After searching the market with no success, a Googler set out to make a futuristic mirror for his bathroom. Using easy-to-acquire components, he built a mirror that could display local weather, news headlines, and the time. In the future, he hopes to be able to display anything that has a Google Now card.
As for the construction, a two-way mirror was used, display panel, controller board, plus a bunch of random components to fuse it all together. For the UI, select Android APIs were utilized, and powering the unit, is a Amazon Fire TV Stick. At first, the Googler experimented with a Chromecast, followed by a Nexus Player, but for now, a Fire TV Stick is being used.
Naturally, there is no how-to for this project quite yet, but possibly in the future. Given this is a Googler we are talking about, we would love to see this project made into something a bit more obtainable for your average consumer.
Below, check out the photo of how it looks in the bathroom, followed by a “Behind the Curtain” photo which shows off all of the hardware inside.

Yeah but can it play Crisis?
I actually made something like this in school once, minus the android. This one looks so much more better. I need this.

There is definitely a how to on this exact thing. I saw a Reddit post where a guy did this
This one uses a Raspberry Pi and looks awesome too:

now THAT’S cool
woah… awesome. get this in the market! doubt it would be too affordable but still. amazing.
While it’s cool to look at, “Alexa, what’s the weather for today”, “Alexa, read me my news brief”, and “Alexa, play song” all negate the effort needed to create this…
Unless you’re deaf, hard of hearing, or don’t like listening to a computer voice, or you have a significant other sleeping nearby, or a child, or you just don’t like talking in the morning, especially to computers, or you like having it there without you asking.
Sometimes things are created for the fun and the challenge not because it was the easiest way to get it done.
I saw this awhile back and have been planning it for some time. However, the cost of the two-way mirror makes this very cost prohibitive (it’ll cost you $100+). So i’m now using a two-way film (used for window privacy -http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JRSG8BG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage) that basically does the same thing at a fraction of the cost. Till debating whether or not to apply the film directly to the Touchpad (that way you can control it possibly (maybe, that is…) or to mount the film to a cheap piece of glass. Couple this with my old HP Touchpad and a frame….and this will be a very cheap and easy-ish project. I’m still trying to figure out the software to use. This girl’s software/app is a good start, but i’d like to add and remove a lot…and unfortunately I’ve got no development skills. This will not be going in the bathroom though…this’ll be more of an entry way/landing area mirror. Beyond my rambling above…the one takeaway is to look at using the film as opposed to buying the glass.
nice ideea. what about a RPi zero (5 bucks, cheaper than Amazon Fire Stick) + small display + glass + two-way privacy film. You can run the RPi in Kiosk mode displaying a HTML page that you can design by your own. Total cost should be way below 100$
This would be awesome for a vanity mirror, so when my wife is getting ready to go out she can see that she is running late…
and then change the mirror to black so she has no other choice but leave….ah that would be perfect.

Yes! Since girls spend hours preparing their self. If they have this for a mirror, they will know if they’re running late. A perfect Valentines gift for a girl!
No it’s a terrible idea and here’s why.. They will get stressed watching the time because they will feel like they can’t be ready on time aaaand, it’s nagging time. No, but no, thanks!
dude.
I love gadgets, phones, watches, ect as much as the next guy. But…I must be the only one that enjoys the few moments (ie the shower, or shaving) where I’m not connected and getting inundated by emails, texts, news?
where I’m not connected and getting inundated by emails, texts, news?
Awwwwww! Poor, young Master Popular whines that he feels inundated and is in a quandary because he gets so many texts and emails! It sounds like he certainly is quite popular!
Whatever shall he do?
Pro tip: turn off your phucking phone if you don’t want to look at texts and emails.
lol. Wow.
I wonder if the electronics are affected by humidity
Make this a fog-less mirror to hang in the shower with the components sealed as to not get wet with voice control to search and you have another reason for guys to stay in the show longer other than 1) your SO with you 2) that thing with your thing…..you know…
That would require a battery pack though, which is kind meh. I wouldn’t want to have to charge my shower mirror though I know people replace batteries and what not for shower radio.
be nice if there was a central hub device that had this build into mirrors, refrigerator displays, coffee tables, and just serve as a day to day android hub. someone at home could at a calendar reminder or grocery list while at the fridge and it syncs to google cloud to your phone
You mean something like this?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Cf7IL_eZ38
This could freak out your guests knowing you have an Android powered device hidden behind a mirror.
Because all Android devices have cameras…
I’m talking about them having electronics hidden behind a mirror that they can’t see. It would certainly make me wonder if something shady was going on, especially if I was a guest and didn’t know the story behind it.
And you thought your wife/girlfriend took a long time to get ready before…
With a front-facing camera on almost every tablet, this could really go bad quickly.
Sign me up, specially if it can display your notes and calendar reminders.
I gotta say as a guy don’t spend time in front of the mirror … Hell ya I want one. Lol
I mean you’re normally there for while you’re brushing your teeth, this is great for 2 minute info. What’s the weather? What’s the top headlines? What’s on my calendar?
Reminds me of the Four Seasons bathroom mirrors, I definitely something I want to do with my home.
There have been several of these on Reddit the past month or so. Most under r/diy

Let me know when the price comes down. And you have to plug it in.
But I do like it.
Plug it in!? It’s core competency is electronic! Are you looking for one with a battery, maybe go charge your mirror once every 3 days?
I’m sure what you are thinking about is that if this became more mainstream it would be wired to the house or have like a power source in the cabinet as not to have any more wires.
I gotta say, as a guy, I don’t spend enough time in front of the bathroom mirror to warrant such a thing
But this will be good for getting out of the shower and getting ready in the morning, all the information (weather, schedule, etc) you need is right in from of you. I love the idea!
Spoken like someone who either can’t grow a beard or looks like a hipster caveman.
even as a guy, i still brush my teeth and wash my face every morning, a glance at weather, traffic (well less traffic since i walk to work), agenda for the day, and headlines would still be useful to me.
plus it looks awesome!
Where is the Kickstarter for this!!!!
Yes Please post the link if a how to is ever released..

Damn it Google give me my Minority Report Future!
Good until moisture moisture gets in it!
Dark days… Maybe he takes cold showers?
Dope, indeed.
