I reviewed the Galaxy S6 Edge last year, coming away impressed overall with Samsung’s design, camera, and display technology. There were a few shortcomings, such as battery life and the usefulness of the Edge Panel, but as Samsung announced when they introduced both the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge, most of the problems I had with last year’s device have been addressed. There’s a bigger battery, they completely reworked Edge Panel, and even threw in water resistance and expandable storage as a bonus. On paper, this should be the ultimate phone.
I will say, the Galaxy S7 Edge is much like the Galaxy S7, so instead of diving deep into features that have already been touched on in Kellen’s review, I will attempt to primarily speak about features specific to the Galaxy S7 Edge. Don’t worry, there’s still plenty to talk about.
Here is our Galaxy S7 Edge review.
The Good
Specs
The Galaxy S7 Edge features a 5.5″ Super AMOLED QHD display, Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, 12MP Dual Pixel rear-facing camera with OIS, 5MP front-facing shooter with OIS, IP68 water and dust resistance, microUSB charging and data port, 32GB of onboard storage, expandable storage slot for an extra 200GB of storage, fingerprint reader, 3,600mAh battery, wireless charging, NFC, and TouchWiz running atop Android 6.0 “Marshmallow.”
While we will likely see plenty of other devices rocking similar specs this year, the IP68 water resistance helps separate Samsung’s latest offerings from the rest of the field. Needless to say, all of these specs in a single smartphone package is what dream phones are made of.
Display
Compared to last year’s Galaxy S6 Edge 5.1″ display, the S7 Edge features a slightly larger screen, with Samsung bringing the panel up to 5.5-inches. It’s still the same resolution, Quad HD (2560 x 1440). It’s still Super AMOLED. Beyond the size, not much is different. According to the pros who test all things smartphone displays, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge are some of the best on the market, meaning Samsung is still cranking out good quality panels.
To my eyes, I prefer Super AMOLED panels over the other types you would find from HTC or LG, as the colors are usually more saturated than you’d find elsewhere. Some folks don’t care for high saturation, but with a few tweaks in the settings, you can actually change the amount of saturation you will see. Out of the box, the Screen Mode is set to Adaptive, which attempts to give the best experience based on what it is you are doing on your phone. If you want the colors toned down a bit, switch the Screen Mode to either Basic or AMOLED Photo.
Design
If you took the Galaxy S6 Edge and merged it with the Galaxy Note 5, you would have the Galaxy S7 Edge. Thanks to the curved backside, like we see on the Galaxy Note 5, the device is much more comfortable to hold than the Galaxy S6 Edge. Last year, the S6 Edge was quite rigid, almost sharp on its siding. This year, it’s very smooth and feels fantastic in-hand. As for the curved sides, they look great, and definitely draws the attention of anyone around you who is unfamiliar with Samsung’s latest designs.
What draws me to the Galaxy S7 Edge in 2016 is that Samsung stayed true to the idea of the Galaxy S6 Edge, with the curve, but made rather minimal changes to make it easier to handle. This shows me that Samsung’s design team were listening closely to those who purchased the phone, then made the changes to reflect what they heard. Really, you can’t change anything else to make it a better feeling phone. The gentle slope on the back and curves on the front all feel great. Besides the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note 5, I can’t think of a more comfortable phone to hold.
With all of the praise out of the way, I will say that it took me a few solid days to get used to handling the device properly. By this, I mean you have to adjust where your fingers rest when the device is in landscape mode, or you might accidentally hit the screen, causing unwanted actions. For example, if I’m watching YouTube and don’t have my fingers just right, I might hit a playback option and the video will skip forward or even pause it depending on where I tapped it. So, yes, the S7 Edge takes a bit of practice, but once you master where your fingers should rest whenever you are holding the phone, it’s fine.
Camera
You will find the exact same shooter in the Galaxy S7 Edge as you would the Galaxy S7, a 12MP Dual Pixel sensor featuring optical image stabilization (OIS) and an aperture of f/1.7. Samsung actually toned down the resolution of the camera sensor from last year’s 16MP sensors (Galaxy S6), which broke the trend of the ever-increasing resolution size year-over-year. Even with the lower megapixel count, the shots capable of being taken on this phone are mind boggling at times. When going in for those macros, or zooming in on a landscape, the clarity and details that remain after you have clicked the shutter is downright impressive.
Let’s talk about the experience of taking photos on this phone. As soon as you open up the camera app, you will notice that the camera is quickly focusing on whatever is in front of it. If shooting something as quickly as possible is required, the Galaxy S7 can be very clutch. After you have focused on your target, switching to Pro mode can get you adjusting the ISO, white balance, shutter speed, and exposure levels. You can even select between a multi-point auto focus or centered auto focus, giving you better command over your shots.
Overall, the camera on this phone might be my favorite aspect, with its super fast focus times, and the overall detail you can capture when shooting. In Kellen’s Galaxy S7 review, he shares a few fantastic shots, so if you have yet to see those samples, give them a look as well.
Availability and Pricing
Like any other major Samsung release, this phone is available anywhere and everywhere. Brick and mortar stores, carrier stores, online – really, everywhere. While this seems like the norm, it’s still a major plus for everyone. If you are on Sprint and want this phone, you can get it. If you’re on Verizon, you can get it.
As for pricing, most carriers will want to push you into a installment plan and get you on a two-year contract, and for many, that’s probably fine. If buying the phone for the full retail price is more your style (you baller, you), the phone averages around $750. There are also many BOGO deals taking place currently that you can take advantage of, allowing you to get two Galaxy S7 Edge (or Galaxy S7) phones for the price of one.
Somewhere-in-the-Middle
Battery
Featuring a 3,600mAh battery, much larger than what was in last year’s Galaxy S6 Edge, I had high expectations from the Galaxy S7 Edge. Unfortunately, at least from my experience, I was nowhere near blown away by battery performance. My typical day was wake up at 7am, go to bed by 11pm, with about 15% battery left at 1-2 hours of screen on time (SOT). That’s purely with T-Mobile 4G LTE connectivity and no WiFi.
