How to: Get Rooted Gingerbread on DROID X

As many of you know by now, Gingerbread for the DROID X and 2 was released over the weekend giving all of us a taste of Android 2.3.3 and the new blue Blur from Motorola, only there was one thing missing.  Root access.  Well, that problem has now been fixed by our friends over at My Droid World, and we’ve got full instructions for you after the break if you jumped on GB early.  Yep, we walk you through every single step including flashing an SBF file which is something you won’t find anywhere else.

In these instructions, you are essentially reverting back down to Blur build 2.3.340 and then re-upgrading to rooted Gingerbread.  The process looks intense, but again, we outlined every step to help you get there.

Instructions for DROIDX:

*WARNING* – You will lose everything on your phone by following the process.  This wipes it all people.

*WARNING 2* – This is NOT for the DROID 2. Those instructions can be found here.

*Note* - If you didn’t jump the gun and flash the non-rooted version and are still running something like say, Liberty ROM, all you have to do is flash the .zip file below just as you would any other ROM.

Download:  dxgbrooted.zip

*Note Again* – If you have not already upgraded to Gingerbread, simply download the .zip file, flash it like you normally would a ROM, and ignore this entire process.

1.  Download the file from above and drop it on your SD card.
2.  Download the 2.3.340 SBF file for the DX. [Here]
3.  Download,  install and open RSD lite 4.8. [Here]
4.  Plug your phone into your Windows PC and turn your phone off.
5.  Boot into the bootloader by holding Volume Up + Camera + Power.
6.  Your computer will likely install new drivers at this point.
7.  Once RSD lite recognizes your phone, hit the “…” box and choose the 2.3.340 SBF file.
8.  Click “Start.”
9.  When it finishes and gets to 100%, power your phone off.
10.  Boot into recovery by holding Home + Power.
11.  When the triangle appears, hit the Search button.
12.  Navigate down to wipe data/factory reset, select it with camera, say “yes.”
13.  When it finishes, reboot your phone.
14.  Download z4root 1.3.0 and root your phone.
15.  Download DX Bootstrap and bootstrap your recovery.
16.  Reboot into recovery.
17.  Choose “install zip from sd card”, “choose”, then the dxgbrooted.zip.
18.  Your phone will now install Gingerbread with root.
19.  When you reboot, your phone will appear to bootloop.  Let it.
20.  If it does it for say, 5 minutes, just pull your battery and reboot.
21.  To Boostrap after installing Gingerbread, you’ll need to use the D2 Bootstrapper.
22.  Enjoy!

Full support can be found at My Droid World.

RSD Lite does not seem to be recognizing my phone (Step 7). I’m in bootloader and my computer downloaded the drivers but nothing is showing up under device properties in RSD. Obviously a noob. Any suggestions/ideas?

    • Mr Corder

UPDATE: Day two working great. Had some issues with what appeared to be compatibility with AVG and AppsOrganizer. Other than that it loads supper quick and runs fast.

      Thank You!

anyone having problems with wifi tethering after this gingerbreaed build

  • PattyOMalley

So I flashed the rooted Gingerbread file fine, but since then I’ve been having some issues. My Droid X boots up fine, but when I lock the screen and try to unlock it the unlock screen doesn’t come up and I have to do a battery pull. My Droid X has also been slower than it was on 2.2 with a Quadrant score of about 1180, and when ever I try to access anything on my SD card it freezes. Anyone know what I did wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

    • tiberiumdj

jump into recovery wipe cache and wipe data

      • PattyOMalley

Thanks that worked well, until I connected my Droid to my Macbook. Apparently this update doesn’t play well with Mac OS X as my phone has acted the same way since I connected it. Guess it’s another wipe. I might even flash the SBF file and go back to 2.2 just to have something stable again.

  • Anonymous

I flashed the dxgbrooted.zip and now it’s boot looping but showing hte rubix animation still. I did a battery pull twice. I tried to do a factory reset, however, when the triangle comes up, I hit the search hard key and nothing happens…

    PLEASE HELP.

    • tiberiumdj

      I do think your bricked;

      1. Hold down power and home.
      2. When you see the triangle hold down both volume buttons

give that a try, you might need to RSD back to 2.3.340 because you did not wipe data

      • tiberiumdj

lol, I just read my post again, the do should be do not :/ sorry.

    • tiberiumdj

  • Calbear

works like a charm. might want to add, that incase your dumb enough like me to unroot through z4root while already on rooted gingerbread, that its safe to sbf back to stock 2.2.340 through rsdlite 4.9. somehow d2bootstrap clockwork mod would still work, despite no root access (after i had allowed already allowed superuser rights, i unrooted). clockworkmod worked, not through bootstrapping through the app but through powering off and powering on/or pulling battery.
-i found that time/date stamps if battery is pulled is changed if you do a backup through clockworkmod, just want to put this out there

Now have a problem with tethering. When I try to tether to my xoom or any other device it won’t connect and Verizon’s mobile hot spot keeps interfereing. Anyone else having similar issues?

