Are you sitting down? Good, because you are about to receive a bit of shocking news. Yet another delay has struck the Turing Phone. Hyped as a phone with ultra security, made of Liquidmorphium, will probably never launch at this point, even though TRI, the company behind the phone, would like you to think otherwise. TRI has sent out a letter to those who pre-ordered, claiming that they are shooting to launch the device in April, pushed from their previous target of March, but there is also something else… The phone won’t run Android anymore, either.
Stated by TRI, “We can now confirm that TRI has chosen to drop Android and use Jolla’s Sailfish OS. Sailfish OS is now running perfectly on the Turing Phone and we have started the final OS software testing phase.” TRI goes on to claim that SailFish OS blazes on the Snapdragon 801, an outdated processor that should not be shipped on a device that costs north of $600. TRI also states that the Turing Phone will come with an “Android application store” if you need to download any important Android apps to the device. To go along with this mess, TRI says that they are hosting a Turing Developers Conference in Q2 of this year. No word on when or where exactly this “developers conference” is taking place.
To recap all of this, in case you have not been paying attention, the Turing Phone went live for pre-order in September of last year. Orders were supposed to ship in time for Christmas. Nothing happened. Those who pre-ordered were left wondering what happened. On Facebook, TRI stated shipments were being pushed to March, and that anyone who pre-ordered would receive a free upgrade. Now, shipments are expected in April, TRI is just now getting to software testing, and the SailFish OS is distributed by a company that doesn’t even have enough money to refund people who purchased its dead Jolla Tablet. This is a bad situation.
If you pre-ordered this device, honestly, I implore that you cancel your order immediately and pray TRI refunds your money in a timely manner. TRI should be held accountable for claiming that the Turing Phone would ship with the Android OS and then taking people’s hard-earned money. And now, after all of these delays, you are receiving SailFish with an “Android application store” to download your apps. In my eyes, this is unacceptable. When you gave TRI your money, you expected to have a Turing Phone running Android in your hands by Christmas time. Now, you might see a phone running a completely different OS in April, and that’s if there are not anymore delays, which there probably will be. Cancel your order, get a refund, and wipe your hands of this disaster. And remember, backing a crowdfunded phone is almost always a terrible idea.
Here is the complete letter to Turing Phone pre-orderers.
Dear Turing Fans,
You will be pleased to know that we have ironed out the final development tasks before we deliver the Turing Phone to your hands. We fully expect the Turing Phone to be delivered in the month of April 2016.
Many of you have asked numerous times through our Facebook fan page as well as emailed us about our OS development. We can now confirm that TRI has chosen to drop Android and use Jolla’s Sailfish OS. Sailfish OS is now running perfectly on the Turing Phone and we have started the final OS software testing phase.
Sailfish OS runs exceptionally fast on the Turing. You will not have to worry about performance issues with Turing’s Snapdragon 801 because Sailfish OS has been optimized to run fast on your Turing Phone. The Turing Phone will still be able to run Android Apps on the Sailfish OS without issue. An Android application store will be available for you to download your favorite apps.
The Sailfish OS is an evolved continuation of the Linux MeeGo OS previously developed by an alliance of Nokia and Intel. MeeGo mobile software platform was created through the merging of Moblin and the Maemo OS originally developed by Nokia.
This essentially means you have one of the world’s fastest mobile device running the fastest mobile OS with the capability of running your favorite apps in a secure environment.
TRI will also be hosting its first Turing Developers Conference (TDC) during Q2 2016.
We can’t wait to get the phones out to your hands. Thank you so much for your continued patience and support for the Turing Project.

I just wanted to say thank you for finally exposing this company for the sham that it truly is. I’ve been watching this company for a while now, mostly because I absolutely loved the design of their phones (with the exception of the VERY LARGE and quite garish one in your article). I had no idea how everyone was blasting Saygus, but no one was paying attention to TRI, which since the QSAlpha days has taken in million of dollars in kickstarter/indiegogo money and has delivered nothing but unfulfilled promises. The Facebook posts, which seem to be the only method the company is communicating with the general public, are just a total joke — full of contradictory information (“we’re considering upgrading the processor, yes” — REALLY?? on a phone you’re supposed to be shipping NEXT MONTH?), “stay tuned” type posts, etc. Every time they get close to a release date, there’s yet another reason for a large delay. It’s now happened several times over the last three years or so.
They’ve made a couple prototypes that they’ve passed around to the online tech ‘zines. And when people started getting antsy, they spent some time to make a really nice octagonal case with plush material inside, claiming this is what the phones would ship in. Probably cost them a grand or so. Not much to spend on perpetuating the lie when you’ve taken in millions.
Of course, if they eventually DO release a phone, I’ll gladly eat some crow over this, but it doesn’t look likely. I hope these scammers get what’s coming to them. It’s been a slick campaign, and the phone looks amazing. That’s what makes it so disgusting.
