??
Custom Rooted on a custom ROM but otherwise no random restarts yet… was happening about every 24 hours +/- 2 hours I have gone 40+ hours without a reboot… Don’t think it’s hardware for me anyway or the new radio.

  • Marcusrussell547

My thunderbolt never reset on me and i got the system update on it. The only thing i ever notice is mine froze on me one time it might be all yall rooted people who have the problem.

  • I think by “partnered up” they mean “HTC is doing the work, we’ll add our bloatware when they’re done.”

  •  Received update, battery and GPS still not right. GPS could not even find my location, battery last 3 to 4 hrs on 4 G, 8 to 9 on 3 G Everything else works fine. Stock T bolt

  • FortitudineVincimus

to think.. I almost talked my chick into getting this phone SO glad I did not.

  • Starr167

I have the Droid X and it randomly reboots its self too. Does anyone else have this issue?
The Verizon Rep at the store said it was a Motorola issue.I was on the call onetime it rebooted and also when i plugged it in to charge it.Its not a smartphone if it reboots for no reason!

    • Boogie37b

This happened to my husband phone.  Verizon replaced it 3x with a new X.  The last one worked finally.  Verizon stated it was a issue with Motorola phones.

      • Starr167

Thanks, I will call them ans ask for a replacement again. 2nd phone i had replaced.

  • I haven’t had one single reboot, before or after flashing the new radio and custom roms. *crosses fingers*

  • Jester4281

I just recieved today, my ThunderBolt replacement phone due to VZW and HTC playing ignorant regarding this topic.
I am assuming they are no longer pushing this update out to end users correct ?

    • Aaa

Maybe. I still haven’t had the option to update mine.

  • cm22

I only had reboot issues once, and out was while using gtunes..

  • Booboolala2000

It’s in my backpack. Been using the Charge and am more than Happy. The random reboots on that are ridiculous. Have only have a couple so far on the Charge. I think it’s a hardware issue unfortunately. I think blackmanx might have earned us about this in his tweets. I could be wrong though.

  • Djfan8812

i have not even gotten the update yet.. i cant get it to download on my device… and verizon says i have to wait till its pushed out to my phone..

    • Chris Moore

I had the same issue, to get the update use lte on off or a similar app and switch your network prefrence to cdma only and then check for the update you should get it. I had to get it wile on 1X and it took about 20 minutes to download.

  • Csaddis

Mucho issues with gps and battery, on stock build, but not a single reboot since day 1 purchase of tbolt.

  • DailyRunner

I did not have any reboots until I downloaded and installed the update from verizon, Since installing the update, I have had several. Some occurred while I was using the phone, others while not using the phone, The latest was just about an hour ago. The phone was sitting on my desk and just rebooted! Between this and the horrible battery life (I purchased the 1700 mah battery) I’m not thrilled with the phone. Turning off WI-FI, GPS and 4G has helped with the battery life, but why must I shut things off I purchased the phone for in order to get through a day with the battery?

    • Aratheff

I too never had a reboot prior to the verizon update. And since I can come up with no consistent timing or reason. I am running stock, but I too have not had great battery life not not sure what the issue is but does not sound good that GB does not help these issues.

  • pitchblack86

Owned for 21 days. Never a single reboot. Whether it was completely stock with no root, rooted, Bamf remix 1.6-1.6.3, or the gingerbread leak. Guess I’m lucky. But all 12 people I know locally with this phone aren’t getting any reboots either….

  • awkward

Had maybe 2 reboots that may have been apps before the update. The day after the update I had 6 reboots within an hour and two others later that day. Haven’t had one since then but man, wtf?

  • Anonymous

Glad i got the Incredible 2 and not the TB =)

  • Ellis90009

If your phone has been doing that since day one and continues to do so after the GB update you should go back to stock and return the phone because I never had a problem with it till after the update and I started running the GB build on day 1 and have no problems with rebooting

  • Interstellarmind

i’m still getting a “download failed” error when trying to do the update. should i just consider myself lucky?

  • sfwpac

Mine has been rebooting randomly since I got it back in March.  It has been worse, rebooting multiple times per day since the last “fix” this week.

