New Verizon Samsung (SCH-I520) 4G LTE Device Appears, Has Front Facing Camera

We just got done looking at the Incredible HD, which most thought would be Verizon’s first 4G LTE device and then this bad boy pops up.  The new Samsung SCH-I520 will also be with Big Red, on their new LTE network, love video chatting thanks to a front facing camera, and run at the very least, Froyo.  Oh, there is a chance that it won’t be Bing’d out, but it is currently running TouchWiz and likely will be when it hits store shelves.  We’re expecting this one to be at CES as well.

Thoughts?  I’m guessing we’re all favoring the IncHD over this?

OG Droid owner here. Love my phone but am SO bored and feel like it’s getting long in the tooth. Was really hoping for the bionic but have some concerns about the locked bootloader and the 512 RAM, even if it’s DDR2. TBolt looked intrigueing but single core and that DAMN battery. Don’t want to have a butt on my phone that looks like JLo’s a$$. It looks good on her but not my phone. That being said, the specs on the Samsung Galaxy S2 look quite interesting to me. Fortunately, (and unfortunately) my NE2 isn’t up until August so I don’t have to make any hasty decisions. I think by then, we will have MANY options from all of the mfgs. So, I say, bring ‘em on and let the best one win!!

    Peace, Out!!

I agree with everything in your post, but unfortunately HTC needs to show me they aren't going to flip off consumers again like they did with the G2. Thats the only time they've implemented something to completely lock down every angle of the phone, and if they do it again, I won't buy from them. We do have root access etc now, but when it first came out Tmo and HTC basically said the rooting crowd means nothing to them in a press release.

what is that black piece of something next to the vzw logo? .. what is it covering?

  • Stephen D

Will it have the Orion? That'd be awesome. I still think I'll stick with my Fascinate though.

  • Jonbo298

Taking bets it's LOADED with Bing!

  • ocdwithicons

The 4G icon looks more than a little different. It looks photoshopped different. Grey Haloing. Varied character thickness. Lack of LTE. Usually icons at the top are much more similar than what we see between the incredible HD and this Galaxy device. I am skeptical that this photo is authentic in these details.

  • Romma1

Assuming I can convince my company to sign on to 4G when the phones come out, I will need to read more about all of them and see what they can do. I do want an unlocked bootloader, so perhaps no Moto for me. I would like a front facing cam, but do not want a huge Evo type phone. My Dinc will be a tough order for another phone to make me happy.

  • sylent101

I wish they would stop ruining sexy phones with that vzw logo ..

why does everyone think that the verizon logo looks horrible? it's not that bad.

      • sylent101

I don't know.. it just seems obnoxious to me. The whole world doesn't need to know where I got my phone from. If you're going to stamp a logo on my phone atleast make it look good.

          wahhhh wahhhhh wahhhhhhh stop crying

      • r0landct

to me it's not that it looks bad it is just unnecessary for the front of the phone. I rather have a clean front and a double sized check mark on the back.

  • Bryanday

There is not a LTE next to the 4g symbol like the one on the incredible HD.

    • Kiriuskris

The LTE next to the 4G symbol on the HTC phone is most likely a Sense icon. This 4G icon would probably be Samsung's icon.

    • EC8CH

probably just a different choice of icon on the Sense UI vs TouchWiz.

  • papi92

I'd love to get this if its not plastic.

I'd try Sammy if they had the build quality of their Galaxy Tab, or an HTC, or Motorola Device. But, with the cheap, Fisher Price feel of the Omnia and Galaxy S series devices….its a NO!

  • http://twitter.com/JFMFT Josh Fowler

In terms of what I would most want in a phone… it's got to be: Motorola (unlocked bootloader… like the original Droid) > HTC > Samsung > Motorola (locked bootloader… like the Droid X) > LG > others, unless LG really surprises me. I've never liked their phones much in the past, and so I can't say I'm going to like much of their stuff in the future. A spec sheet doesn't mean much when the phone's ugly and round and just plain bad looking compared to hard-edged phones put out by Motorola, and the svelte and sleek stuff HTC manufactures.

I'm assuming my next phone will be the Incredible HD, given that the new Motorola phones have been coming with locked bootloaders, and I don't see that changing any time soon. Motorola has placed a noose around its own neck with locking down its phones, so I'll be going with HTC from now on assuming they have unlocked phones (or phones that can at least run custom ROM's with custom kernels…). This locked down crap is the reason most Motorola fans are jumping ship (me included) to companies like HTC and Samsung.

This pretty much sums up how I feel word-for-word. Great post!

Does it have a physical keyboard? I (a proud Droid 1 owner) am waiting for the next great Android phone with a physical keyboard. I have finally convinced my wife to upgrade from her old flip phone to a modern Android phone and she, like me, only wants one with a sliding physical keyboard (not the ugly Pro). Right now the Droid 2 is about the only choice, but it already seems abandoned by Verizon. When is the next decent Android phone with a real physical keyboard coming out?

    • http://perpetualn00b.tumblr.com quiklives

I think there will be fewer physical keyboards as the onscreen ones continue to develop, but you probably want to look for the HTC Merge.

    • Ninjakamster1

I’m hoping it’ll be the VZW version of the Epic 4G on Sprint.

    I WANT THIS.

So if they have touchwiz working with 2.2 what is keeping them from giving us fascinate users what we were promised months ago?

    • http://www.facebook.com/borgey401 Andrew Borges

      Fascinate is a fail

      • http://perpetualn00b.tumblr.com quiklives

The Fascinate is a great phone, and it would be freaking amazing, if they would just update it. I love my Droid X, but the Fascinate is awesome.

      • Stephen D

        How so?

  • kimir

    samsung sux HTC FOREVER!

    • r0landct

I just ran google translate on your comment and it says: “I'm a fanboy who rather fondle a phone than a girl”
Buy you know, their translation is never exact…

      • DBK

Agreed. “Girl” is probably supposed to be “Boy”. Foreign grammar can be pretty complicated…..

  • tearminx

it would be infinitely pleasing to Samsung receive terrible sales on this

  • ots

Im waiting for the Etna with its said specs, I trust moto much more than lg or Samsung . Anyone else?

    • QPHALO

      Same here

  • DMBatCOFC

I think I'm in the minority when I say: Looking forward to the Motorola devices!

    • Michael_NM

I don't think you're in the minority at all. I think we're all waiting to hear more about Moto's upcoming phones. We just wish the Blur Bootlocker Brigade wasn't involved.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mobrienjr Michael OBrien

It would be interesting to see if the samsung phones get better now that they made the Nexus S…Other than that not a big fan. The Galaxy S line is nice, but not digging the TouchWiz, and personally love the feel of the OG….

  • tanknspank

Yeah, still going HTC. Sammy makes great phones but they SUCK to dev on. You won't get more than rerolled OTAs on their phones for a long time.

HTC devices look the most appealing to me still.

  • Loskid

Sorry if this has been answered before, but what is TouchWiz?

    • Michael_NM

It's the Samsung's luancher and it deserves to be wizzed on.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mobrienjr Michael OBrien

TouchWiz is the UI that samsung uses, similar to HTC Sense, but TouchWiz sorta has an iPhone touch and feel to it

  • Mth2134

    Ugh. Let the oversaturation begin…

  • http://www.koveleski.com koveleski

I'm reserving judgement until full hands on previews of hardware and bloatware (or lack thereof) are available.