According to the GSam Battery Monitor app I have installed, on average per charge, I’m getting a max of 23 hours of battery life, with 3 hours and 10 minutes of SOT. I would say that’s about right. If you think about this, that seems pretty bad. With the power sipping Snapdragon 820 processor and large capacity battery, I was really expecting quite a bit more. However, even though I was nowhere near a day and a half or two days of battery life, a solid day of smartphone life is absolutely fine with me. I usually tend to charge my devices every night anyway, so continuing this is fine with me.
TouchWiz and Edge Features
TouchWiz is getting better, no doubt, but it’s still nowhere near as smooth as stock Android. With these fancy processors and large amounts of RAM, OEMs such as Samsung are essentially using brute force to get their skins to perform well, and even when doing that, performance is not all that great. After a couple of days without a reboot, you can feel the phone becoming sluggish. At times, I feel like I did way back in the day when task managers were a thing. I’ll open up my recent apps, “close all,” then get that placebo effect where I think my phone is running smoother. In 2016, this isn’t exactly what I was expecting for the future of smartphones, but it’s manageable.
In terms of the improved Edge Panel features, Samsung really went back to the drawing board and fixed my main beef with last year’s S6 Edge. That phone had no real useful features on the Edge Panel, but the S7 Edge most certainly does. I can swipe out and get the latest sports scores, top CNN headlines, quickly get into snapping selfies with the camera, and much more. Last year’s People Edge is also included, but is replaceable by more useful features. You can watch our complete Edge Panel overview video below to get a better sense of how Samsung has improved this unique feature.
At the end of the day, TouchWiz has become so much better than it used to be. It’s entirely usable, and really, with the help of custom launchers, themes, and even cranking up the speed of animations, a phone running TouchWiz can look a lot like a phone not running TouchWiz. If you plan on picking this device up, I suggest investing in Nova Launcher, Chrooma Keyboard, and some fancy themes from the theme store.
The Not-so-Good
External Speaker
The one true downside I have with this phone is the external speaker loudness and quality. No, my mobile phone should not be a boombox, but still, it shouldn’t sound like a tinny piece of poo. And while I wouldn’t exactly label the speaker on this phone that poorly, it’s not very good. The sound is pretty weak, and it doesn’t get loud at all. There are apps in Google Play that can make your speaker louder, but of course, you don’t want to accidentally damage your phone.
The placement is also not that exciting. If this phone featured dual front-facing speakers, that would have been the ultimate. Instead, we have one bottom-facing speaker, which usually finds itself getting covered up whenever I have the phone in landscape mode. I have to hold it just right, in usually an uncomfortable position to listen and watch without sound getting blocked. This is annoying.
Other Notes
- Fingerprint Magnet: I’ve got the same issue with fingerprints as Kellen. Yes, it blows! But hey, you could have much worse problems with a phone. Fingerprints are not a deal breaker for me.
- Girlfriend Test: “Easy to hold, not slippery, umm, it feels like a premium product, it doesn’t feel cheap. And a good-sized display. You can reach all necessary sections of the screen with just one hand.”
- Fingerprint Reader: Speaking from my own personal experience, I did not have many issues with last year’s fingerprint reader on the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge. This year, it’s the same for me. Detection seems very quick, and I hardly ever get misreads or errors. On the Galaxy S7 Edge, the fingerprint reader performs exactly how I would expect from a premium smartphone.
- Samsung Pay: If I had a bank that supported Samsung Pay, I could rave on and on about how cool it is. To this day, I’ve never used it, but I know it’s awesome. If you have a bank that supports Samsung Pay, you are gonna have a blast.
- Water Resistance: The IP68 rating is something you won’t know you’ll love until your phone has it. At dinner, I can scare my friends by accidentally spilling water on my phone, which I always get a kick out of. Usually, I’m pretty careful with my phone, but with IP68, I really don’t have to worry about anything.
- Expandable Storage: Samsung heard your cries, adding in a microSD slot for expandable storage. Now, they did technically remove Marshmallow’s Adoptable Storage, but the fact is, you can store data, photos, and apps onto your SD card. For those of you who are ambitious, you can plug in a few adb commands to have your SD card recognized as internal storage, but it is possible Samsung can enable Adoptable Storage with a future update. If we pressure them enough, it can happen. In the meantime, credit where credit is due.
- Fast Wireless Charging: Fast wireless charging is available on both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, and for those using Samsung’s standard fast wireless chargers (not one from Ikea, for example), you should see similar speeds for charging as you would a standard wall charger. Thanks to wireless fast charging, your phone can go from 0-100% in roughly an hour, give or take, which can be incredibly clutch when traveling or juicing up before a night on the town.

The Verdict
For me, the Galaxy S7 Edge sits right next to the Galaxy Note 5 on my list of top favorite Samsung smartphones. The design is perfect, the in-hand feel is fantastic, and Samsung is finally getting realistic about how much crap it can bake into TouchWiz. For anyone looking to upgrade from a Galaxy S5, HTC One M9, LG G3, or something along those lines, the Galaxy S7 Edge is a great choice. You will notice the improved display, insane camera, and will likely appreciate the revamped version of TouchWiz.
However, if you are already on a Galaxy S6 Edge, there does not seem to be too many reasons to upgrade, with exception to water resistance and expandable storage. While those two things can be very handy to have, you may not exactly see them as necessary. You will have pretty similar camera experiences, the same display resolution, and from my experience, pretty much the same battery life.