This just in..Turing will now come bundled with DOS
How come no one who reviews ripoff Turing never mentions the first foray into ripping off he public? The QS Alpha. Same phone. Same price. Same CEO! Those folks are still waiting..
That is what really kills me. No one brings that up. The funny thing is last month or the month before, Turning announced they were yet again partnering with a larger company to finally help the company deliver on all the promises it had made. Um, yeah, buyers have already been through that. I was like “here they go again.”
They deserve a chokeslam through their developers’ conference table.
March 1st they will announce they are now shipping it with WebOS. ???
Why people would ever preorder something like this is beyond me.
Looks like an upside down Zune HD
This, will be BlackBerry 10 OS all over again, but with a different name. There’s a reason BlackBerry adopted Android on the Priv, because it’s an OS that the rest of the world uses. TRI is digging a grave here, and now all we can do is watch them gladly hop into it, and be buried, with every phone ecosystem that’s failed, such as; Tizen, Firefox OS, BlackBerry 10 OS, Windows Phone/Mobile, and now, Sailfish OS (the one they’re adopting).
This is further proof. You see a crowdfunded phone, just step away. Stay close enough to watch the suckers get duped out of their money, but far enough away that you don’t catch their stupidity. Because Stupid is contagious.
But I like shipping delays, and critical OS changes. In fact, I think I’ll order myself a Turing phone right now! /s
Dafuq is sailfish os?
Seems as though buying/pre-ordering a crowdfunded phone is, well, stupid.
They might as well have said “just cancel your orders now please”. How exactly do you justify going from the most popular OS in the world to one that is virtually nonexistent and supported by a practically bankrupt company? Yeah, good luck with software support. I like how they mention it’s the descendant of Meego. Just look at how Nokia and Intel became successful in the mobile realm because of Meego! Oh, wait… If you can’t develop your own OS in house, why not give Cyanogen a call? Of course, if Cyanogen was smart they’d probably stay away. Just like all the backers of this phone should have.
…
i dunno, i feel like if you look at that picture, and think “hey, that looks like something i want to spend money on” you kind of deserve to get screwed a little.
I agree. That’s the ugliest device ever. Looks like a schizophrenic 6 year old designed it.
Looks Perfect for Asia markets, since they have no taste in colors and designs
THAT one is particularly hideous. The others are much nicer: http://cdn01.androidauthority.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/turing-dark-wyvern.jpg
only if it’s a hot chick
I had to search, it looks like the pre-order pricing for a Turing phone costs $610+ … for a phone using a nearly two year old SOC, that’s a bit much – assuming it ever even gets released. And that’s ignoring the whole bait-and-switch on now using an OS with questionable support going forward.
Not even “nearly” two years at this point. This whole thing is a complete farce. And whatever happened to that whole “unhackable” thing that they were talking up earlier?
It will certainly be unhackable because it’s not likely to ship. And even if it does ship, the fact that it’s running an obscure OS means that hackers aren’t likely to pay any attention to them.
You’re better off with a BlackBerry Priv. It won’t be “unhackable” or “unbreakable” but it’ll be more hardened than a Samsung, have a recent SOC (the SD 808), and have the BlackBerry keyboards (virtual + physical) on it.
If people give money to these obvious scams, they deserve to lose their money.
Good luck with that
Might as well announce that it now features the newly developed FailFish OS.
And this reminds me why I pay little or no attention to crowdfunding items, especially not phones
And this is why i never pre-order phones.
Unbelievable. This is a dumpster fire of epic proportions. Right next to the swamp that is known as Saygus.
LMAO!
Well, at least they TRIed 😉
…..I’ll allow it.
I really, actually laughed at this reply. 🙂

Just like that you DUMP one OS for the other…. on a whim…?
People please get your money back from these maniacs
I’m assuming it’s still Android, just their own fork of it like Amazon’s “Fire OS”. Else they wouldn’t be able to support an “Android application store” along with it.
“Android support
Sailfish OS can run Android™ applications. It is based on open source Android libraries, ensuring performance comparable to the native environment.”
https://sailfishos.org/
Funny how these companies work, messy *shrug*
“Android Application Store” lol oh lord. . . .I can’t with these companies. Android is pretty much useless with out Google Play
My understanding is that Sailfish OS uses Alien Dalvik to emulate an Android environment – most Android apps should run on it; the keyword being “most”.
It’s not. It’s based on the dead corpse of Meego. My understanding is that it runs Android apps similar to how BB10 does. And it won’t have access to the Play Store and being that it’s not actually Android, there’s probably no easy way to get the Play Store. Not to mention the fact that it will never see an update since Jolla is going broke. This decision is basically the equivalent of saying “Hey, let’s put out this dumpster fire with gasoline!”
I used the Play Store on BlackBerry 10 OS, and while the platform of BlackBerry 10 is solid/good, there’s no replacement for Android when running Android apps. Hence why I have a BlackBerry Priv.
