Typically, when you are looking to test your internet speeds, one will head to Ookla’s Speed Test website, or maybe even Netflix’s new Fast.com site. Well, that all may be changing soon. According to information posted onto Google’s support site, as well as a tweet circulating the web, it appears Google is bringing internet speed testing directly to Google Search.
Currently, when a search of “check internet speed” is performed on Google, you will be met with plenty of results, whether they be from Netflix, Ookla, Xfinity, etc. When these changes go live for the masses, a button will appear in Google Search stating, “Run Speed Test.” When hit, Google will perform the speed test for you, then relay that information back to you. Google is essentially turning themselves into your destination instead of the middleman, something they have been getting better at as Google Search has become a more powerful and smarter tool over the years.
Stated on Google’s support page, the test is performed by M-Lab. Besides your IP address, no other information is shared, but it also not known what other information is provided following the test. For example, Ookla will provide comprehensive details post speed test, unlike Fast.com which merely shows your download speed. Will Google provide download and upload speeds, or allow you to choose a server to perform the test? Currently, the test is said to weigh in at around 40MB of transferred data, possibly more if your speeds are high. If you count MBs on your monthly phone plan, be aware of that.
We don’t quite know when Google will flip the switch for this feature, but if testing is being done in select areas, we must be close. From time to time, feel free to run that search and maybe you will get lucky and see the option pop up.
Looks like Google is testing their own internet speed test (query = "check internet speed") – not seeing it live — pic.twitter.com/wjsPIlEbFv

I thought that fast.com was convenient but here comes Google with an instant internet speed measure.
I don’t feel like any of them actually meet their claims speeds
Okay google, take over everything lol
I’m pretty sure Google needs Internet Speed Test addon
to determine user’s location (+++ value for Ads) when it’s not available or disabled in browser settings.
Wouldn’t matter much then for me because I usually disable my location settings.

How much are you guys paying for internet and the speed? 250Mbps here xfinity $59.99
Here in Canton Ohio, $59.99 gets you 25Mbps down and 2Mbps up on Time warner.
Cox cable Cleveland area is 100 for 65. You are getting ripped off there sir
Sadly we have Time Warner or U-Verse. Both cost pretty much the same. But yeah, I am noticing from these other posts what a rip off this is.
Time Warner is the worst.
Somerton, AZ
Up to 40 Mbps & 5Mbps up for $39.99
best i can get in my area of NYC is 60 Mbps down 25 up for $40 +tax
$64.99/month for 100Mbps Midcontinent, ND
Is that part of a promo? Xfinity 150 is $82.95/mo here. That’s the actual cost, not the promotional price that goes away 6 months later.
I had to sign a 2 year contract for 59.99. 150 was 49.99. Just internet no cable tv
Wish we had that offer here. We can’t even get 250 down, highest is 150 and has no special promo pricing. What upload do you get with the 250 plan?
25 up. There might be better pricing if you check xfinity’s site for internet only. The promo price was for the full 2 years
We had the same as you here in Northeast GA with Comcast, 82.95 when they first came in with lower speeds, and then AT&T got threatened by Google so they gave everyone 1 gig internet for 70 bucks a month and Comcast’s answer was to offer almost the same at 1 gig but push their “2 Gig” service for $300 dollars a month, Comcast is just amazing.
Are your speeds consistent throughout the day? Used to have Xfinity at 25mbps and would get around 1 during rush hour…
Luckily our neighborhood is pretty spread out. Haven’t seen any dip in speeds.
Got lucky and got AT&T GigaPower in my neighborhood at around 950 megs up and down for 70 bucks a month in North GA.
and as a side note, Google released a press statement that they were considering are area. Before that: 45 down – 3 up. lol.
$80/month for 50Mbps on Time Warner here in Dallas. A complete ripoff, but AT&T is actually even worse.
I am going to need more cowbell!
TL;DR don’t blame google for slow searches when your internet speed is dogging
I’m at the point where I think Google is just a little bit bored. I’m not sure why I would need this.
Information dude. Your google search took a little longer than normal…you can A. go to another page to check your speeds or B. Look up at the top of the page and check your speed.
You never had the need to run a speed test to make sure your internet is providing you what you pay for?
As a matter of fact I only have that need if a page doesn’t load up as quickly as I would like it. I guess I have to remember that Google is trying to make my life as easy as possible.