having many issues with signal strength with this phone! anyone else?? while all my other SAMSUNGS would flawlessly connect at our cottage in Brooklyn Michigan where I totally 100% rely on my weather app ( we have no TV or internet carrier at our cabin!) the SAMSUNG S7 EDGE is NOT picking up any signal at all! if any its faint and barely 3G
! ugh!! help!!
It looks good with some excellent features. However, TouchWiz is what makes me worried. I don’t fancy spending a lot on a phone and have to reboot it every few days. Overall, looks like a great phone.
I don’t like the non-interactive always on display feature. Has anyone tried AcDisplay or Dynamic Notifications on the S7E?
So here’s my battery stats for today. I took the phone off the charger around 5:30 am and installed the security update afterward. Overall, my usage included that update, installing a couple of apps, and mixed usage. Unfortunately, Samsung’s battery manager thing sucks and doesn’t include one of those handy color-coded bars that shows your signal strength for the day so I can’t show you the poor signal strength I had, but on my Nexus 6P in the same place that bar showed a lot of red, yellow, and orange, with one or maybe two bars of LTE, and constant dropping into 3G.
That being said, the phone performed on par with the 6P and may even exceed it tomorrow what with no 10-15 minute update draining part of the battery. However, overall the phone has not given me the best first impression with its performance. Perhaps it’s because it’s a new phone, but the thing could get pretty hot every now and then, and there’s little instances of stuttering here and there. The best example I can give is using the pattern lock screen option. On the Nexus 6P, the animation showing the pattern connecting is smooth 99% of the time. On the S7 sometimes when I wake it up and do the pattern that same animation isn’t as smooth. It’s sometimes a little…*gasp!* “janky.”
For being so high-end in specs, I expected none of that, but alas, Samsung’s software proves it’s still not up to snuff. However, I will give this phone a few more days and hope maybe all that needs to happen is a little bit of housebreaking. But surprising no one, the S7 proves even the best of the best specs can’t match the power of stock Android.
That’s really bad battery life considering the size of the battery, it’s almost turbo 2 size! If I only used my 6p or my wife’s turbo 2 for an hour a day I would get 2 days easily on each. Only good things about this phone is the display and camera. It’s not worth $800.
Samsung nailed it with s7 edge. It will be best selling flagship ever. But i will miss it….still hoping htc can do a miracle (i might be foolish). Metal is my thing, glass is not. And these nexus guys….they are becoming almost as anoying as apple boys….go and buy iphone if only thing u care is batter smooth performance….no nexus can compare to s7 edge.
Your battery experience is pretty abnormal.
OK, not trying to nit-pick, It seems like S7 can’t do lift phone to ear to answer calls and tap to focus and shot in the camera app~
But overall best phone ever~!!!
When purchasing a phone, there are some deal breakers for me. A poor speaker is right up there. My Nexus 6P has super sound. Everything else on the 6P is right up there near the top. For me, it’s still the hone to beat. I like the size.
Very nice try, Samsung, but no excuse for the speakers.
The 7edge is great, the size is slightly bugger than 6egde which makes one hand use a tad bite uncomfortable. My only downer after much testing. It does not reconnect to a cars Bluetooth after you turn the car off. Tested many phones 7 is the only one that will not automatically reconnect.
As good as S6 was, I think S7 is far superior phone, especially in the S7 edge. I had an S6 for less than a year before getting an S7 edge, and it feels like a huge upgrade in every aspect. I’ve got zero regrets about it.
Android system is also killing my battery life. This is the only thing that’s holding back Android. I’ve never had this problem with an iPhone. Even with a smaller battery I can last more than a day.
you cant get through the day? I find that very strange. Android system often pops up as my number battery user too, but despite that I can still get 6 hours of SOT with 24 hours of use on this thing.
I use bluetooth headset from 10:00-18:00 on these devices
Good, objective review. But, with only 32 GB of internal storage, I wouldn’t consider expandable storage a bonus. More like… essential. I suspect that battery life will improve as it burns in, especially if you turn it off and charge it fully each time.
Have come from the m9 to the edge only let down is audio experience , touchwiz also a downer compared to the htc, the rest is superior in every way.
“Thanks to wireless fast charging, your phone can go from 0-100% in roughly an hour, give or take,” WOULDN’T THAT BE NICE!? No, try 2 hours. If you’re lucky.
You’re only getting a little over 3 hours SoT with your S7 edge? I’m getting just a little bit over 5 hours SoT every day.
The S7 edge is the best phone I’ve ever used, and I’ve used the Note 5, G4, Nexus 6P, and iPhone 6s Plus in the last year.
How much better than the 6p would you say it is?
Has anyone heard or have the issue of not being able to charge the s7 edge due to moisture dectection??
I should be getting my GS7 Edge near the weekend. I’m on Verizon I want to see how battery life and storage capacity will change the way I use my phone. (I’m currently using a iPhone 5c with 8GB storage space (read: “5” GB)
For me the battery life is excellent, and easily beating my Droid Turbo 2. I’ve been getting at least 4 hours of SOT, and that’s with quite a few other things going on. I’ve said I’m just trying this phone out as I’ve been reluctant to leave Motorola (and never been a big Samsung fan) but as the days go by, I’m having trouble finding reasons to go back to my DT2. Really the only thing I miss is Moto Display, as Samsung’s Always-On Display isn’t something I’m enjoying.
I’ve been with Motorola/Lenovo since the original Droid X, but…I don’t know. I might finally be leaving.
So another one on Verizon with good battery life…
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.achep.acdisplay this will replace moto display
Thanks, I have tried it. Just haven’t been able to get that to work the way I want but I might tinker some more.
There’s an app called ‘Notific’ I’m gonna use on the GS7 Edge on top of Samsung’s AOD and see how that works.
Anyone know if I were to take my S7 edge back and get the S7….would that negate my order for my free Gear S2?
