OnePlus CEO Pete Lau announced this morning that the OnePlus 6 will have a glass back. Lau suggests that this new glass back will bring a “sense of value” to customers, as well as a “premium hand-feel.” I think he misspelled “fragile,” but we’ll come back to that.

This is the first use of glass on the backside for OnePlus, so it’s kind of a big deal. Lau talked about OnePlus’ approach to glass, acknowledging the fact that they aren’t even close to being the first to use it. He does think they’ve done it differently by going through over 70 prototypes of glass to find the best one, while also using an extra couple of layers of Nanotech Coating to present a “stronger impression of depth” to users. I’m sure it will look fine. Well, this leaked image doesn’t look fine, but the finished product could.

My questions are: what happened to that wood-grain we saw a few weeks back that is at the top of this post? Hopefully, that’s not just a skin and will be an actual option. Why not give us another sandstone after OnePlus just made a big deal on the OnePlus 5T about sandstone coming back? Glass wins this round, I guess.

I’m working up an extra spicy Monday morning rant on the use of glass (here it is!), so hang with us if that sounds like fun. Otherwise, enjoy the thought of glass on the OnePlus 6.