  • Robinlullheartfire

     If this helps:
I am running Version 2.2.1 and mine has only rebooted about twice, and luckily, not while I was doing much on it. But I must say, being an old computer builder, used to seeing machines reboot from memory saturation, I figured I’d install a task killer ap, just to keep it running smooth. Since using “Advanced Task Killer” I haven’t noticed any reboots, so it may be memory related with possibly having too many aps going?.. Just a shot at the issue, and I hope this can help solve things. Meanwhile, I am enjoying my Thunderbolt a lot~
    Cheers,
    -R-

    • Robinlullheartfire

I will also just be happy when the doggon NETFLIX ap actually WORKS.. I was really looking forward to it when I bought our new droid phones, and don’t understand whats going on with it..

  • Jap

It’s a shame that the consumers have to alway hold the shitty end of the stick. Verizon is hiding behind HTC and vice versa cuz no one wants to step up. Verizon continue to treat their loyal customer like crap and it’s very frustrating.  Most TB owners have been plagued with this rebooting issue since that so-called update (GPS still not accurate) and the complaints have been all over the WWW and yt Verizon’s support teams claim to have no idea this is going on.  I thought the customers came first, but this is ridiculous.

  • Sledgeyj

My phone had zero reboot issues until the reboot, now, non stop, 10x a day.   Called verizon yesterday and they took that standard line that “no one there has heard of that problem”.  Perhaps I was the first to call and tell them yesterday, lol.  They are replacing my phone, though I have little faith that will help.

  • Leo J.

Mine hasn’t rebooted, not even once, but I’m having issue with my GPS though…

    • NikonD300

NO reboots and no GPS problems after a month.

  • My Thunderbolt doesn’t reboot, but every few days it will lose connectivity but keep indicating that it is on LTE.  Once I notice that I haven’t gotten any email in a while I know it’s time to reboot.

    • Jester4281

My Thunderbolt was doing this as well, VZW sent me off to HTC and HTC stated it was a bad SD card. I was able to get VZW to foot the bill on a new SD card, as they had already swapped my phone out with a new one before they realized it was a bad SD card.
While having this problem I just placed the Mobile data toggle on my desktop and when I wasnt getting data I would turn the widget off, then on and i was good to go, no reboot required.

    This just makes me think-
Thank you OG Droid for satisfying my android cravings with delicious vanilla flavor.

    • Yes thank you OG Droid for the goofy and useless physical keyboard that I never use.  Other than that extreme annoyance, it works great for a phone that has been on the market for 2+ years.

      • Anonymous

LOL!  I don’t use the keyboard either. Got FlexT9 from Amazon for free the other day and haven’t looked back.

  • So if it is a hardware issue and not a software issue, are you going to take HTC & Verizon to task for inadequate QA testing on these devices?

You are quick to toss Samsung & LG under the bus, but what about HTC, Motorola or Verizon?

  • Anonymous

Mines reboot like once a day

  • Stock with the latest update and only had a random reboot when connected to a PC in charging only mode (which I rarely do). Might do that this afternoon at my desk and see if it reboots again.

  • Anonymous

I have not had any random reboots either on original radio or the leaked radio from a few weeks ago. It is amazing to see how many people do have problems though. I am very surprised to hear that Verizon has acknowledged any issues at all. I really believe that the 800 number or even store reps are trained to always say that they have not heard of any issues…. lol  It’s funny how they never hear of any problems whatsoever 🙂

  • Anonymous

Mine was fine before the update. Rebooted after. Gingerbread appears fine for me

Kellex you might want to get another phone

  • Jrer34

I have not had issues with this on my TB but the GPS hardly works at all. They really got us by charging so much for a phone that clearly has quite a few issues. Does anyone know if Best Buy will exchange the phone (with their $10 a month policy) because of scratches and kickstand peeling? I also get this spot that shows up every now and then in the middle of my screen. It looks like an air bubble or something.

    • Anonymous

If you bought the black tie protection they will just take it and fix whatever hardware is broken (screen or other component) but they will not fix cosemtic issues (scratches, etc), and it will likely take almost 30 days to repair, during which time you will have to deposit $150 for a loaner phone… better off just calling verizon and seeing if they will switch it out..