Just got my S7 Edge today. I’ll upload pics of my battery stats tomorrow. I get notoriously bad signal where I work, and the best battery life a phone has given me after a “hard days work” is usually 3.5 hours of screen on time, 10-ish hours total before the phone is at 10-15% or outright dead. Kind of depends on how often I lose signal or how hard the phone struggles to connect there. Those stats were courtesy of the Nexus 6P and Note 5, so this phone needs to match or exceed that in order for me to call it successful. Otherwise, my Nexus 6P will shantay and stay while the S7 Edge sashays away…
This is from my S7 Edge. I’m on wifi most of the time but should that cause that much difference in battery life? Or is yours struggling to find T-Mobile signal?
“Samsung Pay: If I had a bank that supported Samsung Pay, I could rave on and on about how cool it is. To this day, I’ve never used it, but I know it’s awesome. If you have a bank that supports Samsung Pay, you are gonna have a blast.”
In home depot the other day which doesn’t have nfc terminals, at least in the one I was in, the checkout lady said “did you just pay with your phone? I thought we didn’t have that here?”
My response, “you don’t” 🙂 Fun stuff.
I will say though, I have noticed some lag with the s7 for sure…nothing so severe that it’s a deal breaker, but I will DEFINITELY be on the lookout for an AOSP style ROM in the future that would allow Samsung pay to continue to work.
Can task killers still provide noticeable results; or…not so much? Haven’t used one in forever.
I don’t think you’re going to find it. Once you trip Knox, Samsung Pay is gone forever. If you can root and ROM without tripping Knox, enjoy and let me know what you did. 😉
Yea, I know it’s likely never going to happen (much like MM for my SM-T810 and SM-T710)…but a guy can dream!
“Not slippery?”
Nah, I don’t buy it. That phone is slippery as heck.
Gotta agree, the s6, s6 edge, note 5 and now s7 are the only phones that I have literally dropped on my face while using them in bed reading etc.
Nothing like a 5.3 ounce brick hitting you in the face.
I have Supcase Running case for my S6 which is VERY grippy. The only thing I hate more than ugly phone cases is the need for them. S7 active?
I bought a bunch of the spigen cases from amazon when they were selling most of theirs for $5…figured what the heck, $20, take my pick and may help resale to have a variety of them.
But, ended up settling on the Diztronic Voyeur; clear hard plastic back. Only issue is getting the inside of the case and back of the phone clean before putting it on (I still take it out regularly; hate cases)…Just a pure Bltch to get this thing spotless!
…things not to admit IRL
Don’t care
omg my wife has the edge and she is getting out of this world battery life!!! i have no idea what u got going on but my first test she got 72 hours off charger with 5 hours of screen time and no powersaving mode or wifi enabled! My note 5 gets destroyed 2 times over by this beast
Next time could you show this lag in a video? I might be having it but I can’t tell what it is!
Download Package Disabler Pro and disable the bloat you don’t need.
Decent review, however I have not experienced any lag spoken of above. TouchWiz is going to be on Samsung, so don’t expect to be a stock experience. Not everything about it is horrible, as in multi window, which I hear Google is trying to bake into their “stock” experience. Battery life has been good for me..WiFi at home Verizon lte on the go… gets through the day with no problem.
I really am not sure why you guys at Droid Life are getting crappo battery life on the Edge when many of us are doing pretty well. I use my phone just as much as you Tim, and even with location/bluetooth always on. I can still get 2 days if I ran it all the way down to zero.
Honestly, my Verizon S7 Edge is getting phenomenal battery life compared to the S6. I’m on it all the time. Took it on a trip all last week and only had to toss it on the charger at the end of the day. I wonder if there is something out there that keeps draining battery life that some people are running.
Same here. Verizon as well. I can’t think of why it would be a carrier issue other than the different carrier variants being a tad bit different.
So everyone on Verizon is getting good battery life and droid life review units on T-Mobile with no wifi are struggling…
Constantly searching for signal will drain that battery.
Ha good point
Of course no one will ever admit it because it’s cool to love T-Mobile and hate evil Verizon.
My screen cracked first day. Had it in a felt bag and it fell 2 feet. My case came the next day. I never dropped a phone before. I’m mad.
An who foult is that samsung. Next time order a case before you get your phone like I did
Did I say it was Samsung’s fault? I obviously dropped it. Just saying it’s pretty fragile and didn’t expect that little of a fall to break gorilla glass 4 or 5 or whatever it is. It sucks for me. Thanks for the advise though.
Hm, if you’re within 30 days, you can probably still pick up a Squaretrade plan for it. Then you’d be responsible for the cost of the plan + the deductible, which may end up being cheaper than taking it somewhere that may not even have the parts on hand to replace the display. Definitely cheaper if this ends up happening twice. Personally, I go with a thin case that I won’t drop and have the protection plan as a backup. That said, haven’t dropped a phone hard enough to damage the display…yet.
My mouth started watering looking at the pic of that sandwich! Looks delicious.
I download the Samsung Smartcam app on all of my devices and for some reason on my 6P that app would drain insane amounts of battery. But on all of the recent Samsung devices I’ve used there doesn’t seem to be an issue. Not sure why this is but just something I had noticed.
If you don’t have a bank that uses Samsung Pay, then get a chase credit card.
Or Samsung could do what Android Pay does. It links a virtual CC to your non-listed card. I really wonder why Samsung chose to not do this. I doubt they would ever allow my credit union, but I’m not going to get a chase card because CU rates are typically less than “for profit banks”.
Samsung Pay creates a virtual card to pair with your actual card. When I go into the app it shows me the last 4 of the digital card right next to the card it is mimicking (or whatever it’s actually doing).
You missed the “non-listed card” of my comment. Android Pay does it (my CU isn’t on the AP list and it works great!).
So why has Samsung failed here?
I dont think Android Pay even does that anymore for new cards.
They do, I’m a working example.
What a nonsense. The Galaxy S7 is way better than the S6. Of course, the S7 is better than the S6 in lots of ways. They try to hide the truth. misleading people.

