I tested the DX over the weekend and was shocked at the sluggishness compared to my D1/1G/2.2. I think removing the bloatware and of course Froyo will fix most of the problems.

I see no reason that the folks who prefer Verizon shouldn't have the same level of control should they desire it. Sure, plenty of people don't give a rat's ass about custom ROMs but likewise, most are happy to keep whatever version of OS, browser, etc.

Well I think rooting it is very easy.

Great work! I've got an Evo but the Droid X is another excellent phone and I see no reason that the folks who prefer Verizon shouldn't have the same level of control should they desire it. Sure, plenty of people don't give a rat's ass about custom ROMs but likewise, most are happy to keep whatever version of OS, browser, etc. comes with their computer. For the rest of us who like to always be updated and running everything we can, custom ROMs are a godsend.

I've never rooted a droid. All my friends have done it to theirs. Will this brick my phone, due to the eFuse, that was mentioned a while back or will it be similar to the way that was figured out recently?

If it's safe I am totally going to do this when I get it on the 8-4 release

It is rooted, this is great, now it will surely going to upgrade the files with in it now.

Ok – I'm new to the Android world – but what good does a rooted phone do if you are unable to use it because of an eFuse switch? If the eFuse switch prevents you from using a different ROM what is the point of rooting it

I hope you arent holding your breath for that. Milestone hasnt been hacked yet, and its been over 7 months. Rooting it was always expected, just like Milestone.

It was one of the main reasons I bought my D1 since I wanted a GPS but I wanted to get a smart phone as well.it’s awesome news for the owners of the Droid X. Now about that pesky custom rom thing :)

Well ….. that didn’t take very long :D

I think,You need to crack the bootloader to be able to load customs ROMs and custom kernels.

It doesn’t surprise me that its AllDroid and XDA since the X isnt an HTC device, and thats what XDA seems to mostly develop for.

  • droidaholic

eehhh. you're right. wasnt thinking about the bootloader and kernels. use to a rooted droid where i can do whatever i want to to it. lol

  • nick o

Kellex its not that hard dude u should do a tutorial even though i ardy got mine but anyways im wondering how i delete city id my verizon etc.

  • JCSandifer713

Im having a slight problem with my Droid….Im running Kangerade(Green Theme) and for some reason when i turn my phone landscape it doesnt go to landscape….but when i slide the keyboard out it goes into landscape mode…even while i was doing the sign in process I did in landscape….after the sign in its right back to portrait though I'm holding the phone sideways….is there anything i can do to fix that???

    • Mrpicolas

make sure its checked in display settings in the menu different roms have different things turned off or on by defualt

      • JCSandifer713

        Thanks a lot!!!

        • Mrpicolas

          No problem

    • gamboo

Hmmmmmm. I will make a deal with you. You tell how to crack the bootloader on my Droid X and I will tell to fix your droid 1 problem. hehe!

  • quiklives

I'm going to have to skip this for now. ADB isn't going onto my computer, and while I'm sure it's operator error, I just don't have the guts to keep messing with it right now.

    • nick o

      i got mine rooted!

  • http://thenerdyengineer.wordpress.com/ TheNerdyEngineer

I wonder how long it will take for somebody to put 2.2 on the X now. JIT FTMFW!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/tbbutler Timothy Brian Butler

okay me and my friend want to know…. Can you over clock?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!? someone please answer

    • bsteen

No. Without bootloader access you can't change the kernel, so you can't overclock. You can, however, set up underclocking profiles to try to get better battery life, but that's of questionable value.

      • http://www.facebook.com/tbbutler Timothy Brian Butler

.. man…. how can you underclock but not overclock?!?!!? this is reallly disappointing… something everyone probably but me knew.. but are the kernels what that bootloader lock protect?

        • droidaholic

You can overclock, wifi-tether, anything you want to. just not custom roms. why would you root if u couldnt overclock? lol

          • bsteen

You can't overclock if you can't install a custom kernel and you can't install a custom kernel if the bootloader is locked. That's why simply rooting isn't that big a deal. You need to crack the bootloader to be able to load customs ROMs and custom kernels.

Underclocking is simply taking the stock kernel and throttling it down to run at a slower frequency. As I said, it may save some battery life, but it's of questionable value.

          • Mrpicolas

its probally pretty possible to overclock since root has been obtained and i believe that the had a kernrl workaround for the milestome that may work with the x well have to wait and see though

          • bsteen

Errrr, yup, you're right. The app you're talking about overwrites cpufreq in the stock kernel to overclock the Milestone up to 1.2 Ghz, so that should also be possible with the X. That's why I love this group. Learn something new all the time.

          • http://www.facebook.com/tbbutler Timothy Brian Butler

JesuS christ so the answer is?????

          • droidaholic

eehhh. you're right. wasnt thinking about the bootloader and kernels. use to a rooted droid where i can do whatever i want to to it. lol

  • Paawpabear1955

    What does “root” mean?

  • jbfickler

Birdman JUST updated his root process with a video!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLT1DX4N96A&feat

    Good Luck Everyone

  • Ragnarok180

But don't you still need to get past the efuse issue even after you gain root access? What are the benefits of simply having root access to the phone?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716789798 Lonnie Kerchief

    Goodbye City ID!!!

  • RichardJHauser

That is amazing! Does that mean you can remove the Bloatware?

I test drive the DX over the weekend and was shocked at the sluggishness compared to my D1/1G/2.2. Isn't the DX an upgraded processor? Is anyone else having weird wireless issues. It got a little better after the Verizon patches, but it was still bad. I think removing the bloatware and of course Froyo will fix most of the problems.

    • Austin

no clue what your talking about.. my droid x is light years faster than my D1 running 0.4 bb froyo 800mhz clock.. it is crazy really

  • Justin

For most users, root without unlocking the bootloader is useless. It is a start though…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1143030578 Curtis Hoffman

are you guys going to put up a full Droid X root guide soon??

  • Jon

Since this phone is FINALLY rooted, it will help boost the sales because I know afew people that didn't want to buy it if they weren't able to root it.

  • Justin

Woot! Now enable internet streaming through the hdmi out

  • Tuna

What's the easiest way to delete the Bloatware??? Is there an app that makes this easy??

    • Justin

On the D1, titanium backup was the ticket

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_O2734GY35AU7HRVC7I2H3SXIXQ Michael

Can you really wifi tether? I thought this was stomped on by verizon?

    • craig1989

Yes you can, use Barnacle tether in the app store
