  • I have a Win Phone 7 from Work and my personal phone is an OG Droid.  The Droid still kicks the snot out out of the WP7  even though it is older, has less memory, and a slower proc.  I now only use the WP for long conference calls so I don’t burn my minutes.  Point being that I would rather use my personal phone for work than use the free WP7 I have – hence why it is and will remain about 1%.  Now if Ican just get the Nexus Prime I would probably just toss the WP in my desk and leave it for the dust bunnies.

  • What google bought RIM, killed it, and didn’t get permission from the DOJ? Would everyone be like, “off with Google’s head!” for being anti-competitive?

  • Like razorblades Android phones are a low margin commodity.  How Apple can make more money than all of these Android OEMs on one phone is amazing.

My hand holds an Android phone but my money is in Apple stock.  Go figure;  a traitor?  not really; just more money to buy Android phones like the Bionic $$$.

  • Ha!  I was concerned that Android was losing ground when I saw the post said 40%… I always seem to forget that others besides iOS exist.

  • who the hell still owns an “other” phone? LOL you should be taken out back and beaten immediately

    • People who can’t afford the luxury of the top companies or carriers. Humility, it’s a dying trait, sadly.

  • In the spirit of football l’m going to draw a little scenario for everyone:
How often do the NE Pats gloat about beating the Jets? (Never)
How often do the NY Jets gloat about beating the Pats? (Every chance they get)
The reason the Pats don’t have to rub it in there faces is because they know they are on top, they are proven champions. The Jets on the other hand still have to prove to everyone that they are great.

I think we (The Android Community) have officially surpassed the point of having to convince others we are great and have without a shadow of a doubt surpassed the “competition”. Although it is great to see these stats about the Green team reigning victorious, it is time to stop pointing and laughing, and time to act as Champions, with class, style, and just act as if the other company doesn’t even exist!

    • Agreed, I think it’s better to be understated than overstated. And as was the case with Toyota a couple years ago, being #1 can make you a target as well.

    • The one problem with this is it that you make it sound like apple doesn’t gloat. They gloat every chance they get and even if they don’t have something to gloat about they skew some polls and manufacture reasons to gloat.

No, this doesn’t mean that the Android community should do the same I just thought I’d point out that the “competition” is far from humble.

  • From “Android, what?” to “Android want!” in 2 years.  That is amazing.  Apple was still scoffin at the idea that android could be a threat 2 years ago.

  • I think this will pretty much be the break down for the foreseeable future. Those that own an iOS device are very unlikely to switch just like those that own an Android device are very unlikely to switch. Thus the battle is for those that do not yet own smart phones (and looking at the chart above, there are a LOT of people in that category). Barring some amazing marketing campaign from Microsoft, they will almost certainly choose either Android or iOS. As the two are nearly comparable in features (and with Jailbreaking/Rooting you can make one look and act like the other) it comes down to hardware and the fact is not everyone wants a 3.7″ touchscreen only box. Some people like bigger phones, some like physical keyboards, etc. On top of that, the iPhone just isn’t the “cool” thing anymore for two reasons. 1. A lot of people own one thus reducing the hipster/cool/whatever factor. 2. They’ve been around for a while and by and large really don’t look much different than a first gen, especially when you slap a case on it.

  • I’m sure the iPhone 5 will have an impact on the numbers, but only short term.  I think people are starting to realize how boring iOS is…especially since the average consumer is not going to jailbreak.

    • I think that’s the key.  Most people that have bought an iphone were going from feature phones to a smartphone and didn’t know what they were doing.  They heard iphone was great and went that route.  Now, they can make the smart decision with their new upgrades to a more powerful phone.

      • Have you ever watched someone who isn’t familiar with smart phone try to use android.  WOW our company we started issuing android as it was more open and gave the users options.  They had no idea what they had or how to use it.  oh which icon dials, ok contact and email….  that’s it.  Try to explain widgets, app stores and the other android oddities to people and their eyes roll back in their head.

        • Hey if my mom can use a android phone (dx) anyone can and she’s 52 years old all u have to do is play on it and it will come to u.

        • Well I have seen this with the iPhone as well. I think if your into tech gadgets you either get it or you don’t – doesn’t matter if it’s iPhone or Android.