Less than 2 hours SOT? Something must be wrong there. That’s way below average for any phone really.
He was talking about the S6 Edge with the less than 2 hours. He saw over 3 hours of SOT with the S7 Edge.
In the two weeks I’ve had the S7 Edge, I’ve averaged around 4 to 4 1/2 hours of SOT.

I’m guessing you live in an area with poor-quality cell reception?
In my time with the phone, on a normal day I can get through easily with 3+ hours SOT, and still have over 30% battery remaining by 11pm. BUT – there’s a big catch here … my employer has multiple buildings; if I need to use a desk in the building that has bad cell reception, my battery life plummets. A max of 2hrs SOT with 15% remaining at the end of the day (or less) then becomes my results. It’s horrid what a poor cell signal can do to this phone’s battery life.
When I first moved into my current home, reception was so bad I went and picked up one of those 4G towers that T-Mo provides. Now I’m rocking full LTE bars throughout the home, so I’m hoping it’s not reception that’s causing a problem.
I think it just “fashionable” to hate on Touchwiz. Haters are doing it because they can’t find any flaw in the S7. Touchwiz is probably the best ROM for Android. Samsung’s Touchwiz based on the 6 version of Android offers more customization options than stock Android. Touchwiz is superior, I like Touchwiz because it’s well designed and functional! The stock Android has lacked functionality
What functionality stock Android is lacking?
Come on. Stock Android is basic on purpose. Google wants OEMs to create some level of distinction for themselves so they purposefully keep vanilla fairly basic. Personally, I like Samsung’s current iteration more than Google’s plain one. It’s a personal preference matter and I’m sick of the odd elitist view of plain Android is better than everything. Some people like chocolate chip ice cream and some like vanilla. Buy the flavor you like.
Did you even understood my question?
He understood your question, but probably doesn’t feel the need to go compile a list of features from Samsung/HTC/LG/etc websites. Especially when you already know the answer to the question, and you’re likely trolling a bit.
* Multi screen app window.
* Easy access to shortcut settings (TouchWiz had this first before anyone) with pull down menu.
* Double Tap for camera launch
just to name a few right off the top of my head.
* Add the Samsung Music Player and Video Player (both best in Android all around)
* Private mode
* Smart Manager
* Easy Mode (launcher)
* Smart Stay
* Popup view (basically PIP)
Stock Android has those things except multi window. Which is coming.
As somebody who has switched between a lot of different phones, I beg to differ. TouchWiz is certainly better than it has been, but the random performance hiccups are all too commonplace to call it well designed and functional. There is no reason a phone with 4gb of ram and a modern processor should stutter or lag doing simple things. Also, the settings menu is not well done, and at least on my note, the search in settings took an embarrassingly long time.
Stock Android sucks.
What sucks about it? Its fast, buttery smooth, polished, and material design is very nice looking. What’s the problem?
Recent threads show it is not buttery smooth all the time. I certainly do not consider a daily reboot to keep it running normally “polished and buttery smooth”
You’re truly delusional lol. Stock android is proven stable and the fastest android experience available. Android N is out and is not 100% yet of course because its in beta but MM stock android is as rock solid as it gets.
Search this very site for “Nexus jank”. Read the comments and weep…..lol
Oh please, yes the nexus 5x was unfortunately riddled with odd performance issues. Still runs circles around galaxy s phones. But main nexus devices, yeah no lag or jank. Good try.
Stock Android is terrible. It’s boring.
Yeah i’ve got like a dozen current android phones. TouchWiz is still bad. They spend way too much time and money on a software team to take solid software and turn it into TouchWiz. I hope it gets slammed continually until they sort out their software. I mean we’re 7 Galaxy iterations in and it’s STILL an issue. Are they ever going to figure this out?
I would have to beg to differ with your point of view. It was not long ago with the recent updates to the Nexus phones for “jank” that I read way more than one person talk about how they had to reboot their NEXUS phone once a day or it would slow to a crawl. So even the pure, skin free (whatever the hell that actually means these days) golden phone has these issues. Quit bagging on Samsung when the opposite side of the spectrum is no better.
i understand why you’re saying this, but as the review pointed out, it’s beyond fashion. when you need to throw gobs of processing power and ram at a problem to make it perform like stock android, something is very wrong
TouchWiz has improved over the years, At this point, there’s no reason to hate touchwiz. I like what Samsung is doing with TouchWizz RECENTLY. As in Galaxy S7 TouchWizz.
They managed to bog down a Snapdragon 820 with TouchWiz. Something’s VERY wrong with that.
This is absolutely the case. If you need the raw HP of the latest/greatest CPU AND 4GB RAM AND your product still performs like crap, then there’s something wrong with your product. It’s that simple. TouchWiz is the only thing holding me back from a Samsung smartphone. I understand the launcher theory, but the launcher doesn’t replace all aspects of TW… you still have to put up with the terrible notifications and Setting menu, right?
Unfortunately, for us purists, TW isn’t going anywhere. Samsung sells a lot of phones and while they will continue to refine it, it will never completely go away.
Opinions stated as facts are always fun. Please continue.
TouchWiz is terrible. Quit being butt hurt because people do not like it. Even HTC sense is better than it. The only one that is worse than TouchWiz is LGs UI
People don’t like it? Sells say otherwise
Those people don’t care about software most people don’t. They buys brand and what make them feel better in public. Samsung ads are now everywhere I never seen LG or HTC or even Motorola and not even Nexus. I do see occasionally Huawei ads
Sorry, gotta disagree. Touchwiz is an abomination in Android; not as bad as Amazon crap devices, but still, pretty bad. I’ve had the s7 since it’s early pre-order arrival on T-mobile (using Cricket though) and it’s noticeably lagggier than the S6 was when I first got that and definitely more laggy than the note 5 when I had that, though never on MM.