    • tiberiumdj

you can download the TeamBlackHat patch for the 3g hot spot its working great.

I’m sure this topic has been covered plenty of times, but I need some help. Trying to get RSD lite to recognize my phone, but not working at all. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Dcallagh

Please don’t hate, but is there any way to do this with the mac? RSD lite 4.8 obviously won’t install on os X, is there another substitute?

    • tiberiumdj

call a friend that has a windows comp.

  • Duckpsp3000

Ok this is what happened to my droid x I rebooted into recovery o deleted the cache and installed the zip and then I rebooted the fone and now it just keeps boot looping the liberty logo what did I do wrong

    • tiberiumdj

you deleted the cache but didn’t wipe data and factory reset.

Thats why you liberty stuff is still there

      • Duckpsp3000

How can I fix that then?

        • tiberiumdj

reboot into recovery wipe data/factory reset reboot and see if the GB update took.

          • Duckpsp3000

I pressed the power and home button but all I got was the triangle with and exclamation mark inside of it

          • tiberiumdj

            1. Turn your phone off.
            2. Hold down “Home” and press “Power” until the Motorola logo appears.
            3. Release ”Power” and continue to hold “Home” until an exclamation appears.
            4. Release “Home” and press the “Search” button once.
            5. Your phone will now enter recovery.

          • Duckpsp3000

I did that and it just stays in the triangle screen even after I hit the search button nothing happens

          • tiberiumdj

try a battery pull and do it again.

how far do you get if you just let it boot

          • Duckpsp3000

I got it to let me restore it by clicking the volume rocker not the search button…thanks for all the helping thought I had bricked my fone for a while lol

          • tiberiumdj

no problem, its really hard to brick your phone though.

  • Jerseyguyvero

How do u open the rsd lite msi file …I cant run that program…HELP?????

    • Mr Corder

      You double click on it

  • nessa23

Just to be clear before I do this. I am running 2.3.340 on rooted Droid X (z4root). I did not flash to original Gingerbread leak. Do I just do a factory reset, then install the zip to SD?

    • nessa23

couldn’t wait, followed instructions here: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-x-roms/136891-official-thread-gingerbread-leak-root-get-now.html

I had not used Bootstrap before, easy to download, easy to use. FYI for all noobs. Use volume controls for up and down, camera for enter while in bootstrap (reboot recovery mode).

Everything seems to have gone fine. 3 minutes for entire process, got the red M on reboot, no need to battery pull. I appear to Gingerbread! I’m initiating set up now. I didn’t even have to pull the battery.

      Super Smiley Face

  • Sdfsf

tried to SBF. On droid x. SBFing back to stock 2.3.340.. It failed at 97% when loading RAM downloader for bootloader. Then my bootloader said “corrupt code”. It’s in progress of sbfing again. What do I do if this happens again? And it keeps failing at the same place? On win 7, 64 bit. Rebooted. Tried on a 32 bit win 7 but the drivers wont install and rsd won’t recognize it. help!

    • tiberiumdj

Make sure your running RDS as admin, it sounds like you may have a bad 2.3.340 SBF file, have you downloaded it again and tried that? Check your SBF file size should be 434.95 MB

  • Duckpsp3000

so if i’m running liberty 1.5 all i got to do is steps 16 and down??

    • Filmmakertony

You’ll want to wipe and factory reset before you install the zip. I made the mistake of not doing that.

      • Duckpsp3000

and if i didnt do that what would happen

  • http://profiles.google.com/filmmakertony Anthony Cox

I tried the easy way because I was running Liberty, but I didn’t wipe before installing .zip. Wouldn’t boot up. Can’t boot into recovery. Now even after SBF flash, gets stuck on Liberty boot screen. WTF?

    • http://profiles.google.com/filmmakertony Anthony Cox

I figured it out why I couldn’t boot into recovery thanks to the My Droid World forums. I apparently forgot I needed to press the Search key after booting while pressing the home key. Stupid me.

  • JayC

Can we flash or SBF back to 2.2.1? WirelessTether does not work on this. Brings up the acknowledgement page for Verizon.

blue triangle icon – cant activate phone after updating?// wtf

    • madhatter

      I can’t activate either

      • tiberiumdj

Did you both need to go back to 2.3.340 or were you just installing the GB?

When you RDS back to 2.3.40 (stock) it usually ask you to reactivate, you can skip it with the 4 corner trick, press (starting top left corner) and follow right to each other corner.

If your still having activation issues just use RDS and flash back to stock. (start at step 1)

  • Amcmearty

hey guys i accidentally dowloaded both drivers but only needed the 32bit so i put my 64 into my trash bin because it wouldnt uninstall and whatever…but yeah when i run rsd light my device doesnt show up after im in boot mode…my phone itself says

Im new to this my pc is messed up is there anyway I can dowload this directly to my droid x rooted and overclocked?