  • The weird thing is that my Thunderbolt does not have the reboot issue.  I wonder if it is some sort of app problem.

    • Muddy B00ts

When I tried the leaked radio, I had crazy reboots.  Like 5 a day.  Went back to stock radio and am running tesla coil 1.7.1 and I haven’t had a single reboot yet.

    • Robinlullheartfire

       Supports my hunch as well…

    • Anonymous

Same here, before the update I had maybe one reboot; I think I blamed it on an app because it wasn’t consistent. After the update, no reboots at all.

    • Anonymous

No reboot issues for me either. What if its hardware related? Ouch Charlie

    • Tgfree

Neither does mine. I got mine the first week they were available…wonder if it is hardware related where its only having effect on newer devices due to some internal change….hmmmm

      • Ace87

I got mine the first day it came out and am having random reboot issues

    • Michael Parker42

I’ve only had 1 random reboot since I got my tbolt a month ago,  and got the OTA update the day it came out.   However…  I did have a problem sending/receiving MMS messages after the update.  After an hour on the phone with Verizon,  they had me reset my phone to factory defaults…. ever since I have had no problems at all.    Seems that people in other forums are also reporting that a factory reset after the OTA update solves most of their problems.  I would definitely try it if having so much trouble….. even though it’s annoying to have to reconfigure everything.

      • Jager09

I also had MMS message issues after the update, but a manual reboot fixed it for me, so I never called tech support or took it in to a store.  No MMS errors since then.

        • Jager09

And by “manul reboot” I simply mean I turned it off, then turned it back on.  No battery pull, no factory reset.

    • Marcusrussell547

I was wondering to cause the only problem i had was the gps used to take long as shit then i got the system update and its all good now

Luckily have not had this happen to my TB, however I have noticed that since the update it seems to freeze up on the boot animation making quick boot not so quick

  • I had a couple of random reboots while it sat on my desk not touching it, and once playing angry birds.  But yesterday was my first “bad” experience.  I had a 15 minute conference call I dropped twice because of it rebooting while on the call.  On the second reboot I gave up and rescheduled… I don’t recall ever being that pissed at a phone lol.  My phone is completely stock with no bad apps, no reason for this.

only time my device rebooted was on the ota baseband, if you flash the older baseband your golden. as of right now im on the gingerbread leak and my phone does not reboot.

I see a lot of complaints about the Tbolt yet it seems to be the 4G phone to have based upon current lineup.  Is this phone worth getting or should I stick with a 3G phone?  I don’t currently have a smartphone.

    • Anonymous

I love the phone and have no issues at all. Verizon had some 4g issues a while back but they seem to have fixed them. If you go to any phone site you will see people complaining about something. While I am sure there are plenty of legitimate issues, there are also a great deal of people that have no clue what they are doing. If you don’t have a smartphone now there will be a bit of a learning curve but I bet you would love the phone. Go check one out and see if it is right for you.

No problem with my phone.  Bought it when it first came out, not rooted, lots of apps installed, but nothing “dodgy”.  I got the update last week and haven’t had a problem or unexpected reboots.

I called VZW Support yesterday just to complain and the tech said they had no idea this was happening….

    LIES I TELL YOU!!!

Yay! Now they’ll just crank up the default CPU voltages and most people will get even worse battery life.

  • I’ve had the update since release with no reboot issues.

      • LionStone

Running stock, had one reboot after the update and none since, BUT my gps is jacked…navigation is inaccurate, latitude and maps don’t know where I am…sucks! Need gps to work like my Incredible…flawlessly!! Went to Verizon, dumb rep thought he was helping and “updated” My Verizon app so that broke and had to uninstall and get the download again. Basically they pushed me towards HTC to get the gps fixed. Argh!

        • LionStone

Oh finally! Got gps fix! Good again… Sent a couple reports to Google, maybe that took care of it…
When the your location is off a certain amount of meters in maps, it gives you an option to “send report” to google…so try that if your gps is off.