It’s not deal breaker laggy, but certainly not lag free for sure. Also been noticing a TON of miss-touches with the capacitive buttons, but that’s probably just me fat fingering.
Even stock Android lags so stop it already.
Depends on device.
With an sd820, 4gb’s of RAM and the stupid fast storage memory there is no reason, other than touchwiz, for this thing to lag.
And, don’t get me wrong, I love the phone, awesome device, best by Samsung ever for sure, but if would be an absurd beast if it were stock Android.
Admittedly, I am a big fan of stock Android and hate skins, but that isn’t what drives my purchases. I put just as much weight on wireless charging and camera.
All depends on the devise. The nexus 6 and 6p are buttery smooth all the time. The 5x not so much but that is more due to hardware issues rather than software. We get it you like touchwiz, nothing wrong with that, but the chief complaint will always be that while the added features are great they design team behind it just didn’t do a good job. Samsung constantly has to use raw horsepower just to keep the dang things from lagging all the time and even then they still require more effort than any other device to keep it smooth.
I don’t know man, I admittedly only had my 6p for about 10 days (before selling it as it was too big for my liking) but I still noticed some jank, probably about as much as I’m seeing on me S7 Edge. Heck, even the might iOS still has the odd hiccup; I know ’cause I ran on a iPhone 6S between the 6p and the Edge. I will admit that iOS overall was smoother than any incarnation of Android I’ve used, but it wasn’t perfect either. This is still relatively new tech, after all. But anyhow, my rambling point was to agree with MicroNix that there’s some lag seemingly inherent in Android, period.
Works fine on cricket? No need to unlock?
I have contacts in the office of the president of T-Mobile. They approved it day one when I got it weeks ago, but the unlock didn’t successfully work for two weeks. They couldn’t figure it out and thought it was a defective phone and replaced it. But, wasn’t the phone, it was their unlock app/server.
Miserable.two weeks using T-Mobile’s network. But, finally worked.
Nah I have a Sammy & it kinda sucks
Nexus fanboys hate on TouchWiz because they have nothing else to complain about. The S7 edge blows the 6P out of the water, in both hardware and software.
The BlackBerry Priv blows the S7 not in internals, but what it can offer with it’s physical + virtual keyboards, the BlackBerry Hub, DTEK, and the security enhancements under the hood.
ROFL. Did I just see those words put together like that?
ROFL ROFL ROFL.
Yes, you did, and truer words have never been spoken. BlackBerry is leaps ahead of Samsung, and this is their first stab at Android. What does that say about Samsung’s ability as a hardware/software vendor? Not good things, my friend, not good things.
BlackBerry is on life support at this point. They are nowhere near Samsung in terms of hardware and software. The Priv was the worst phone I used in 2015 and I used all of the flagships. The camera sucks. The physical keyboard was pointless. I was using the on-screen keyboard. Both the front and rear cameras were atrocious. The only thing BlackBerry has going for itself at this point is the security updates.
The 18mpxl camera kicks the Samsung’s 12mpxl’s butt easily, and yes, I blow up photos to larger than 8×10, and it does matter.
The physical keyboard is leaps and bounds ahead of ANY virtual keyboard. But you as a 14 year old girl wouldn’t know that. lol
The security updates ARE miles ahead of Samsung’s, and their software doesn’t encumber the most powerful Snapdragon CPU made in the SD820. That’s pathetic. Samsung should be ashamed of themselves, as should you, as an end user. It’s embarrassing that Samsung thinks that TouchWiz is anywhere NEAR good enough. It’s appalling that Samsung thinks that lagginess on a Snapdragon 800 series is acceptable, but that’s what you sign up for when you buy Samsung. Add in the bloat that Samsung thinks “adds value” when really, their software just gets shoved into a folder or left to rot in the app drawer. BlackBerry did us right, with a vanilla-esque ROM that has security enhancements, that has the BlackBerry Hub, and has a physical keyboard that kills ANY virtual keyboard ever, especially when someone gets used to using one (unless you’re a 14 year old girl, of course, where you’d rather swype or tap on a screen with no feedback or click.)
You’re slamming on Samsung for using a Snapdragon 800-series processor in the S7/S7 edge while you are using a phone with Snapdragon 808?
ROFL.
Now I definitely won’t be taking your posts seriously.
BTW, don’t talk down to me like I don’t know anything. I had the Priv for almost two weeks last year and it was the worst phone of 2015. I know how the camera works. It was nothing but crap. And the PKB was worthless. I get feedback when I type on my screen. You know the phone vibrates when you press a key, right? Oh. Of course you do. You’re just trying to justify spending money on a piece of crap.
Okay, you 14 year old girl. Have “fun” using the worst phone of 2016. Lol I’ll use a real phone.
“the worst phone of 2016”??? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
Many websites have been saying the S7/S7 edge will be the best phone of 2016. You’re even more ignorant than I realized.
It gets beaten by every single other mid-range and flagship device out there. The OnePlus X is a better phone. That’s sad.
YOU KEEP GOING!
ROFLROFLROFLROFL
Like how idiotic you look? Lol
I’m not the one calling the S7/S7 edge the worst phones of 2016. That’s just stupid to type something like that.
Nope, it’s true. TouchWiz singlehandedly makes the most powerful snapdragon perform like an SD400 series chip. Now that’s a feat!
…coming from someone who hasn’t touched TouchWiz in the last couple of years. Droid Life, Android Authority, and Android Central have all rated Samsung phones the best phones of 2015 and the S7/S7 edge as the top phone to buy right now.
Maybe the editors from those websites don’t know anything. /s
ROFL.
You mean the Galaxy Tab 3 and the Galaxy Note 8.0 (until I installed CyanogenMod) don’t count? You’re an idiot. Droid life, Android Authority, and Android Central are all bought and paid for by Samsung.