    • tiberiumdj

if you just need the .zip file you can download the TeamBlackHat app from the market, it supports the devs and you have access to download any of their new stuff right away

  • Chrono735

So I took the plunge from Liberty 1.5 to flashing GB root without a hitch- awesome. So here’s a few things that I’ve been experiencing after restarting the phone:

The phone boots fine (gets through the red Moto logo and Droid Eye just fine), but when the phone starts up, my 3 homescreens take FOREVER to load. I’m using ADW EX. I get a FC prompt during the first minute of starting up asking if I want to wait or force close ADW EX. I choose to FC because waiting seems to prolong startup. Swiping from screen to screen is super laggy.

Also, I have four Quick Access widgets on one homescreen that are assigned to contacts. During this startup process, they do not load properly and are replaced by four of the new GB loading/spinners.

Certain apps aren’t available either- iheartradio and .podkast. And to top it off, it spikes my battery temp up to 107F as opposed to my usual 86F-90F.

Sooooo… after forceclosing ADW EX and waiting a good 10-15min. ADW EX restarts and everything seems to run fine and seems to be crisper than when I used to run Liberty 1.5. I’ve gotta replace the four Quick Access widgets but that’s no biggie.

So could it be ADW EX that’s causing the super-slow startup? I’m sure this will all be figured out when the official VZW Gingerbread comes out but any insight on this issue would be awesome =)

    • tiberiumdj

it sounds like you have a lot of things being reloaded to your phone, apps, ect.

Might get better once everything is restored, if not you may need to just do a factory reset, wipe date.

      • Chrono735

Sweet thanks for the response. So do you mean to reset/wipe through bootloader?

      • Ldavis85086

        Yes, I did the z4root

        • tiberiumdj

          • Ldavis85086

I did not do the last step:
            21. To Boostrap after installing Gingerbread, you’ll need to use the D2 Bootstrapper.

you can try a data wipe, factory reset, re-root and attempt to install from bootstrap again. If you downloaded from the same mirror twice, I would try a different mirror, it still sounds like your .ZIP is a bad file.

          • StanleySpadowski

You don’t by chance have a link to another mirror?

          • StanleySpadowski

So while I was sitting at work I decided to load the liberty 1.5 rom (first time to mess with roms). It got stock on the boot screen. I probably did 10 resets and nothing. When I got home I dl the gb.zip from here again and put it on the sd card just because. Went back to trying to get my phone to boot and nothing. Finally I said f it, whats it going to hurt to try the gb.zip again at this point (thinking I killed it and would have to buy another phone anyway) so I did it and it went through and booted up. I’m afraid to do anything to it now. haha

  • Lilsoccakid724

Praying someone will make a video walk through for this. Now im scared my phone is stuck at 2.3.3 unrooted!

    • tiberiumdj

its not stuck, if you have never used RSD it takes a little while your first time buts its really a simple process.

  • http://twitter.com/STEV3TS Steven D

RSD fails to flash the sbf file in less then a sec? any way to get to to work. all drivers are updated. RSD 4.9 and it still fails. wish there was a video walkthrough for this.

    • http://twitter.com/STEV3TS Steven D

and my system version is already 2.3.340 so do i need to go through that?

      • tiberiumdj

No if your running 2.3.340 already then you just need to root, and flash the GB .ZIP file

        • http://twitter.com/STEV3TS Steven D

          nice thanks so much

        • StanleySpadowski

How do you flash the GB.zip? I already did the z4root and I am running 2.3.340 and android version 2.2.1

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jose-Luis-Nava/100001331342450 Jose Luis Nava

It wont let me install the drivers for my droid to run RSD lite

  • TanookiTravis

So I made the upgrade and I have 2.3.3 on my Droid X. I’m running LauncherPro, not sure if that matters, and I have the data-syncing icon on the notification bar at all times. Is that icon always going to be there in 2.3, like the WiFi or 3G icons, or do I now have an app that’s constantly syncing? Thanks guys.

    • Anonymous

If you look down a little someone mentioned that on my post as well. I like him had to do a factory reset to get rid of the syncing icon. It’s not there now. Just waiting for TB to reload all my data/apps…

  • http://www.facebook.com/steve0mac Steven Cornea

damn, you cant just use Z4root?

  • Aaron

Ok, so im just curious but I put GB on my X, but I don’t have any wall papers or live wallpapers that look like the screenshot from above (blue honeycomb). Anyone else have this issue? Where can I get it and why wasn’t it installed along with GB? thanx.

  • Anonymous

Well. I don’t know what I did inadvertently right but I flashed rooted GB fine. And then once it loaded all my apps data customizations etc were present. I’m not complaining mind you cause it beats the hell out of restoring everything. I’m just kinda puzzled as I thought this wiped everything. And yes I did use the rooted version of GB.

    • Tim242

I had to factory reset after I flashed it. That’s the only way to get the syncing icon to go away.

      • Anonymous

Yeah I’ve got the syncing icon now too. But I’ll just live with it. Re installing everything just seems like too big a pain if I don’t have to.

        • Tim242

You can’t just live with it. It sucks down battery, constantly syncing. Back
everything up with your Google account, it’s easy. You do not want sync