I’m not going to use a fisher price phone, and I’m also not going to use a device that’s built to encumber the most powerful Snapdragon CPU to date, because that’s what Samsung does best. Encumber the best CPU at their disposal.
“Droid life, Android Authority, and Android Central are all bought and paid for by Samsung.”
I’m done here. You have no credibility. You lose.
Like the credibility you never had by being an idiot Samsung user? Lol
lol, guess who’s behind samsung Knox?
Point? If you don’t use Knox, you don’t get the benefits from BlackBerry. Not like if you use a real BlackBerry.
Point is, if you need it, you have it. If you don’t then your device is still encrypt by default.
You’re just defaulting back to every single idiot reasons to use a Samsung crap phone out there.
Cause your reasons to praise the priv aren’t stupid? Com’on if the priv fits your needs it’s a good thing, a few people seems to agree with you, since BBY is falling .Some people may want a more powerfull phone (CPU&GPU), with better photo capability, FP sensor, edge features, ip68, VR experience… These people don’t want a priv, could you respect that?..
The 808 is more than powerful enough, I have a better camera sensor, and I have no respect for Samsung.
So? Cause the sd808 is enough for you and cause you think priv’s camera is better, nobody should buy an S7 edge? You’re 12 or something ?
No, I’m actually using a real phone, not a toy. Youre the 9 year old who’s more interested in playing games than productivity or ease of use.
Ho, you can’t type properly on a virtual keyboard… So bad for you, the rest of the world have no problem with that and the only company still using hardware keyboard is just bankrupting. Anyway if I want a hard keyboard, there’s one available for the S7. I’m actually more productive by using edge’s shortcup, edge’s app, split screen and floating app, I’m also able to mirror my phone on my tab and computer.
So much for productivity.
More stupidity. Lol
Along with TouchWiz Samsung lacks…
1.Timely Android updates.
2.Multimedia experience.
3.Ability to beta test Android versions.
4.Memory management
and yes, it cost around $200 more when compared to 6P
I literally don’t care about 2-4 because I don’t have the problem with 4. and who cares if you get to beta test Android versions? That’s not a selling point of a phone. Ever.
That’s your opinion I guess. By the way, besides TouchWiz and speakers, S7 is the best phone available till now. I am not a galaxy fan or nexus fan, but everyone has problem with TouchWiz and speakers, even Samsung owners.
It also bogs down the most powerful mobile SOC on the market!
“I think it just “fashionable” to hate on Touchwiz”, I agree with you. What is more fashionable, “I prefer stock android” (hate that sentence from each & every reviewers!).
It’s not “fashionable”, it’s preference. And if you prefer TW, that’s fine, so why does that mean I can’t prefer stock Android? Sorry, don’t quite understand your comment.
I understand & respect your view. I’m an AOSP fan too but that doesn’t mean I have to dislike everything else. Stock android is very barebone, unless you use any custom ROM its very boring. TW in devices like Note or S series is very useful and getting much much better. It is a trend for reviewers of phone to hate everything else other than stock android, just like almost every car reviewers show their hatracy on CVT transmission, although it very very good for normal people.
If you are comparing best ROM for Android with stock Android then CynogenMod and Croma are the best available custom ROMs with a lots of customization and clean as sock Android. In s7, TouchWiz isn’t as bad as it was in note 4 but, it is highly bloated and slow. You can read many articles on ‘what is not good in s7/edge’ and you always found people complaining about TouchWiz.
——-“Easy to hold, not slippery, umm, it feels like a premium product, it doesn’t feel cheap. And a good-size…… for just one hand.”
Sure she is talking about the phone in that excerpt : P /jk
Three words – Touchwiz still sucks
Then don’t buy it. I like this iteration of Touchwiz. Samsung has made it look good and it’s fast. Everyone has a preference for some look and feel. I personally don’t like stock/plain/vanilla Android’s experience. It’s too basic for me. I don’t go around screaming “it sucks”. Each to their own.
Enjoy your laggy phone, I haven’t reviewed my N6 for 2 months now and it flies with 20 chrome tabs open, try that with your Touchwiz, I bet it’ll crawl..
Read – I haven’t rebooted.. Not reviewed
That’s because TouchWiz DOES suck. What’s there to even like about TouchWiz? It bogs down every CPU that it’s put onto. Even a super-powerful SD820, it bogs down and destroys any chance it has at having good battery life and/or good performance. The first thing I did when I got a Galaxy Note 8.0 was install CyanogenMod on it because that’s how horrible TouchWiz is. It needs to go die, like Samsung does, because until they adopt a more vanilla Android system, they need to leave the ecosystem. Samsung is a terrible software vendor, and they should stick to hardware, and leave developing software to the professionals, like Google themselves, and BlackBerry.
Wow. Guess you feel strongly about TouchWiz. Did it hurt you as a child or burn down your house? I disagree with your opinion. I think TouchWiz has made great strides away from a horrible CPU sucking UEX layer and is becoming a pretty good front end for an Android experience. I would like to say I respect your opinion, but honestly, it sounds more like ill informed propaganda and I’m sick of that with the election going on.
Samsung is another crappy vendor that shouldn’t have their little idiotic hands on software development. Every version of TouchWiz I’ve used has caused horrible slowdowns and hiccups that should just not happen in Android. Given that it causes the newfangled Galaxy S7 to have hiccups and slowdowns they’ve made no strides, they’ve just jammed higher end components into the same shell and sold us a bill of goods claiming that TouchWiz is getting better. You fell for it. That’s shameful given that it’s obvious that TouchWiz hasn’t gotten any better. The new CPU just made it seem that way, and if you had used a vanilla Android or at least a less heavily skinned version, you’d see just what that SD820 is truly capable of. Not encumbered by literally the worst software developed made for mobile.
Based on the fact that I have at least 2 models of every manufacturers’ phones on my desk for dev and testing, it’s safe to say I’ve used nearly every UEX skin out there. Google’s interface is blah without a lot of extra functionality. There’s really no other good way to put it. Motorola actually did a great job of keeping close to stock, but wrapping additional useful functionality behind the scenes. TouchWiz has matured over the years going from a crayon explosion to a useful and balanced UEX. I would advise you to not buy an S7 and save yourself the pain of having to put a different ROM on it to make yourself happy.
Don’t make me laugh. CyanogenMod has done better pooping out ROMs than Samsung ever has. Add in the fact that BlackBerry did better on their first stab at Android than Samsung ever has too, it’s pathetic. Samsung should be good at this by now. They’re not. The only thing they’re good at is encumbering the latest Snapdragon processor.
I went to the store to check this out. There just is no snappiness to it. Not sure if it’s the animations or touchwiz or just samsung in general.Just flipping screens and bring up the app screen, just sluggish. I’m sure it’s fast with apps, but the screens just feel slow
Then i went to the LG v10 and it feels like a speed demon. Everything just snaps.
Blame suckwiz
You can unlock Developer Options (in About Phone, press Build Number like 8 times) and then turn Animation scales down to 0.5x or 0x and the animations will speed up imensely. One of the first things I do on any Android smart phone.
Also, installing Nova Launcher and under “Look and feel” changing to speed to “Faster than light” will make the phone blazing fast.
agree 100%. I traded my V10 for the S7 and felt like I went backwards. The S7 was definitely slower doing every day tasks. after 2 days I took it back and got another V10. Now I’m happy again. There’s just something not right with the S7. It should be a speed demon.
Wow, your coverage must suck or you have some apps draining the battery. I am on TMO as well, but get much better battery life. Just yesterday, up at 10am, bed at midnight with 48% battery left and almost 3hrs SoT. That has been pretty much consistent over the last week that I’ve had the phone.
Wish I could determine which app it is, but really, I didn’t use any app out of the ordinary. Most people might point to FB or Messenger, but I really use those sparingly. If anything, Instagram and Twitter are my two top used apps, but according to GSam, it’s not them causing a problem.
Those apps still suck battery even if not used. A friend of mine had uninstalled FB, left Messenger, and it still hogged the battery.
I tried that on the Nexus 6P, uninstalling FB, but didn’t really change anything. And plus, I sorta need access to FB for work, so I guess not-so-awesome battery life is just my life from now on.
Did you check GPS settings? Sometimes Tinder enables my High Accuracy GPS and it drains my battery. (Trying to find a solution here to your battery problem). Let me snap a screenshot of my battery usage. Maybe it can help compare.
Damn you, Tinder! Mine is on WiFi and Mobile Network, only switching to GPS for when I’m driving and need it.
Here’s my battery usage so far.
Yea that’s not that good… I mean this isn’t one of my better battery days because of recording videos and what not outside today, but this is 2 hours 35 minutes of SOT and 45 minutes of phone calls… And I’m at 55% battery almost 15 hours later.
This is a Verizon S7 Edge.
I’m sure you have had your phone for a while, but my Verizon version’s battery life has gotten much better over the first week. I leave LTE on all the time, sync 3 email accounts (1 work) and high accuracy for GPS/Location. I also randomly have bluetooth on for smartwatch sync. Off the charger at 12:30 last night at 100%, woke up at 7:00 .am. at 97%, and I am currently at 16 hours on battery with 75% left, minimal usage. My screen is set to 50% brightness.
Honestly, GSam has not been that reliable for me in the past. Unfortunately, I have not found a better alternative yet. But this phone has the best battery thus far for me. As far as battery is concerned, I have been extremely pleased.
Well that makes me happy to hear, because I recently convinced a friend to buy this phone lol
Haha, it is a good phone overall. How is your coverage where you live? That could be killing it. Because this is the first phone where I keep everything on: location, Bluetooth, nfc, etc. I don’t turn anything off to save battery and it is doing really great for me.
Turn off the apps when not in use, it’ll save the battery. Every morning I turn off all my go to apps and all Google apps, and listen to Blutooth music/ podcast for 2 hours and only use <10% of my battery on the N6. Not using a weather app saved me 10% of battery every day now, and I just use Google Now for my weather info.
Battery has been really good for me. Right now I’m a little over 3 hours of SoT and I still have 33% of battery. This has been playing music all day, using social apps, etc.
I’ve been seeing similar numbers on my Verizon S7 Edge in the two weeks since I received the phone. I’m not really doing anything to try to conserve the battery either, so I’m surprised when I see people with numbers like Tim’s or worse. Gotta be signal strength or a rogue app.
Agreed, @Tim how much of the time was the phone in standby? With doze when my G3 is in standby the battery graph is horizontal where in your screen shots it going down at a 45 degree angle nearly the whole time!
There is definitely something going on with the battery IMO.. check out this 40 page thread.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/help/how-experiencing-android-battery-drain-t3327730/page40
3600mah should easily get you a day and a half of usage.
I read that and have also experienced improvement in the week after getting the phone that many users including kellen described. I went from 3hr SOT to 4.5-5. Could be disabling bloatware and superfluous ‘advanced features’ helped.
keep tweaking things, i have no problem getting 6+ hours of SOT
Girlfriend Test: “Easy to hold, not slippery, umm, it feels like a premium product, it doesn’t feel cheap. And a good-sized display. You can reach all necessary sections of the screen with just one hand.”
Best part of the review.
By the way, Tim, wanna trade colors? Silver one was sold out where I got mine 🙁
I don’t think Tim is stupid.
Should have read it before she made me edit it lol
should be added to every DL review
This review is a joke.
Then leave.
I had to double read that part of the review. I thought the Girlfriend test meant that it would have good security so the girlfriend can’t get in and read what you’ve been up to. lol
That would be the “Side Piece Test” ?
